Reigning premier Mount Lofty still in the hunt for the minor premiership in Hills Cricket

28 February 2022, 7:00 AM

Mount Lofty kept their minor premiership hopes alive with a comfortable six-wicket win against Stirling at Heathfield Oval yesterday in round 17 of the Hills Cricket Association (HCA). Mount Lofty take on Meadows in the final round next Saturday with the winner to get the coveted ‘double chance’ semi-final at home. Yesterday at Heathfield, Stirling batted first and it was tough going as the Eagles were bowled out in the 39th over for 139. Pete Fryer top scored with 40 from 43 balls (6 x 4’s, 1 x 6) and he was supported by Daniel Gonzalez (19) and Myles Collins (19). Five Redcaps bowlers took wickets with Adam Carthew (2/15), Peter Giannes (2/21) and Dave Bennett (2/32) leading the way. Mount Lofty got off to a steady start as the opening pair of Josh Healey and Adam Carthew put on 38 runs for the first wicket in 12 overs before Carthew was removed for 13 (31 balls). Healey was joined by his skipper Jordan Neis-Beer and this pair set after the target with a 47-run stand until Healey went for 49 (69 balls). Neis-Beer continued on to score 34 not out (80 balls) and he got solid support from Aaron Smith (16) and veteran Leith Dawes (16 not out) as the winning runs came up in the 38th over. Charlie Fryer (1/15), Kosta Sinodinos (1/18), Dan Parfitt (1/23) and Jack Read (1/25) were the wicket takers for Stirling.Aldgate kept themselves in the running for the double chance with a five-wicket win over Bridgewater at Aldgate Oval. The Raiders won the toss and decided to bat first and they were in all sorts of trouble as they slumped to 8/68 with Jackson Hooper (26) the only top order batsman to reach 20. Caleb Risson (23) and Finn Sullivan-Llewellyn then joined forces in a face-saving 44-run stand for the ninth wicket before Sullivan-Llewellyn added a further 42 runs for the 10th wicket with Nathan Sachse (12 not out) as Bridgewater reached 154. Sullivan-Llewellyn went on to top score with 34 from 54 balls (5 x 4’s). Jake Turnbull was the pick of the Aldgate bowlers with 3/17 (8) and he was well supported by Frank Clements (2/21), Matty Hansen (2/24) and Luke Smet (2/38). Aldgate were relatively untroubled in the run chase as Josh Callaghan (45), Will Quigley-Smith (45), Smet (20) and Connor Milde (20 not out) all contributed to the innings as the winning runs were brought up in the 39th over. Justin Summerill (2/21), Sullivan-Llewellyn (2/24) and Anthony Jennings (1/28) were the wicket takers for the Raiders.Kangarilla won their ninth game of the season with a comprehensive eight-wicket win against Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Kangarilla. SCIB won the toss and batted first but were soon reeling at 3/8. Daniel Desengo (14) and Conor Lidstone (10) tried to resurrect the innings but wickets continued to fall as the score was 6/35 when Ben McGowan entered the fray. He smashed a quickfire 32 from 29 balls (1 x 4, 2 x 6’s) but ultimately SCIB were bowled out for just 71 in the 32nd over. Five bowlers took wickets for ‘Kangies’ with Che Martinsen (3/7), Steve Featherstone (3/20) and Ryan Grimmond (2/12) leading the way. Kangarilla wasted no time in knocking off the victory target in the 18th over for the loss of just two wickets as Martinsen (40 not out) and Featherstone (19 not out) added 36 for the third wicket. McGowan continued his good day with 2/29 from seven overs. Meadows retained top spot on the HCA ladder with their ninth win in a row, this time by six wickets against Uraidla at Meadows. Uraidla batted first and was bowled out for just 88 in the 37th over. All six Bulldogs bowlers took wickets with Anthony Hughes (2/6), Tom Bevan-Giles (2/12), Will Bevan-Giles (2/16) and Brad Louch (2/19) the chief wicket takers. Meadows were in early trouble as they slipped to 4/27 and the Demons could sense a monumental upset. However, Uraidla’s hopes were dashed as Max Buckley and Marko Kovac combined for an unbroken fifth-wicket stand worth 65 runs. Buckley top scored with 46 not out, while Kovac finished on 18 not out. Ladder (after round 17)Meadows 75, Mount Lofty 72, Aldgate 72, Stirling 69, Kangarilla 57, Uraidla 24, Scott Creek Ironbank 24, Bridgewater 15.Round 18 fixture (home team named first)Mount Lofty v MeadowsKangarilla v AldgateStirling v UraidlaBridgewater v Scott Creek Ironbank

Strathalbyn Softball 'A' grade double header review
Strathalbyn Softball 'A' grade double header review

