Great Southern Cricket Association season preview

11 October 2019, 2:02 AM

The Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) season gets underway tomorrow with eight teams vying for ‘A’ grade premiership glory. There are also eight teams in ‘B’ and ‘C’ grade while nine teams are involved in the one-day competition which commences on October 19. Senior Colts and Junior Colts competitions will commence on 19 October while the Under 12’s and Under 10’s start on 25 October.Reigning premier Noarlunga will be one of the favourites for the flag again and has picked up 2016/17 premiership player Sam Trapolino who has returned from Yankalilla. Cameron Bullard has returned to SACA Premier Cricket and Sam Carlyle is having a break this season. The Shoes have good depth in bowling with skipper Jason Scarff, David Scarff and Matthew Ray combining for 102 wickets last season while Jason Scarff and Anthony Burgess made over 1,300 runs between them. Willunga won the premiership in 2017/18 and were runners-up last year and will be a big threat this season with all-rounder Simon Roberts a key to their success again. Since arriving at Willunga at the start of the 2017/18 season, Roberts has taken 84 wickets at the miserly average of just 8.56 to go with 740 runs at 46.25. He was ably supported by Luke Goldner last season who snared 26 wickets and Luke Harding who was ultra consistent in racking up 532 runs for the campaign.Goolwa finished clear in second spot at the end of the minor round last season but sadly went out of the finals race in ‘straight’ sets as they could only muster scores of 110 and 109 in their two finals. The Magpies will be super keen to put the end of last season behind them and get their campaign off to a winning start as they travel to Noarlunga in round one. Victor Robertson and Andrew Evans combined for over 900 runs last season and will again be the keys with the bat. Perennial grand finalist Encounter Bay were knocked out in the Semi-Final last year by Noarlunga, ending an amazing run of six consecutive appearances in the final game of the season. Cameron Lintern will be the key to their chances of returning to the Grand Final, coming off one of the best seasons of his distinguished career where he scored a whopping 678 runs to go with a handy 23 wickets.McLaren Districts has made steady improvement over the past two seasons winning seven games after just one victory in 2016/17. The Crushers will look to build on that improvement this season and hope for a return to ‘A’ grade finals for the first time since 2015/16. Port Elliot hasn’t played finals since 2014/15 but they’ve been around the mark recently with five wins in each of the past two seasons. Veteran seam bowler Simon Donaldson returns from Bridgewater and Jesse Consalvo will take over as ‘A’ grade captain.Mount Compass have had a busy off-season with a turf wicket being installed at Burgess Oval and they will be buoyed by the return of Michael Tucker from Yankalilla and Aaron Dalitz from Uraidla. Paul Barrett has been reappointed as ‘A’ grade skipper. Myponga return to ‘A’ grade competition for the first time since the 2014/15 season at the expense of Yankalilla who will play in the ‘B’ grade this season. Myponga finished minor premiers in ‘B’ grade last season before losing a nail-biter of a Grand Final by one wicket to McLaren Districts. This week’s ‘A’ grade fixtures are 40-overs per side one-dayers (home team named first)…..Noarlunga v GoolwaMyponga v McLaren DistrictsEncounter Bay v WillungaPort Elliot v Mount Compass

The Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12 competitions will commence from Friday 18 October.Aldgate are the reigning ‘A’ grade premiers after a nail-biting one-wicket victory over Meadows in the Grand Final. Meadows were gunning for an incredible 10th straight title but were edged out in a last ball thriller by the ‘Gaters’ who claimed their first ‘A’ Grade flag in 15 years. Aldgate has kept the nucleus of their premiership team together and will again be led by dual ‘Cricketer of the Year’ Jake Turnbull. Meadows has been bolstered by the return of Brad Dawe after a season at Sturt District Cricket Club and Dawe has been appointed skipper as Rohan Reid steps aside after a highly successful tenure. The Bulldogs boast a powerful batting lineup and will once again be right in the hunt for the flag.Stirling have made the semi-finals for the past two years and will look to go a step further this season. The Eagles have Jacob Gonzalez returning after a year off and have picked up Kosta Sinodinos from Sturt. Mount Lofty also made the semi-finals last season and will go into the 2019/20 season with a familiar lineup led by Jordan Neis-Beer, who led the Redcaps batting last season with 382 runs. He will look for support from all-rounder James Kittel-Neill and opening bowler Adam Carthew. Flagstaff Hill missed the finals last season for the first time since moving to the HCA back in 2014/15 and they’ll be looking for sharp improvement during this campaign. Gun all-rounder Kyle Petty will again lead the Falcons and he’ll be looking for support from the talented Will Goulding and the ever reliable Jacob Lemon. Bridgewater made a good fist of their first season back in A1 competition after a six-season absence from the top flight and just missed out on a finals berth on the last day of the season. Veteran bowler Simon Donaldson has returned to play with Port Elliot while youngster Jamie Drew is recovering from a back injury. Jackson Hooper will captain the Raiders again and they have been buoyed by the return from Mypolonga of Adam Eckerman who last played for the club in the 2011/12 season when Bridgewater reached the Grand Final. Kangarilla has steadily improved over the past two seasons and are well led by all-rounder's Che Martinsen and Steven Featherstone. The club has also been busy in the search for recruits and have signed a number of new players including Cole Davy from Southern Districts who made his ‘A’ grade debut last season for the Stingrays. This week’s A1 fixtures are 40-overs per side one-dayers (home team named first)…..Bridgewater v AldgateMeadows v KangarillaStirling v Flagstaff HillMt Lofty has the bye

Tough start for the Stingrays in SACA Premier Cricket
Tough start for the Stingrays in SACA Premier Cricket

08 October 2019, 3:33 AM

Reigning premier Kensington has proved too strong for Southern Districts in the opening round of the SACA 1st Grade competition at Parkinson Oval on Saturday. Southern Districts won the toss and decided to bat first on a hot and overcast morning. Unfortunately the Stingrays lost both openers early to be sitting precariously at 2/8. Brendan McCormack (24) and Matthew Sugg (12) launched a rescue mission and moved the score along to 50 before both players were dismissed as the Stingrays slumped to 4/50. Victorian recruit Sunam Gautam (46) was joined by the experienced David Sboro (61) as the two middle-order batsmen started to get Southern Districts back into the game with a fine 89-run stand for the fifth wicket. Once Gautam was dismissed, Sboro continued on to post an excellent half century and he got some welcome support from the returning Tom Joraslafsky (24 n.o.) as the Stingrays lifted their total to a respectable 8/209 from their 50 overs. Major wicket-takers for the Browns were leg-spinner Lloyd Pope (3/43) and David Grant (2/49).The Stingrays needed early wickets against a strong Kensington batting lineup but it wasn't to be as Jake Brown (43) and Eastern Suburbs (NSW) recruit Henry Hunt (79 n.o.) put on 74 for the first wicket. John Dalton (73) and Hunt then took the Browns within sight of victory with an excellent 128-run second wicket stand as the winning runs were knocked off with 13.2 overs remaining. The wicket takers for Southern Districts were Gautam 1/38 (10) and Trent Riddle 1/58 (7).The Stingrays will look to bounce back next Saturday when they face Northern Districts at Bice Oval. The game is a one-day fixture (50 overs) starting at 10.30am.Scores:1st Grade: Kensington 2/210 defeated Southern Districts 8/209 by eight wickets2nd Grade: Kensington 3/238 defeated Southern Districts 136 all out by 102 runs3rd Grade: Kensington 4/142 defeated Southern Districts 8/140 by six wickets4th Grade: Kensington 6/285 defeated Southern Districts 117 all out by 168 runs

