Reigning Southern Football League Women’s (SFLW) premier Cove are back on the winners list following a convincing 82-point win in the grand final rematch over Aldinga during round seven action at Hallett Cove on Sunday. Led by five goals to Rebecca O’Shaughnessy, Cove won 12.10 (82) to Aldinga 0.0 (0). O’Shaughnessy had only kicked one goal for 2020 before Sunday but she is a renowned goalkicker, having kicked 32 majors in 2018 for the Cobras. Aidene Parr and Jaime Norup both kicked two goals each for the Cobras while Lauren Kenny, Lara Ward, Parr, Norup and O’Shaughnessy were named in the best players for Cove. For Aldinga, Jean-Louise Papps continued her consistent season to be named best player for the Sharks and she was ably supported by Kiara Lovett, Jaimi Griffen, Brook Fallon and Alexia Little.Flagstaff Hill secured their finals spot with a big 67-point win over Morphett Vale. The Falcons led by 14 points at quarter time, 31 points at halftime, 58 points at the last change before winning 10.15 (75) to 1.2 (8). Soriah Moon kicked three goals for Flagstaff Hill and Emily Brockhurst kicked two. Kate Dunn was the sole goalkicker for the Emus. Alana Baker, Tamsyn Morriss, Carli Morton, Hannah Griffin and Isobel Dahlen-Flight were named best for the Falcons while Katelyn Wilson, Hannah Armstrong, Brooke O’Brien, Amber Kennedy-Murphy and Ashleigh Carr were best for the Emus.Christies Beach maintained their undefeated 2020 season with another big win, this time by 65 points over Hackham. The Saints are firm premiership favourites having won six games from as many starts with an average winning margin of 37 points. Willunga are through to the Great Southern Football League Women’s (GSFLW) Grand Final following an upset nine point win over undefeated minor premier McLaren at Victor Harbor yesterday. One goal to each team in the first quarter saw McLaren lead by four points at quarter time and they had extended their lead out to nine points by halftime. The third term would prove the difference in the match as Willunga kicked three goals while keeping McLaren scoreless and the Demons went into the last quarter holding a handy 11-point lead. One goal apiece in the final term saw Willunga hold on to win 6.4 (40) to 4.7 (31). Bridie Nye kicked three goals for the Demons while Kimberly Robinson kicked two. Katrice Turner, Ella Radbone, Caitlin Radbone, Nye and Carli Perryman were best for the Demons while for McLaren, Jessica Hutton, Tahlita Buethke and Sally Fuller were amongst the Eagles best players.Reigning premier Strathalbyn are out of the 2020 season as Mount Compass progressed to the Preliminary Final with a grinding four point victory in the first semi-final. In a low scoring game, Strathalbyn led by one point at quarter time, seven points at halftime and four points at the last change. It was all set up for a cracking final term and Mount Compass finished strongly to kick two goals to one in the last quarter and win 4.3 (27) to 3.5 (23). Mykala Walker-Murphy kicked two goals for Mount Compass as did Indigo Miller for Strathalbyn. Reigning premier Gumeracha has all but sewn up second spot and the all important double chance after defeating a gallant Meadows by two points at Gumeracha with just one round to go in the Hills Football League (HFL) Country Division. The home side jumped out to an 11-point lead at quarter time before Meadows bounced back to trail by just four points at halftime. One goal each in the third term saw Gumeracha turn for home still clinging to that four point lead. Meadows hit the front at the 15-minute mark of the final term when Jarad Mellor kicked his third goal but the lead was to be short lived as Gumeracha goaled with just five minutes left and held on to win 8.6 (54) to 7.10 (52). Rob McCard kicked three goals for the home side while Mellor also kicked three for Meadows. Ben Hanna, Danny Leith and Daniel Wood were best for Gumeracha while Luke Smart, Luke Watson and Mathew Beinke were named in Meadows’ best players.Kangarilla won their fourth game of the 2020 HFL campaign with a comprehensive 67-point home win over Macclesfield. Kangies had a handy lead at halftime of 27 points before a nine goals to three second half saw the home side win 14.13 (97) to 4.6 (30). Kangarilla has shown excellent improvement in 2020, winning four games from seven starts compared