Western Districts has caused another big upset as they defeated Dudley United by two points, 8.7 (55) to 8.5 (53), to advance to the Kangaroo Island Football League (KIFL) Grand Final next Saturday (4/9) against minor premier Wisanger at Parndana. The Saints finished fifth (bottom) of the KIFL ladder at the end of the minor round but due to a change in the finals set up this season, they found themselves in the major round. They have had a fairytale run with wins over Kingscote, Parndana and now Dudley United. It was a major turnaround yesterday for Western Districts as in their two meetings with the Eagles in the minor round, they had lost by a combined 213 points! Josh Graham, Lucas Boyle and Lleyton Hedges all kicked two goals for the Saints, while Clayton Willson booted three goals for Dudley United. Graham, Cam Florance, Ty Boyle, Tim Larcombe and Henry Riggs were named best for the victorious Saints. The Breakers U13 girls scored another home win on Sunday against Noarlunga United despite losing players to injury and unavailability. With regular keeper Ella Keam busting an ankle, Lucy Boundey stepped into goals again. The game looking promising early with much of the play in the Breakers attacking half.  An early corner taken by Katye O’Donnell delivered a beautiful ball into the box but the forwards just couldn’t quite get to it in time. Up the other end, Boundey made a great save although the throw-out was a little miss-timed, hitting Zara Yates in the back on the way out. Nila Mohring had the crowd on their feet when she went one-on-one with the Noarlunga goalie and was just unlucky not to get the ball past and into the net. Back in the midfield Abby Ellis and Taylor Perry were running hard, chasing down and winning against their opponents. Towards the end of the half the girls started to get a little loose in defence. But then Hannah Rowlands thundered a goal kick up to Alana Anderson, who deftly turned her opponent inside out, getting the Breakers back into attack.  A handball delivered a penalty to the Breakers girls and O’Donnell didn’t skip a beat in shooting into the top left corner to score the first goal of the match. Only seconds later the whistle blew for halftime. The second half started with Modra, Rowlands, Lokke Rennerts and Bethany North working fantastically together in defence and the Noarlunga team started to show frustration towards one another.    Perry was still getting the best of her midfield opponent and up forward Anderson, Nuala Davis and Ellis were creating multiple chances. Finally, a well taken pass by Mohring saw O’Donnell toe-poke in the Breakers’ second. Coach O’Donnell then brought super-sub Polly Nelson on to bolster the team in the last few minutes of the game. Again, as has happened so often this year, a handball in the box resulted in another penalty, this time for Noarlunga. Boundey tried her best but the ball just stretch over her and the score went to 2-1. Only moments later the full time whistle sounded and the girls scored a well-deserved win that had some great effort and teamwork across the pitch. Next week the girls are at home again, with an 11am Fathers Day game against Salisbury.          

Great Southern Netball Association (GSNA) powerhouse Victor Harbor, are the first team through to the League Grand Final, to be held at Strathalbyn on September 11, following their 72-65 win over reigning premier Willunga in the 2020 Grand Final rematch. It was the 14th consecutive win for ‘Victor’. The Southern Football League Women’s (SFLW) finals series begins on Sunday with the four best teams in the competition set to battle it out for premiership glory. The second semi-final sees a Grand Final rematch from 2020 with Reynella taking on Flagstaff Hill. Reynella has been the pacesetter this season, winning all 12 games on their way to the minor premiership. The biggest threat to the Wine Flies winning their first SFLW flag will be reigning premier Flagstaff Hill, who lost just two games in 2021, both to Reynella. The last time they met was back on July 18 with Reynella winning a tight, low-scoring battle by seven points and I expect this Sunday’s game will be another tight affair.In the first semi-final, Cove will face off against Christies Beach with the loser saying goodbye to the 2021 season, while the winner will progress to the Preliminary Final. Cove has the finals pedigree, having won SFLW premierships in 2018 and 2019. Christies Beach were minor premiers last season but bowed out in ‘straight sets’ so they’ll be desperate to make amends. The Kangaroo Island Netball Association (KINA) finals series got underway on Saturday with Western Districts upsetting the unbeaten minor premier Parndana in the second semi-final at Wisanger. The 43-26 win for Western Districts sees them straight through to the Grand Final on September 4 at Parndana. In the first semi-final, Dudley United defeated Wisanger 49-39 at Penneshaw and booked a date with Parndana in the Preliminary Final on Saturday at Western Districts. 

