Stallions back in the top four in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association
Stallions back in the top four in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association

11 November 2020, 10:00 PM

Strathalbyn moved back inside the top-four on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder with a six-wicket win over Woodside at Strathalbyn Oval. The Stallions have been inconsistent this season with their form line reading WLWLW through the first five rounds. On Saturday they put in an excellent performance to bowl Woodside out for 137 in the 44th over after the Warriors had got off to an excellent start through opening pair Tommy Baldock and Dave Wescombe. The openers put on 50 runs before the in-form Baldock was dismissed for 29. Wescombe carried on to make 73 from 92 balls (6 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s), his highest score of the season. Sam Pullen (11) was the only other Woodside batsman to reach double figures as the Warriors lost their last six wickets for 27 runs. Brayden Gaiter (3/14), Mark Abbott (3/28) and Zach Reekie (2/28) took the bowling honours for Strathalbyn. The run chase started badly for the Stallions with both openers dismissed and the score sitting at 2/13. Veteran Steve Schofield and skipper Mark Abbott came together to steady the ship with an 88-run third wicket stand before Schofield was dismissed for 40 (93 balls). Abbott continued on to make his highest score of the season with an undefeated 57 (91 balls) to get his side over the line in the 44th over. Four Woodside bowlers took wickets with Steve Ball (1/11 off nine overs) and Shane Collins (1/14 off eight overs) bowling excellent spells.Hahndorf won their second game of the year with a comfortable five-wicket win over Lobethal at Hahndorf Oval. The Tigers batted first and reliable opening pair, Ben Matthews and Mitch Weeks, got them off to a good start with a 72-run opening stand before Weeks was dismissed for 22 (36 balls). Matthews went on to top score with 46 from 85 balls (5 x 4’s), his highest score of 2020/21. Unfortunately the rest of the batsmen didn’t contribute much with only Matt Martin (18) and Matt Jenkin (11) making it to double figures. The Magpies strong bowling attack shared the wickets around with Benny Montgomerie (3/18), skipper Ryan Trafford-Walker (3/30), Shaun Tait (2/23) and Michael Shanahan (2/34) doing all the damage. In the run chase, Montgomerie continued his good day for Hahndorf as he made the third ‘A’ grade half century of his career with a top-scoring 54. Graydon Brand (27) and Greg Hassold (16) made handy contributions as the winning runs were knocked off in the 35th over. Will Zadow (2/17) and Cam Winen (2/33) were the pick of the Lobethal bowlers.Nairne have hit form with three consecutive wins to leapfrog their way into second spot on the AEHCA ladder. On Saturday they hosted Mount Barker and after winning the toss and batting, the Razorbacks were in deep trouble at 5/40. Kookaburras vice-captain Simon Turk took four of those wickets en-route to his best figures for Mount Barker of 4/29 (9). A rescue job was needed and Richard Boscence (22) and Mitch Hein set about just that with a 53-run sixth wicket union. Once Boscence was dismissed, Mitch Hein was joined by brother Matt (14) in another excellent partnership, this time worth 60 runs for the seventh wicket before Mitch was dismissed for a career-best 62. Chad Harrop (26 not out) and Brodie Clarke (11 not out) then put on an undefeated 38-run stand for the ninth wicket to lift the Razorbacks to 8/197 from their 45 overs. A total scarcely believable after the start they had. The Kookaburras were brave in their run chase as Chris Paterson and Turk added 66 runs for the third wicket as Mount Barker got themselves to 2/106. Unfortunately once Turk was dismissed for 24 (25 balls) it was all left up to Paterson as the run chase faltered, ultimately ending 36 runs short at 8/161. Paterson went on to make 95 from 141 balls (5 x 4’s, 5 x 6’s), his second half century in a row after making 89 last week against Bremer/Callington. Matt Hein snared 3/45 (7) with Clarke (2/13) and Harrop (2/31) adding good support.Langhorne Creek continued their unbeaten start to the season with a huge 155-run victory over Wistow at the Creek. Wistow lost the toss and started well in the field as the Tigers were soon in trouble at 2/32 with Lachlan Elsworthy (2/57) claiming both wickets. That was pretty much the end of the good news for the Echidnas as Daniel Kropp and Ben Warren added 128 runs for the third wicket to take the game away. Warren smashed his way to 85 from just 62 balls (12 x 4’s, 1 x 6) while Kropp made his highest ‘A’ grade score with 67 from 64 balls (9 x 4’s, 1 x 6). The Echidnas hit back with four quick wickets before Troy Blackwell (40 not out) and Jacob Tonkin (32) lifted Langhorne Creek to a total of all out 264 (44.4). Josh Fidler (2/44) joined Elsworthy with two wickets for Wistow. The visitors could only muster 109 in reply as they were bowled out in the 36th over. Lachlan Elsworthy top scored for Wistow with 35. Blackwell’s good day continued as he snared 4/25 (8.3) and he was well supported by Brodie O’Dea with 3/23 (9).        Bremer/Callington had the bye.Ladder (after round 5)Langhorne Creek 20, Nairne 12, Lobethal 12, Strathalbyn 12, Woodside 8, Hahndorf 8, Bremer/Callington 4, Mount Barker 4, Wistow 0.Round 6 fixtures (home team named first)Bremer/Callington v StrathalbynWistow v HahndorfMount Barker v Langhorne CreekWoodside v NairneLobethal has the bye