SACA Premier CricketSouthern Districts Stingrays have been very busy in the ‘off-season’ with several key appointments and some excellent recruits that will call Bice Oval home for 2019/20. In a huge coup for the Stingrays, former West Indies international, Carl Hooper, has been appointed High Performance Coach. Hooper played 102 tests and 227 one-day internationals for the Windies and he will bring a wealth of experience to Southern Districts. The club has brought in some quality recruits including Sunam Gautam from Greenvale Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier League. The Stingrays will also have access to Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy players from the West Indies and the United Kingdom.“We are approaching the 2019/20 season filled with excitement due to a number of factors including the appointment of Carl Hooper as our High Performance Coach and the re-signing of former state cricketer Hannah Sampson as Women’s Coach,” said club President, Grant Lovelock. “We have had excellent numbers at pre-season training with a number of past players returning to the club including Lewis Hatchett, Ben Twohig, Trent Riddle, Blake Bailey, Tom Joraslafsky and Dean Miller.”Hannah Sampson will again head up the Women’s Cricket program after a very successful 2018/19 campaign. The Women’s 2nd grade team had a fantastic Grand Final victory over Adelaide University while the 1st grade side finished runner-up to Sturt after pulling off a stunning semi-final victory over Kensington. The club is confident of a strong campaign from the Stingrays women in 2019/20.The club has a new hard-working committee with fresh faces and new ideas. They have implemented an active sponsorship campaign to support all areas of the club with operating costs associated with ground hire, cricket equipment and coaching resources for player development.Southern Districts Fixtures (Saturday 5/10/19)Men’s 1st Grade (10.00am) v Kensington (Parkinson Oval) Men’s 2nd Grade (10.00am) v Kensington (Bice Oval)Men’s 3rd Grade (12.00pm) v Kensington (Col Waite Oval)Men’s 4th Grade (12.00pm) v Kensington (Adelaide High School Oval 1)Southern Districts Fixtures (Sunday 6/10/19)Women’s 1st Grade T20 (10.30am) v Northern Districts (Salisbury Oval) Women’s 2nd Grade T20 (1.00pm) v Kensington (Bice Oval)NB: Junior fixtures for Under 14’s and Under 16’s commence on Saturday 12 October.

Cove Cobras Football Club evicted from home ground
Cove Cobras Football Club evicted from home ground

26 September 2019, 1:21 PM

The Cove Football Club was advised Wednesday morning that in a confidential meeting on Tuesday night, Marion Council passed a resolution to terminate their occupancy at the Cove Sports and Community Club within 30 days.Cove Football Club are working with the SANFL and the SFL to explore all options to challenge this decision.Marion Council statementMarion Council has cancelled the CCFC’s tenancy of the Cove Sports and Community Club. The CCFC have until midnight, 25 October 2019 to vacate the ratepayer-owned premises. The independent investigation concluded:Inappropriate behaviour, disrespectful language and intimidating conduct by numerous CCFC members and associates has resulted in other sporting clubs not using the facility because they feel unwelcome or unsafe.Insulting sexist language directed at a female staff member and sexual harassment of female netball players. The CCFC has a sense of entitlement and ‘ownership’ of the facility, with other clubs experiencing territorial or unwelcome acts when they attempt to use it.The behaviour is widespread and part of a club culture that is condoned and, in some cases, practised by some senior members of the CCFC.Council made the decision to cancel the CCFC’s tenancy after considering the report at its meeting of 24 September 2019.Cove Football Club statementThe Cove Football Club and it’s volunteers have worked tirelessly since it was founded in 1984 to create a strong and successful football club for the Hallett Cove and surrounding areas. We are devastated by the news that the City of Marion is terminating our lease at the Cove Sports and Community Club. This is a difficult and emotional time in our club’s 35-year history and the council’s decision will have a far-reaching impact on our club and the community at Hallett Cove. We do not believe we have had a fair opportunity to respond to the Council and our committee is working extremely hard to ensure the right outcome is achieved and that our great club can continue.Of all football participation within the City of Marion, 15% is played at the Cove Football Club. The majority of these players – 72% in fact – are aged between 5 and 14.The Cove Football Club has enjoyed sustained growth, increasing our player numbers by 11.5% in season 2019 alone. We have continued to attract new female players to the club and our female program has more than doubled in player numbers in the past three seasons. It is these junior and female players who will suffer the greatest loss if the Cove Football Club no longer has a future at the Cove Sports and Community Club.Quite simply, we have nowhere to go. There are no spare ovals or facilities in the Southern region to accommodate the Cove Football Club. Ovals are already at capacity and losing the Cove Sports and Community Club will have a severe and negative impact on football as a whole in the region. An information night for members, players and their families will be held this Friday (27th September) at 6:30pm at the South Adelaide Football Club and we believe this will be a true indication of the impact of this decision by Council.