28 February 2022, 6:00 AM

Hills Softball Association ‘A’ Grade Women (Strathalbyn v Hills Masters - Game 1)Strathalbyn’s first game of the double header against the Hills Heat Masters opened with a hit to the outfield by Masters Kel O’Brien, who stole bases and was brought home by Emilie Noble before Strath could shut them down with a catch at centre field by Kim Cutting, catcher Tessa Norris taking a catch and an out from third baser Britt Jackson fielding and throwing to first to end the innings. Strath’s first batting dig was also short with a safe hit to Norris but she could not move further around the diamond as Masters short stop Hantie Pretorious fielded and played second base, then pitcher O’Brien fielded and picked off the lead runner which was followed by Pretorious again fielding and picking off the lead runner to send Strath from the diamond scoreless.Strath tightened up in the field for Masters second dig and even with safe hits to Kate Adamson and Kirsty Hailstone they were unable to add to their score with Strath’s shortstop Tash Mayes fielding cleanly and making two consecutive tag outs with the second almost making a double play and Jackson fielding well and throwing to first for the third out. Strath again were held scoreless but had safe hits to Mayes, Kelly Roe and a great hit by Casey Taylor in her first A grade game before Masters made a tag out at third, Noble took a catch and then received a throw from Pretorious for the third out.Masters had their batting hats on in the third and had safe hits to most players with two basers to Adamson, O’Brien, Kerry Wilkinson and a three baser to Pretorious which brought home ten runs while Cutting was on fire at centre for Strath taking three catches one of which was a full stretch slide. Strath needed to find good batting and had safe hits to Milne, Jackson and Roe but could not get runners home with an infield fly, a catch taken by third baser Wilkinson and an out at home sending them from the diamond. Some safe hits to Noble, Hailstone and Pretorious and several walks helped Masters push runners around the diamond to bring home a further six runs in their fourth turn at bat with Strathalbyn’s new pitcher Mayes working hard fielding and throwing to Roe now at first for the out, Milne now at third fielding and throwing home for the second and preventing another run and Mayes clutching a low line drive straight back at her feet to end the innings. Strath started their fourth dig well with Taylor getting another safe hit to get on base followed by Norris and Milne pushing them around the diamond to bring them all home for three with Masters making two outs at first and yet another pick off of the lead runner by Pretorious to end the innings and the game. Final scores were Hills Heat Masters 16 to Strathalbyn 3.Hills Softball Association ‘A’ Grade Women (Strathalbyn v Hills Masters - Game 2)In the second game of the double header for Strathalbyn and Hills Heat Masters, the Masters batted first and started their innings with a home run to Emilie Noble and safe hits to Hantie Pretorious, Sharon Perkins, Mis O’Keefe, Deb Hopgood and Lisa Wilson to help bring in five runs before Strath’s third baser Tiahna Mayes fielded well and threw to Kelly Roe at first to make two outs and the third to end the innings was a catch at centre field by Tash Mayes. Strath came in for their first turn at bat and started well with a two baser to Tessa Norris, a home run to Britt Jackson and safe hits to Kim Cutting, Ta Mayes, Roe, Ti Mayes, Casey Taylor and Kathryn Milne to bring nine runners home, while Masters first baser Emilie Noble was on fire receiving a throw from pitcher Lisa Wilson and then taking two catches to send the Panthers from the diamond. In their second batting dig, the Masters did not add to their tally even with safe hits to Pretorious, Perkins and O’Keefe with Strath’s shortstop Jackson combining with second baser Milne for the first out and then fielding and throwing to Roe at first base and again Ta Mayes took a catch at centre to end the innings. Strath again batted well with a three baser to Cutting and safe hits to Roe and Ti Mayes and included some walks to move runners around the diamond to bring home a further seven runs. Masters worked hard in the field with an infield fly, an out at third and an out at first by Noble to finish the innings.Masters came in for their third dig and had safe hits to Jane Wreghitt, Wilson and a two baser to Noble to add one run to their tally before Strath shut them down with a catch taken by pitcher Norris, an infield fly and then a catch taken at second by Milne ending the innings and the game as time was called with Strath finishing in front on the run tally. Final scores were Strathalbyn 16 to Hills Heat Masters 6.