Flagstaff Hill go top of the Hills Cricket Association ladder
Flagstaff Hill go top of the Hills Cricket Association ladder

11 November 2020, 1:30 AM

Flagstaff Hill has taken over on top of the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ladder with their third win of the season, this time by seven wickets over Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Flagstaff Hill. SCIB won the toss and batted first and that was pretty much where the good news ended for the visitors as they were rolled for just 43 in the 28th over. Veteran Andy Adams (13) was the only batsman to make double figures. Playing his first ‘A’ grade game for the Falcons after moving from Kangarilla this season, Lenny Berkefeld was the chief destroyer with the amazing figures of 5/4 from six overs! James Patterson (2/7) and Jack Walton (2/14) were the other multiple wicket takers. Patterson has taken nine wickets at an average of 7.89 so far in 2020/21 to be equal top of the HCA wicket takers list this season. Flagstaff Hill made the runs in just 11 overs as they finished on 3/44. Ollie Styles top scored with 19 while Matt Emes made 15 not out. Danny Coleman held his head high for Scott Creek Ironbank with 3/4 from three overs. Meadows moved back inside the top-four on the HCA ladder following a tight three-wicket win over Mount Lofty at Heathfield Oval. Mount Lofty batted first and got off to a good start with the returning Josh Healey (27) and James Kittel-Neill (39) adding 41 runs for the first wicket. Once Healey and Kittel-Neill were dismissed, the Redcaps fell to 4/82 before Aaron Smith and Adam Carthew came together to put on 77 for the fifth wicket. Smith went on to top score with 48 (65 balls) while Carthew continued his good recent form to make 38 (64 balls). The home side ended up with a competitive total of 7/171 from their 40 overs. Four Meadows bowlers got wickets with Cal Blackwell (3/30) the standout. After losing Luke Tonkin (9) early, Rohan Reid joined brother Haydn and the experienced duo added 42 runs for the second wicket before Haydn was dismissed for 21. Wickets fell at regular intervals after that and at 7/151, it was anyone’s game as teenager Oscar Tydeman (10 not out) joined his skipper Rohan Reid. It was a cricketing case of ‘the master and the apprentice’ as the pair pushed the Bulldogs to victory with 11 balls to spare after an undefeated 22-run stand for the eighth wicket. Reid finished with a match-winning 86 not out from 96 balls (8 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). “It was a great game of Cricket,” said Meadows skipper Rohan Reid. “The game ebbed and flowed and Mount Lofty took advantage of us dropping a number of catches. We managed to peg them back in the end through some tight bowling from Cal, Max, Chad & Kris to keep them to 171. With the bat we continue to give away some cheap wickets but we managed to get the win in the end and we also had some luck with a few dropped catches.”Kangarilla pulled off a sensational five-run win over previously undefeated Aldgate at Kangarilla Oval to move up to third spot on the ladder. Aldgate appeared to be cruising to victory at 2/70 chasing Kangarilla’s total of 8/121 before a collapse of 8/46 saw the Gaters bowled out for 116 in the 40th over. Earlier Kangarilla were also in a strong position at 3/98 before their innings stalled in the latter overs as Aldgate restricted their run scoring. The key partnership for Kangies was between Matthew Bertelsmeier (48 from 91 balls) and teenager Lachlan Knight (32 from 69 balls). This pair came together at 3/37 and put on 61 for the fourth wicket. Jack Woollard (3/24) and Matty Hansen (2/22) were the multiple wicket takers for Aldgate while skipper Jake Turnbull was very economical with 1/8 from his eight overs. Mitch Thomas (25) continued his good early season form and with Liam Winskill (18) and the returning Frank Clements (17) adding 34 for the third wicket, all seemed rosy for Aldgate. The game was turned on its head as Kangarilla skipper Che Martinsen bowled an inspired spell to snare 3/7 from his eight overs while Jack Evans took 3/34 (7.4). Steve Featherstone proved very hard to get away through the middle of the innings as he took 1/8 (8). Turnbull tried to lift his side over the line with 27 not out from 32 balls but it was to no avail as the home side won their second game of the season. “I was very excited to see both Bertelsmeier and Knight get some runs, especially Knight who at 17 years of age batted beyond his years,” said Martinsen. “We started off our bowling innings a little inconsistently but we managed to take a few wickets. After drinks we knew that the next five to 10 overs would be key. ‘Feathers’ bowled eight straight overs and I bowled six straight and we took some key wickets and didn’t go for many runs. We needed that win to keep us in touch with the top teams.”Stirling won their second game in a row after defeating Uraidla by five wickets at Stirling Oval. Uraidla batted first and really struggled against a disciplined Eagles attack. Teenager Mason Pitt (10) was the only Demons batsman to make double figures as the visitors were rolled for just 63 in the 40th over. Five Stirling bowlers took wickets with Kosta Sinodinos returning the amazing figures of 3/3 from his eight overs! He was ably supported by Pete Fryer (2/6) and the returning Chris Shaw (2/8). It appeared to be an easy proposition for the home sided but at 5/32, Uraidla had the scent of an incredible victory in their nostrils. The experienced Fryer was the key to the Eagles and along with Jacob Kemp (7 not out), they got their side over the line to win by five wickets in the 22nd over. Fryer went on to make 24 not out from 47 balls (2 x 4’s). Fryer has batted on four occasions this season and is yet to be dismissed while making 70 runs. For Uraidla, Simon Parker (3/20) and teenager George Bond (2/18) took all five wickets to fall.Ladder (after round 4)Flagstaff Hill 18, Aldgate 18, Kangarilla 12, Meadows 12, Mount Lofty 12, Stirling 12, Uraidla 12, Scott Creek Ironbank 0.Round 5 fixtures (home team named first)Kangarilla v MeadowsStirling v AldgateMount Lofty v Scott Creek IronbankUraidla v Flagstaff Hill

