COVID protest at Victor Harbor Civic Centre

About 20 Fleurieu locals opposed to COVID-19 vaccination requirements took a stand outside the Victor Harbor Civic Centre this morning.

Members of the ‘Stand in the Park Victor Harbor’ group lined the walkway to the centre’s front entrance, holding signs with slogans such as “Unity not Segregation” and “Jab Does not Stop the Spread”.

Group spokesman Tony McGrail said today’s protest was prompted by a motion carried at the last council meeting that required all councillors to provide proof of their double vaccination status by 27 January.

Councillors who did not provide evidence are now unable to attend the Civic Centre and will need to attend meetings electronically.

Mr McGrail said they had delivered a letter regarding the council’s COVID-19 policies to Mayor Moira Jenkins and were waiting for her reply.

He said this was not the group’s first protest and would not be their last.

They also protested outside the Rotary Victor Harbor Art Show in Warland Reserve in January.

Patrons attending the show were being asked to show their vaccination stations before entry.

Mr McGrail said the Stand in the Park movement has over 150 members on the Fleurieu.

They meet each Sunday at Warland Reserve from 10 to 11am.

“We’re not anti-vaxxers; we’re anti-mandate,” Tony said. He said some of the group’s members chose to be vaccinated and some did not.

He also said the group contained nurses and teachers who had lost their jobs because of their decision not to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

He said the Stand in the Park meetings provided members with a security net "to remind themselves that they aren't alone in this”.

“We’re excluded from society. We’re not the bad guys,” he said.

In other COVID-19 news, the Fleurieu is still without a Rapid Antigen Test collection point.

The nearest collection sites are at Noarlunga Centre and Mount Barker.
