Great Southern Football League - Round 17Willunga has hung on to top spot with a thrilling one-point victory over Victor Harbor at home on Saturday. The Demons jumped out the blocks to hold a 23-point lead at the first change. The Kangaroos hit back hard in the second term to trail by just four points at the long break before they came out firing after half-time, kicking six goals to two in the third quarter to turn for home with a handy 21 point lead. With top spot on the line, Willunga attacked from the start of the last stanza kicking 4.5 to 1.1 in the final term to win 14.10 (94) to 14.9 (93). Sean Beath and Daniel Lee kicked three goals for the winners while for Victor, Sam Basham took his season tally to 67 with another five majors. Best for the Demons were big man Daniel Bass, Cameron Hutchens and Lachlan Scott while for the courageous Kangaroos, Ryan Fletcher, Sam Basham and Michael Ross were major contributors.Langhorne Creek are just percentage behind third placed Victor Harbor after a convincing 78-point home victory over Myponga-Sellicks. The Hawks extended their lead at every break to win 19.10 (124) to 7.4 (46). Coby Helyar kicked five goals for Langhorne Creek in a best on ground display while Simon Phillips played a lone hand up forward for the Mudlarks with four goals while Damien Hill continued his fine season to be named best for Myponga-Sellicks.Mount Compass kept their chances of winning the minor premiership alive with a percentage boosting 113-point victory at Goolwa-Port Elliot. It was a tight opening to the game with scores level at quarter time at 1.1 (7) each. The Bulldogs exploded after the first break kicking 20 goals to four from that point on to win 21.20 (146) to 5.3 (33). The star for Mount Compass was Tom Pinyon who kicked 11 goals to bring up the magical ‘ton’ with one minor round game plus finals to come. Pinyon has kicked 502 goals in the GSFL ‘A’ grade competition since 2012! He was understandably named best player for the Bulldogs. For the Magpies, James Fry played a lone hand up forward with four goals and was named as their best player.McLaren has all but assured itself of finals action after a 17.8 (110) to 14.3 (87) win at Yankalilla. It was a high standard contest with accurate goal-kicking the highlight. The Eagles led at every change by eight, nine and 16 points before kicking six goals to five in the final term to win by 23 points. James Grimley was a star up forward for McLaren with seven goals while Jed Durdin kicked four goals for Yankalilla. Double chance up for grabs
Double chance up for grabs

16 August 2019, 9:54 AM

Hills Football League Division 2 - Round 18 previewThe final round of the HFL Division Two competition is here and there’s a couple of very important games to determine the finals makeup. The match of the day sees Bridgewater-Callington host the reigning premier Ironbank Cherry Gardens. The Raiders are clinging onto third spot by percentage from Gumeracha and need a win to guarantee the double chance. The Thunderers were brought back down to earth last week going down to undefeated Kersbrook so they’ll be looking to bounce back before their Qualifying Final date next Saturday. It should be a high quality clash at Callington in fine conditions. My tip...Bridgewater-Callington.Gumeracha has the chance to snatch third spot on the ladder and with it, the all important double chance if they can defeat Kangarilla at home and Bridgewater-Callington lose. The Magpies have been in great form recently having won eight of their last 10 games while Kangarilla will be buoyed by a gutsy win last week over finals bound Macclesfield. My tip...GumerachaMeadows will look to finish their season in style by winning their second game in a row when they host Birdwood at Meadows Oval. Birdwood have had a disappointing season with just five wins after 12 wins in 2018. Both sides are playing for pride in this one. My tip...BirdwoodIt could be a long day for winless Torrens Valley as they travel to undefeated Kersbrook for the final minor round. The Brookers have been imperious this season with a 15-0 record and an average winning margin of 84 points. It’s been another long season for the Lions but hopefully they can put up a show in their last game for 2019. My tip...KersbrookMacclesfield has the bye.Ladder (after 17 rounds)Kersbrook 30 points, Ironbank Cherry Gardens 26, Bridgewater-Callington 20, Gumeracha 20, Macclesfield 16, Kangarilla 10, Birdwood 10, Meadows 4, Torrens Valley 0

