Reigning premier Langhorne Creek and 2019 runner-up Willunga played out the first draw of the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) season at Langhorne Creek on Saturday. When the final siren rang, the sides were locked on 12.12 (84) each. Willunga got off to a good start to lead by 12 points at quarter time before Langhorne Creek bounced back in the second term to trail by just one point at the long break. The Demons took over in the third quarter as they kicked five goals to two to take a handy 23-point lead at the last change. Buoyed on by their home crowd, Langhorne Creek roared back into the contest as they kicked 6.2 to 2.3 in the final quarter to force the points to be shared. Caleb Howell kicked four goals and was named best player for the Hawks. Brett Miegel led the way for the Demons with three majors. Joining Howell in the best players for Langhorne Creek was Coby Helyar, Curtis Perrey, Troy Blackwell and Damien James. Best for Willunga was Brian Fenton, James Collier, Cam Hutchens, Miegel and Job Colwell.Mount Compass returned to the top of the GSFL ladder following their comfortable 63-point home win against Yankalilla. ‘Compass’ welcomed back gun forward Tom Pinyon and also added a handy inclusion in former 130-game Crows player, Jason Porplyzia. After a low scoring first quarter saw Mount Compass lead by eight points at quarter time, the home side completely dominated the last three quarters as they added 10 goals to two to win 12.13 (85) to 3.4 (22). The returning Pinyon kicked five goals while Lewis Johnston kicked three. Best for the Bulldogs was Nick Mott, Peter Hoban, Nathan Hicks, Johnston and Sam Haniford. Yankalilla, under new coach ‘Micka’ James, were best served by Finn Betterman, Chris Clark, Mackenzie Ryan, Joel Kay and Kaleigh Fitzgerald.Encounter Bay moved back inside the top five at the midway point of the season following their 55-point win at Myponga against the Mudlarks. The first three quarters were nip and tuck with the Bays leading by nine points at quarter time, five points at halftime and by six points at the final change. The Mudlarks were right in the hunt for their first win of the season with just 30 minutes left in the game but sadly, for them, it was all Encounter Bay in the final term. The Bays slammed on 8.2 to 0.1 in the last quarter to win 14.8 (92) to 5.7 (37). Gary Karpany kicked five goals in a best-on-ground performance for Encounter Bay while Ben Davis chimed in with three majors. Joining Karpany in the best players for the Bays was Fraser Tonkin, Ben Davis, Cohen Pettitt and Mitch Davis. Best for the Mudlarks was Harrison Cock, Sam Kennedy, Cambell Dahlitz, Ben Hamilton and Daniel Trevena.McLaren consolidated their spot in the top five with a grinding nine-point win at Strathalbyn. The first quarter was a tight one with scores locked away at 4.1 (25) apiece at the first change. The Eagles kicked four goals to two in the second term to lead by 12 points at halftime. Each team picked five goals apiece in the second half as McLaren banked a very important two points as they won 13.8 (86) to 11.11 (77). Joel Chahla continued his good recent form as he jagged five majors for McLaren and he was well supported by Jordon Mutton who kicked three. Marc Elliott led the Roosters with three goals of his own. For the third game in a row, Todd McKay was named best for McLaren. Other good players for the Eagles were Kiefver Zohar, Chahla, Matthew Merrett and Joel Vandeleur. Brodie Martin, Lachlan Butler, Richard O’Grady, Marc Elliott and Mark Tucker were best for Strathalbyn. Goolwa/Port Elliot won their second game for 2021 with a 28-point win at Victor Harbor. The Magpies started well as they kicked 5.5 to 3.0 and led by 17 points at quarter time. They extended their lead out to 18 points at halftime and after kicking three goals to none in the third quarter, they turned for home with a handy 37-point margin. Victor battled hard to win the last term but the Magpies prevailed 12.9 (81) to 8.5 (53). Former Carlton and West Adelaide player, Adam Hartlett, kicked five goals on debut for Goolwa/Port Elliot while Fred Nissen kicked two. Billy Wade and Sam Basham each kicked two goals for the Kangaroos. Daniel Fry, Ben Cummings, Tyron Rigney, James Fry and Sam Priest were best for Goolwa/Port Elliot while best for Victor Harbor was Brok Schubert, Billy Wade, Seb Guilhaus, Dylan Kleinig and Zac Dowling.  