World Elder Abuse Awareness Day event

The United Nations has declared June 15 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, providing an opportunity for communities to stand together against the abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people.

City of Onkaparinga’s social connections team has organised a free event on Friday 14 June to raise awareness locally.

It will be held at the Arts Centre in Port Noarlunga and will include a light lunch and entertainment.

The Band of the South Australia Police will play; there will be a guest speaker from the Office for Ageing Well; and a dance display.

Elder abuse can be financial, emotional, psychological, physical, sexual, or social.

It is most often inflicted by someone known to the older person, usually an adult child or other family members or friend.

The awareness event is supported by the federal Department of Health and Aged Care.

It will run from 10am to 12.30pm; bookings are essential on 8301 7232.
