Work starts on Flat to Vale Trail

Construction of the City of Onkaparinga’s Flat to Vale Trail cycling and walking track is set to start in October.

The shared-use path will connect the townships of McLaren Flat and McLaren Vale.

Mayo MP Rebekha Sharkie has welcomed the next step in the long road to building the trail.

"Last year I successfully advocated for $1.5M in federal funds for this project after working with the very enthusiastic Flat to Vale Trail Community Group," she says.

"It’s a great project that will improve safety and enrich the lives of locals and visitors to this beautiful part of Mayo."

Two potential routes for the trail were presented to the community for feedback in October and November last year.

The council chose a 3.6-kilometre trail for the northern side of Pedler Creek, which was supported by 92.4 per cent of the residents who gave feedback.

The route crosses eight individual parcels of land, requiring the council to negotiate land access arrangements with the private landowners, before commissioning a detailed design.

The City of Onkaparinga estimates the trail will be completed by June 2022.
