Encounter Bay set up intriguing GSFL grand final against Langhorne Creek
Encounter Bay set up intriguing GSFL grand final against Langhorne Creek

28 September 2020, 2:30 AM

Encounter Bay will face off with reigning premier Langhorne Creek on Saturday in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) grand final after defeating Willunga by 40 points in the preliminary final at Victor Harbor on Saturday. Langhorne Creek will be gunning for a third consecutive ‘A’ grade flag while Encounter Bay last won in 2015. It was an even first quarter on Saturday with each side kicking three goals and Willunga taking a three point lead into quarter time. In the second term, the Bays continued their perfect record in front of goal as they pushed ahead to lead by eight points at halftime, 6.0 (36) to 4.4 (28). It was anyone’s game at halftime but the third quarter, as it so often does, proved crucial as Encounter Bay kicked four goals to one and took a very handy 28-point lead to three quarter time. Willunga had the aid of the breeze in the last quarter so there was still some hope but Encounter Bay snuffed out any chance the Demons had as they slammed on another five goals to two in the final stanza to win 15.2 (92) to 7.10 (52). The sides had the same amount of scoring shots but the Bays accuracy proved the difference. Tyson Neale kicked five goals for the victors and Nick Marshall kicked three. Mitch Portlock and Braden Altus each kicked two goals for Willunga. James Bradford, Callum Tonkin, Wade Sweetman, Neale and Hamish Tonkin were named in the best players for Encounter Bay while for Willunga, their best were James Collier, Lachlan Scott, Nick Scanlan, Brett Miegel and Jake Standfield. It’s all set up for a fantastic clash in the 'A' grade grand final at Langhorne Creek on Saturday and hopefully we get a similar match to when these two sides met in the second semi-final when Langhorne Creek prevailed by a point. Flagstaff Hill could smell victory and an incredible five consecutive titles and they put the game well and truly to bed in the third quarter as they kicked four goals to one and turned for home with an unassailable 73-point lead. Noarlunga are through to their second grand final in a row following a 15-point win over Christies Beach in the Southern Football League (SFL) preliminary final on Saturday. The Shoes made a slow start to the season after dropping their opening two games but they’ve turned their form around as they head into a grand final rematch with the imposing Flagstaff Hill lineup. Noarlunga led at every change by seven points at quarter time, six points at halftime and 13 points at the last change before winning 13.10 (88) to 11.7 (73). Ironbank-Cherry Gardens complete undefeated season to win Hills Football League flag

20 September 2020, 11:00 PM

Ironbank-Cherry Gardens won their second premiership in three years in the Hills Football League (HFL) Country Division following a come-from-behind 39-point win over Birdwood at Kersbrook Oval on Saturday. The Thunderers had gone through the season undefeated but things looked a bit grim at halftime as Birdwood held a 20 point lead and had all the momentum heading into the second half after kicking six goals to four in the second term. The Roosters had been a real surprise packet of the 2020 season and it appeared they were on the verge of a huge upset. The third quarter proved crucial in the outcome of the match as Ironbank-Cherry Gardens piled on the pressure to kick 4.6 to no score and take a 10-point lead into the final term. Birdwood were still in the game but the Thunderers were on a roll and couldn’t be contained as they piled on five goals to one in the final term to win 14.18 (102) to 9.9 (63). Lachlan Keeley played his best game of the season to be best on ground for the Thunderers and he was well supported by Josh Rosman, Todd Pfeiffer, Jeremy Johncock and Levi Grigg. Jack Ince, Jed Russell, Scott Sullivan, Steven Peter and Christian Elliott were best for the Roosters. Ironbank-Cherry Gardens had many avenues to goal with Josh Vandermeer and Grigg kicking three goals each. Vandermeer completed an excellent first season in the HFL with 51 goals from just 10 games. Elliott kicked three goals for the Roosters giving him 34 for the season. In other grades, Bridgewater-Callington won their third ‘B’ grade premiership in four years with a 35-point win over Birdwood, Meadows junior colts won back-to-back flags after defeating Ironbank-Cherry Gardens by 16 points while Birdwood won the mini colts grand final by 11 points against Mount Barker. So the 2020 season has been completed under what can only be described as unusual and difficult conditions. To manage eight games plus finals was as much as anyone could’ve asked for and great credit should be given to all clubs and their tireless volunteers for making it happen.

Ironbank-Cherry Gardens are through to their third grand final in four years in the Hills Football League (HFL) Country Division following a dominant 93-point preliminary final demolition of reigning premier Gumeracha at Macclesfield Oval on Saturday. After finishing on top of the ladder, Ironbank-Cherry Gardens enjoyed the week off while Gumeracha lost their semi-final to Birdwood to set up this clash between the previous two years’ premiership clubs. Ironbank-Cherry Gardens held a slender six point lead at quarter time after kicking 2.7 (19) to 2.1 (13). The second quarter was all Thunderers as they kicked 6.6 to 1.0 to take a commanding 42-point lead into halftime. Both these sides missed out on finals action in 2019 so they’ve shown massive improvement in this truncated 2020 season. It was a very scrappy first term with no goals scored and Kangarilla leading 0.6 to 0.1 at the first change. Birdwood came out firing in the second quarter to kick seven goals to two to take a 26-point lead into halftime.