The competition takes a break for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend next week with the GSFL set to host the Southern Football League at Strathalbyn Oval on Saturday (12 June). There will be five games played on the day with the gates opening at 7.30am. Noarlunga won their fourth game of the season and moved within percentage of third spot following their comprehensive 94-point victory against Cove during round eight action in the Southern Football League (SFL) on Saturday. The Shoes started well to lead by 22 points at quarter time and the game was as good as over at halftime as Noarlunga kicked eight goals to one in the second stanza to take a 66-point lead into the long break. A further nine goals to five in the second half saw Noarlunga win 22.14 (146) to Cove 8.4 (52). Vic Robertson was a star up forward for the Shoes as he kicked nine goals in a best on ground performance. Reece Martell (6), Callum Gaspari (3) and Josh Thewlis (3) were the other multiple goalkickers for Noarlunga. Jayden Morton kicked three goals for the Cobras while Blake Harding kicked two majors. Joining Vic Robertson in the best players for the Shoes was Sam Carlyle, Martell, Nick Robertson and Gaspari. Best for the Cobras was Hayden Kernahan, Morton, Ryan Need, Corey Jackson and Scott Abbott.Christies Beach had their second win of the season with a 37-point win over local rival Port Noarlunga at Bice Oval. Christies got off to a good start to lead by 25 points at quarter time and they extended their lead out to 47 points by halftime as they took control of the game. ‘Porties’ battled hard to win the second half but the damage had been done as the Saints won 16.11 (107) to 11.4 (70). Blake Carter kicked five goals for Christies while Matthew Coulthard led the way for the Cockle Divers with three majors. Aidan Coakley continued his good season to be named best for Christies Beach and he was well supported by Lee Hoey, Rhys Mundy, Jacob Crate and Josh Semmens. Port Noarlunga’s best were Alex McKay, Coulthard, Sam Zeitz, Connor Sampson and Will Hyndman. Morphett Vale kept their spot in the top five with a come-from-behind victory at Aldinga on Saturday. Morphett Vale led by six points at quarter time before Aldinga took over as a powerful second term saw them kick six goals to three to take a handy 14-point lead to the main break. The game tightened up again in the third quarter as scores were level at 9.8 (62) apiece at the last change. Morphett Vale produced a powerful last quarter burst of six goals to one to win by 27 points, 15.9 (99) to 10.12 (72). Denis Iljcesen (4) and Joel Handreck (3) led the goal kickers for the Emus while the Sharks’ Timmy Sumner dobbed four majors. Jared Greenbank was best for the fast finishing Emus and he was ably supported by Braydan Hartwig, Handreck, Jack Barter and Connor Lock. Best players for Aldinga included Michael Balas, Sam Noble, Byron Sumner, Angus Stangewitz and Timmy Sumner.The Flagstaff Hill machine rolled on to a 20th consecutive victory on Saturday, this time by 93 points at Happy Valley. The opening term was tight with 2021’s big improvers in Happy Valley only trailing by six points at the first break. However, from then on it was all the Falcons as they kicked 16 goals to two to win 19.9 (123) to 4.6 (30). As usual ‘Flaggies’ had plenty of avenues to goal with nine different goalkickers led by Daniel Butcher with five while Ryan Mountford kicked four. Sam Tharaldsen continued his excellent season for the reigning premier to be named best on ground. He was well supported by Brayden Heyward-Ferors, Tynan Carney, Mountford and Michael Shearer. Goolwa/Port Elliot have put themselves in the race for a finals berth in the Great Southern Football League Women’s (GSFLW) competition after an upset 12-point win over McLaren at Mount Compass. Fresh off beating Strathalbyn for the first time last week, the Magpies continued their good form to knock off the reigning premier Eagles, 4.3 (27) to 2.3 (15). Jaimi Griffen (2), Kerrie-Ann Moon and Megan Hoad were the goal kickers for the victorious Magpies. Stephanie Warn and Sophia Flanagan-Sjoberg kicked McLaren’s two goals. Asha Bell continued her excellent season to be named best for Goolwa/Port Elliot and she was well supported by Amber McKinlay, Jessica Bailey, Rachel Searle and Kaya Angus. McLaren were best served by Alycia Hepburn, Ally Bailey, Tahlita Buethke, Jessica Veasey and Warn.Mount Compass returned to the