Cobras strike for their first win in Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket

27 November 2023, 9:00 AM

Bremer Callington won their first game of the year with an upset one-wicket win against the previously undefeated Langhorne Creek during round eight action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) at Callington on Saturday. The Cobras sent the visitors into bat and it was hard going as Langhorne Creek were bowled out for 112. Kensington regular Adam Clements top scored for the Tigers with 26 (49 balls). Shannon Howie (3/14), Johnny Fitzgerald (2/6) and Nathan Fitzgerald (2/42) were the leading wicket takers for Bremer Callington. The Cobras were soon in trouble in the run chase as they slipped to 4/34 before Howie (13) and Nathan Fitzgerald (13) made handy contributions in partnership with Graydon Brand. Brand would turn out to be the hero as he scored 45 not out (110 balls) to get his side over the line with one wicket and 21 balls to spare. Clements (4/35) and Ben Warren (2/10) were the pick of the Langhorne Creek bowlers. Lobethal went to the top of the AEHCA ladder following a high-scoring 30-run win at Nairne. Lobethal batted first with Mitch Weeks and Daniel Norsworthy putting on 140 for the first wicket before Weeks went for 69 from 61 balls (11 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Norsworthy continued on to make 58 from 84 balls (7 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s), while Ben Matthews (41 not out) and Sam Graeber (26) added 56 runs for the sixth wicket with the Tigers posting 8/257 from their 45 overs. Duncan Rogers was the standout bowler for the Razorbacks with 5/37 (8). Nairne gave a good account of themselves in the run chase with Luke Timmins (59), Chris Farrell (46) and Chad Harrop (30 not out) leading the way but ultimately they came up short, bowled out in the 39th over for 227. Graeber (3/14), Jeremy Hackett (2/33), Weeks (2/40) and Dave Huxter (2/53) were the wicket takers for Lobethal.Macclesfield won their fourth game of the season after a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Hahndorf. The Magpies were bowled out for just 63 in the 22nd over with Hudson Judd (13) the only batsman to reach double figures. All five Redbacks bowlers took wickets with Kieran O’Connell (4/21), Joseph Lions (2/7) and Connor Moore (2/26) the main destroyers. Macclesfield made light work of the run chase, bringing up the winning runs in just the 14th over without losing a wicket. David Schulze (29 not out) and Tom Filsell (19 not out) were the batsmen for ‘Maccy’ who enjoyed the early finish as they moved back inside the top-four on the ladder. Strathalbyn won their fourth game on the trot to keep the pressure on for a top-two spot after defeating Woodside by eight wickets at ‘Strath’. The Stallions won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling first. It was a good move as the Warriors batsmen struggled to convert promising starts with Chris Baschiera (20) the only player to reach 20 runs. Matthew Harris (4/10), Kane Gaiter (3/37) and Jack Roberts (2/21) were the chief destroyers as the visitors were bowled out for 104. 27 November 2023, 6:00 AM

Port Elliot moved to the top of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) ladder after a convincing 111-run win against Myponga-Sellicks at Myponga on Saturday. Port Elliot made 6/218 on day one of the clash, and this proved more than enough as the Mudlarks struggled their way to a total of 107 before being bowled out in the 66th over. Kobe Dooley (29), Sean Haverty (21) and Cam Turner (15) were the leading run scorers for Myponga-Sellicks. The undefeated Port Elliot used eight bowlers with Luke Collett (3/15), Ryan Boyce (2/1), Josh Andrewartha (2/38), Scott Hannam (1/5) and Harrison Grenfell (1/6) the wicket takers.Willunga moved into second position on the GSCA ladder following a tight 20-run win against McLaren Districts. The Crushers started day two in a strong position at 0/19 in reply to Willunga’s first innings total of 137, but four early wickets saw them in strife at 4/34. Daniel Petrucci (15) and Ben Worrall (12) added 25 runs for the fifth wicket, while George Beard (29) and Worrall put on 38 for the sixth wicket and with the score on 5/97, McLaren Districts were right in the game. Simon Roberts and Sean McIvor had other ideas as they combined to take the last five wickets for just 20 runs as the crushers were bowled out for 117. Roberts bowled a marathon 31 overs unchanged and returned the excellent figures of 6/44 (14 maidens), while McIvor finished with 3/34 (20.4).Reigning premiers Noarlunga won back-to-back games for the first time in 2023/24 after defeating a gallant Yankalilla by 25 runs at Yankalilla on Saturday. The Tigers got off to a fast start chasing the Shoes’ first innings total of 7/208 with Aaron Smith making a quickfire 43 (7 x 4’s) before being dismissed by the returning Peter Lamz (1/28). Luke Bartlett was batting well for the home side and he found an ally in Geoff Rosser (11) as this pair added 55 runs for the fifth wicket. Travis Bronstein (2/34) made a double strike just before Tea to see ‘Yank’ at 6/112 and in trouble. Bartlett continued on after the interval but was running out of partners as the ninth wicket fell at 146. Scott Wilson (3 not out) fought hard as Bartlett farmed the strike cleverly to bring up a well-deserved century before being run out for 101 (14 x 4’s) with the Tigers finishing all out for 183. Noarlunga skipper Chad Parrish (3/20), Cam Bullard (2/25) and Jason Scarff (1/41) were the other wicket takers for Noarlunga. Goolwa registered their first win of the 2023/24 season with a resounding 171-run victory over Victor Harbor on Saturday. Todd Dellatorre (34) and Ben James (15 not out) were the only Mylor batsmen to reach double figures. Five Stirling bowlers took wickets with Read (3/20), Pete Fryer (2/2) and McFadyen (2/27) leading the way.Mount Lofty won their fourth game of 2023/24 with a 35-run win against Bridgewater in a high scoring contest at Heathfield Oval yesterday. The Raiders got off to a good start, taking two early wickets as Mount Lofty slipped to 2/25. Overall on fire for the Bays in Great Southern Cricket