to just five wins all last season (16 games). Josh Albanese (4), Michael Ross (3), Jamie Grosser (3) and Adrian Albanese (2) were the multiple goal kickers for Kangarilla. Adrian Albanese, Josh Albanese, Ross, Tyler Virgo and Brendan Hillier were best for the ‘Roos. Riley Daykin, Reece Jolly and Jack Clark were among the best players for Maccy.Kersbrook have booked their place in the finals after winning their final game of the minor round against Torrens Valley at Kersbrook Oval. Jonathan Ross kicked six goals (23 for the season) for Kersbrook with Ben Paues kicking four. Ryan Xanthopoulos continued his excellent season as he was named best on ground. He was well supported by Matthew Gardner, Paul James, Ross and Jacob Pitman. Morphett Vale have moved inside the top four in the Southern Football League (SFL) following a crushing 110-point win against Cove in round six action on Saturday at Morphett Vale. A tight first quarter gave no inkling of what was to come as scores were level at the first break. From that moment on however, it was all Morphett Vale as they kicked 20 goals to three to win 22.16 (148) to 6.2 (38). The Emus had 11 different goalkickers with Jack Glazbrook leading the way with four goals while Ben Charlesworth kicked three goals for the Cobras. Better players for the Emus included Braydan Hartwig, David Sampson and Daniel Bode. For the Cobras, Daniel Seirch, Kyle Stoldt and Damian Roach battled hard.Christies Beach consolidated second position on the SFL ladder with a big 99-point win at Port Noarlunga. Christies Beach played a solid first half to take a 26-point lead to halftime before they really put their foot down after the break to kick 15 goals to four and win 23.15 (153) to 8.6 (54). The Saints had nine different goalkickers with Blake Carter kicking eight majors while Daniel Nobes kicked six goals. Nobes now has 36 goals from six games in 2020. Nick Steele kicked three goals for Port Noarlunga and Dylan Williams kicked two. Andrew Bachmann, Josiah Sheppard, Carter, Shane Pettiford and Nobes were best for the Saints while Steele, Aaron Petersen and Steve O’Brien were among the best players for the Cockle Divers.2019 runner-up Noarlunga notched their fourth win on the trot with a convincing 48-point victory at Happy Valley. The Shoes lost their first two games but have not lost since then and have moved up to third spot on the ladder. Happy Valley started well to lead by seven points at quarter time before Noarlunga turned it around to take the lead by seven points themselves at halftime. Nine goals to two in the second half saw Noarlunga win 15.10 (100) to 7.10 (52). Vic Robertson kicked five goals for the Shoes and Harry Davenport kicked three for the Vikings. Gumeracha has consolidated second spot on the ladder with two rounds to go in the Hills Football League (HFL) Country Division after a 15-point win at home over an ever-improving Kangarilla in round seven action on Saturday. Gumeracha held a nine point lead at quarter time and extended that to a very handy 24 points by halftime. Kangarilla fought back in the ‘premiership quarter’ to reduce the margin to a manageable 13 points at the last change. Three goals each in the final quarter saw the reigning premiers run out 10.9 (69) to 7.12 (54) winners. Rob McCard kicked three goals for Gumeracha while Josh Albanese kicked two for Kangarilla. Cameron Redden, McCard and Braden Hutt were best for the Magpies while for Kangarilla, Brendan Hillier, Michael Ross and Tyler Virgo were their best players.After a slow start to the season, perennial powerhouse Kersbrook are starting to get their game going and have moved to fourth spot on the HFL ladder after defeating Meadows by 76 points on Saturday at Kersbrook. Meadows made the long trek north with some pretty good form recently and it looked like that was going to continue as the visitors led by a point at quarter time. From that moment on it was all Kersbrook as they kicked 15 goals to two in the final three quarters to win 18.10 (118) to 5.12 (42). Brad Inglis dominated up forward to kick his second ‘bag’ of seven goals in a row. He was ably supported by Jonathon Ross who kicked four goals. Ryan Shaw was the only multiple goalkicker for Meadows as he slotted three majors. Ironbank-Cherry Gardens continued on their merry way to record a seventh consecutive victory