27 February 2022, 10:30 PM

Willunga wrapped up their fifth consecutive minor premiership following their three-wicket win against Noarlunga on Saturday during round 10 action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). Willunga began the day on 3/38, needing just 42 more runs to win but they were soon under pressure, as three quick wickets to the Shoes reduced the Demons to 6/47 with teenagers Harry Jackson and Travis Bronstein causing all the damage. Jackson snared his best ‘A’ grade figures with 4/16 (12), while Bronstein took 2/12 (9). Luke Goldner (14 not out), Simon Roberts (10 not out) and Scott Brown (10) steadied the ship to see Willunga over the line with three wickets in hand. Willunga skipper Luke Harding top scored with 31 (83 balls) and took out the GSCA batting aggregate with 418 runs at an average of 41.80.Goolwa won their fifth game of the season with a comprehensive seven-wicket win over McLaren Districts at McLaren Vale, and in the process wrapped up third spot on the ladder and a date with Encounter Bay in the semi-final. Goolwa resumed on day two needing only 40 runs to take the victory after they bowled the Crushers out for 80 on day one and they wasted no time in reaching the victory target with Josh Jones (31 not out) and Fred Nissen (4 not out) there at the end. Andy Evans was joint top-scorer with 31. Jett Holberton, Stephen Nairn and Tom Daniels were the wicket takers for McLaren Districts. Port Elliot finished their season with a convincing 59-run win over finals-bound Encounter Bay at Port Elliot. The Bloods posted a competitive total of 187 on day one and the Bays started the run chase in disastrous fashion as they slumped to 4/26 early on day two. Max Longhurst (19) provided some resistance before the ‘old firm’ of Cam Lintern (52) and Sam Hoffmann (23) got their side back in the contest with a 57-run partnership before the Bays lost their last 4/9 to be bowled out for 128 in the 53rd over. All six Port Elliot bowlers took wickets with Ben Griffiths the standout. The off-spinner took 4/45 from his 14 overs and he was well supported by Liam Harris with 2/11 (6).The finals series starts on Saturday with Willunga taking on Noarlunga in the ‘double chance' semi-final at Port Elliot. These two sides have shared the past five GSCA ‘A’ grade premierships and the winner this weekend will go straight through to the Grand Final on March 19th and 20th. The other semi-final is a ‘do or die’ affair between Goolwa and Encounter Bay at Noarlunga. Aldgate claim Hills Cricket Association T20 title

24 February 2022, 9:45 PM

Aldgate won their second Hills Cricket Association (HCA) T20 title last night with a 21-run win against reigning champion Mount Lofty at Heathfield Oval. Aldgate skipper Jake Turnbull won the toss and decided to bat first and the ‘Gaters’ lost opening batsman Josh Callaghan (4) in the first over. Mitch Thomas and Luke Smet came together for a 39-run stand before Smet departed for 31 (20 balls). The loss of Smet brought the destructive Frank Clements to the crease and he combined hard running with some big hitting to put on 52 runs for the third wicket with Thomas (19). Clements continued on to score 75 not out from 52 balls. His innings included five boundaries and six sixes as Aldgate posted a very competitive total of 5/164 from their 20 overs. Peter Giannes (2/21) and Dave Bennett (2/27) were the pick of the Redcaps bowlers. Mount Lofty opened up with Josh Healey and ‘A’ grade East Torrens ‘guest’ player Henry Dall with Aldgate opening bowler Matty Hansen getting the big wicket of Healey (3). Aaron Smith (8) joined Dall to put on 28 runs for the second wicket before veteran Perry ‘Chainsaw’ Edwards entered the fray to dismiss Smith. Dall went shortly afterwards for 29 (40 balls) and he was quickly followed back to the pavilion by Adam Carthew, as the Redcaps slipped to 4/50. The dangerous Jack Sandercock was going well and he was joined at the crease by Stewart Leigh as the reigning champions got themselves back in the game through a 50-run fifth wicket stand. Just as the Redcaps were making progress, Leigh was run out for 14 (9 balls). Edwards struck a double blow to effectively end the contest as he clean bowled Sandercock for 34 from 21 balls (2 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) and then also bowled Jordan Neis-Beer to see the home side at 7/110. Bennett (23 from 16 balls) helped raise the final score to 8/143 as Aldgate celebrated their second HCA T20 title. Edwards was the pick of the bowlers with 3/16 (4) and he was well supported by Clements (2/43), Turnbull (1/21) and Hansen (1/31).

Langhorne Creek close in on the double chance in Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket
Langhorne Creek close in on the double chance in Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket

21 February 2022, 5:45 AM

Langhorne Creek moved up to second position on the ladder and has one hand on the double chance after round 16 action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). The ‘Creeks’ traveled to Callington to take on Bremer/Callington and the visitors won the toss and decided to bat first. It was tough going with the Tigers battling their way to 2/55 (23) at drinks with Ben Warren (28) and Brodie O’Dea (27) fighting hard. Handy contributions from Jaspa Tonkin (26 from 35 balls) and Troy Blackwell (26 from 21 balls) lifted Langhorne Creek to a competitive total of 8/161. Graydon Brand (3/28) and Amit Maina (3/30) were the leading lights with the ball for the Cobras. Ajay Pundir opened up well for Bremer/Callington with 43 from 69 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6), while Jai McMurtrie (23) and Chris Schilling (18) made handy contributions as the home side got themselves to 4/96. It was all Langhorne Creek from that moment on as they took the last six Cobras wickets for just 23 runs as the home side were dismissed in the 42nd over for 119. All seven Tigers bowlers took wickets with Warren (2/13), Darcy Paech (2/17) and Blackwell (2/27) the leading wicket takers. Lobethal kept themselves a game clear of fifth place with two rounds to go after their comprehensive eight-wicket victory at home against local rival Woodside. The Warriors batted first and struggled all innings before being bowled out for just 59 in the 38th over. Shane Collins (14) and Will Dunstall (13) were the only batsmen to reach double figures. Lobethal’s bowling was miserly as always with Mitch Weeks (3/12), Dave Huxter (3/12), Matt Martin (2/10) and Dillon King (1/9) sharing the wickets. The Tigers didn’t muck around in the run chase as the target was knocked off inside 12 overs. Martin top scored with 23 not out (26 balls), while Weeks made 17 (12 balls). Harrison Reid (1/11) and Jeremy Druwitt (1/16) were the wicket takers for Woodside. Strathalbyn kept pace with the top-four thanks to a comfortable 50-run win at Hahndorf on Saturday. The Stallions batted first and posted a competitive total of 6/205. The star of the show was former skipper Mark Abbott who top scored with 103 from 127 balls (9 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). It was Abbott’s eighth ‘A’ grade century. Veteran Steve Schofield made 46 from 72 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6) and was involved in an 84-run stand for the third wicket with Abbott. Brayden Hopgood (2/23) and Ryan Trafford-Walker (2/39) were the leading wicket takers for the Magpies. Hahndorf were soon under pressure as they slumped to 5/36 with ‘Strath’ skipper Brayden Gaiter doing most of the damage with figures of 4/34 (9). Henry Hassold (41) and Tim Knappstein (39 not out) battled hard as Hahndorf eventually batted out their 45 overs to finish on 9/155. Ben Cousins (1/15), Mark Abbott (1/18), Matthew Harris (1/34) and Matt Abbott (1/35) were the Stallions’ other wicket takers. Reigning premier Nairne won their 14th game of the season with a convincing 98-run win at Macclesfield. The Razorbacks batted first and saw handy contributions from Luke Timmins (34), Luke Harrowfield (33), Shane Kenney (25) and Mitch Hein (22) get them to 9/181 from their 45 overs. Lachlan Barrett (2/18), Luke Jones (2/22), Jay Dawson (2/25) and Connor Moore (2/42) led the way with the ball for the Redbacks. ‘Maccy’ were never in the hunt in the run chase as they were bowled out in the 29th over for 83. Barrett completed a good all-round game as he top scored with 35 for the Redbacks. Jarrad Tait rolled back the clock to take 5/23, his 11th five-wicket haul for the Razorbacks. He was well supported by Brodie Clarke (2/7) and Mitch Hein (2/23). Willunga set for minor premiership in the Great Southern Cricket Association
Willunga set for minor premiership in the Great Southern Cricket Association

20 February 2022, 7:15 AM

Willunga are in a great position to wrap up their fifth consecutive minor premiership after a dominant first day at Noarlunga during round 10 action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). Noarlunga won the toss and decided to bat first and it was tough going with the Willunga bowling lineup giving very little away. The Shoes battled their way to 1/36 before Luke Goldner took over as the home side lost their last 9/43 to be bowled out for 79. Goldner captured his 10th five-wicket haul for the Demons with the excellent figures of 6/19 from 17 overs. Simon Roberts (3/26) and Daniel Hockham (1/11) were the other wicket takers. Jason Scarff (22), Jeff Colo (18) and Cam Bullard (15) were the only Noarlunga batsmen to reach double figures. Willunga had 19 overs to face at the end of the day and got to stumps at 3/38 with skipper Luke Harding unbeaten on 23 (58 balls). Noarlunga teenagers Harry Jackson (2/9) and Travis Bronstein (1/0) shared the three wickets to fall.Goolwa are in an excellent position to win their fifth game of the season after bowling McLaren Districts out for just 80 on day one of their clash at McLaren Vale. At stumps the Magpies are 2/40 in reply. Goolwa skipper Jayden Crees won the toss and asked the Crushers to bat first and the home side were going along okay as they reached 3/59. That was as good as it got for McLaren Districts as they lost their last 7/21 to be bowled out for 80 in the 47th over. Luke Goodieson (20), Justin Twartz (14) and Stephen Nairn (12) were the only batsmen to reach double figures. Crees was outstanding again as he snared 5/20 (14), his 10th five-wicket haul for Goolwa. He was well supported by Josh Jones who took 3/24 from a marathon 20 overs. Goolwa had 23 overs to face before stumps and lost Jesse Consalvo (0) and Luke Giddings (14). Jones (18 not out) and Andy Evans (7 not out) will resume at the crease next Saturday. The game between Port Elliot and Encounter Bay is evenly poised after Port Elliot posted a competitive total of 187 on day one. The innings was set up by a 93-run stand for the third wicket between Ben Griffiths and Hayden Gordge. Griffiths made his first half century of the season as he top scored with 52 (104 balls), while Gordge finished with a patient 45 (150 balls). Tyson Somerfield added some impetus at the end of the innings with a quickfire 35 from 20 balls (7 x 4’s). The Bays tried eight bowlers with skipper Blake Bailey the standout with 4/52 from 21.5 overs. Cam Lintern (2/17), Zac Thompson (2/31) and Max Longhurst (1/12) were the other wicket takers for Encounter Bay.The round six game between Willunga and Port Elliot which was postponed on January 8th, was played today at Willunga with the Demons winning comfortably by 52 runs. Willunga batted first and posted a competitive total of 4/158 from their 40 overs. Skipper Luke Harding top scored with 46 (87 balls) and he was well supported by Simon Roberts (39 not out), Scott Brown (23) and Luke Goldner (23). Ben Griffiths (1/16), Ben Maier (1/20), Riley Paull (1/24) and Ben Martin (1/26) were the wicket takers for the Bloods. Port Elliot were never really in the hunt during the run chase as they were bowled out for 106 in the 36th over. Teenager Rhys Livingston made 18 (54 balls) on ‘A’ grade debut and skipper Joel Harris also made 18 (37 balls). Willunga used seven bowlers with Joe Last (2/11), Harding (2/11), Goldner (2/16) and Tye McIvor (2/17) the multiple wicket takers.