winners circle in emphatic fashion with an 88-point win over Encounter Bay. The Bulldogs led by 13 points at quarter time, 28 points at halftime and 61 points at the last change before winning 13.10 (88) to 0.0 (0). Elke Jarvis led the way for ‘Compass’ with five goals while Demi Sharp and Kiahni Russell added three goals each. For the third time this season Sharp was adjudged best on ground for the Bulldogs. Other good players for the winners were the consistent Amy Taylor, Jarvis, Georgina Thomas and Heidi Smith. Amber Grahame, Chelsea Walker and Kate Sanders were among the best players for the Bays.Willunga consolidated their spot in the top two with a tough 22-point win at Victor Harbor against Yankalilla. Willunga got off to a fast start as they kicked 4.2 to 0.0 in the opening term to lead by 26 points at quarter time. The final three quarters were very even with the Tigers actually shading the Demons by two points with the game ending with Willunga 8.2 (50) to Yankalilla 4.4 (28). Shae Archbold was a star up forward for Willunga with six goals, giving her 21 for the season so far. For the fourth time in 2021, Katrice Turner was named best for Willunga. Carli Perryman, Kristin Rothwell, Courtney Gutschmidt and Archbold were also named in the best for the Demons. Nari Wright, Jemma Ellis, Charlotte Dolan, Tegan Cross and Jasmine Smith were best for a brave Tigers outfit. Strathalbyn sit just percentage outside the top four following their convincing 75-point victory over Victor Harbor. The Roosters led by 33 points at halftime and kicked a further six goals to zero in the second half to win 12.10 (82) to 1.1 (7). Strathalbyn had seven different goalkickers including Indigo Miller (3), Emily Cozamanis (3) and Tijana Jokic (2). Tyla Millard kicked Victor’s only goal in the first term. Emma Chapman was best on ground for ‘Strath’ and she got good support from Courtney Mesecke, Tessa Grant, Elyse Haylock and Jokic. Reynella maintained top spot on the Southern Football League Women’s (SFLW) ladder after defeating Christies Beach by 80 points during round six action at Bice Oval yesterday. The Wine Flies led by eight points at quarter time, 39 points at halftime and 60 points at the last break before winning 12.8 (80) to 0.0 (0). Emily Woods kicked four goals for Reynella with Georgia Pennifold and Rebecca Denyer chiming in with two goals each. Madi Thwaites, Morgan Blackwell, Ella Besley, Pennifold and Renee Wurfel were best for Reynella while for Christies Beach, Angeligue Dean, Mia Dunn, Neriah Mills, Brooke O’Brien and Monique Hepden were named as their sides best.Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill consolidated second spot on the ladder following their convincing 83-point win at Hackham yesterday. ‘Flaggies’ were inaccurate in the first term as they kicked 1.6 to lead by 12 points at quarter time. Five goals to none in the second quarter saw the Falcons out to a commanding 46-point lead by halftime. A further five goals to none in the second half saw Flagstaff Hill win 11.18 (84) to 0.1 (1). Chloe Meyers, Emma Sjoberg, Emily Erickson and Emily Brockhurst all kicked two goals for the Falcons. Sjoberg, Erickson, Isobel Dyson, Hannah Griffin and Alana Baker were the leading players for the winners while Hannah Crump, Emily Hateley-Watson, Alana Browne, Chrysti Flevill and Courtnie Noble battled hard for Hackham.Cove kept their spot in the top four with a 29-point win over Port Noarlunga at Hallett Cove. McLaren took a big scalp yesterday in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) as they knocked off the previously undefeated Mount Compass by 33 points at McLaren Vale. The home side started well as they kicked the first two goals of the game before Mount Compass hit back in a tight opening term, as the Eagles led by four points at quarter time. After kicking 3.7 in the opening term, McLaren again had plenty of shots at goal in the second term as they kicked an inaccurate 4.8 to lead 7.15 (57) to 6.6 (42) at halftime. Mount Compass were missing prolific full-forward Tom Pinyon but elusive half-forward Ziggy Vitkunas was keeping his side in the game with four goals in the first half. Thomas Harms was on fire up forward for McLaren with five goals of his own. The Eagles kept their foot on the Bulldogs throat as they kicked a further six goals to two in the second half to win 13.16 (94) to 8.13 (61). Harms finished with five goals while Joel