Wisanger are through to the 2021 Kangaroo Island Football League (KIFL) Grand Final following their comprehensive 63-point win against Dudley United in the second semi-final at Wisanger on Saturday. These two teams were the standouts in the truncated minor round with one win each from their two meetings. The Panthers had the added bonus of playing the semi-final on their home deck and they made it count as they won 23.7 (145) to 12.10 (82). Luke Stewart was a star up forward for Wisanger as he kicked 10 goals in a best on ground performance. Nick Berry (4), Khyal Stead (3), Jackson Lockett (2) and Sam Clifford (2) were the other multiple goalkickers for the Panthers. Clayton Willson and Troyston Corbett each kicked three goals for the Eagles. Joining Stewart in the best players for Wisanger were Liam Sampson, Brok Viney-Obst, Berry and Jai Turner. Best players for Dudley United were Bradlee Ward, Hugo Sharkey, Sam McLeay, Kayne Wheaton and Clayton Willson.Western Districts stunned Parndana and made their way through to the Preliminary Final on Saturday after a tight 10-point win in the first semi-final at Penneshaw yesterday. Dylan Lockett (4), Joshua Graham (3) and Lloyd Coulson (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Western Districts, while Reece Johnston was a standout for Parndana with six goals and Jarrad Kelly chimed in with three goals. The Breakers U13 girls scraped a narrow 1-0 win at home against Metro United in a tense game played in beautiful sunny conditions on Sunday. The Breakers started with the advantage of the northerly breeze and had the ball in their attack in the early part of the play. Lucy Boundey delivered a nice ball down the wing early on and Kayte O’Donnell pitched in a great cross but the petite Metro goalie showed great skill in blocking the shot. O’Donnell and Nila Mohring worked well up forward but frustratingly the girls just couldn’t quite get through.   They got painfully close from a corner, with the ball just slicing past the wrong side of the post. Zara Yates and Abby Ellis were also working hard in the midfield, pushing the ball up forward. Lokke Rennerts showed her defensive best again, coming out best against two Metro forwards on her own. The second half saw Metro gain momentum, winning corners and giving goalie Ella Keam a bit more to do.  Alana Anderson showed some nice touches in delivering the ball back out of defence.  Hannah Rowlands was again the bedrock of the Breakers defence and Bethany North tried a couple of times to smartly lob the ball forward to set the forwards up. All around the ground the girls were showing their skills. Modra went on a fantastic weaving dribble through the Metro midfield. Amber Kim, on a run forward out of her normal defensive position, won another corner for the Breakers and Nuala Davis kept turning her midfield opponent inside out to dodge past. The game turned when a handball inside the Metro’s box delivered the Breakers a penalty.   O’Donnell stepped up and didn’t miss a beat in scooping the ball into the left corner of the net. It looked although the girls might get another with a fast break late in the game by Mohring and Ellis but the game ended with the 1-0 score line. Next week the girls are at home again with an 11am kick-off against Noarlunga United.Amber Kim stretches for the ball. Reigning premier Pulse has made their way through to a fourth successive A1 Grand Final in the Southern Hills Netball Association following their 46-34 win against Kangarilla in the second semi-final at Strathalbyn on Saturday. Kangarilla live to fight another day as they will play in the Preliminary Final next week against Clarendon. Clarendon had a convincing 74-39 win over Seaford Storm in the first semi-final which put an end to the Storm’s season.In the A2 competition, minor premier Noarlunga survived a scare in the second semi-final to progress to the Grand Final in two weeks time after a thrilling 40-39 win against a gallant McLaren Flat. McLaren Flat will face Clarendon in the cut-throat Preliminary Final next Saturday after the Dons defeated Southern Stars 42-37 in the first semi-final.