Meadows move to the top of the Hills Cricket Association ladder
Meadows move to the top of the Hills Cricket Association ladder

19 February 2022, 11:30 PM

Meadows won their eighth game in a row yesterday, and in the process went to the top of the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ladder. Their 140-run demolition of Kangarilla also put paid to ‘Kangies’ finals hopes after they were top at the Christmas/New Year break. Meadows skipper Rohan Reid won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first in glorious conditions at Meadows Oval. The ever reliable pair of Luke Tonkin and Haydn Reid opened proceedings with a 67-run stand before Tonkin went for 38 (51 balls). Haydn Reid continued on to bat through the entire innings to finish on 77 not out (106 balls). Reid is having a career-best season with 712 runs at 71.20 (2 x 100’s, 4 x 50’s). Handy contributions from Oscar Tydeman (30), Rohan Reid (25) and Max Buckley (24), lifted the Bulldogs to an imposing total of 5/219. Steve Featherstone (2/48) was the only multiple wicket taker for the visitors. Kangarilla’s run chase never really got going with Ryan Grimmond (17), Ben Ryan (13) and Featherstone (13) the only players to reach double figures. Four Meadows bowlers took wickets with Chad Dawe (4/13) and Brad Louch (4/19) the standouts. Dawe has ‘rolled back the clock’ this season with 26 wickets at 12.15, his best haul of wickets in A1 ranks since 2012/13, while Louch has hit form late in the season with 12 wickets from his last five outings. Mount Lofty kept their double chance hopes alive with a high scoring eight-run win at Aldgate Oval. There were a whopping 502 runs scored and an amazing 28 sixes hit for the match on (and over) the small confines of ‘The Swamp’. The Redcaps batted first and got off to an excellent start through Josh Healey and Adam Carthew who put on 106 runs for the first wicket before Healey fell for 83 from 57 balls (6 x 4’s, 8 x 6’s). Carthew then added 66 for the third wicket with Jordan Neis-Beer before Neis Beer went for 34 (48 balls). Carthew continued on to make 63 (75) as Mount Lofty posted 255 before being bowled out in the 39th over. Frank Clements (3/63), Matt Lennon (2/38) and Jake Turnbull (2/24) were the multiple wicket takers for the ‘Gaters’. Turnbull’s performance was particularly good considering he went at just three runs per over, while the rest of the attack went at more than a run-a-ball. Aldgate made a good fist of the run chase with some handy contributions from Josh Callaghan (34) and Frank Clements (30) getting the home side to 4/114. The best partnership of the innings came for the fifth wicket between Will Quigley-Smith and Connor Milde. This pair added 76 runs to give their side an outside chance at victory, but once Quigley-Smith went for 50 (44 balls), followed shortly afterwards by Milde for 42 (44 balls), the target proved beyond Aldgate as they finished their 40 overs on 8/247. Carthew (3/41), Will Healey (2/40) and Dave Bennett (2/60) were the main wicket takers for the reigning premier. Uraidla won their fourth game for the season with a high-scoring 20-run win against Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Cherry Gardens. Uraidla batted first and got off to a fantastic start with Alex Heptinstall and Pete Wilson adding 130 runs for the first wicket before Wilson departed for a patient 40 from 95 balls. Heptinstall was next to go for a fine 83 from 104 balls (11 x 4’s). It was Heptinstall’s third half century of the season. The Uraidla innings received some real impetus at the end as Simon Parker and Israel Symington came together for a whirlwind 64-run unbroken third wicket stand. Parker finished with 48 not out from 29 balls (4 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s), while Symington was particularly brutal with 32 not out from just 12 balls (2 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) as the Demons posted 2/218. John Dwyer (1/26) and Aaron Thompson (1/47) were SCIB’s wicket takers. Uraidla took the momentum from their batting innings into the field as SCIB slumped to 3/27. The in-form Tom Watton was joined by Daniel Desengo in a rescue mission as this pair added 64 runs for the fourth wicket before Watton departed for 42 (77 balls). Veteran Andy Adams was next in and he and Desengo got their side right back in the game with an 85-run partnership. Simon Parker (3/36) made a decisive double strike as Adams went for 46 (41 balls), followed by Desengo for 51 (65 balls) as SCIB ran out of time to finish on 9/198 from their 40 overs. Symington completed a fine all-round day with 3/24 from eight overs, while Renzo Gaetan (2/48) was the other multiple wicket taker for Uraidla. Stirling moved up to second spot on the HCA ladder with a comfortable seven-wicket win against Bridgewater at Basket Range yesterday. Eagles skipper Jack Pick won the toss and sent the Raiders in and it was tough going for ‘Bridgy’ as they struggled their way to 6/111 from their 40 overs against a miserly Stirling bowling attack. It could’ve been far worse as Bridgewater were 5/47 at one stage before Liam Sutcliffe (35 not out) and Brent Sutcliffe (30) put on 64 runs for the sixth wicket. Teenager Charlie Fryer was the standout bowler for the Eagles with 4/22 from eight overs. He was well supported by Ethan Penck with 2/25 (7). Daniel Gonzalez got the chase off to a fast start with 26 from 14 balls (3 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) but at 3/44, the Raiders still had a heartbeat. Harrison Webb and Kosta Sinodinos put an end to any Bridgewater hopes as they put on 71 runs in an unbroken fourth wicket stand as the winning runs were knocked off in the 20th over. Webb made 54 not out (37 balls), while Sinodinos finished with 22 not out (45 balls). Brent Sutcliffe completed a good all-round double with 2/18 from six overs. Ladder (after round 16)Meadows 69, Stirling 69, Mount Lofty 66, Aldgate 66, Kangarilla 51, Scott Creek Ironbank 24, Uraidla 24, Bridgewater 15.Round 17 fixture (home team named first)Meadows v UraidlaAldgate v BridgewaterMount Lofty v StirlingKangarilla v Scott Creek Ironbank