Stingrays Women undefeated after three rounds of SACA T-20 competition

10 November 2020, 7:30 PM

Southern District Women’s first grade had a 15-run win over West Torrens to stay undefeated after three rounds of the SACA Women’s T20 competition. On Sunday the Stingrays hosted West Torrens at Bice Oval and posted a competitive score of 6/123 from their 20 overs. The innings was set up by a 38-run third wicket partnership between Ella Wilson and Sheridan Howell (17). Wilson continued on to top score with 32 from 32 balls. A handy undefeated 30-run seventh-wicket partnership between Hannah Armstrong (16 not out) and Amy Peterson (9 not out) lifted the Stingrays to their final total. West Torrens got off to a good start to reach 1/50 as Angela Treloar (39) was on fire for the Eagles. The home side fought back to take the next seven wickets for 55 runs with the West Torrens innings finishing at 8/108, 15 runs short. Five Stingrays bowlers took wickets with Gemma Kennedy snaring 3/23 (3) to put the reigning premier on top of the ladder. The second grade were also at Bice Oval in the second game of the double header taking on Sturt. It was a game dominated by the bowlers with the home side coming out on top by 10 runs. Southern District batted first and were bowled out in just the 15th over for 56. Caitlin Seccafien did well to carry her bat for 18 not out (48 balls) while Annabelle Yelland added some support at the end of the innings with 11 (17 balls). The Stingrays needed quick wickets and that’s just what they got with Caitlin Perkins (2/2) getting the first two wickets to leave Sturt reeling at 2/1. The Blues could never get into the run chase as they finished on 7/46 from their 20 overs. Four Stingrays bowlers took wickets with Donna Clark (2/10) joining Perkins as a multiple wicket taker.                                                                                                                 Next Sunday the first grade take on Northern Districts (10.30am) at Salisbury Oval while the second grade face Adelaide University at Park 12 (No. 1) from 1.00pm.

Goolwa win their first game of the season with a fighting win over Port Elliot in the GSCA
Goolwa win their first game of the season with a fighting win over Port Elliot in the GSCA

