Willunga has pulled off an upset for the ages by defeating the seemingly unbeatable Victor Harbor by seven goals in the Great Southern Netball Association (GSNA) League grand final on Saturday. Victor were gunning for a fifth consecutive title while Willunga were hoping to overturn the 2019 result, when Victor Harbor prevailed by six goals, and win their first GSNA League title. The reigning premier were overwhelming favourites as they had won the clashes between these two teams in 2020 by a whopping 46 and 47 goals!
Strange things can happen in finals and so it transpired on Saturday as after a tight opening quarter saw Willunga lead by a goal, Victor hit back to lead by five goals at halftime. The game took a decisive turn in the final quarter when Victor Harbor’s Sarah Chigwidden was sent off leaving them with six players and later Taylor McKinnon was also sent from the court to leave Victor with just five players as Willunga surged to a 68-61 victory. Willunga Goal Attack Nicole Lander topped off a great day to be adjudged best on court.
Victor Harbor had some joy earlier in the day when they took out the Senior 2 title with a 48-44 win over Langhorne Creek.
