Aldgate pulled off a big upset after defeating top-of-the-ladder Stirling by 23 runs during round nine action in the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) at Aldgate on Saturday. The Gaters batted first with Pierce Cordes-Harvey (27) and Mitch Thomas (34) adding 56 runs for the first wicket, before Max Bilsborow (22) and skipper Josh Callaghan put on 49 for the third wicket. Callaghan continued on to top score with 97 from 96 balls (6 x 4’s, 6 x 6’s) as Aldgate posted 7/239 from their 45 overs. Julian Zytnik (2/38) and Charlie Fryer (2/72) were the multiple wicket takers for the Eagles. Stirling got off to a fast start in the run chase as Jack Read and Sean McCullum added 73 runs inside eight overs before Read departed for 42 (27 balls). Jack Pick (24) then joined McCullum as the Eagles got themselves into a winning position at 1/140 in the 21st over, before Jack Woollard removed Pick, and three balls later the dangerous Harrison Webb (0) was on his way, as Aldgate were back in the match. McCullum continued on to bring up his century as regular wickets fell around him. Ultimately it was McCullum who was the last man dismissed for an excellent 112 from 110 balls (14 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) as Stirling were bowled out for 216 in the 40th over. Matt Hansen, in his 100th ‘A’ grade game for Aldgate, starred with 5/32 from 7.4 overs, while Woollard took 4/61 (9). Mt Lofty moved up to second spot on the HCA ladder after a high-scoring seven-wicket win over Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Cherry Gardens on Saturday. The home side batted first with Adam Shearwood (18) and Aaron Thompson putting on 48 for the first wicket. Thompson was joined by Lachlan Knight with this pair adding 92 runs for the second wicket before Thompson was dismissed for 72 from 90 balls (10 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Tom Watton chipped in with 23 (29 balls), but it was Knight who was the star of the show. The SCIB number three made 104 from 95 balls (11 x 4’s, 1 x 6) to lift his side to 6/233 from their 45 overs. Josh Mitchell (2/29) and Anthony Jennings (2/38) were the multiple wicket takers for the Redcaps. Mitchell fired Mt Lofty to a quick start in the run chase with a hard-hitting 41 from 23 balls (8 x 4’s, 1 x 6), while Adam Carthew (37), Nick Justice (23) and Jordan Neis-Beer (19 not out) made solid contributions. But it was Redcaps skipper Josh Healey who starred with 100 not out from just 70 balls (15 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) to see his side over the line in the 38th over. It was the second century of the season for Healey and he now leads the HCA batting aggregate with 317 runs at 79.25. Knight backed up his century with 2/40 (8) for Scott Creek Ironbank. Kangarilla won their second game of the season after a five-wicket victory over Uraidla at Yaroona Oval. The home side batted first and were in big trouble as they slipped to 6/72 in the 24th over. Jaxon Lynn was joined by Harrison Burgess to add 71 runs for the seventh wicket before Lynn departed for 55 (71 balls). Burgess continued on to make 45 not out (60), while Declan Bell whacked a quickfire 31 (22) to lift the Echidnas to 7/204 from their 45 overs. Ryan Williams was the pick of the Nairne bowlers with figures of 3/16 (9) and he was well supported by Luke Stephenson (2/35). The Razorbacks got off to a good start with Nick Melvin (48) and Tom Fiebiger (45) adding 76 runs for the first wicket. Handy contributions from Zac Llewellyn (27), Jack May (27), Luke Timmins (17) and Brodie Clarke (16 not out) saw Nairne over the line with six balls to spare. Josh Fidler (2/12), Ryan Watt (2/22), Connor Burgess (2/27) and Harrison Burgess (2/45) were the multiple wicket takers for Wistow. Strathalbyn moved within half a game of the top-four after a nail-biting one-wicket win against Woodside yesterday. Woodside batted first with Luke Langmead (38) and Brad Collins (26) the only batsmen in the top-six to reach double figures as the Warriors struggled to 9/118 in the 36th over. Liam Moore (17) and Shane Druwitt (27 not out) then combined for a 47-run 10th wicket stand to lift the Warriors to a total of 165. Brayden Gaiter was the star with the ball for Strathalbyn with 4/13 from his nine overs, while Lachlan Cutting (2/33) and Nick Williams (2/37) were the other multiple wicket takers. The Stallions were in strife in their run chase at 6/56, before Williams (21) joined opening batsman Luke Cousins to add 42 runs for the seventh wicket. But when the ninth wicket fell with 45 runs still required, it looked like Woodside had the win in their hands. Cousins was still there and he was joined by number 11 Austin Greaves as they edged towards victory with five runs needed from the last