21 November 2023, 6:00 AM

A big Matt Overall century fired top-of-the-ladder Encounter Bay to a huge first innings total of 6/394 on day one of their clash with Mount Compass at Burgess Oval during round five action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) on Saturday. Overall had a day out as he finished with 189 not out (23 x 4's, 6 x 6's), while veteran Cam Lintern came up agonisingly short of the magical ton with 95 (11 x 4's, 3 x 6's). The partnership between Overall and Lintern was worth a whopping 197 runs. Luke Crichton (29), Sam Hoffmann (29) and Luke Duffill (23) also made handy contributions to the Bays big total. Noarlunga posted a competitive total of 7/208 on day one of their clash with Yankalilla. After being sent in to bat by the home side, the Shoes innings was set up by a 113-run second wicket stand between Travis Bronstein and Anthony Tucker. Tucker was dismissed for 61 (6 x 4’s), while Bronstein batted through the innings, finishing on 87 not out (6 x 4’s). Zander Trezise (21) also made a handy contribution in a 41-run stand with Bronstein. Aaron Smith (3/51), Luke Bartlett (2/42), Ashley Madden (1/12) and Scott Wilson (1/27) were the wicket takers for the Tigers. Port Elliot are in a good position to continue their undefeated start to the season after making 6/218 on day one of their clash with Myponga-Sellicks at Myponga. The total was set up by an excellent third wicket partnership between Ethan Spriggs and skipper Joel Harris. Spriggs opened the batting and was the ‘rock’ of the innings with a patient 70 from 183 balls (4 x 4’s), while Harris finished on 88 not out from 138 balls (1 x 4, 1 x 6). Port Elliot hit just eight boundaries for the day on the slow outfield so it will be a tough chase for the Mudlarks. Vinnie Nizzola (4/50) and Ryan Haverty (2/38) were the wicket takers for Myponga-Sellicks. McLaren Districts had a good first day in their important round five clash at Willunga on Saturday. The Crushers ended the day on 0/19 (Jim Ryan 11 not out, Daniel Bruce 6 not out) in reply to the Demons first innings total of 137. Earlier, Willunga batted first and were soon in strife at 3/19. Harding went on to top score and was the last batsman dismissed for 61 from 182 balls (4 x 4’s). Six McLaren Districts bowlers took wickets with Jett Holberton (3/15) and Ryan (3/16) leading the way. Goolwa are in a good position to win their first game of the season after scoring 3/240 on day one of their clash on the turf at Victor Harbor. The Magpies innings was underpinned by a century to all-rounder Andy Evans. Evans made 103 not out and he was well supported by skipper Sam Carlyle who made 69, his highest score of the season. Jake Kuss (25) also made a handy contribution to Goolwa’s score. Jesse Ortega (2/38) and Dylan Flavel (1/27) were the wicket takers for the Vipers.

Jake Beerenfels (17), Tom Filsell (16) and Luke Jones (16) were the only batsmen to reach double figures for ‘Maccy’. Five Lobethal bowlers took wickets with Zak Varik taking the honours with 5/32 from his nine overs.