for 2020, this time by 94 points against Torrens Valley at Mt Torrens. The final scores were 16.12 (108) to 2.2 (14). Josh Vandermeer continued his excellent season for the Thunderers kicking eight goals and moving to the top of the HFL Country Division goal kicking list with 37 majors. Jeremy Johncock chimed in with three goals to take his tally to 30 goals for the season. Matthew Raitt was named best for the Thunderers for the third time this season while Phillip Wilhelm was best for the Lions.Birdwood are third on the ladder after a 68-point victory over Macclesfield and are looking good for finals in 2020 with two rounds remaining. It was an entertaining first half with 15 goals scored and Birdwood taking a 17-point lead at halftime. It was all Roosters in the second half as they kicked 10 goals to three to win 19.11 (125) to 9.3 (57). Christian Elliott kicked seven goals for Birdwood to be best on ground and he received good support up forward from Josh Sykes who snagged six goals. Reynella led by 30 points at quarter time, 52 points at halftime, 70 points at three quarter time before winning 14.7 (91) to 0.1 (1). The Wine Flies had eight different goalkickers including Madison Short and Rebecca Slegers who each kicked three goals. Tyler Davies, Kristy Jenkinson, Vanessa Graham, Short and Emma McManus were named in the best players for Reynella. Nikki Parker, Belinda Macrow, Kirsty Watson, Rachel Cole and Emily Cooper battled hard for the Hawks.Flagstaff Hill moved up to third on the ladder after defeating Aldinga by 115 points on Sunday. The Falcons led by 71 points at halftime before eventually winning 16.19 (115) to 0.0 (0). Soriah Moon kicked five goals in a best on ground performance for Flagstaff Hill. Encounter Bay pulled off one of the upsets of the season with a 14-point win at home over the previously undefeated McLaren Eagles in round six action of the Great Southern Football League (GSFL). The win moves the Bays up to fourth position while McLaren remain in second spot ahead of a huge clash at Langhorne Creek this Saturday. McLaren held an eight-point lead at halftime before Encounter Bay hit the front by three points turning for home after a three goal to two third quarter. The home side could smell an upset and a further three goals to one in the final term saw the Bays win 10.13 (73) to 8.11 (59). Tyson Neale kicked six goals for Encounter Bay while James Grimley kicked four goals for the Eagles. Callum Tonkin, Thomas Neville, Hamish Tonkin, Wade Sweetman and Tyler Baldock were best for Encounter Bay while for McLaren, Thomas Fenoughty, Grimley and Luke Goodieson were among their best players.After three consecutive losses, Willunga has hit back in emphatic fashion with a crushing 73-point victory over Yankalilla. The win was set up with a dominant display from the Demons in the first half as they led 11.2 (68) to 2.5 (17) at the long break. A further seven goals to three in the second half saw Willunga win 18.4 (112) to 5.9 (39). Willunga had nine different goalkickers including Brad Haskett and Daniel Bass who each slotted four majors. It was a different story for the Tigers with just Jed Durdin kicking multiple goals with two. Bass, Sean Beath, Haskett, Marcus Burdett and Danny Irvine were the best players for the Demons while Luke Durdin, Ethan Moore and Nick Liddle were among the best for a disappointing Tigers outfit.Mount Compass recorded a fourth straight victory to consolidate third position on the GSFL ladder following a comprehensive 14.21 (105) to 6.3 (39) victory at Strathalbyn. The game was effectively over at halftime as the Bulldogs had a 45-point lead and it could’ve been more except for them kicking an inaccurate 8.10 (58) to 2.1 (13). Mount Compass remained inaccurate in the second half adding a further 6.11 to 4.2 to win by 66 points. Shane Heatley was the leading goalkicker on the ground with four goals for Mount Compass while Marc Elliott and Austin McFarlane each kicked two goals for Strathalbyn. Josh Davis, Adam Hunter, Tomas Vitkunas, Scott Pittaway and Heatley were best for an improving Bulldogs lineup. Mark Tucker, Xavier Redden and McFarlane were named in the best players for the Roosters.Goolwa/Port Elliot won their first game of the season with an 11-point win over winless Victor Harbor at Goolwa. After a tight opening term saw the Magpies