10 November 2020, 6:00 AM

Goolwa pulled off an excellent come-from-behind victory over local rival Port Elliot during the second round of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at Goolwa Oval on Saturday. The Magpies were in deep trouble at 4/59 as they chased down Port Elliot’s competitive total of 6/159 from their 40 overs. Former Port Elliot skipper Jesse Consalvo, who returned to Goolwa this season, then played a match-winning hand of 73 not out to get the Magpies over the line by two wickets in the 38th over. Earlier in the day, Port Elliot won the toss and batted first with young all-rounder Colby Whitbourne playing a standout innings of 85 from 96 balls (6 x 4’s & 6 x 6’s). Whitbourne has started 2020/21 well with 117 runs from two innings. Whitbourne was well supported by Hayden Gordge who struck 24 not out from 29 balls. Jayden Crees was the pick of the bowlers for Goolwa taking 2/16 (8). Jake Ashton-Place also snared a couple of wickets to finish with 2/33 (8). Goolwa’s reply got off to a bad start as they slumped to 3/38 with Ben Maier, back from a stint with Western Youth Centre in the Adelaide & Suburban Cricket Association, the chief destroyer taking 3/21 from six overs. When Magpies all-rounder Andy Evans (10), in his 200th game, was dismissed by Liam Harris (2/38), the home side were in deep trouble needing 100 runs from just 16 overs. Enter Consalvo as he combined with Jake Kuss (24) to put on 44 runs for the fifth wicket. Four more wickets fell to leave Goolwa needing 18 runs to win with just two wickets in hand. Crees (7 not out) joined Consalvo to see the Magpies to victory with two overs to spare in an excellent game of Cricket. Noarlunga has started their 2020/21 campaign with consecutive victories following a 39-run triumph over a visiting McLaren Districts outfit. The home side batted first and posted a very competitive total of 5/182 from their 40 overs. Shoes skipper Jason Scarff made his second half century for the season as he compiled a fine innings of 85 from 95 balls before being run out. He added 52 runs for the second wicket with brother David Scarff (25) while Michael Smith (34 not out) and Jeff Colo (8 not out) added an invaluable 45 runs in an undefeated sixth wicket stand. Four Crushers bowlers took wickets with Andrew Fechner (1/23 off 8) the most economical. The visitors were never really in the hunt during their run chase as they slumped to 7/98 in reply. Luke Goodieson played a lone hand in the top order for McLaren with a top-scoring 40 (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6’s). Bodie Wilson (34 not out) and David Smith (20 not out) put some respectability on the scoreboard with a 45-run partnership to see McLaren Districts finish on 7/143 after their 40 overs. Ethan Alderman took the bowling honours again for the Shoes with figures of 3/23 from eight overs. Alderman has taken seven wickets in the opening two games at an average of 6.71 to lead the GSCA wicket tally. David Scarff (2/28) and Matty Ray (2/32) were the other wicket takers for Noarlunga.Willunga has also started the season with back-to-back victories, this time by seven wickets at Encounter Bay. The Demons sent the home side in and it was a real struggle for the Bays as they slipped to a precarious 5/26 before skipper Cam Lintern and Ambrose Willoughby added 36 runs for the sixth wicket. Lintern was ultimately dismissed for a top-scoring 31 as the Bays lurched to 8/77 from their 40 overs. Tye McIvor (2/3 off 8) & Simon Roberts (2/18 off 7) were the multiple wicket takers for the Demons while special mention needs to be made of Luke Goldner’s miserly spell of 1/0 from six overs! Encounter Bay needed a miracle and they were off to a good start as Willunga fell to 3/39 with Riley Williams (2/15) and Shane Hastings (1/16) doing the early damage. Roberts (29 not out) and Braden Altus (9 not out) steadied the ship to see the Demons home by seven wickets in the 28th over. Ladder (after round 2)Noarlunga 12, Willunga 12, Goolwa 6, Encounter Bay 6, Port Elliot 0, McLaren Districts 0.Round 3 fixtures (two-day games/home team named first)Willunga v Noarlunga*McLaren Districts v Port ElliotEncounter Bay v Goolwa*Game to be played on Saturday 14/11 & Sunday 15/11. In only their second game for the season due to weather interruptions in previous rounds, Strathalbyn took on Torrens Valley at Anembo Park in Mount Barker. Strathalbyn batted first but were sent from the diamond with two catches and an out at first base ending the innings. Torrens Valley were also out quickly in their batting dig with an out at first and catches taken by Emily Eglitis in the outfield and Kelly Roe at first base holding them scoreless. The second batting dig for Strath was also quick with no runs gained with Torrens Valley fielding well with two outs at first base and a catch in the outfield by Mackenzie Ween. This brought Torrens Valley back in to bat and Strathalbyn were on fire in the field with a catch in the outfield by Tash Mayes and two K2’s to pitcher/catcher combo Tessa Norris to Kim Cutting for a three up/three down innings with no score. Strathalbyn needed to get on the scoreboard and the innings started with Tiahna Mayes getting safely on to base and forcing an error to get her to second before she stole third base. Norris had a hit to the outfield which brought Mayes home but the next three batters got out which left Norris stranded but with one run finally on the board. Some big hitting and great running from Torrens Valley brought in six runs before Strath could make the three outs with a catch to Cutting at home, a runner out for interference and another catch to Eglitis in the outfield. Strathalbyn’s fourth turn at bat was again quick with three up/ three down, two outs at first base and a K2 to pitcher/catcher combination Courtney May to Georgia Ballard. Strath needed to hold Torrens Valley as much as they could and started well with an out at first base but again great hitting and base running brought in another three runs. A tag out at first and some good fielding from shortstop Crystal Karayiannis, who threw to first for the last out to end the innings. The final score was Torrens Valley 9 to Strathalbyn 1.In the other ‘A’ grade game, Hahndorf had a big 19-1 win over USC Bears to remain undefeated and on top of the ladder.‘A’ Grade Women LadderHahndorf 4, USC Bears 2, TVR 2, Strathalbyn 0.‘A’ Grade Women Fixtures (Anembo Park Diamond 1)Strathalbyn v Hahndorf (Friday 6.30pm)USC Bears v TVR (Friday 8.15pm)

Fleurieu Surf Life Saving Club to undergo major redevelopment
Fleurieu Surf Life Saving Club to undergo major redevelopment