over. Cousins proved to be the hero as he struck a boundary with three balls left to get his side over the line. Greaves finished on 16 not out (19), while Cousins carried his bat for 71 not out (119) and now has 388 runs at 64.67 this season. Jeremy Druwitt (3/21) and Liam Moore (3/34) were the leading wicket takers for the Warriors. Lobethal bounced back after a loss last week with a crushing 279-run win in the grand final rematch against Hahndorf. The Tigers batted first and after losing Mitch Weeks early on, they consolidated through a 96-run stand between Tanner King and Jeremy Hackett before Hackett departed for 30 (34). King made a quickfire 79 from just 47 balls with his innings containing five fours and seven sixes. There was more pain to come with Daniel Norsworthy (25 not out), Steve Huxter (29), Sam Graeber (30) and Matt Martin (50) putting the Magpies to the sword. However, the top scorer for Lobethal was left-hander Sam Martin who made 86 from 64 balls (10 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Ty Watson was by far the best of the Hahndorf bowlers with 2/25 from his nine-over spell. Hahndorf were never in the run chase with Greg Hassold (30) and Daniel Jenner (21) the only batsmen to reach double figures as the home side were bundled out for just 88 in the 20th over. Weeks was the star with the ball for the Tigers as he snared 6/12 from 5.1 overs, while Matt Martin took 2/17 (5).Langhorne Creek won their third game in a row with a seven-wicket victory over Bremer Callington at Langhorne Creek. The visitors batted first with Jai McMurtrie and Michael Kudra putting on an excellent opening stand worth 113 runs before McMurtrie went for 57 (72). Kudra went on to top score with 90 from 111 balls (11 x 4’s) as the Cobras posted a competitive 7/222 from their 45 overs. Adam Clements (2/30), Daniel Kropp (2/30) and Ben Warren (2/45) were the leading wicket takers for Langhorne Creek. The home side were in early trouble in the run chase as they slipped to 3/53 and the Cobras were well on top. Skipper Adam Clements was joined by Warren and this pair set about chasing down the Cobras total with an unbroken stand of 174 to see their side home in the 35th over. Clements finished with 83 not out (77 balls), while Warren made 72 not out (73 balls). Strathalbyn Panthers going strong in Hills Softball
Strathalbyn Panthers going strong in Hills Softball

10 November 2025, 12:30 AM

A Grade (Strathalbyn v Pirates) Softball was not a summer sport last Friday night, with the game played in wet, cold and windy conditions. Results in games like this are largely dependent on pitching with the win going to Strath's Tessa Norris, giving only 2 walks, in very difficult conditions. Strath were able to bring in 17 runs in the hour of play without conceding a run against. Credit to the Pirates team for staying positive throughout the November winter blast. Bring on the sun next week.Under 14 (Strathalbyn v Redsox)Strathalbyn took on Redsox Red in chilly conditions. Redsox first at bat only saw five batters thanks to the solid pitching work of Imogen Bake, but a home run to Zaxton Sward ensured two runs scored. Strath batters were patient and earned walks to bring in five runs. Another home run for Sward in the second was the highlight as again Strath used their aggressive base running to bring in more runs. Finishing on uneven innings, the score reverted back to Strathalbyn 11 defeating Redsox 9. C Grade (Strathalbyn v Pirates)The Pirates faced a strong Strathalbyn batting line-up on Diamond 1. Pitcher Jess Lovegrove and catcher Kerry Lawson settled the game after Strath brought home three early runs, with Kerry taking a sharp pop-up and Danni-elle Hupfeld firing to Sue Stewart for the final out. Sue led off with a walk before Monica Spriggs struck out two batters, but Kerry’s solid hit to left and Danni-elle’s big double scored two runs to close the gap to 3–2. Strath responded with more strong batting, though Leonie Beattie’s throw from shortstop and a sharp fly catch helped limit the damage. The Pirates rallied in the second with a two-down surge with three batters reaching base and scoring bringing the score to 6–5. Strath’s first three hitters of the third reached base and scored again before Jess collected her first strikeout and Danni-elle made an easy catch. The Pirates were shut down quickly that inning as Strath extended their lead 9–5. Fired up, Danni-elle made another clean out at first, Jess added her second strikeout, and then fielded a comeback ball to end the frame. Elsie Bloffwitch led the final inning with a hit to centre, and disciplined batting loaded the bases for Kerry’s powerful drive to left. The Pirates stormed home, after trailing most of the game, with seven late runs to clinch a 12–9 victory.