Chahla kicked three majors for McLaren. Vitkunas played a lone hand up forward for Mount Compass with five goals. Todd McKay, Chahla, Alex Moyle, Sam Bentley and Daniel Marr were best for McLaren. For Mount Compass, Vitkunas, Peter Hoban, Nick Mott, Nick Brokenshire and Michael Corbett were named as their best players.Willunga moved back to the top of the ladder, but it wasn’t easy, as they hosted bottom side Myponga/Sellicks at Willunga. The Demons won a tight and scrappy affair 8.10 (58) to 7.6 (48). Willunga led by 15 points at halftime but its lead could’ve been far greater as they kicked 3.9 (27) to Myponga/Sellicks 2.0 (12). The Mudlarks played some of their best footy for 2021 as they kicked four goals to three in the third term and turned for home just nine points in arrears. The visitors had plenty of chances in the final term but it was their turn to be inaccurate as they kicked 1.5 while the Demons added 2.0 to win by 10 points. Cam Hutchens kicked two goals for Willunga while Jayden Scott led the way for Myponga/Sellicks with three majors. Brian Fenton, Myles Warmington, Job Colwell, Billy Cook and Jake Standfield were best for Willunga while Daniel Trevena, Jack Sires, Scott Ogilvie, Sam Kennedy and Jake Spinks were best for a brave Mudlarks outfit.Strathalbyn had a very important come-from-behind win over Goolwa/Port Elliot to keep their spot in the top five after eight rounds. It was a low scoring first half with Goolwa/Port Elliot holding a slender six-point lead at halftime. Three goals apiece in the third term saw the Magpies turn for home with a seven-point lead and the home crowd dared to dream of an upset over the more fancied Roosters. The dream turned into a nightmare in the final term as the Roosters roared home with five goals to one to win 11.11 (77) to 8.11 (59). Riley Clamp was the hero again for Strathalbyn with four last-quarter goals in a best on ground performance while Brad Prior kicked three for the Magpies. Joining Clamp in the best players for Strathalbyn were Richard O’Grady, Jacob Wright, Xavier Redden and Lachlan Butler. Best for the Magpies were Daniel Fry, Dale Cuthbert, James Fry, Mckale O’Flaherty and Jesse Bates.Langhorne Creek moved to second spot on the GSFL ladder with a convincing 67-point in the grand final rematch at Encounter Bay. The reigning premier Hawks kept the Bays goalless in the first half as they took a handy 38-point lead to halftime. The Bays made some inroads into the lead in the third quarter as they outscored the Hawks to trail by 30 points at the last change. The ‘Creeks’ put the foot down in the last quarter as they kicked seven goals to one to win 15.9 (99) to 4.8 (32). Caleb Howell kicked five goals for Langhorne Creek and he was ably assisted by Lachlan McGregor, Mitchell Cleggett and Coby Helyar who all kicked three goals. Tyson Neale was the only multiple goal kicker for the Bays with two. Ben Arbon, Jarrad Kellock, Howell, Tom Derham and Curtis Perrey were best for Langhorne Creek. Lachlan Williams, Cohen Pettitt and Callum Tonkin were among the best players for Encounter Bay.Yankalilla won their fourth game of the season following a grinding nine-point win against Victor Harbor at Yankalilla yesterday. Harry Morgan was a star for ‘Yank’ with five goals in a best on ground display. Brok Schubert matched Morgan’s output with five goals of his own for the Kangaroos. Joining Morgan in the best players for the winners was Joel Kay, Lachlan Whittlesea, Finn Betterman and Matthew Wilson. McLaren sent a warning to the Great Southern Football League Women’s (GSFLW) competition as they ended Mount Compass’ undefeated run with a gritty nine-point win at Encounter Bay on Sunday. The game was tight all day with McLaren leading by five points at quarter time before Mount Compass hit the front by four points at halftime. McLaren steadied to kick the only two goals of the second half to win 4.3 (27) to 2.6 (18). Sally Fuller kicked two goals for the Eagles while Linda Shute and Heidi Smith each kicked a goal for the Bulldogs. Caitlin Ross continued her excellent season to be named best for McLaren and she was ably supported by the consistent Layla Rogers, Katie Whish, Emily Rowe and Katrina Munzberg. Mount Compass was best served by Tyler Garrett, Kiara Upitis, Georgina Thomas, Emily Smith and Brooke Boileau. Yankalilla moved up to fourth spot on the GSFLW ladder following a convincing 109-point win against Encounter