Work starts on Majors Road Interchange

Early work and site investigations to construct the Majors Road Interchange Project will begin next week, on Wednesday 1 March.

The federal and state governments are jointly funding (50:50) the $120 million construction of new on/off ramps for the Southern Expressway at Majors Road.

The project will provide commuters in the southern suburbs with greater access to the Southern Expressway and nearby facilities.

Local South Australian Aboriginal business RAW SA has been engaged to construct project site facilities adjacent to the Riding for the Disabled Association SA site.

It will also continue site investigation works to help better understand the underground services and inform the project's detailed design.

Construction of site facilities is set to start in the following weeks. All the works are expected to be completed by late April, weather permitting.

Some speed and lane restrictions may be required To safely facilitate these works.

Drivers are asked to take extra care when workers are on site and observe speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.

Procurement for the interchange’s design and construction contract is expected to be completed in mid-2023, with major work expected to start in late 2023 and project completion by the end of 2025.

The proposed concept design, released in late 2022, has been developed to ensure minimal impact to the Glenthorne National Park – Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, with no portion of the National Park to be further isolated from any other area of the park.

The current design also ensures no impact to significant vegetation, Glenthorne Farm or the O’Halloran Hill Recreational Park.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King says she is happy to see delivery of infrastructure South Australians need and deserve.

“This project will deliver lasting road infrastructure improvements while providing a critical local jobs boon, with approximately 245 full-time-equivalent jobs to be supported each year over the construction period.”