lead by just six points, the home side pushed ahead further and by the last change, Goolwa/Port Elliot led by 21 points and the home crowd was getting excited about a possible first win for new coach Todd Miles and his Magpies. To their credit the Victor Harbor lads tried hard in the last term to overcome the deficit by kicking three goals to one before going down 9.8 (62) to 8.3 (51). Brock Godwin-Knott continued his good recent form for the Magpies kicking three goals (10 in the past three games) while Daniel Fry kicked two. Oscar Barnett, Godwin-Knott, Daniel Fry, James Fry and Damien Nangle were best for a jubilant Magpies outfit while Dylan Kleining, Nathan McCarthy and Harrison Martin battled hard for the brave ‘Roos.Reigning premier Langhorne Creek moved a game clear on top of the ladder following a 40-point win at Myponga. It was an entertaining first half as the home side took it up to the premiership favourites and only trailed by 12 points at halftime. The Hawks flexed their muscles after the long break as they kicked seven goals to three to pull away and win 14.8 (92) to 8.4 (52). Coby Helyar kicked four goals for the Hawks and now has 20 for the season to lead the GSFL goal kicking tally. Matt Dominish also hit the scoreboard for Langhorne Creek with three majors. Anthony Kempster and Brett Irons kicked two goals each for the Mudlarks. Helyar was named best for Langhorne Creek and he was well supported by James Sellar, Troy Blackwell, Jarrod Kellock and Shannon Jones. Willunga grabbed the all-important double chance with a tough six-point win over reigning premier Strathalbyn during the final minor round of the Great Southern Football League Women’s (GSFLW) competition yesterday. Cleo Guilfoyle kicked the only goal of the match in the first quarter as Willunga took a seven-point lead to the first change. With the defensive units of both sides on top throughout the game, it proved a match winning lead as Willunga held on for a 1.4 (10) to 0.4 (4) victory. Ella Radbone, Katrice Turner and Carli Perryman were best for the Demons while Tessa Grant, Katie Ehlers and Emma Chapman were best for the Roosters.McLaren completed an undefeated minor round with a convincing 39-point over Goolwa/Port Elliot. McLaren led by 22 points at halftime before kicking a further three goals in the second half to win 6.8 (44) to 0.5 (5). The Eagles have put together a dominant season so far with seven wins and an average winning margin of 47 points. Sally Fuller kicked two goals in a best on ground display for McLaren and she was joined in the best players by Alexandra Bentley, Emma Goldsmith, Layla Rogers and Katrina Munzberg. Kaya Angus, Renee Moon and Lacey Cuthbert were among the best for the Magpies.Mount Compass tuned up for their finals assault with a 42-point win over Encounter Bay at Strathalbyn. Compass dominated the first half to lead by 29 points at the long break. Encounter Bay hit back in the third term to kick two goals to one and trailed by 23 points at the final change. Mount Compass steadied to kick four goals to one in the final stanza to record a 9.8 (62) to 3.2 (20) win. Kelly Haverty kicked five goals for the Bulldogs while Demi Sharp kicked four in a best on ground performance. Sharp was joined in the Bulldogs best players by Olivia Bendt, Amy Taylor, Taylah Eastwood and Haverty. The Falcons got away to a good start on their home deck as they took a handy 15-point lead into the halftime break. A further two goals in the third term saw Flaggies out to a match-winning 27-point lead. Cove kicked the only goal of the final quarter as Flagstaff Hill ran out winners 5.8 (38) to 2.1 (13). Port Noarlunga have moved inside the top four in the Southern Football League (SFL) following a comfortable 40-point win against Cove in round five action on Saturday at Port Noarlunga. The Cockle Divers played an excellent first half to lead by 40 points at the long break. To their credit, Cove dug deep to break even in the second half as Port Noarlunga won 15.17 (107) to Cove 10.7 (67). Ian Milera kicked four goals for Port Noarlunga and now has 20 majors for the season while Ashley Baxter chipped in with three goals. Bradley Young kicked four goals for the Cobras. Dylan Williams continued his good season for the Cockle Divers with a best on ground performance while Nikolas Flynn was named best for