Bay. The Tigers led by 27 points at quarter time, 51 points at halftime and 81 points at the last change before they won 15.19 (109) to 0.0 (0). Colbie Frankland and Dana Oniszk each kicked four goals for the Tigers. Best players for Yankalilla were Charlotte Dolan, Frankland, Nari Wright, Emily Sowter and Tegan Cross. Chelsea Walker, Kayla Lang and Michelle Lang were best for the Bays.Willunga went top of the ladder with a percentage-boosting 110-point win over Victor Harbor at Goolwa. The final scores were Willunga 15.21 (111) to Victor Harbor 0.1 (1). Kristen Rothwell kicked five goals for the Demons while Patty Parry, Katrice Turner and Jessica Harris all kicked two goals. For the third time in four weeks, Katrice Turner was named as best player for Willunga. Joining her in the best players for the Demons was Courtney Gutschmidt, Parry, Ella Radbone and Lauren Clifton. Maya Overall, Demi Morse, Jaimee Millard, Daisy Blencowe and Tegan Yeomans were best for Victor.Goolwa/Port Elliot kept pace with the top four after accounting for Strathalbyn by 27 points at Goolwa. ‘Strath’ kicked the only goal of the first quarter to lead by five points at quarter time. From quarter time onwards however it was all the Magpies as they kicked five goals to zero to win 5.6 (36) to 1.3 (9). Rachel Searle kicked two goals for the Magpies while Megan Rich was Strathalbyn’s sole goalkicker. Megan Hoad was named best for Goolwa/Port Elliot for the second time in three games and she was well supported by Tracey O’Donnell, Jessica Bailey, Catherine Griffen and Searle. Mount Compass defeated Willunga by 18 points at Mount Compass on Saturday during round seven action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) to move top of the ladder and in the process, ended the unbeaten run of the Demons. It was a much anticipated clash between the two undefeated sides in the GSFL and it didn’t disappoint. Both sides were inaccurate in the first term with Willunga leading by 13 points at the first break. ‘Compass’ hit back in the second quarter to go to the halftime break with a slender two-point lead, before Willunga again took the lead at the last change by five points. Willunga’s lead could easily have been greater but for an inaccurate 3.8 for the quarter. Mount Compass showed their class in the final term as they kicked five goals to one to win 15.10 (100) to 10.22 (82). Cove moved inside the top four on the Southern Football League Women’s (SFLW) ladder after defeating Hackham by 107 points on Sunday during round five action at Hallett Cove. The Cobras led by 29 points at quarter time, 45 points at halftime and 81 points at the last change before winning 15.18 (108) to 0.1 (1). Edith Kosztovits kicked five goals for the Cobras and she was well supported by Felicity Oliver (4) and Alesia Leduff (3). Best players for Cove were Oliver, Kosztovits, Mikala Graham, Renee Ullrich and Dana O’Brien. The consistent Alana Browne was best for Hackham along with Hannah Crump, Courtnie Noble, Stacey Deans and Katelyn Hayes-Phillips.Reynella maintained their undefeated start to the season with a comfortable 103-point victory against Aldinga at Reynella Oval yesterday, The Wine Flies led by 46 points at halftime before kicking a further eight goals to zero in the second half to win 15.13 (103) to 0.0 (0). Dudley United have skipped a game clear on top of the Kangaroo Island Football League (KIFL) ladder following their 37-point win over previously undefeated Wisanger at Penneshaw on Saturday. The clash between the two top sides in the competition lived up to expectations for the first three quarters with Dudley United hanging on to a six-point lead at the last change. Dudley United really turned it on for their home fans in the last quarter as they kicked 8.3 to 3.2 to win a high-scoring affair, 20.12 (132) to 15.5 (95). Kyron Pepper kicked five goals for the Eagles with support from Brodie Howard and Clayton Willson who each kicked four goals. Luke Shurven was a star up forward for Wisanger as he kicked eight goals to take his season tally to 14 from three games. Sam McLeay, Nathan Dickson, Edward Colley, Matthew Houchin and Brent Kirby were named best players for the undefeated Eagles. Wisanger’s best were Shurven with his eight majors, Liam Sampson, Brodee Williams, Dustin Cross and Brok Viney-Obst.Parndana won their second game of 2021 with a convincing 54-point win against Western Districts at Parndana.
