Under 60s to get Pfizer vaccine

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has announced the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is now recommended for all Australians aged under 60.

He says the decision is based on advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) that the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine should now only be recommended for those aged 60 or over.

Prior to this announcement, Australians aged 50 - 59 were being given the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The Health Minister said he "strongly recommended" that people in that age group who have already received their first dose without concern, still get their second one when it falls due.

He says that the decision was a cautious one and that he hoped it would tackle vaccine hesitancy in this age group.