06 November 2020, 9:00 PM

After more than a decade of planning, Surf Life Saving SA is proud to reveal the plans of the redevelopment of the Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club. It is currently the biggest Surf Lifesaving Club re-development in the state. Boasting a new patrol and first aid area, training and change rooms, as well as a jet-ski storage area, the complete rebuild will give patrolling members state-of-the-art facilities to help save lives along one of the most beautiful beaches in South Australia. The build is expected to be completed by the end of May 2021 and Surf Life Saving SA CEO, Damien Marangon hopes South Australian’s will be proud of their latest hub that will help and honour the efforts of the dedicated volunteers in the important region. “The PESLSC and the precinct at Horseshoe Bay represents an important part of our strategy of looking after South Australians. The rebuild means we can continue efforts to service the community and the south coast. We know what the PESLSC means to the local communities and how it is a high visitation place,” Mr Marangon explained. The local community will also benefit, with the plans including a function room and café deck for outdoor dining. PESLSC president Peter Francis and his team have worked tirelessly on the project to make sure the local community were consulted and the design reflects what locals and tourists were asking for. “The development will not only help save lives but be a boost for the family culture at the club and will definitely sustain the club's future well into the future. The building will be a jewel in the crown of our town and it's likely the site will become a rescue hub for the Encounter Coast so we've planned ahead for this in the scale of the build," PESLSC president Peter Francis explained. South Australian builder, Partek Construction and Interiors won the tender to deliver the build and will be led by local architect Terry Boxall from Intro Architecture. Fundraising efforts by the Club, as well as significant contributions from The State Government, Surf Life Saving SA and the Alexandrina Council support the project. “It is promising to see this build inch closer to reality. It will create 20 trade jobs during construction and mean a further 10 staff will be employed in the function space when complete, providing a boost for the local economy and community,” Emergency Services Minister Vincent Tarzia said. During the build, and throughout summer, lifesaving will continue at Horseshoe Bay, with patrols on the beach weekends and public holidays from Saturday, October 10th, through to Easter Monday on April 5th 2021. Lifesavers will be based out of containers on the lawns in front of the caravan park, giving them fast access to holidaymakers and locals on the beach. As the Port Elliot community enters this exciting new stage of its club and town’s history, South Australians can take part by joining as a volunteer or supporting the club. You don't have to get up every morning and train. You don't even have to get your toes wet. Find out how at https://www.surflifesavingsa.com.au/become-a-surf-life-saver

Neeve Reiman was the pick of the bowlers for Sturt snaring 3/23 (4). The Stingrays started well in the field with Callie Wilson (1/8) removing Sturt skipper Amelia Rault for a first ball duck and the score was 1/1. Wickets were hard to come by for the Stingrays but Sturt started to fall behind the run rate as they were restricted to 4/88 from their 20 overs. Kelly Armstrong (1/11) and Ella Wilson (1/11) were the other wicket takers for the victorious Stingrays. The second grade were at Ford Oval taking on Kensington and unfortunately came up short in their victory quest. Woodside end Lobethal's undefeated run in the AEHCA
Woodside end Lobethal's undefeated run in the AEHCA

03 November 2020, 9:00 PM

Woodside moved to third spot on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder following a comprehensive 149-run victory over the previously undefeated Lobethal at Woodside Oval. The home side batted first and racked up an imposing total of 3/242 from their 45 overs with Tommy Baldock scoring his first ‘A’ grade century. Baldock batted throughout the innings to score 104 not out from 137 balls (10 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s), his first ‘A’ grade century. Baldock was involved in three significant partnerships during the innings. A 56-run opening partnership with Dave Wescombe (35), 75 runs for the third wicket with Todd Price (42), and an undefeated fourth wicket stand with Brad Collins (32 not out) worth 92 runs. It was a tough day for the Lobethal bowlers with Dave Huxter (1/18), Cam Winen (1/48) and Mitch Weeks (1/56) the wicket takers for the Tigers. Lobethal were never in the hunt during the run chase as they were bowled out for just 93 in the 30th over. Only Dan Norsworthy (17) and Jacob Collins (15) made 15 runs or more for the Tigers. Sam Luck (3/11), Steve Ball (3/26) and Chris Baschiera (2/12) were the multiple wicket takers for the Warriors. Ball has 12 wickets at an average of 9.58 to lead the AEHCA wicket takers in 2020/21.Nairne won their second game in a row with a 68-run win against Strathalbyn at Nairne Oval. The win was set up by the top order of the Razorbacks with opener Jarrad Tait smashing 67 from just 44 balls. Tait hit 8 x 4’s and 3 x 6’s before being the first man dismissed with the score on 95. Robert Crook (31) and Sam Rowe (37) continued on for the home side with Mitch Hein (22) and Matt Hein (19 not out) adding some important runs at the end of the innings as Nairne posted a good total of 221 before being bowled out in the 43rd over. In his second game for the Stallions, Tim Dellatorre took 4/41 (8) and he was well supported by Matt Abbott who snared 2/22 (8). Nairne lost Tait early in the innings to an ankle injury but Mitch Hein (1/16) stepped up with the big wicket of the in-form Luke Cousins and Chad Harrop (2/17) and Matt Hein (2/30) claimed a couple of wickets each. Shane Kenney stepped in to run-out the Stallions skipper Mark Abbott to keep Nairne right on top. Zach Reekie (25) and Brayden Gaiter (25) were the only Strathalbyn batsmen to make more than 20 as they finished their 45 overs on 8/153.Mount Barker won their first game of the season with opening batsman Chris Paterson leading from the front in the Kookaburras 44-run win over Bremer/Callington at Mount Barker. Paterson made 89 from 115 balls (11 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) and combined with Jackson Lane (41) in a match-defining 113-run first wicket stand. Kaushal Gupta (27) added some important runs at the end of the innings as the Kookaburras finished on 6/190 from their 45 overs. Brad Louch (3/20) and Nick Williams (2/17) were the pick of the Cobras bowlers. The Bremer/Callington run chase started disastrously with Ajay Pundir being removed first ball by Hayden Lane who finished with the excellent figures of 3/22 from his nine overs. Arsalan Eubaid and Alfie Wenk came together and added 86 runs for the second wicket to give the visitors some hope before Wenk was dismissed for 32 (62 balls). Eubaid (50 from 87 balls) went on to register his third half century for the Cobras but when he was dismissed, Bremer/Callington lost 5/8 and the chase was over as the innings concluded at 9/146. Chris Pulford (2/20) and Jackson Lane (2/36) joined Hayden Lane as multiple wicket takers for the Kookaburras.Langhorne Creek continued their hot start to the 2020/21 season with a fourth consecutive victory, this time by eight wickets over reigning premier Hahndorf at Pine Avenue. The home side batted first and compiled a below par score of 9/130 from their 45 overs. Graydon Brand (22) was the only Magpies batsman to pass 20. All six Langhorne Creek bowlers took wickets with Chad Rothe particularly miserly taking 2/7 from a tight eight-over spell. Darcy Paech continued his consistent season with 2/23 (7) while Daniel Cleggett snared 2/33 (9). Brodie O’Dea was the mainstay of the Tigers response, scoring 76 not out from 103 balls (14 x 4’s) as the target was knocked off in the 31st over for the loss of just two wickets. It was O’Dea’s third half century for the Tigers since joining the club last season and he has also made a century for the Creeks (121 not out v Woodside last season) in just 13 innings. Shaun Tait continued his good season with the ball to snare 2/19 (9). Tait now has eight wickets from three games this season.           Wistow had the bye.Ladder (after round 4)Langhorne Creek 16, Lobethal 12, Woodside 8, Strathalbyn 8, Hahndorf 4, Nairne 4, Bremer/Callington 4, Mount Barker 4, Wistow 0.Round 5 fixtures (home teams named first)Strathalbyn v WoodsideHahndorf v LobethalLanghorne Creek v WistowNairne v Mount BarkerBremer/Callington has the bye

