Yankalilla library funding boost

Concept designs for a new library were presented in a report to the District Council of Yankalilla meeting on 20 October.

The new library will have improved mobility access, more engaging, multi-use spaces and will be fitted out with upgraded technology.

The recent federal budget allocated $250,000 towards the purpose-built library space.

Yankalilla Mayor Glen Rowlands says the funding was fantastic news for the district, crediting local MP Rebekha Sharkie’s effort in securing it.

"Rebekha and I have been talking about the major benefits an upgraded library would provide our community for a number of years and I thank her and Senator Stirling Griff for their continued advocacy to help make this happen," he says.

Yankalilla’s community library was formerly a shared service with the Yankalilla Area School. Since this arrangement stopped the library has operated out of The Centre community hub.

Rebekha Sharkie says the federal funding is exciting news for the Yankalilla community as council progresses towards the tender phase for the construction of the new library.

“Yankalilla is a small town on the Fleurieu coast but its size belies a strong, vibrant and inclusive community.”

She says the funding will ensure the library is able to ramp up its already successful programs and branch out into additional programs.

“Upgrades to technology will enable the library to further develop basic IT support services which will offer residents, young and old, the opportunity to learn new skills as they connect with the world in a safe and responsible manner.”

The area currently being used for the temporary library will be returned to a youth space.
