Panthers win three on the trot in Hills Softball

25 November 2024, 7:30 AM

On a very warm night Strathalbyn came up to bat first and had safe hits to the outfield by Kim Cutting and Georgia Tomkinson which brought Cutting home with Redsox short stop Steph Hull fielding and tagging the runner and quickly playing second base for a double play with the third out a K2 to pitcher/catcher Zoe Thomson to Alex Mackay. Strath did a great job in the field with third baser Peyton Daniels taking a catch, second baser Ashlee Peterson also taking a catch and a K2 to pitcher/catcher Tess Norris to Cutting to send Redsox from the diamond three up three down.Strath had some great pitch selection in the second gaining some walks which got batters on base with Tomkinson’s safe hit bringing home a run before Redsox made an out at home, another K2 and a catch at centre by Chloe Zakelj. Redsox also picked some walks and had a couple of safe hits which brought in their first run for the game before Strath could shut them down with a pick off at second base and another two K2’s.The third dig for Strath had a hit to the outfield by Daniels but she was unable to make it home with Redsox making an out at first and two K2’s to hold them scoreless. It was four up three outs and scoreless for Redsox even with a great hit to right by Hull with Strath’s pitcher/catcher combo making another K2 and Norris and Cutting both taking catches.Strath’s fourth dig had hits to Cutting, Daniels and Kathryn Milne and with some great base running they added a further three runs before Redsox left fielder Saskia Charter-Harris and right fielder Sienna Golder took catches and a K2 ended the innings. Redsox highlight in the fourth was a hit to right field by Catalina Sterian but Strath’s new pitcher Daniels worked hard with Cutting for three K2’s which held Redsox scoreless again.Even with a hit to left by Kathy Pash Strath were shut down in the fifth with Hull again great in the field taking a catch and quickly throwing to first to catch the runner short for another double play and yet another K2 for the game ended the innings with Strath unable to add to their score. Redsox got batters on base and with a two base hit to Mackay and great base running they brought home two runs with Strath’s Daniels making an out at first, a line drive stop and out at first by Peterson and a great running catch at right by Norris ended the innings and the game with Strathalbyn coming out on top 5 runs to 3 in a tight game.

Lobethal looking ominous in Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket
Lobethal looking ominous in Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket

