The old Granite Island Causeway is set to be decommissioned in February and South Australians can register their interest now to receive some of the timber.

Once the decommissioning is completed the timber will be sorted and prioritised for re-use as follows:

-      Re-use in the project (the construction of the viewing platforms to be replaced at either end of the old causeway, seating, signage and art).

-      Stored for future use on Department of Infrastructure and Transport marine jetty structures.

-      Allocated to council for re-use on local community projects.

-      Made available to interested parties who have registered with the department.

People can register their interest by phoning the Department on 1300 049 048 or emailing

[email protected].

The new concrete causeway opened just before Christmas with the state government spending $43M on the project to replace the original causeway.

The old causeway partially collapsed in 2019 and aluminium props have been helping to shore the structure up since then.

The heritage listed causeway started life in 1862 as the Victoria Pier.  Swimming baths were constructed on either side. The baths were demolished in 1955 after being damaged by storms.

The causeway was extended to form a bridge to Granite Island in 1867.
