Wisanger break a 16-year drought to win the Kangaroo Island Football League premiership

05 September 2021, 10:00 PM

Wisanger won their first Kangaroo Island Football League (KIFL) ‘A’ grade premiership since 2005 with a 25-point win over a gutsy Western Districts outfit at Parndana on Saturday. Wisanger came into the game as favourites, having lost just one game for the season. Western Districts had an amazing finals run, winning three consecutive games on their way to the decider. Wisanger started well to lead by 20 points at quarter time. Western Districts got themselves right back in the game as they kicked four goals to one in the second term to trail by just one point at halftime. The third quarter is often called the ‘premiership quarter’ and so it turned out to be for the Panthers as they kicked six goals to two to go to the last change with a handy 29-point buffer. The last quarter was pretty even with Wisanger going on to win 12.13 (85) to 8.12 (60). Sam Clifford kicked five goals for Wisanger, while Dustin Cross kicked three. Lleyton Hedges kicked three goals for Western Districts. Brok Viney-Obst, Cross, Liam Sampson, Luke Stewart and Luke Bowd were named as Wisanger’s best players. Best for Western Districts were Damon Weatherspoon, Dylan Lockett, Josh Graham, Ty Boyle and Tim Larcombe. In other grades, it was a good day for Kingscote as they won their third ‘B’ grade flag in a row with a comfortable 44-point win against Dudley United. Kingscote also won the Senior Colts premiership with a convincing 76-point win against Western Districts.

31 August 2021, 11:30 PM

Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill handed 2021 minor premier Reynella its first loss of the season, and in the process reached their second consecutive Grand Final in the Southern Football League Women’s (SFLW) competition. Reynella went into the game as favourites but Flagstaff Hill had the bonus of playing at home. The home side came out of the blocks fast to take a handy 14-point lead at quarter time. Reynella kicked the only goal of the second quarter to reduce the margin to eight points at halftime. ‘Flaggies’ were struggling to score as the Wine Flies again kicked the only goal of the third term to turn for home just three points in arrears. Flagstaff Hill steadied in the last, adding their first goal since quarter time while keeping Reynella goalless, as the Falcons won 3.4 (22) to 2.1 (13) in a classic tight finals game. Isobel Dyson kicked two goals for Flagstaff Hill and Soriah Moon kicked one. Reynella’s goalkickers were Emily Franklin and Emily Woods. Best players for the Falcons were Emily Erickson, Dyson, Moon, Chloe Meyers and Shay’Lee Dayman. Olivia Gallio, Renee Wurfel, Madison Bennett, Anja Bancevic and Jessica Redigolo were named best for the Wine Flies.Cove has progressed to the Preliminary Final following their come-from-behind seven-point win against Christies Beach in Sunday’s first semi-final at Morphett Vale. Christies Beach started well to lead by nine points at halftime but the ‘premiership quarter’ would prove the difference as Cove poured on the pressure as they added 3.5 to 0.0 to turn for home with a handy 14-point buffer. ‘Christies’ battled hard in the final term to kick two goals to one but it wasn’t enough as the Cobras prevailed 6.7 (43) to 5.6 (36). Emma Fitzpatrick kicked three goals for Cove while Jaime Norup, Dana O’Brien, Felicity Oliver, Fitzpatrick, Samantha Franson and Lauren Pattimore were named their sides best players. Nicole Campbell kicked two goals and was named best for the Saints. Other good players for her side were Melanie Koster, Daisy Crowe, Angelique Dean, Rachael Farlam and Talia Vivar. Sunday 5 September (1.35pm @ Flagstaff Hill)Reynella v Cove (Preliminary Final)

Reynella just one win away from a Grand Final berth in the Southern Football League