18 November 2024, 6:00 AM

Reigning premier Lobethal has ominously moved to the top of the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder after a huge 329-run win against Macclesfield during round six action at Macclesfield on Saturday. The Tigers batted first with opening batsman Riley Harten and number three Lachie Bates adding 135 runs for the second wicket. Harten made 102 off 103 balls (11 x 4’s, 1 x 6), while Bates smashed 86 from just 62 balls (9 x 4’s, 5 x 6’s). The carnage didn’t end there as Dillon King added a quickfire 78 not out from 41 balls with five fours and five sixes as Lobethal amassed a huge total of 8/386 from their 45 overs. All of the Redbacks bowlers took a bit of a hammering with Josh Lewis-Burns (3/93) and Coebe Holt (2/93) the multiple wicket takers. Chasing such a huge total was always going to be hard work and so it turned out as ‘Maccy’ were bundled out for just 57. Lewis-Burns top scored with 25 not out (17 balls), while Connor Moore (11) was the only other batsman to reach double figures. Lobethal only used two bowlers with Matt Martin having a day out with figures of 6/14 from 8.4 overs, while Dave Huxter took 2/43 (8). Woodside made it four wins on the trot, and in the process moved up to second spot on the ladder, following their 97-run win at home against Strathalbyn. The Warriors batted first as Brad Collins (47) and Trent Young (34) added 79 for the first wicket. Collins and Dave Wescombe then put on 59 for the second wicket as Wescombe went on to top score with 55 from 50 balls (10 x 4’s). Noah Bell (35) and Michael Hennessy (22 not out) made handy contributions as Woodside posted 5/233 from their 45 overs. Left-armer Mark Abbott was the standout with the ball for the Stallions with figures of 3/26 from his nine overs. Strathalbyn were never really in the run chase with only two batsmen passing 20 as they were bowled out for 136 in the 36th over. Kane Gaiter made 29 (43), while Matt Harris was the standout with 57 from 72 balls (8 x 4’s). Five Warriors bowlers took wickets including Chris Baschiera (2/15), Craig Medlow (2/16), Shane Druwitt (2/30) and Nick Johns (2/39).Langhorne Creek consolidated their spot in the top-four with a 35-run victory at Hahndorf on Saturday. The visitors batted first and were soon in strife at 2/21, before Shannon Jones (47) and Ben Warren (40) came together to add 55 for the third wicket. Troy Blackwell (41) and Jayden Michelmore (36) put on 73 runs for the sixth wicket, while Dan Kropp added the finishing touches with a hard-hitting 30 from 17 balls at the end of the innings. The Tigers posted a very competitive total of 9/242 from their 45 overs with Ryan Trafford-Walker (3/53) the major wicket taker for the Magpies. Ben Salt (34), Sam Williams (24) and Ben Montgomerie (21) made handy contributions to start the Hahndorf run chase, but at 6/117, the game appeared over. Trafford-Walker (37) and Jack Phelan (42) had other ideas as they added 56 runs for the seventh wicket. Ultimately it wasn’t enough as the Magpies were bowled out in the 43rd over for 207. All six Langhorne Creek bowlers took wickets with Warren (2/19), Brad Clements (2/29) and Dan Cleggett (2/47) leading the way. Nairne won their third game of the season after a comfortable six-wicket win over Bremer Callington. The Cobras batted first and got off to a good start as they reached 3/139 with Jai McMurtrie (36), Graydon Brand (35), Alex Durbidge (27) and Nathan Fitzgerald (20) making handy contributions. The innings stalled somewhat after that good start as Bremer Callington posted 8/153 from their 45 overs. Brodie Clarke (3/22) was the pick of the Razorbacks bowlers and he was ably supported by Caleb Walker (3/44) and William Brooks (2/23). The run chase got off to a bit of a shaky start for Nairne as they slipped to 2/30, and then 4/82, before Brad Christie (31 not out) joined Luke Timmins to add an unbroken fifth wicket stand worth 73 runs as the Razorbacks brought up the win in just the 29th over. Timmins finished with 72 not out from 75 balls (11 x 4’s), while Brand was the best of the Cobras bowlers with 3/28 off seven overs. Ladder (after round 6)Lobethal 20, Woodside 16, Hahndorf 16, Langhorne Creek 16, Nairne 12, Strathalbyn 8, Bremer Callington 8, Macclesfield 0.Round 7 fixtures (home team named first)  Bremer Callington v HahndorfLanghorne Creek v Macclesfield Lobethal v WoodsideStrathalbyn v Nairne

Strathalbyn’s Kathy Pash led the Panthers with a first ball hit to the outfield and with great base running stole her way home with Peyton Daniels gaining a walk and being brought home by Kathryn Milne but they were the only runs gained while even though they got batters on Hahndorf shut them down with an out at third, an out at home and a put out at first by Jess Matchett. Hahndorf’s first dig also produced a hit to the outfield by Breanna Luxon and she was brought home by Sophie Walton but that was the only run for the innings with Strath’s second baser Ashlee Peterson making an out at first, a K2 to pitcher/catcher Tess Norris to Gab Marting and a great running catch taken by centre Pash. While Strath got batters on base in the second they were unable to bring any home with Hahndorf making an out at first, an out at home to stop the run and a K2 to pitcher/catcher Lucy Weatherstone and Walton. Hahndorf’s batting dig included safe hits to Matchett, Nancy Johns, Luxon and Charlotte Fairley and a two baser to Megan Williams which brought in six runs with Strath’s centre fielder Pash taking another great catch, a K2 and a pick off of the lead runner at second by Georgia Tomkinson ended the innings.Strath refocused for their third batting dig and with some great pitch selection they gained eight walks with a single to Norris and with loaded bases the highlight was a grand slam hit to right field by Tomkinson helping to bring in a total of seven runs to add to the tally. Hahndorf were looking to repeat their second batting dig and had a safe hit to Johns but they were unable to bring anyone home with new pitcher Daniels working well with Martin for two K2’s and another great catch at centre by Pash keeping them scoreless with Strathalbyn holding on for the win 9 runs to 7.