Four on the trot for Flagstaff Hill
Four on the trot for Flagstaff Hill

22 September 2019, 8:31 AM

Flagstaff Hill has caused a major boilover to win their fourth consecutive Southern Football League (SFL) premiership with a 33-point win over the previously undefeated Noarlunga. The Falcons came into the game as underdogs, having lost all three encounters against the Shoes this season by an average of 53 points, including a comprehensive 44-point loss in the second semi-final. The opening term was tight and tough with Flagstaff Hill taking a six-point lead into quarter time. The Falcons took over in the second quarter kicking five unanswered goals to take a commanding 38-point lead into the long break.Noarlunga weren’t going to give up on their season and hit back hard in the third term kicking four goals to one and reducing the margin back to 21 points at the last change and it was ‘game on’. Flagstaff Hill would not be denied their shot at the ‘4-peat’ and drew upon all their finals experience to kick away again in the final term with three goals to one to run out winners 12.9 (81) to 7.6 (48).Mark Hollis with three and Max Renfrey and Sam Smith each with two goals were the multiple goalkickers for Flagstaff Hill. Nick Mott and Terry Milera kicked two goals each for Noarlunga. Sam Tharaldsen, David Kearsley, Hollis, Renfrey and Daniel Webb were best for the Falcons while Sam Hamilton, Joel Brown, Ben Goldfinch and Josh Thewlis were named in the best players for Noarlunga. In other grades Noarlunga defeated Christies Beach by nine points in the Reserves, Happy Valley won the Under 17.5 flag after a 15-point victory over Flagstaff Hill and  Reynella won by 12 points over a gallant Christies Beach in the Under 15’s.

Langhorne Creek go back-to-back
Langhorne Creek go back-to-back

22 September 2019, 1:54 AM

Langhorne Creek have won back-to-back premierships after defeating Willunga by 32 points at McLaren Vale yesterday. It was the 11th consecutive victory for the Hawks who appeared in danger of missing the finals when they had a 5-5 record after 10 rounds.Fine weather greeted the sides with a breeze, probably worth a couple of goals, going to the Northern end. It was a tight opening term with Langhorne Creek kicking with the breeze but they could only manage an inaccurate 2.6 to Willunga’s 1.3 to take a nine point lead into quarter time. Willunga made better use of the breeze in the second stanza but they were also inaccurate kicking 3.5 to Langhorne Creek’s 2.3 to reduce the margin to a solitary point at half-time in favour of the reigning premier Hawks. After a tight opening half Langhorne Creek took over in the third term with best on ground James Sellar kicking four goals for the term and by late in the quarter, Creek’s had stretched their lead out to 41 points before a Willunga goal on the siren reduced the margin to 35 points at the last change. It was a premiership winning term by the Hawks as they kicked 8 goals to the Demons three. The Demons needed a minor miracle and they pushed hard in the first 10 minutes but that man Sellar, now in defence, took some telling marks and repelled many of Willunga’s attacks. The Demons did kick a couple of goals to get the margin back to 26 points and they had a bit of momentum. Enter Lachie McGregor who had been well held by James Collier throughout the day to take the ‘Mark of the Day’ running back with the flight of the ball in the forward pocket about 15 metres out from goal. He duly slotted home the sealer with a perfect checkside kick right in front of the large Hawks throng. Willunga continued to push but Langhorne Creek prevailed 14.13 (97) to 9.11 (65) to notch their seventh GSFL ‘A’ grade premiership.Sellar kicked five goals and was best on ground for Langhorne Creek. He was ably supported by Tom Derham, Jarrod Kellock, Ben Arbon and Curtis Perrey. Daniel Bass kicked three goals for Willunga while Brett Miegel, Collier, Tyson Hoffmann, Nick Scanlan and Sam Tregenza were named best for the vanquished Demons. In other grades McLaren defeated Willunga by eight points in the Reserves, Victor Harbor had a big 78-point victory over McLaren in the Senior Colts and Willunga won an extra time thriller over Strathalbyn by seven points in the Junior Colts.

Noarlunga and Flagstaff Hill square-off in SFL decider
Noarlunga and Flagstaff Hill square-off in SFL decider

