The picturesque region of Willunga holds a proud and significant place in Australia's almond industry. It was here, in the early 20th century, that Samuel Strout planted the seeds of what would flourish into the largest almond orchard in the southern hemisphere.
As almond blossoms begin to grace the landscape, the vibrant community of Willunga eagerly prepares for the annual Willunga Almond Blossom Festival, set to take place on the 27th and 28th of July.
Historically, Willunga was renowned for its impressive 2,000 acres of almond trees, drawing visitors from near and far to witness the stunning blooms that painted the countryside in delicate shades of pink and white. As the almond industry thrived, the community seized the moment to establish the Willunga Almond Blossom Festival in 1969, initially as a fundraiser for the construction of the town’s festival hall. This iconic event has since grown, celebrating not only the region's rich history but also supporting the diverse range of clubs and organizations based at the Willunga Recreation Park.
This year’s festival promises new and exciting attractions. A highlight will be the Inferno Fire Performers, making their dazzling debut on Saturday night with a dramatic fire twirling and fire breathing act ahead of the grand fireworks display. “Inferno thrilled crowds at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival in February and are arguably Australia’s hottest fire show,” says Sally Scantlebury, Festival Manager. “They will bring a theatrical new dimension to our winter festival, now in its 53rd year.”
Willunga’s historic Show Hall will also come alive with music, featuring a weekend program packed with local artists and bands. New to the lineup is a showcase of young, emerging talent managed by Year 12 students from the Willunga Waldorf School. One of the festival’s beloved traditions is the Almond Blossom Festival Cake Competition, where bakers can put their skills to the test. The cakes will be judged by a panel that includes the Country Women’s Association, local chefs, and special guests, with prizes up for grabs for all ages.
Children's activities abound throughout the weekend, centered around a new giant tipi. Expect science shows, story time, a petting zoo, camel and pony rides, mini golf, and a giant game.
The Willunga Almond Blossom Festival unites families and visitors for a weekend of festivities, offering a diverse array of attractions and activities. From thrilling show rides and live music to kids' crafts and games, a vintage car display, market stalls, mouth-watering food and drinks, fireworks, and almond-inspired activities, there’s something for everyone.
This cherished festival is a testament to Willunga’s community spirit, commitment to tradition, and support for local businesses. Join us on the 27th and 28th of July at Willunga Recreation Park for two days of inclusive family fun and revel in the region’s largest community event.
Mark your calendars and come be part of the celebration!