Happy Valley defeated Morphett Vale by 15 points, and in the process wrapped up the double chance, as the Southern Football League (SFL) minor round concluded yesterday. Happy Valley started well to lead by 22 points at halftime, 8.1 (49) to 3.9 (27). It was a real arm wrestle after halftime with Morphett Vale kicking two goals to one before the Vikings triumphed 9.4 (58) to 5.13 (43). Ben Geytenbeek kicked five goals for Happy Valley to give him 62 majors for the season to see him win the SFL leading goalkicker award. Braydan Hartwig was a standout up forward for Morphett Vale as he slotted four majors. James Hay, Dwayne Ruddock, Johnny Pegoraro, Harry Spacie and Ross Mullins were named best for the Vikings. For the third game in a row Bodie Sowter was named best for the Emus and he was well supported by David Sampson, Hartwig, Aiden Baker and Leroy Marsh.Flagstaff Hill won their 27th consecutive match yesterday and will go into the finals as red-hot favourites to win a sixth successive flag. This time their victim was Aldinga with the Falcons winning by 90 points, 21.26 (152) to 10.2 (62). It was an amazing first term as Aldinga took a surprising one-point lead to quarter time kicking 7.0 (42) to 6.5 (41). This seemed to jolt the Falcons into action as over the next three quarters they kicked 15.21 to 3.2. Flagstaff Hill shared the goals around with 11 different goalkickers with Daniel Butcher (6), Nathan Beenham (3), David Kearsley (2), Brad Patterson (2) and Tynan Carney (2) the multiple goalkickers. Daniel Sumner and Jason Martin kicked two goals each for the Sharks. Brayden Heyward-Ferors, Nathan Beenham, Mitch Johnson, Butcher and Patterson were best for ‘Flaggies’. Aldinga were best served by Martin, Jack O’Hanlon, Zach Young, Daniel Sumner and Angus Stangewitz.Reynella will enter the finals full of confidence after a convincing 87-point away win against Christies Beach. The Wine Flies lost just two games in the minor round (both to Flagstaff Hill) to finish in second spot on the ladder. Willunga claimed the minor premiership with a come-from-behind eight-point win against reigning premier Langhorne Creek during round 18 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) at Willunga Oval yesterday. Langhorne Creek started well to lead by 12 points at quarter time and they extended the margin out to a handy 25 points by halftime. Things were looking good for the Hawks to take the minor premiership and get the week off, but Willunga had other ideas. Urged on by the home crowd, the Demons stormed back into the contest during the third term as they kicked five goals to two to turn for home just four points in arrears. A further three goals to one in the final term saw Willunga triumph 11.9 (75) to 10.7 (67). Jake Standfield rolled back the clock as he slotted five majors for the Demons, while Job Colwell kicked two goals. Caleb Howell was a standout up forward for the Hawks with five goals, while Lachlan McGregor kicked three. Best players for Willunga were Colwell, Marcus Burdett, Standfield, Cameron McDonald and Nicholas Scanlan. Langhorne Creek was best served by Howell, Matt Dominish, Jarrod Kellock, Tom Derham and Ben Arbon.Mount Compass tuned up for their finals assault with a comprehensive 75-point away win at Yankalilla. The Bulldogs led by 34 points at quarter time, 49 points at halftime and 88 points at the last change before winning 21.13 (139) to 9.10 (64). The Mount Compass forwards had a field day with Lewis Johnston (8), Tom Pinyon (6) and Jordan Boots (5) leading the way. Pinyon finished the minor round with a league-leading 82 goals. Denver Ker kicked four goals for Yankailla. Corey Grove was named best for Mount Compass and he was ably supported by Johnston, the ever consistent Matthew Skrypek, Tomas Vitkunas and Brandon McKenzie. Chris Clark, Murphy Ames and Finn Betterman were among the best players for Yankalilla. Goolwa/Port Elliot finished off their 2021 campaign in style with their fourth win of the season, a comprehensive 60-point win against Victor Harbor. The loss consigned Victor Harbor to the wooden spoon. Goolwa/Port Elliot took a handy 35-point lead to halftime and added a further nine goals to five in the second half to win 22.11 (143) to 12.11 (83). The Magpies shared the goals around with 12 different goalkickers including former Carlton and West Adelaide player Adam Hartlett who kicked six majors. Hartlett was well supported by Zac Bates who kicked four goals. Rhys Mutch (5), Sam Basham (3) and Jaymes Hewett (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Kangaroos. A powerful second half saw McLaren kick 12 goals to seven and win 17.8 (110) to 9.10 (64). McLaren had 11 different goalkickers with Matthew Merrett leading the way with three goals. Dudley United has won their way through to a second semi-final date with minor premier Wisanger after a comprehensive 73-point win over Parndana in the Qualifying Final at Penneshaw on Saturday as the Kangaroo Island Football League (KIFL) finals series got underway. The Eagles dominated the game and the Roosters had no answers as Dudley United won 17.13 (115) to 6.6 (42). Kyron Pepper was the star up forward as he slotted seven majors for the Eagles. Troyston Corbett chipped in with four goals and Clayton Willson dobbed three. Ben Larsson kicked two goals for Parndana. Jack Gurney was adjudged best on ground for the Eagles and he was well supported by Ed Colley, Pepper, Willson and Kayne Wheaton. Zac Trethewey, Bailey Gaskin and Brodie Havelberg were among the best players for the Roosters.Western Districts progressed to the first semi-final on Sunday after a big 71-point win in their cut throat Elimination Final against Kingscote. Both sides have struggled this season with just one win each, but with the change to a top-five finals series, they both clinched a finals berth. Western Districts won easily with the final scores being Western Districts 16.13 (109) to Kingscote 5.8 (38). Strathalbyn jumped from fifth up to third on the ladder with one round remaining in the Great Southern Netball Association (GSNA) following their convincing 66-43 win against Goolwa. It sets up an intriguing encounter next week as Strathalbyn take on McLaren Vale with a finals spot on the line. In other games, McLaren Vale held onto fourth spot with a thrilling 36-33 victory against Mount Compass, Victor Harbor easily accounted for Yankalilla 61-36 and Willunga stayed in top spot with a 60-26 win at Myponga. The Breakers U13 girls travelled to Campbelltown on Sunday to take on the top team and came away with a nil-all draw after a hard-fought, physical tussle.Campbelltown are always strong from the first whistle and challenged the Breakers defence early.  As they have been all season, the combination of Amber Kim, Hannah Rowlands, Bethany North and Lokke-the-Blocker-Rennerts were up to the challenge.An early mistake by the Campbelltown goalie in picking up a pass-back, gave the Breakers a chance to score from another lovely free kick by Katye O’Donnell, The girls tried hard but just couldn’t quite get the ball where it needed to go.Coach O’Donnell tried to break the impasse by bringing Zara Yates and Nuala Davis on.  Hayley Modra and Alana Anderson were giving it all in the midfield but neither side could get an advantage.As the tough play continued, Hannah Rowlands went down injured and had to be helped from the field. At the start of the second half the team was still without Rowlands.   Taylor Perry stepped up and played some of the best football of her career, defending, dodging and taking on all comers.Lucy Boundey took a good shot in front of goal that just went wide and it was still anyone’s game to break through and win.Nila Mohring was the next casualty to need the trainer and had to go off after playing an intense game.A corner to Campbelltown raised Coach O’Donnell’s blood pressure but luckily the ball went out without testing goalie Ella Keam. A taped-up Rowlands came back on to try and lift the team and get the breakthrough needed.With Mohring still iced up on the bench Zara Yates went down heavily and had to be helped off by teammates, leaving the girls with no subs to call on.The game finished with no goals scored. It was a tough even game that showed off the skills and determination of both sides. The Breakers girls can be proud of matching the top team on their home turf. Next week’s game sees the girls back at home against Metro United who are currently just below them on the ladder.Suggestion for this week’s training session – any player found checking their phone while on the subs bench should get extra laps and pushups.

Willunga won their first Great Southern Football League Open Women’s premiership yesterday with a gallant nine-point win over reigning premier McLaren in the grand final at Victor Harbor. It was a tight, low scoring affair with just one goal kicked in the first half as Willunga led 1.2 (8) to 0.1 (1) at halftime. Willunga started to get on top in the third term as they kicked 1.4 to 0.0 and went to the last change with a handy 17-point lead. McLaren kicked their only goal of the game in the last quarter to give themselves a chance as they held Willunga scoreless, but the Demons prevailed to win 2.6 (18) to 1.3 (9). Lauren Clifton and Shae Archbold were the goalkickers for Willunga, while Tahlita Buethke kicked the Eagles only goal. Best players for Willunga were Ella Radbone, who was also best in the second semi-final, Courtney Gutschmidt, Bella Rigby, Clifton, Jodie Hunt and Caitlin Radbone. McLaren were best served by Gwen Humphreys, Layla Rogers, Tiffany Copley, Katrina Munzberg, Emily Rowe and Jenna Bowles.

Willunga won the Great Southern Football League under 17’s girls premiership following their 44-point win over Goolwa/Port Elliot in the grand final at Victor Harbor yesterday. Goolwa/Port Elliot started well, kicking the only goal of the first term to lead by five points at quarter time. Willunga got their game going in the second term as they kicked two goals to one and took a slender two-point lead at the long break. The third quarter was a real arm wrestle with neither team kicking a goal and the margin just a solitary point in favour of Willunga at the final change.