Great Southern Cricket Association gets underway

02 November 2020, 9:00 PM

Willunga got their premiership defence off to the perfect start with a 37-run victory over Goolwa during the opening round of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at Willunga Oval on Saturday. Willunga batted first with new skipper Luke Harding (17) and the returning Chad Franceschini (31) adding 30 runs for the first wicket. Franceschini was dismissed with the score at 3/58 which brought gun all-rounder Simon Roberts to the crease. Roberts guided the Willunga innings through to the end with an excellent knock of 67 not out (69 balls) as the Demons posted a competitive total of 7/168 from their 40 overs. Jake Ashton-Place took the bowling honours for Goolwa with figures of 4/42 (8). Goolwa’s run chase started badly with skipper Josh Jones (4) dismissed by Sean McIvor (1/21) with the score at 1/4. Luke Giddings (32) was joined by Jesse Le Ray (15) and this pair added 50 for the second wicket before a collapse of 5/29 saw the Magpies in deep trouble at 6/84. Jesse Consalvo, who crossed from Port Elliot to Goolwa in the off-season, battled hard to top score with 41 not out as Goolwa were restricted to 7/131 from their 40 overs. Roberts bowled a tight spell to finish with 1/11 (8), while Joel Docking (2/17) and Harding (2/36) were the multiple wicket takers for Willunga.Encounter Bay had a solid four-wicket win at McLaren Districts to begin their 2020/21 campaign on a winning note. The home side batted first and struggled their way to 6/118 from their 40 overs. Skipper Stephen Nairn (27) and Ben Wilcox (20) were the mainstays of the Crushers innings as they added 49 runs for the second wicket. Lachlan Cooper (19 not out) and Ryan McCurrach (13 not out) put on an unbeaten seventh wicket stand worth 31 runs to get the home side up to their final total. Shane Hastings snared 3/19 (8) and was the standout bowler for Encounter Bay. The Bays were under early pressure as they lost two quick wickets to be 2/12. Blake Bailey (23) joined Liam Magor (19) and they added 27 runs for the third wicket but when Bailey was dismissed, the visitors were in strife at 3/39. Skipper Cam Lintern joined Magor in a match-winning stand worth 48 runs for the fourth wicket and despite losing three more wickets, Encounter Bay knocked off the runs in the 37th over. Lintern went on to top score with 50 from 63 balls (5 x 4’s) while Andrew Fechner (3/16) and Nairn (2/12) were the standout bowlers for the Crushers.Noarlunga took on Port Elliot at home in a rematch of last season's semi-final to begin the season. Port Elliot sent the Shoes in and the move paid early dividends as Anthony Burgess (1) was dismissed by Ben Griffiths (1/24) to leave the home side at 1/2. The dismissal of Burgess brought David Scarff in to join his brother Jason as this pair set about putting up a good total to defend. The partnership was worth 116 runs as Noarlunga looked set for a total of 170+ at one stage. Jason Scarff was dismissed for 59 from 90 balls (8 x 4’s) and the innings stalled due to some fine bowling from Colby Whitbourne who claimed 3/18 from a fiery seven-over spell. David Scarff was the last man dismissed for an excellent 64 from 98 balls (9 x 4’s) as Noarlunga made 7/149 from their 40 overs. The Port Elliot run chase began disastrously with Ethan Spriggs run-out after a direct hit from Matthew Ray from mid wicket. Colby Whitbourne (32) and Brodie Whitbourne (24) had the Bloods well on top at 1/47 in the 12th over before Ray (1/16) removed Colby Whitbourne which triggered a dramatic collapse. Port Elliot lost their last nine wickets for just 38 runs to be bowled out for 85 in the 34th over. Ethan Alderman (4/24) and Jason Scarff (3/6) did all the damage with the ball for the Shoes.Ladder (after round 1)Noarlunga 6, Willunga 6, Encounter Bay 6, McLaren Districts 0, Goolwa 0, Port Elliot 0.Round 2 fixtures (one-day games/home teams named first)Encounter Bay v WillungaGoolwa v Port ElliotNoarlunga v McLaren Districts