Mt Compass resumed at 1/31 in pursuit of the Crushers’ first innings of 185 and the game looked evenly poised. It wasn’t to be, as only one Mt Compass batsman, Aaron Dalitz (24 not out), reached 20 with the home side bowled out in the 41st over for just 91. Three Crushers bowlers took wickets with George Beard leading the way with 4/34 (17) and he was well supported by Roy Graham (3/30) and Stephen Nairn (2/19).Reigning premier Encounter Bay moved into the top-six with a thrilling seven-run win against Goolwa yesterday. Noarlunga are in a great position at stumps on day one of their clash with Willunga during round four action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at Willunga on Saturday. Jamie Diener smashed 204 from just 92 deliveries as the Shoes declared at 4/287 in just the 34th over. Diener’s first 100 came from 49 deliveries, before upping the ante to make his second hundred off just 38 balls. His innings included 13 fours and 16 sixes. Noarlunga skipper Cam Bullard made 33, while Jason Scarff (30) added 231 runs for the third wicket with Diener. The early declaration left 36 overs in the day with Willunga slumping to 5/16, before Demons skipper Rory Hanson (30) and Damien Swan (19) added 51 for the sixth wicket. Two late wickets to the Shoes saw Willunga reach stumps at 7/72. Left-arm opening bowler Sean Williams claimed his first five-wicket haul for Noarlunga with 5/21 from 11 overs. McLaren Districts and Mt Compass played out an even first day of their clash at Burgess Oval on Saturday. McLaren Districts batted first and did well to reach a total of 185 before being bowled out in the 59th over. The Crushers were in trouble at 6/77 with Daniel Petrucci making 36 from 42 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as Kevin Grant joined Bailey Winter (17). Once Winter departed, Stuart Kennewell (17) and Roy Graham (17 not out) chimed in with handy contributions, but it was Grant who was the standout with 53 from 62 balls. Five Mt Compass bowlers took wickets with Bailey Baldock (4/26), Aaron Dalitz (2/23) and Robert Martin (2/33) leading the way. Mt Compass had 11 overs to bat before stumps and reached the end of the day at 1/31 with Graham (1/15) the wicket taker for the Crushers. Reigning premier Encounter Bay’s clash with Goolwa was evenly poised after the first day with Goolwa on 1/17 chasing the Bays first innings of 147. Encounter Bay batted first with Sam Hoffmann the mainstay of the innings with a patient 62 from 154 balls (8 x 4’s), while Chris Butler chimed in with a handy knock of 29 (35) as his side were bowled out in the 67th over. James Lawrence (3/34), Sean McIvor (2/21) and Matt Overall (2/32) were the main wicket takers for the Magpies. Goolwa opted to bat the three overs left in the day and the Bays struck a big blow as Blake Bailey (1/9) removed former Encounter Bay batsman Matt Overall (8). With a number of players unavailable next week, it will be an interesting run chase for the Magpies. Myponga-Sellicks had a solid opening day of their clash with Yankalilla as they posted a competitive total of 215. The good total was set up by a 105-run second wicket stand between Michael Tomlinson (53 off 94) and Sean Haverty (47 off 127), while Lachlan Quilliam (29) and Cam Turner (24) made handy contributions. Yankalilla used nine bowlers with Aaron Smith (3/39), Jimmy Hamblin (2/20) and Joel Kay (2/27) the multiple wicket takers for the Tigers. Ladder-leader Port Elliot are in a commanding position in their home clash with Victor Harbor as they reached 2/64 at stumps on day one, in reply to the Vipers’ first innings of 100. It was hard work for Victor Harbor batting first with only Sachin Sharma (42), Luke Harding (22) and Josh Boyko (12) reaching double figures as ‘Victor’ were bowled out in the 51st over. Veteran Port Elliot bowler Simon Donaldson rolled back the clock with the fine figures of 5/21 from 16.2 overs (8 maidens), while Liam Harris snared 3/28 (7). Woodside won their third game in a row with a three-wicket win over Langhorne Creek to move up to third spot on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder during round five action at Woodside yesterday. Langhorne Creek batted first with Ben Koehler hitting a quickfire 61 from 39 balls (9 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) to get the Tigers off to a good start as they reached 0/75 in the 11th over. That’s as good as it got for Langhorne Creek as they lost their last 10 wickets for 64 runs to be bowled out in the 31st over for 139. Brayden Frost (23) was the only other ‘Creeks’ batsman to reach 20. Chris Baschiera was the star for the Warriors with the ball with 4/14 (5), while Jeremy Druwitt (2/31) and Nick Johns (2/35) chipped in with a couple of wickets each. The Woodside run chase got off to a shaky start as they fell to 3/44 in the 14th over before Noah Bell (36) and Dave Wescombe (18) steadied the ship. Bell then added 45 runs for the fifth wicket with James Bradley (27) as Woodside brought up the winning runs in the 39th over with three wickets to spare. Langhorne Creek skipper Adam Clements (3/32), Dan Kropp (2/14) and Brodie O’Dea (2/22) were the wicket takers for the Tigers. Hahndorf remained on top of the ladder after a 56-run win at Macclesfield yesterday. The Magpies batted first with Paul Allegretto (43) and Sam Williams (25) adding 65 runs for the first wicket. Steady wickets fell from then on with Hahndorf struggling to 8/142 in the 31st over as Michael Shanahan (25) and Dean Gore came together. This pair put on an all-important 37-run stand to lift Hahndorf to a total of 195 as Gore top scored with 52 (60 balls). All five Redbacks bowlers took wickets with Josh Lewis-Burns leading the way with 3/37 (9). ‘Maccy’ were never in the run chase as they finished their innings at 9/139. The Stallions batted first and were in all sorts of strife early on as they slumped to 2/2. They recovered with Luke Cousins (25) steadying proceedings, but at 5/76 the innings was in the balance. Strathalbyn skipper Brayden Gaiter joined veteran Steve Schofield in an innings-defining partnership worth 56 runs before Schofield went for 44 (68). Gaiter went on to make 43 not out (60) as Strathalbyn made their way to 8/178 from their 45 overs. Graydon Brand (3/42), Johnny Fitzgerald (2/19) and Nathan Fitzgerald (2/35) were the multiple wicket takers for the Cobras. Bremer Callington’s response never really got going as they were bundled out for 83 in the 28th over. Michael Heath (22) was the only Cobras batsman to reach 20. All five Stallions bowlers took wickets with Ryan Harvey (4/14) and Gaiter (3/21) the chief destroyers. Lobethal won their fourth game in row after a four-wicket win over Nairne to move a game clear in second spot on the AEHCA ladder. Nairne batted first with big-hitting opener Shane Kenney the standout batsman for the Razorbacks. Kenney smashed a quickfire 63 from 45 balls (4 x 4’s, 6 x 6’s), but that was the only bright spot for Nairne as they were bowled out in the 40th over for just 131. Five Lobethal bowlers took wickets including Dave Huxter (3/9), Matt Martin (3/52) and Sam Graeber (2/15). Lobethal skipper Mitch Weeks got his side off to a fast start as he joined with Steve Huxter (16) to add 65 runs for the first wicket before Weeks departed for 39 from 36 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Regular wickets fell before Daniel Norsworthy chipped in with a handy 17 not out (38 balls) to get the Tigers across the line in the 30th over. Nairne proved their own worst enemy as they delivered a whopping 32 wides. Kenney completed an excellent all-round game with figures of 4/19 from seven overs. Ladder (after round 5)Hahndorf 16, Lobethal 16, Woodside 12, Langhorne Creek 12, Strathalbyn 8, Nairne 8, Bremer Callington 8, Macclesfield 0.Round 6 fixtures (home team named first)  Nairne v Bremer CallingtonWoodside v StrathalbynMacclesfield v LobethalHahndorf v Langhorne Creek

