Breakers girls win against Marion Cove
Breakers girls win against Marion Cove

22 May 2022, 8:09 AM

The Breakers U15s came away with a fantastic 5-2 win against Marion Cove in the sunshine at Breaker Park on Sunday. For the first time in weeks, Coach O’Donnell had nearly a full team and the luxury of substitutes. The girls were on the ball from the whistle and a fired up Amber Kim sent an early shot just over the the cross bar. It didn’t take long for super striker Kayte O’Donnell to get the first goal; a great shot from a free kick on the 18 yard line. Her partner up forward, Nila Mohring, got her first shortly after and it was looking dangerous for Cove. The Marion forwards were speedy though and got the jump on the Breakers defence to get their first. The Breakers' Zoe Warren using her head. Another quick run by the visitors with no chance for goalie Ella Bryant, saw them get another soon after. Full credit to the Breakers girls though, they didn’t drop their heads and Bryant stopped their third chance just minutes later. Sophia Moore, Alanna Anderson and Tayla Perry showed excellent work in the midfield, creating chances for the forwards. At the back, Lokke Rennerts, Estelle Dybala and Hannah Rowlands were frustrating the Marion attack.  After the halftime break the girls were looking confident. A fantastic throw in by Amber Kim in the attacking half found Mohring, who popped the ball up and over the defence to O’Donnell who scored her second and put the girls ahead again at 3-2. Abby Ellis was unlucky not to score just after, from a corner. It was Kim who got the fourth goal with a fantastic effort and showing her versatility and effectiveness in all areas of the pitch. Zoe Warren was making good use of her head to get some effective play. The girls had several shots on goal with Dybala, Ellis and Mohring all unlucky. O’Donnell got the team’s fifth and final goal for the game from a great run and shot. The girls are now fourth on the ladder with six wins from eight games and a couple of makeup games in hand. Next week they travel north to take on Elizabeth Grove. Lucy Boundey sprinting down the wing. Cup round loss for Breakers U15 girls
Cup round loss for Breakers U15 girls

15 May 2022, 11:42 AM

It was cold, grey and wet on Sunday for the Breakers U15 girls match against the Modbury Jets.It was the Port Elliot girls’ first cup round and they were up against it with several players missing due to Covid and injury.Ella Bryant played her first ever game in goals and Ruby Keam again played up from a younger division to help the girls out.The game started evenly, with Zoe Warren delivering the ball to Nila Mohring and Kayte O’Donnell for some early chances.Modbury however applied the pressure early and, despite some fantastic work by Hannah Rowlands in defence, managed the first goal of the game.Hannah Rowlands has been outstanding in defence for the Breakers all seasonThe Breakers midfield of Sophia Moore, Alana Anderson, Taylor Perry and Sophie Anderson regrouped well to hold up the Modbury attack but a lucky tip saw goalie Bryant facing three attackers on her own and the score went to 0-2.Coach O’Donnell brought the super subs Ruby Keam and Zara Boundey on for some fresh legs but Modbury had the momentum.Bryant pulled off another great save, throwing herself on the ball in front of a rampaging forward and Rowlands and Amber Kim showed again their defensive value. At halftime Kev the ref had to subbed out with a leg injury. Thanks to Ricky Goodman for taking the whistle and allowing the game to continue.Whatever Coach O’Donnell told the girls during the break worked its magic and they emerged from the change rooms with renewed energy and purpose.Taylor Perry had a shot on goal early, as did Nila Mohring. Her shot missed but won the girls a corner. The kick in from O’Donnell was good Lucy Boundey got a great shot off to score for the Breakers. The Breakers celebrate Lucy Boundey's goalWith the score at 1-2 the girls continued playing with self-belief and it was unlucky for them that Modbury managed to get a shot just past the goalie and make the score 3-1.Bryant then had to go off for medical attention and Lucy Boundey was pulled out of the play and into goal. Zara Boundey also had to come off with a sore calf and with no subs to call on the score became 1-4 and then 1-5.The girls kept trying though with O’Donnell and Mohring both unlucky not to convert. The game ended at 1-5 and the girls are now out of the cup competition.Next week they take on Cove at home and with Abby Ellis, Estelle Dybala, Ella Keam and Lokke Rennerts due to return the team should be back to full strength.Image: Amber Kim played a fantastic defensive gameThanks to Tash Mohring for the images used in this story

The Strikers team all played in the U14 Girls competition last year, so the step up to U17 Girls  was always going to challenge the young squad, but the girls are up to the task. Some new players into the squad included Vivienne Zufferey, Rylee Hanley, and the returning Matilda Mundy. The game started with Mundy in goals, Ilsa Holliday at left back, Charlotte Reid and Aimee Slade in the middle of defence, with Caitlin Clothier on the left.  They were immediately put under pressure by Woodside’s strikers, but were able to hold firm. Strath’s midfielders of Evie Brook, Estelle Dybala and Leah Davis were getting more of the ball and pushing the ball forward to Savannah Dennison, Tiana Storey-Possingham and Grace Thorpe, who all showed great pace. This pace was starting to cause headaches for Woodside’s defence with Dennison and Storey-Possingham both having shots on goal, ably stopped by the Woodside goalkeeper.  Thorpe also got into the action with a shot going wide. The first half ebbed and flowed with both Woodside and Strath having periods where they controlled the game, but neither team could find the back of the net. Halftime remained at 0-0. Coach Aaron Groffen’s comments to the girls at halftime was to keep passing to each other and don’t be afraid to shoot. The second half started with Zufferey making some great runs from left midfield, providing great opportunities for Dennison and Thorpe going forward before an unfortunate incident with Dennison forced her out of the game. Mundy entered the pitch as a field player, with Holliday having reverted to goalkeeper for the second half.  All of a sudden a through ball from Dybala to Possingham-Storey, saw Possingham-Storey with a one-on-one with the goal keeper, making no mistake to take the score to 1-0.  This refocused the Woodside girls who came at ‘Strath’ with wave after wave of attacking moves, all ably cut out by Slade, Reid, Hanley and Clothier. Another attacking move saw Mundy run onto goal and slot the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0. With the girls physically tiring, it was important to defend the lead now, and only one sub left made for some headaches for Groffen, who to rest and how long for! Finally the referee called time and a great start for the Strikers girls. The final scores were Strathalbyn Strikers 2 defeating Woodside Rams 0. Strathalbyn Under 13 MixedStrathalbyn Under 13’s played against Murray Bridge Gold in the first round of the AHJFA league on Saturday. It was the first time a number of the players had played on the full sized pitch with unmodified rules, but the ‘Strath’ team didn’t show any trepidation, working together well to score two goals in the opening 10 minutes. The Murray Bridge side, with their physical presence and pace, fought back putting pressure on the defensive line of Alex Thrope, Braden Gane, Tavish Halliday and Pete Hissey. Goalkeeper Coby Sharrock stood tall in goals making a number of very good saves and demonstrating excellent potential for the season to come. The Strathalbyn team went into the half time break with the lead. The midfield work of Jules Williamson, Dallas Miles and Olly Barker created chances up front as well as supporting the defence by pushing back. Alec Zuffery played well when put out of his comfort zone by playing on the right wing while Jake Mikhail showed composure out wide controlling the ball well. Raymond Rigney demonstrated his versatility by playing in a number of different positions and the team welcomed Etienne Stark to the club who played very well in his first game in Red and White. As the game progressed the speed and experience of the Murray Bridge team caught up and passed the Strathalbyn team with the final score being Murray Bridge 8 defeating Strathalbyn 5.