Strathalbyn Softball review

The second dig for Echunga produced bunts to Karayiannis and Lovelock, a walk to Margaret Jarrett and a three base hit to Eliza Lovelock bringing home three runs before Strath’s Sims fielded and threw to Roe at first who then quickly threw to catcher Rebekah Mayes for a tag out at home for a double play and Sims again throwing to first for the third out of the innings.Strathalbyn started their third turn at bat well with a hit to Mayes who worked her way around the diamond to eventually steal home with a slide, walks to Annabel McGregor, Roker and Heidi Samuel to load the bases and Sims with a huge hit to left field bringing everyone home with a Grand Slam for a total of five runs for the innings with Echunga making another catch and two outs at first to send them from the diamond. Noarlunga win a thriller against Encounter Bay in Great Southern Cricket

14 February 2022, 6:00 AM

Noarlunga wrapped up a top-two spot on the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) ladder after defeating Encounter Bay in a thriller by four runs on Saturday. It was the first time in their eight seasons in the GSCA that the Shoes have won an ‘A’ grade game at Encounter Bay. The Bays resumed at 1/10 in pursuit of Noarlunga’s first innings total of 166 and they started well with Dillon Burns (22) and Sam Hoffmann (20) adding 36 runs for the second wicket. The dismissal of Burns however saw the home side in trouble at 4/58. This brought skipper Blake Bailey and Cam Lintern together in what was looming as a crucial partnership. Lintern was the wicket Noarlunga needed and Cam Bullard (1/34 off 18 overs) did the trick as he caught and bowled Lintern for 32 with the score at 5/92. Bailey continued on to also make 32 as the game tightened up with the Bays needing 10 runs to win off the last two overs with just two wickets in hand with Anthony Burgess to bowl the penultimate over. Kieran Garrett (5 not out) took a single off the first ball and then Ryan Boyce (22) hit a boundary to see the equation in the Bays’ favour as they now required just five runs from 10 balls. Burgess stepped up to clean bowl Boyce and then dismissed Shane Hastings with his next ball to cue celebrations for Noarlunga. Burgess took the bowling honours for the Shoes with 4/52 from 19.4 overs, while opening bowler Matty Ray bowled a miserly 18 overs to capture 2/11. Willunga won their seventh game of the season with a comfortable 184-run win at home against McLaren Districts on Saturday. Willunga posted an imposing total of 7/266 last week with Simon Roberts (84) and Luke Harding (80) starring with the bat. On Saturday, McLaren Districts were never in the hunt during the run chase as they were bundled out for just 82 in the 34th over. Justin Twartz (24) was the only Crushers batsman to reach 20. All five Willunga bowlers took wickets with Luke Goldner (3/24), Daniel Hockham (3/26) and Tye McIvor (2/10) leading the way. Willunga also secured the ‘double chance’ with this win and will take on Noarlunga in the final minor round and then again in the semi-finals on March 5th and 6th.Goolwa all but secured their spot in the finals with a convincing six-wicket win against Port Elliot at Goolwa Oval on Saturday. The Magpies bowled Port Elliot out for just 72 last week and resumed on Saturday in a commanding position at 1/48. The Bloods started day two well as they claimed three quick wickets to reduce Goolwa to 4/62. Opening batsman Fred Nissen top scored with 32, while Andy Evans (28 not out) and Dean Vickery (16) added 43 for the fifth wicket as Goolwa reached 6/124 before stumps were drawn early. Simon Donaldson and Tyson Somerfield claimed two wickets each for Port Elliot. The round six match between Willunga and Aldinga that was postponed on January 8, will be played at Willunga on Sunday 20 February. Langhorne Creek win the battle of the Tigers in Alexandra & Eastern Hills cricket
Langhorne Creek win the battle of the Tigers in Alexandra & Eastern Hills cricket

