Labor is promising to build three overtaking lanes between Myponga and Cape Jervis, if they win the March 19 state election.
Leon Bignell, the Member for Mawson, says a Labor government would spend $6M building the lanes and another $100 000 for a study into traffic flow and marine management around the Cape Jervis boat ramp and ferry terminal.
Mr Bignell says the area has become dangerous for all road users and that recreational and commercial fishers are having to compete with tourists and trucks, all trying to squeeze into the same space.
“In Government, we will work with Yankalilla Council, local people, businesses and other users to come up with a plan to make it safer,” Mr Bignell said.
“As traffic has grown heavier on the road to Cape Jervis and with bigger ferries due to be operating to Kangaroo Island in 2024 we will see further increases in traffic volumes.”
“That’s why the overtaking lanes need to be built to reduce the risk of crashes and to keep people safe. “
“We will also be looking at what improvements need to be made on Kangaroo Island as part of the planned wharf upgrade and roads package.”