20 September 2019, 3:37 AM

Undefeated minor premier Noarlunga will play three-time reigning premier Flagstaff Hill in the Southern Football League (SFL) Grand Final on Saturday at Flinders University Stadium (South Adelaide Football Club). Noarlunga last won the premiership in 2014 while Flagstaff Hill has won the past three flags, including a 37-point victory over Noarlunga in the 2017 decider. The two teams have clashed on three occasions in 2019 with Noarlunga winning on each occasion by 62 points, 52 points and then by 44 points in the second semi-final. Flagstaff Hill bounced back from that loss to grind out a tough 10-point victory over Christies Beach in the Preliminary Final last week.Noarlunga have been imperious this season winning all 17 matches by an average of 93 points. To underline Noarlunga’s dominance, the Shoes have only conceded a miserly 39 points per game! Flagstaff Hill has only lost three games in 2019, all to Noarlunga. The Falcons only trailed by 17 points at half-time of the second semi-final so that should give them some confidence that they can take it up to the Shoes.Noarlunga have stars all over the park led by 2018 & 2019 Mail Medalist Nicholas Mott who has kicked 58 goals. He has been well supported by Reece Martell with 56 goals and Terry Milera who has slotted home 40 majors. Nathan Schulz and Troy Johnson have also had excellent season’s for Noarlunga. Flagstaff Hill have shared their goals around with six players kicking 20 or more goals with Sam Smith leading the way with 35 followed by Daniel Webb with 33 goals. David Kearsley, Sam Tharaldsen and Brad Patterson will have to continue their excellent season’s to give their team any hope of pulling off a major upset.Despite the Falcons finals pedigree It’s hard to go past the Shoes after the dominant season they’ve had. Noarlunga by 21 points.

Reigning premier Langhorne Creek take on minor premier Willunga in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) Grand Final at McLaren Vale tomorrow. These two clubs have won 11 premierships between them since 2001 and this will be the seventh time they’ve met in the decider with the ledger set at three wins each.Langhorne Creek won their way through to the Grand Final with a tough nine-point win in the second semi-final over Willunga. It was the 10th consecutive victory for the Hawks after they started the season slowly to have a 5-5 record after 10 rounds. The Demons bounced back from that loss to defeat Mount Compass by 20 points in the Preliminary Final last week after trailing by 32 points at half-time.Willunga were ranked number one in defence during the minor round, conceding just 63 points per game while Langhorne Creek were ranked number two in attack, scoring 103 points per game. There are great match-ups all over the ground starting with the ruck duel where the Hawks’ James Sellar takes on the Demons’ Mail Medalist Daniel Bass. Whoever wins this battle will go a long way towards their side winning the flag. Both sides have dangerous forwards and they both have an even spread of goalkickers rather than relying on one or two players to kick them a winning score. Willunga have eight players with 20 goals or more this season with Scott Hunt leading the way with 30 majors. Langhorne Creek have six players with 20 or more majors with Jarrod Kellock on 46 their leading goalkicker. Both teams have excellent defenders with James Collier of Willunga and Tom Derham of Langhorne Creek having outstanding seasons. It could be a low scoring affair as it was in the second semi-final where just 18 goals were kicked but the Hawks do have an ‘X-factor’ and his name is Lachy McGregor. McGregor only played five games in the minor round where he kicked 15 goals. In the second semi-final he was the difference between the two teams kicking five goals and being named best on ground. This game has all the ingredients to be an absolute classic. It’s a tough one to tip but I’m going for Langhorne Creek to go back-to-back and win a thriller by seven points to wrap up a great season.

Willunga pull off huge comeback to book Grand Final spot

Great Southern Football League - Preliminary FinalMinor premier Willunga has staged a remarkable second half comeback against Mount Compass to reach the Great Southern Football League Grand Final. After trailing by 32 points at half-time, Willunga ran wild in the third term kicking 11.4 to 0.0 before closing out the game with a 20-point victory, 19.11 (125) to 16.9 (105).The first quarter was tight with Willunga holding a slender five-point lead at the first change before Mount Compass came out firing in the second term to kick nine goals to three and the Bulldogs appeared to have one paw in the Grand Final. The Demons were staring down the barrel of an inglorious straight sets exit but they exploded out of their rooms at Yankalilla after half-time to slam on an amazing 11 goals to turn for home with an unbelievable 38 point lead. Mount Compass tried hard in the final quarter kicking four goals to one but the damage had been done as Willunga moved through to Saturday’s Grand Final against reigning premier Langhorne Creek at McLaren Vale.Willunga had nine different goalkickers with Sam Renney, Daniel Bass, Billy Cook and Scott Hunt leading the way with three goals each. Tom Pinyon was again the shining light for Mount Compass with seven goals, taking his season tally to an amazing 129 goals. Willunga’s best were Brett Miegel, Sean Beath, Craig Nelson, Tyson Hoffmann and Cameron McDonald. The Bulldogs were best served by Tom Corbett, Shane Heatley, Pinyon, Tim Green and Dylan Bolton.