Strathalbyn started the game well with safe hits to Kim Cutting and Ashlee Peterson and a two-bagger to Peyton Daniels which with some great base running brought home five runs with Pirates making all three outs at first in the safe glove of Tammy Mason. Strath had a great start in the field also with only a walk getting a batter on base with a K2 to pitcher/catcher combo of Tess Norris to Gab Martin and shortstop Cutting and third baser Daniels both making outs at first holding Pirates scoreless. The second dig was better in the field for Pirates with third baser Mackenzie Hunt-Breol and second baser Taminka Wilks both making outs at first and pitcher/catcher combo of Tracey Roberts to Georgia Mason working hard for a K2 to hold Strath scoreless with three up, three down. Pirates second turn at bat was better with safe hits to Katherine Butler and Stephanie Zuzolo but they were unable to bring anyone home with smart fielding by Strath picking off lead runners with two outs at second and a catch taken by Norris.Strath got batting again in the third with safe hits to Cutting and Martin and three baggers to Norris and Daniels which brought in a further five runs with a K2, an out at first by shortstop Ali Lomann and a catch taken by Lomann ending the innings. Pirates needed to get on the board and forced some errors to get batters on base but they again were unable to bring anyone home with right fielder Kathy Pash taking a catch and second baser Peterson making two outs at first. The fourth innings tightened up again in the field for Pirates with Strath unable to add to their score even though they got batters on base with Lomann fielding and playing second to pick off the lead runner and Wilks and centre Butler both taking catches. This was the last chance for Pirates to get runs on the board but again they were unable to with great pitching by new pitcher Daniels making three K2’s to end the innings and the game with Strathalbyn coming out on top 10 runs to 0.
