The picturesque region of Willunga holds a significant place in Australia's almond industry history. It was here, in the early 20th century, that Samuel Strout planted the first seeds of what would become the largest almond orchard in the southern hemisphere.

Today, as almond blossoms begin to grace the landscape, the vibrant community of Willunga eagerly prepares for the annual Willunga Almond Blossom Festival on 29 and 30 July.

In its early days, Willunga boasted an impressive 2,000 acres of almonds, captivating visitors who flocked to witness the breathtaking almond blossoms that painted the countryside in shades of pink and white.

As the industry flourished, the community seized the opportunity and established the Willunga Almond Blossom Festival in 1969 to raise funds for the construction of the town’s festival hall.

This iconic event not only celebrates the region's rich history but continues to support the diverse range of clubs and organisations that call Willunga Recreation Park their home.

"This year's Almond Blossom Festival will be the 53rd time the event has been held and is a true celebration of our region's heritage and community spirit,” says Graham Ormsby, Willunga Recreation Park Vice President. “It's a fabulous family event and a great way for the region to come together."

Willunga Recreation Park serves as the hub for numerous sporting, cultural, community, and social clubs and organisations. The Willunga Almond Blossom Festival plays a vital role in providing financial support for the ongoing maintenance and improvement of the park.

“Almost every local sporting club and community group utilises the Willunga Recreation Park,” Mr Ormsby says.

“From the local primary school, Willunga Football and Netball Club’s to Cinemalunga, Girl Guides, Country Fire Service (CFS), and the RSL. They all rely on the park's facilities, so it’s a very important part of our community.”

While Willunga has since earned global recognition as a premier wine-growing region, the almond blossoms continue to thrive, serving as a beautiful reminder of the area's heritage and its enduring connection to the land.

The Willunga Almond Blossom Festival brings together families and visitors from near and far to revel in a weekend of festivities, offering a wide array of attractions and activities.

From thrilling show rides and live music to kids crafts and games, market stalls, mouth- watering food and drinks, to fireworks display and almond-inspired activities, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

The festival is a testament to the community's unwavering commitment to preserving their traditions, supporting local businesses, and fostering a strong sense of camaraderie.

“By attending the Willunga Almond Blossom Festival, you not only get a fabulous and fun day out, but you also contribute to the sustainability of our local community,” event organiser Heather Williams says.

“Every dollar raised from the festival goes back into supporting the clubs and organisations that make Willunga Recreation Park thrive.”

Don't miss your chance to be part of this fun community event. Mark the calendar for 29 and 30 July and join us at Willunga Recreation Park for two days of family fun.