30 August 2021, 7:00 AM

Reynella are through to a second semi-final date with reigning premier Flagstaff Hill following their comprehensive 46-point Qualifying Final win over Happy Valley in the Southern Football League (SFL) on Saturday. The Wine Flies lost just two games for 2021 and they look the only obvious threat to the Falcons winning their sixth consecutive flag. It was a tight first half with Happy Valley taking it right up to Reynella as the Wine Flies took a slender, five-point lead to halftime. The all-important third quarter was where the game changed completely as Reynella piled on seven goals to two to take a very handy 34-point lead to the last change. A further two goals to none in the last term saw Reynella win 15.5 (95) to 7.7 (49). Callan Semple (4), Bailey Marshman (3), Bradley Potter (3) and Dylan Roser (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the winners. Ben Geytenbeek kicked three goals for the Vikings and Josh Sterzl kicked two. Tyler Davies, Steven Farrelly, Thomas Thomson, Josh Frisby, Nicholas Dixon and Sam Whitbread were named best players for the Wine Flies. For Happy Valley, Ben Ryan, Justin Schurgott, Geytenbeek, Dwayne Ruddock and Liam Hamilton were their best. The Vikings live to fight another day as they head to Noarlunga on Sunday to play Morphett Vale in the knockout first semi-final.Morphett Vale came from behind to defeat Noarlunga by seven points in the Elimination Final at Aldinga yesterday and booked a date with Happy Valley in Sunday’s first semi-final. After being runners-up for the past two seasons, it’s the end of the road for the Shoes after week one of the finals. It was an interesting match with 13 of the 14 goals for the day kicked with the breeze. Noarlunga had the breeze in the first term and took a 14-point lead at quarter time after Morphett Vale kicked the only goal of the match into the wind. Morphett Vale hit back in the second quarter to lead by five points at halftime before Noarlunga again took the lead at the last change by 14 points. The Emus had the wind behind them in the last quarter as they roared home to kick 4.1 to 0.4 and win 8.3 (51) to 6.8 (44). Ryan Fitzpatrick, Daniel Noble and Denis Iljcesen all kicked two goals for Morphett Vale. Best for Morphett Vale were Steven Byrne, Michael Smith, Connor Lock, Aiden Baker and Daniel Earl. Another win for Breakers girls at home
Another win for Breakers girls at home

29 August 2021, 7:45 AM

The Breakers U13 girls scored another home win on Sunday against Noarlunga United despite losing players to injury and unavailability. With regular keeper Ella Keam busting an ankle, Lucy Boundey stepped into goals again. The game looking promising early with much of the play in the Breakers attacking half.  An early corner taken by Katye O’Donnell delivered a beautiful ball into the box but the forwards just couldn’t quite get to it in time. Up the other end, Boundey made a great save although the throw-out was a little miss-timed, hitting Zara Yates in the back on the way out. Nila Mohring had the crowd on their feet when she went one-on-one with the Noarlunga goalie and was just unlucky not to get the ball past and into the net. Back in the midfield Abby Ellis and Taylor Perry were running hard, chasing down and winning against their opponents. Towards the end of the half the girls started to get a little loose in defence. But then Hannah Rowlands thundered a goal kick up to Alana Anderson, who deftly turned her opponent inside out, getting the Breakers back into attack.  A handball delivered a penalty to the Breakers girls and O’Donnell didn’t skip a beat in shooting into the top left corner to score the first goal of the match. Only seconds later the whistle blew for halftime. The second half started with Modra, Rowlands, Lokke Rennerts and Bethany North working fantastically together in defence and the Noarlunga team started to show frustration towards one another.    Perry was still getting the best of her midfield opponent and up forward Anderson, Nuala Davis and Ellis were creating multiple chances. Finally, a well taken pass by Mohring saw O’Donnell toe-poke in the Breakers’ second. Coach O’Donnell then brought super-sub Polly Nelson on to bolster the team in the last few minutes of the game. Again, as has happened so often this year, a handball in the box resulted in another penalty, this time for Noarlunga. Boundey tried her best but the ball just stretch over her and the score went to 2-1. Only moments later the full time whistle sounded and the girls scored a well-deserved win that had some great effort and teamwork across the pitch. Next week the girls are at home again, with an 11am Fathers Day game against Salisbury.

