Women in business overcome COVID challengesKellie Wallace, Mary-Ann Bennett and Jo Puplett at the WIB McLaren Vale/Southern Suburbs event.

The challenges of COVID-19, including a positive result for the scheduled speaker, weren’t enough to stop the Women in Business Regional Network resuming face-to-face events for its McLaren Vale/Southern Suburbs chapter.

Proving the resilience of small business owners and their recent pivoting experiences, a new speaker was found and the first in-person dinner in four months was held at Mick O’Sheas Irish Pub in Hackham.

Helen Sampson of Jagged Crow Creative, along with several booked attendees, tested positive, so network founder Carolyn Jeffrey stepped in. Helen’s presentation on blogging is expected to be rescheduled for later in the year.

The dinner attracted several new faces, including some women from metropolitan Adelaide, the Hills and the Fleurieu.

Carolyn called on her 30 years’ experience in the media in newspapers, radio and public relations, as well as online publications, to give the women an action plan to be noticed by media outlets for all the right reasons.

Those in attendance were encouraged to start by writing a Media Briefing document about their business ,to provide a chance to reflect on their business point of difference and to be able to speak passionately and authentically about their brand.

What constituted news was also discussed and a list of ideas on possible newsworthy topics was provided.

The next McLaren Vale/Southern Suburbs event will be a lunch at the Smiling Samoyed Brewery in Myponga on Wednesday18 May, when bookkeepers

Kelly White and Trish Newell will give tips on taking the stress out of preparing end of financial year accounts.

The Women in Business Regional Network is open to business owners, managers, staff and those dreaming of owning their own business. You don’t have to be a member to attend events, but bookings are essential via Eventbrite.