Falcons fly up to second spot on the Hills Cricket Association ladder
Falcons fly up to second spot on the Hills Cricket Association ladder

02 November 2020, 7:00 AM

Flagstaff Hill moved into second spot on the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ladder following an excellent five-wicket win over Meadows at Flagstaff Hill on Saturday. Meadows batted first and Jack Walton struck early to dismiss the dangerous Luke Tonkin (5). This brought skipper Rohan Reid to the crease to join brother Haydn and this pair set about getting the Bulldogs’ innings going with a 43-run second wicket stand before Haydn Reid was dismissed for 17 (43 balls). Rohan Reid (28 from 55 balls) was next to go as Meadows were struggling at 3/64. Worse was to follow as the reigning premier lost their last seven wickets for just 40 runs with only Max Buckley (18 from 30 balls) putting up any resistance. Meadows were eventually bowled out for 104 in the 35th over. James Patterson was the pick of the Falcons bowlers as he snared 3/26 (8). Angus Heaton (2/12) and Walton (2/15) were the other multiple wicket takers. Meadows took to the field in search of early wickets and the returning Angus Frazer (2/20 off six overs) gave them some hope as he removed both openers to leave Flaggies in a bit of trouble at 2/23. Heaton and Oliver Styles (10) then joined together to add 22 runs for the third wicket before Styles was removed to leave the score at 3/45 and Meadows had a slight sniff of an improbable victory. However it wasn’t to be as Stephen Wheatland came in and made a quickfire 20 (26 balls) while Heaton steered the Falcons to victory in the 34th over with a fine 44 not out (90 balls). Stirling notched their first win of 2020/21 as they ground out a two-wicket victory over Kangarilla at Stirling Oval. The home side sent Kangarilla into bat and Kangies got off to a flier with Cole Davy (20 from 14 balls) and Steve Featherstone (29) adding 27 for the first wicket. Featherstone and Matthew Bertelsmeier (7) added another 38 runs for the second wicket to get the visitors up to 1/65. It was slow going with the bat and this led to a middle order collapse as Kangies lost 5/19 to slip to a precarious score of 6/84. Skipper Che Martinsen (29) and Ben Evans (15) got some momentum back into the innings but ultimately Kangarilla were bowled out for 124 in the 40th over. Jacob Kemp (3/15), Pete Fryer (3/16) and Kosta Sinodinos (2/18) were the stars for the Eagles with the ball. The Stirling run chase started badly with Daniel Gonzalez (1) removed by Martinsen with the score at 1/4. This brought Sinodinos to the crease to join opener Myles Collins as Stirling started to get on top. Their partnership realised 42 runs for the second wicket before Collins was removed for 17 (51 balls). Sinodinos continued to provide stability through the Eagles innings as he made a fine 53 (87 balls) but at 8/114, it was ‘game on’. It was left to youngster Kemp and veteran Fryer to add 12 runs for the ninth wicket to get the Eagles over the line with three balls to spare. Ben Evans (3/26), Martinsen (2/13) and Featherstone (2/31) battled hard with the ball for Kangarilla. Uraidla won their second game of the season with a five-wicket victory over Scott Creek Ironbank at Cherry Gardens Oval. The home side batted first and posted a competitive total of 6/147 from their 40 overs, their highest score of the season so far. Darcy Campbell dominated the innings for Scott Creek Ironbank as he made his highest ‘A’ grade score with a gutsy 72 from 113 balls (6 x 4’s, 1 x 6’s). Andy Adams (20) and youngster Zane Lewis (13 not out) played solid support roles for Campbell. Five Uraidla bowlers took wickets with Renzo Gaetan (2/31) the multiple wicket taker for Uraidla. Scott Creek ironbank started their bowling stint well as Danny Coleman (1/23) removed the dangerous Alex Heptinstall (8) to leave the visitors at 1/13. Ben Sheppard (22) and Thomas Bassett (15) made handy contributions but it was teenager Mitch Makings who was the star of the Uraidla innings as he scored 42 from 60 balls (5 x 4’s) to get the Demons close to victory. Ryan Hunter (20 not out) and skipper Michael Parker (14 not out) got their side across the line in the 37th over. Adams was the pick of the Scott Creek Ironbank bowlers with figures of 2/18 from six overs. Aldgate held on to defeat Mount Lofty by 11 runs at Aldgate Oval and are now the only undefeated team in the competition after three rounds. Aldgate batted first and were in plenty of strife early as they slipped to 4/40. Josh Callaghan remained resilient as wickets fell around him and he found a willing ally in Harry Morbey. These two resurrected the Gaters innings with a 58-run stand for the fifth wicket before Morbey was removed for 32 from 39 balls (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Callaghan was then joined by Jack Woollard as Aldgate started to take control with a 48-run sixth wicket partnership before Callaghan was removed in the 37th over for a fighting 50 from 101 balls (3 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). All hell broke loose in the final two overs with Aldgate scoring 40 runs, Woollard hitting 37 of them, as he finished his first knock as an Aldgate player with 58 not out from 38 balls (4 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). The home side finished with a competitive score of 8/188 from their 40 overs. Aaron Smith (4/36) and Adam Carthew (2/36) were the multiple wicket takers for Mount Lofty. Smith got the Redcaps off to a flier with 13 from 10 balls until he was bowled by Woollard to have the visitors 1/23. Carthew was joined by skipper Jordan Neis-Beer in an excellent partnership worth 62 runs for the second wicket before Carthew was dismissed for 48 from 63 balls (6 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Neis-Beer continued on to make 62 from 100 balls (2 x 4’s, 4 x 6’s) but the Redcaps couldn’t keep up with the required run rate as they were bowled out for 177 in the 40th over. Skipper Jake Turnbull (2/21), Woollard (2/25) and Perry Edwards (2/51) were the multiple wicket takers for Aldgate. “We are very happy to remain undefeated after a tight win. Josh and Harry got us back in the game and Jack finished the innings off well to give us good momentum into the field,” said Aldgate captain Jake Turnbull.Ladder (after round 3)Aldgate 18, Flagstaff Hill 12, Mount Lofty 12, Uraidla 12, Kangarilla 6, Meadows 6, Stirling 6, Scott Creek Ironbank 0.Round 4 fixtures (home teams named first)Mount Lofty v MeadowsKangarilla v AldgateStirling v UraidlaFlagstaff Hill v Scott Creek Ironbank