Southern Football League Women's finals begin Sunday
Southern Football League Women's finals begin Sunday

27 August 2021, 7:30 AM

The Southern Football League Women’s (SFLW) finals series begins on Sunday with the four best teams in the competition set to battle it out for premiership glory. The second semi-final sees a Grand Final rematch from 2020 with Reynella taking on Flagstaff Hill. Reynella has been the pacesetter this season, winning all 12 games on their way to the minor premiership. The biggest threat to the Wine Flies winning their first SFLW flag will be reigning premier Flagstaff Hill, who lost just two games in 2021, both to Reynella. The last time they met was back on July 18 with Reynella winning a tight, low-scoring battle by seven points and I expect this Sunday’s game will be another tight affair. In the first semi-final, Cove will face off against Christies Beach with the loser saying goodbye to the 2021 season, while the winner will progress to the Preliminary Final. Cove has the finals pedigree, having won SFLW premierships in 2018 and 2019. Christies Beach were minor premiers last season but bowed out in ‘straight sets’ so they’ll be desperate to make amends. The teams met just once in the minor round, way back on May 2, when ‘Christies’ won convincingly by 57 points. Final LadderReynella 24, Flagstaff Hill 20, Cove 12, Christies Beach 12, Port Noarlunga 6, Aldinga 6, Hackham 0.Week 1 finals fixture (Sunday 29 August @ 1.35pm)Reynella v Flagstaff Hill (2nd Semi-Final @ Flagstaff Hill)Cove v Christies Beach (1st Semi-Final @ Morphett Vale)

The Panthers had the added bonus of playing the semi-final on their home deck and they made it count as they won 23.7 (145) to 12.10 (82). Luke Stewart was a star up forward for Wisanger as he kicked 10 goals in a best on ground performance. Western Districts won just one match in the minor round and actually finished on the bottom (fifth) of the ladder, but the KIFL went to a top-five finals series this season and now the Saints are just one win from a Grand Final spot! Breakers U13 girls win over Metros
Breakers U13 girls win over Metros

23 August 2021, 12:03 AM

The Breakers U13 girls scraped a narrow 1-0 win at home against Metro United in a tense game played in beautiful sunny conditions on Sunday. The Breakers started with the advantage of the northerly breeze and had the ball in their attack in the early part of the play. Lucy Boundey delivered a nice ball down the wing early on and Kayte O’Donnell pitched in a great cross but the petite Metro goalie showed great skill in blocking the shot. O’Donnell and Nila Mohring worked well up forward but frustratingly the girls just couldn’t quite get through.   They got painfully close from a corner, with the ball just slicing past the wrong side of the post. Zara Yates and Abby Ellis were also working hard in the midfield, pushing the ball up forward. Lokke Rennerts showed her defensive best again, coming out best against two Metro forwards on her own. The second half saw Metro gain momentum, winning corners and giving goalie Ella Keam a bit more to do.  Alana Anderson showed some nice touches in delivering the ball back out of defence.  Hannah Rowlands was again the bedrock of the Breakers defence and Bethany North tried a couple of times to smartly lob the ball forward to set the forwards up. All around the ground the girls were showing their skills. Modra went on a fantastic weaving dribble through the Metro midfield. Amber Kim, on a run forward out of her normal defensive position, won another corner for the Breakers and Nuala Davis kept turning her midfield opponent inside out to dodge past. The game turned when a handball inside the Metro’s box delivered the Breakers a penalty.   O’Donnell stepped up and didn’t miss a beat in scooping the ball into the left corner of the net. It looked although the girls might get another with a fast break late in the game by Mohring and Ellis but the game ended with the 1-0 score line. Next week the girls are at home again with an 11am kick-off against Noarlunga United.Amber Kim stretches for the ball.
