A group of South Coast residents will brave the weather today for the first plastics pickup of the newly formed Friends of Goolwa Beach.
If you are interested in joining, bring a bucket or bag to the Goolwa Beach carpark at 10am this morning and say hello.
The idea for the group came to organiser Leon Mead last week and he quickly created a presence on Facebook and organised today’s clean up session.
He and his wife Bea walk regularly through the sand dunes and always collect rubbish on their way.
“We end up juggling it in our arms and pockets as we head home and pop it in our rubbish bin,” he said.
It was on one of the these walks the idea for the group was born.
“A simple group of people walking the beach, picking up plastics, social interaction, exercise and do something for our community and the environment,” he said.
“Nothing complicated or hard-core activism.”
“No confrontation or policing acts.”
“Just pick up plastics.”
“Be social, happy, friendly and fun.”
If you can’t make it this morning, follow The Friends of Goolwa Beach Facebook page for further events.