Providing athletes with greater certainty
Providing athletes with greater certainty

30 October 2020, 7:30 PM

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is providing sports and athletes with greater certainty further into the future, committing in advance more than $115 million to Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games sports for the 2021-22 financial year. The AIS will increase direct investment into Paralympic sport by more than $3million in 2021-22 and will extend the vast majority of current funding levels for able-bodied sports through to the end of June 2022. Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Chair John Wylie says: “This gives sports funding clarity for the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics and the 2022 Commonwealth Games. It is also a springboard towards Paris 2024. “We are particularly pleased to also announce an increase of $3.02 million funding to Paralympic sports, which will benefit 13 sporting programs. Since 2012, the ASC has increased funding to Paralympic sports by 40 per cent. Paralympic sports in Australia now receive an equal or greater share of AIS funding on a comparable basis to other major Olympic and Paralympic nations. We are truly delighted this is the case. These are merit-based investments reflecting the achievements of our Paralympic athletes, but they are also further recognition of how they inspire our nation,” Mr Wylie says. ASC Commissioner and Paralympic champion Kurt Fearnley said the funding announcement was vital for the future recognition and growth of Paralympic sport. “It is 20 years since the Sydney 2000 Paralympics, which helped create an incredible legacy for Paralympic sport in Australia. We’ve worked hard to maintain that culture of success and the requirement to be a Paralympic athlete now means you need your heart, soul and life committed to that sport. So we're investing and creating new pathways to ensure we keep our reputation as one of the strongest Para-sport communities in the world,” Mr Fearnley says. “A key feature of this Paralympic funding is that it’s being directed straight to National Sporting Organisations so that sports can take real ownership in developing their Paralympic programs. That’s important to ensure we raise the prominence of Paralympic programs right across Australian sport.” AIS CEO Peter Conde said the overall funding decisions achieve the right balance between providing sports with longer-term certainty but also providing flexibility for performance-based changes in the lead-up to Paris 2024. “We’re in a unique situation where this current Games cycle has extended to five years, so we will only have three years between Tokyo and Paris” Mr Conde says. “The AIS will continue discussions with sports with the aim of announcing the remainder of funding for the complete Paris cycle by December 2021. “In the meantime, by giving sports high performance funding certainty through to June 2022, we are giving sports and athletes the best possible chance to succeed on the world stage at major upcoming international events. “It’s good news in particular for Commonwealth Games sports looking ahead to Birmingham 2022. “In addition to this funding announcement, the AIS also invests more than $18m a year in direct grants to sports through pathway funding for emerging young athletes and athlete wellbeing, while we provide more than $14m a year in direct grants to athletes to support their training and competition.” Mr Wylie says: “With sport investment funding, pathway programs and athlete income assistance, the ASC is directly investing $147 million in Australian high performance sport this financial year, up 37 per cent from the $107 million in 2012. The ASC is very proud to have driven such a substantial increase in AIS investment in sport. “This would not have been possible without the steadfast support of the Australian Government, and on behalf of all Australian athletes and sports lovers, we thank them for it.” The 13 Paralympic programs receiving an increase in funding are: Archery; Athletics; Basketball; Bowls; Cycling; Paddle; Equestrian; Rowing; Rugby; Triathlon; Table Tennis; Shooting; and Swimming. Kurt Fearnley, Paralympic champion and John Wylie, ASC Chair discus the funding and the future of Australia's Paralympic future HERE