13 February 2022, 9:00 PM

Langhorne Creek has all but sewn up a finals berth following their tight eight-run win against Lobethal during round 15 action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) at Langhorne Creek on Saturday. The home side batted first and it was tough going as they battled their way to 8/150 from their 45 overs. James Dawson anchored the innings against a tight Lobethal bowling attack to top score with 54 from 122 balls. Brodie O’Dea (16) and Shannon Jones (15) were next best for the Southern Tigers. Five Lobethal bowlers took wickets with Lachlan Elsworthy (2/20), Dillon King (2/25) and James Elliott (2/31) leading the way. Lobethal also found the going tough with the bat as they slipped to 5/53 with Ben Matthews (26) the only top-five batsman to reach 20. Elsworthy (28) and Sam Graeber (27) battled hard to get the game to the last over but Graeber’s dismissal brought an end to the Lobethal run chase with two balls left in the game. It was a fine all-round performance from the Langhorne Creek bowling group with skipper Daniel Cleggett the standout with 3/16 from his nine overs. Cleggett has taken 14 wickets in his last four outings. He was well supported by Darcy Paech who captured 3/32 (9). Woodside pulled off a thrilling one-wicket win at Macclesfield to consolidate their spot in the top-four on Saturday. The Redbacks batted first and got off to a good start through opening batsmen Kieran O’Connell (38) and Tom Filsell (20). Joshua Clarke (28 not out) and Connor Moore (25) made handy contributions as the home side put up a competitive total of 7/155 after 45 overs. Harrison Reid (2/27) and Jeremy Druwitt (1/17) were the best of the Warriors bowlers. Dave Wescombe got Woodside off to a fast start with 34 from 36 balls but the Redbacks started getting on top as Joe Lions (3/22) and Lachlan Barrett (2/21) ran through the Warriors top order, reducing them to a precarious 6/81. The innings was turned around as Chris Baschiera came to the crease and smashed a quickfire 41 from just 38 balls (3 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). However three quick wickets fell, including Baschiera, for just 12 runs to leave Woodside needing nine runs from 24 balls with the last pair of Reid (2 not out) and Druwitt (5 not out) at the crease. The 42nd over went for three runs before Druwitt hit a boundary from the bowling of Joshua Lewis-Burns in the 43rd over and then in something of an anti-climax, the winning runs came via wides. For the second consecutive week, Bremer/Callington have been bowled out for less than 50, this time for just 25, as Strathalbyn banked a percentage boosting 10-wicket win on their home ground. Strathalbyn won the toss and sent the Cobras into bat and the move paid immediate dividends as Bremer/Callington collapsed to be 5/7. Dion Rehn (11) was the only Cobra to reach double figures as the innings was wound up in just 13 overs. Wides (5) was the second top scorer. Tim Dellatorre (5/10) and skipper Brayden Gaiter (5/14) were the only two bowlers needed for ‘Strath’. The Stallions wasted no time chasing down the runs without loss in the fourth over. The win keeps Strathalbyn just four points outside the top-four. Reigning premier Nairne all but wrapped up the minor premiership with a convincing 132-run win over local rival Hahndorf at Nairne Oval. The Razorbacks batted first and were in early trouble at 2/9. Robert Crook made his second consecutive half century with 61 from 72 balls (8 x 4’s). and Shane Kenney made a hard-hitting 45 (56 balls). Jarrad Tait (17), Brodie Clarke (17) and Chad Harrop (16 not out) made handy contributions as Nairne posted a good total of 216. Lachlan Huxtable (3/32), Henry Hassold (3/42), Ryan Trafford-Walker (2/33) and Mark Trafford-Walker (2/40) were the multiple wicket takers for the Magpies. Hahndorf were never in the run chase as only Huxtable (25) and Greg Hassold (18) made it to double figures as they were fired out for just 84 in 35 overs. The powerful Nairne bowling attack shared the wickets around with Tait (3/18), Matt Hein (3/25), Harrop (2/8), Jacob Sadler (1/3) and Mitch Hein (1/10) the wicket takers. In a nice touch on a tough day for the Magpies, there were four father-son combinations in the Hahndorf side in the form of the Baker’s, Hassold’s, Trafford-Walker’s and Knappstein’s. Ladder (after round 15)Nairne 52, Woodside 40, Langhorne Creek 40, Lobethal 36, Strathalbyn 32, Hahndorf 16, Macclesfield 12, Bremer/Callington 12.Round 16 fixture (home team named first)Hahndorf v StrathalbynMacclesfield v NairneLobethal v WoodsideBremer/Callington v Langhorne Creek

