Matt Rogerson and South Lakes Golf Club

Returning to the south coast to take on the role as General Manager of South Lakes Golf Club, Matt shares a little about himself and the current status and future plans for the South Lakes Golf Club.

Having grown up in the region, it is like coming home for me to be able to contribute to the local economy whilst being involved in sport. A Port Elliot boy, my mother grew up just down the road in Goolwa and my father spent his formative years in Hindmarsh Tiers before settling in Port Elliot. I’m extremely proud and grateful that I am able to reside in the home he built and where I have so many fond memories.

I played Football and Cricket for Port Elliot and look forward to again having involvement with those sports as my wife Meg and I settle into South Coast life.

The premier region in SA, it has everything to offer with lifestyle and amenities and only a short drive from the CBD. Being a part of that again and looking after a great sporting club such as South Lakes which offers so much to the local community is extremely gratifying.

South Lakes Golf Club is situated in an idyllic location wedged between the Murray River and Goolwa Beach and is an 18 Hole Championship Course boasting couch fairways and greens that are the envy of many regional and city clubs.

Designed with the local demographic in mind, the course leans toward a ‘Links’ style layout with gentle slopes and well maintained rough areas.

Complemented with a well-appointed clubhouse boasting bar, Birdie Bistro and gaming, the club is also well served by legend professional Roger Stephens, who has competed around the world on tour, including such prestigious events as the British Open, and is rated one of the best teaching professionals in this state and indeed nationally. The Pro Shop is bursting with everything golf, and allied with professional advice, South Lakes provides for all golfers whatever your skill level.

South Lakes is extremely proud that nearly a third of our membership is female, which is far and away above the national average of around 20%. Our fields are now reaching 70 women on Wednesday and Saturday. Men and Women have taken advantage of the greater flexibility of playing times with the full introduction of gender neutral timesheets on all competition days.

A Great Regional Golf Club – Welcoming, Inclusive, Progressive”

As with most community organisations, the costs of providing facilities for member enjoyment whilst minimising the financial impact on said membership is an ongoing battle, but one which thankfully is assisted by many volunteers and a hard working committee. The COVID-19 restrictions have also added to the imposts placed upon our club.

The community spirit that is exhibited by those involved with the club goes a long way to reducing these impacts and ensuring that the club’s community spirit is maintained.

A true member based, community club, South Lakes is part of the fabric of the Goolwa Community and indeed the South Coast. The vibrant feel of people belonging to such a great organisation makes for great competition and social days!

The long term vision for the club is to be the best regional club in South Australia, providing member benefits and contributing to the Goolwa and wider South Coast communities and being a go to venue for community events and celebrations.

This goal is certainly achievable as the club continues to foster a true South Lakes family environment where members and visitors alike can come and enjoy golf, lunch, dinner and a few drinks in pleasant surroundings and great company.
