Yankalilla a Healthy Town winner

The Yankalilla Green Gym has won the second round of the SA Healthy Towns Challenge, which recognises the project as having the most improvement for community healthy living.

Yankalilla Green Gym was created in partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia, Normanville Natural Resource Centre, and The District Council of Yankalilla.

The main goal of the program is to encourage older people in the community to be active and stay connected, which has been possible even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Volunteers helped contribute to the environmental conservation of their local area, and at the same time increased their physical activity and social connections,” says Lyn Dean, Wellbeing SA Chief Executive.

In 2019, Green Gym was awarded the round two grant, which allowed the program to double its volunteer numbers and increase the number of working bees.

“The Green Gym has proved itself to be a thriving initiative and asset for the community that will improve health and wellbeing now and into the future.”

The program has grown approximately 40,000 seedlings, with thousands already planted throughout the local district