Top-four starts to take shape in the Hills Cricket Association

Stirling defeated fellow finals aspirant Kangarilla by three wickets during round 15 action in the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) at Stirling Oval yesterday. Kangarilla are now in real danger of missing out on finals action after being top of the ladder at Christmas, while Stirling have all but cemented their spot in the major round. Kangarilla batted first and were soon in trouble as they crashed to 3/5. Lachlan Knight (14) led a small recovery, but at 6/28 it appeared the visitors would be lucky to reach 50. The Stirling opening pair of Pete Fryer and Daniel Parfitt did all the damage with 3/11 and 3/22 respectively. Ben Ryan and Cam Venter came together for Kangarilla and this pair completely changed the complexion of the game with a crucial 83-run stand for the seventh wicket before Ryan was dismissed for 54 from 62 balls (4 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Venter went on to score 50 not out from 72 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as ‘Kangies’ managed to reach a competitive 9/145 from their 40 overs. Kangarilla carried the momentum gained in the back half of their batting innings into the field as they came out firing, reducing Stirling to 4/27 in the 13th over. Fryer (22) and Harrison Webb (40) steadied the ship with a 66-run fifth wicket stand, but when this pair were both dismissed within the space of just four balls, Kangarilla were back on top with the home side at 6/97. Enter Jack Read who played a brilliant cameo with 38 from just 25 balls (2 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) to take Stirling to the brink of victory which duly came thanks to teenager Charlie Fryer (9 not out), who hit the winning runs in the 37th over. Ryan Grimmond (2/12) and Steve Featherstone (2/25) were the pick of the bowlers for Kangarilla. Meadows won their seventh game on the trot following a comfortable 131-run victory at home against Bridgewater. The powerful Meadows batting lineup was once again dominant as they posted 5/199 from their 40 overs. Haydn Reid continued his excellent season with 66 (93 balls) and he was well supported by Luke Tonkin (40), Rohan Reid (24) and Anthony Hughes (23). Brent Sutcliffe (2/31) was the multiple wicket taker for Bridgewater. The Raiders were never in the hunt during the run chase as they were bowled out for just 68 in the 37th over. Brad Louch bowled an inspiring spell to finish with the impressive figures of 4/6 from five overs. Tom Bevan-Giles (3/29) extended his streak of three-wicket performances to five in a row and now has 21 wickets for the season. Max Buckley (1/7), Chad Dawe (1/10) and Rohan Reid (1/13) were the other wicket takers for the Bulldogs. Acting Aldgate skipper Josh Callaghan scored his maiden ‘A’ grade ton as the Gaters demolished Uraidla by 136 runs in their round 15 clash at Uraidla. Callaghan made 104 not out from 113 balls (9 x 4’s, 4 x 6’s) in a drought-breaking performance after previously having made nine ‘A’ grade half centuries. Callaghan and Mitch Thomas (42) put on 80 runs for the first wicket before Callaghan and Angas Wauchope (23) put on 76 runs for the fifth wicket to lift their team to 4/234 from their 40 overs. Jamie Kha (2/21) was the only multiple wicket taker for the Demons. Peter Wilson got Uraidla off to a reasonable start as the home side reached 2/56 with Wilson contributing 42 from 70 balls (7 x 4’s). Aldgate then took over to take the last eight Demons wickets for just 42 runs as the home side were bowled out for 98 in the 36th over. All five Aldgate bowlers took wickets with Will Turner (3/21) leading the way. Frank Clements (2/9), Jake Turnbull (2/20) and Matt Lennon (2/30) were the other multiple wicket takers. Mount Lofty won their 10th game of the season after a hard-fought 40-run victory over Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Heathfield Oval. The reigning premier were in all sorts of trouble as they slumped to 7/34 before Will Healey (10) and Sam Furber put on 25 for the eighth wicket. Furber was then joined by veteran Dave Bennett in a match defining partnership for the ninth wicket worth 53 runs before Furber went for 31 (55 balls). Bennett finished with a top scoring 34 not out (47 balls) with the Redcaps posting 9/118 from their 40 overs. Daniel Desengo (3/22), Aaron Thompson (2/13) and Beau Thomas (2/25) were the chief destroyers for SCIB. The visitors got themselves into a good position as they reached 4/71 with last week’s century maker Tom Watton on 32. Watton’s dismissal precipitated a dramatic collapse as Redcaps spinner Aaron Smith claimed a hatrick in his third over and four wickets in five balls on his way to the incredible figures of 5/4 from 3.1 overs! SCIB lost their last 6/7 to be routed for 78 in the 33rd over. Ladder (after round 15)Aldgate 66, Meadows 63, Stirling 63, Mount Lofty 60, Kangarilla 51, Scott Creek Ironbank 24, Uraidla 18, Bridgewater 15.Round 16 fixture (home team named first)Aldgate v Mount LoftyMeadows v KangarillaScott Creek Ironbank v UraidlaBridgewater v Stirling