the Cobras.Christies Beach consolidated second position on the SFL ladder with a convincing 55-point win at home against Happy Valley. The Saints set the win up with a dominant first half which saw them take a 50-point lead into halftime. Both sides were inaccurate and managed just three goals each in the second half as Christies won 14.16 (100) to 5.15 (45) for their fourth victory of 2020. Daniel Nobes kicked four goals for the winners and now has 30 for the season after just five games. Henry Kerrison was the only multiple goalkicker for the Vikings with two.Noarlunga ground out a 23-point victory at Reynella to post their third win in a row and move up to third spot on the ladder. The margin grew to 42 points at halftime and it could have really blown out in the second half but the Falcons could only manage an inaccurate 3.14 to 3.5 after halftime to eventually win 11.23 (89) to 5.8 (38). Reigning premier Strathalbyn have moved up to second spot on the Great Southern Football League Women’s (GSFLW) ladder with a tough four-point win against fellow finals aspirant Mount Compass. Mount Compass kicked the only two goals of the first half to take a handy nine-point lead at the long break. Strathalbyn then kicked the only two goals of the third term to lead by five points at three quarter time. Despite not scoring in the final term, the Roosters hung on to win 2.7 (19) to 2.3 (15). Emogen Johnson was named best for the Roosters for the third time this season. She was joined in the best players by Tessa Grant, Roseanna Shaw, Lisa-Jane Millard and Courtney Mesecke. Stacey Dale, Brooke Boileau, Taylah Eastwood, Chloe Boileau and Demi Sharp were named best for Mount Compass.Willunga are up to third after a seven-point victory against a wasteful Goolwa/Port Elliot outfit. Goolwa/Port Elliot had 12 scoring shots to four but could only manage 1.11 (17) to Willunga’s 4.0 (24). The Magpies led by three points at quarter time before Willunga led by two points at halftime and just a solitary point at the last change. Willunga kicked two goals straight in the final term while the Magpies could only manage six behinds. Kimberly Robinson kicked two goals for the Demons while Caitlin Radbone, Katrice Turner, Ella Radbone, Robinson and Jodie Hunt were the best players for Willunga. Encounter Bay won their second game of 2020 with a 2.5 (17) to 2.2 (14) victory over Yankalilla.Yankalilla kicked the only goal of the first half to lead by just two points at halftime. Encounter Bay got their first goal in the third term to turn for home with a three-point advantage. A goal apiece in the last quarter saw the Bays hold on to win by three points. Yankalilla has moved up to fourth spot on the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) ladder after a thrilling two-point win at home against Encounter Bay in round five action. There was no more than a five-point margin at any of the breaks before Yankalilla prevailed 9.11 (65) to 9,9 (63). It was a fitting way for the Tigers to celebrate the 200th game for their captain Matt Wilson. Playing-coach Lindsay Thomas kicked three goals for Yankalilla while Elijah Horrocks also kicked three goals for Encounter Bay. Joel Kay, Chris Clark, Nick Liddle, Xavier Gotch and Ethan Moore were best for Yankalilla. Braedon Renshaw, Horrocks, Fraser Tonkin, Callum Tonkin and Cory Gamble were named best for the Bays.Mount Compass won their third game in a row to move to third spot on the ladder following a convincing 21.8 (134) to 7.7 (49) win over Goolwa/Port Elliot. The opening term was a tight affair with Compass taking a five-point lead at the first break. From that point on it was all the Bulldogs as they kicked 16 goals to three on their home deck to win by 85 points. Mount Compass had 11 different goalkickers with Noarlunga recruit Nick Mott kicking five. Mott has kicked 11 majors in his first two games for the Bulldogs. Brock Godwin-Knott was the only multiple goalkicker for the Magpies with three majors. Peter Hoban was best on ground for the home side and he was ably supported by Sam Haniford, Adam Hunter, Scott Pittaway and Mott. Ethan Cinc, Godwin-Knott, Trent Griffen, James Fry and Daniel Fry were named best for the Magpies.Myponga-Sellicks have won their first game for 2020 after a tight 11-pont win at Victor Harbor. The Mudlarks led by 10 points at quarter time, 11 at halftime, 17 at three quarter time before winning 8.7 (55) to 6.8 (44). It’s been a tough season so far for both clubs with Victor yet to taste success. Sam Kennedy kicked two goals in a best on ground performance for Myponga-Sellicks. Tyler Harman and Brodie Williams also kicked two for the Mudlarks. Sam Basham kicked four goals for Victor and now has 13 goals for the season.Langhorne Creek remained undefeated after a 30-point win in the grand final rematch against Willunga at Langhorne Creek. It was a tight and low scoring affair with Willunga leading by a point at quarter time. WIllunga only managed a solitary goal after quarter time as the reigning premier took a stranglehold on the match. The Hawks led by 17 points at halftime, 19 points at the last change before winning 9.4 (58) to 4.4 (28). Jarrod Kellock and Coby Helyar kicked two goals each for the Hawks while Matthew Dominish was named best player for the second week in a row. Kane Milford, Brett Miegel and Billy Cook were amongst the best players for the Demons.McLaren are also undefeated after five rounds with a convincing, albeit inaccurate, 71-point victory at home over Strathalbyn. The Eagles dominated from the start, kicking six goals to two in the opening term to take a 28-point lead into quarter time. Strathalbyn held their own in the second quarter, thanks in part to McLaren kicking 2.6, and the margin was still 28 points at the long break. McLaren flexed their muscles in the third term to kick 7.5 to 0.1 and take an unassailable 74-point lead into the final term before winning 17.23 (125) to 8.6 (54). Ironbank-Cherry Gardens has held on to win a thriller against Meadows in round six action of the Hills Football League (HFL) Country Division on Saturday. Ironbank-Cherry Gardens made the trip to Meadows as hot favourites but the hosts took it up to them for the whole game. After a tight opening quarter saw the visitors take a two-point lead into the first break, a couple of goals to the Bulldogs through Andrew Coombe saw them hit the front early in the second term. The Thunderers hit back hard with three quick goals to take a nine-point lead at halftime. The third quarter was an even affair with each team kicking three goals and the game was set up for a thrilling finish as Ironbank-Cherry Gardens held on to their nine-point advantage with a quarter to go. The Thunderers skipped away in the final term to lead by 20 points but once again Meadows would not be denied as they attacked strongly with the last two goals of the contest before falling six points short. The final scores were Ironbank-Cherry Gardens 13.11 (89) to Meadows 12.11 (89). Josh Vandermeer kicked three goals for the winners while Coombe and Jacob Comley also kicked three for Meadows. Reigning premier Gumeracha consolidated second spot on the HFL ladder with a comfortable 82-point victory at Macclesfield. The opening quarter was a real arm wrestle with only two goals scored as Gumeracha led by just three points at quarter time. The Magpies took control of the contest in the second term, kicking four goals to one, to lead by 24 points at halftime. The third quarter was all Gumeracha as they kicked eight goals to zero before eventually winning 15.13 (103) to 3.3 (21). Scott Mumford kicked seven goals in a best on ground performance. Mumford now has 23 majors for the season. Kyle Harding was the only multiple goalkicker for Maccy with two while Jesse McCarthy was named best player for the Blood ‘n’ Tars.Birdwood moved up to third spot on the ladder with a convincing 70-point victory over the struggling Torrens Valley at Mount Torrens. The Roosters led by 25 points at quarter time, 35 at halftime, 63 points at three quarter time before winning 9.18 (72) to 0.2 (2). Josh Sykes kicked three goals for Birdwood while Scott Sullivan and Jed Russell slotted two majors each. Hayden Wallis was named best on ground for the Roosters while Dylan Rowe was best for Torrens Valley.Kersbrook are back in the winners circle following a convincing 55-point win against Bridgewater-Callington at Bridgewater Oval. Kersbrook set the game up with a powerful first half which saw them lead by 34 points. A further six goals to three in the second half saw the Brookers win 15.8 (98) to 6.7 (43). In just his second game for the season, Brad Inglis kicked seven goals for Kersbrook.