Southern Football League - Round 17 previewThe top five is settled with two rounds remaining in the Southern Football League. Noarlunga has won the minor premiership with Flagstaff Hill and Christies Beach securing the all important double chance, while Port Noarlunga and Reynella round out the major round qualifiers. The match of the round gives us an early finals glimpse at the two main challengers to the undefeated Noarlunga when Christies Beach host reigning premier Flagstaff  Hill. These two sides will square off in the Qualifying Final at Aldinga on Saturday 31 August so it will be interesting to see how much each club shows the other. Last time they met back in round eight it was a comfortable 57-point win to Flagstaff Hill. It’s a very hard one to tip as both sides have been in excellent recent form. My tip...Flagstaff Hill.In other matches Port Noarlunga travel to Cove and should have too much firepower for the Cobras as the Cockle Divers prepare for finals. My tip...Port Noarlunga.Reynella will look to bounce back after a hard fought loss to Port Noarlunga last week when they host Happy Valley. The Vikings slim finals chances were extinguished last week when they lost to Morphett Vale so they’ll be playing for pride. My tip...Reynella.Aldinga will attempt to climb off the bottom of the ladder when they host Morphett Vale. The Sharks have had a couple of tough week’s taking on competition powerhouses in Noarlunga and Flagstaff Hill while the Emus clung on for a 1-point win over Happy Valley last week. My tip...Morphett ValeNoarlunga has the byeLadder (after 16 rounds)Noarlunga 30 points, Flagstaff Hill 24, Christies Beach 24, Port Noarlunga 18, Reynella 12, Morphett Vale 8, Happy Valley 8, Cove 2, Aldinga 2

Great Southern Football League - Round 17 previewIt’s a very tight season in the GSFL and with just two rounds to go there’s only three points between first and fourth position on the ladder. The match of the round sees a top of the ladder clash between Willunga and Victor Harbor. Willunga reclaimed top spot last week with a big win over Goolwa-Port Elliot while Victor slipped up with a 29-point home loss to McLaren. The Demons have the most frugal defence in the league, conceding just 63 points a game in 2019. They’ll have to be on their game as the Kangaroos have a potent forward line with Sam Basham (62 goals), Luke Davey (52) and playing-coach Clint Alleway (25) key targets. Willunga will have home ground advantage which might be enough to get them over the line. My tip...Willunga.In other games Mount Compass will look to consolidate their position in the top three with a win at Goolwa-Port Elliot. The Bulldogs let a handy lead slip last week against Langhorne Creek and they’ll be hungry to atone for that loss. The Magpies are playing for pride after copping a 122-point hiding from Willunga last week. My tip...Mount Compass.Strathalbyn face a tricky trip to Encounter Bay needing a win to keep their slim finals hopes alive. The Roosters sit a game out of the top five and need to win their last two games and hope fifth placed McLaren slip up. The home side will be searching for a third consecutive win as they look to finish the season strongly. My tip...Strathalbyn.McLaren travel to Yankalilla knowing a win would all but assure them of a finals spot in 2019. The Eagles had an excellent victory over Victor Harbor last week to keep them in fifth spot. Yankalilla have shown improvement this season winning five games (compared to two in 2018) and could provide an upset. McLaren have too much on the line to let this one slip though I think. My tip...McLaren.Reigning premier Langhorne Creek have put themselves in a position to gain the all important double chance after a come from behind win against Mount Compass last week. The Hawks host winless Myponga-Sellicks and should have a comfortable victory. My tip...Langhorne Creek.Ladder (after 16 rounds)Willunga 25 points, Victor Harbor 24, Mount Compass 23, Langhorne Creek 22, McLaren 20, Strathalbyn 18, Encounter Bay 14, Yankalilla 10, Goolwa-Port Elliot 4, Myponga-Sellicks 0

The victory keeps the Roosters in sixth spot, just one win behind McLaren with two rounds remaining. The home side was always in control taking a 40-point lead into half-time. A further seven goals to three in the second half saw the final score blow out to 17.7 (109) to 6.9 (45). Ben Simounds was a star up forward for the Roosters with seven goals to take his season tally to 48. Hills Football League Division 2 - Round 17 previewThe two best teams in the competition will battle it out in the Grand Final rematch at Ironbank Oval in round 17 action this weekend. The reigning premiers Ironbank match up against last year’s runner-up Kersbrook. The Brookers are yet to lose a match this season and have an average winning margin of 88 points. The Thunderers only loss of the season was against Kersbrook back in round eight when they were humbled to the tune of 51 points after the Brookers unleashed an eight goal to nil final term. Ironbank have plenty of avenues to goal led by the clever Adam Shearwood with 39 majors for the season. He should get plenty of supply on the small Ironbank Oval from players such as Joel van Paridon and Will Muirden. Kersbrook has a very even spread of goalkickers with six players with 20 goals or more in their lineup, led by Charlie Graeber on 40. He is ably assisted up forward by the experienced Matt Gardner (36 goals) while Lachlan Peter and Flynn Cameron are having excellent seasons. I expect this game to be a lot closer than back in round eight and I’m tipping a (minor) upset. My tip...Ironbank Cherry Gardens. In other games, Gumeracha has the chance to move level in third spot with Bridgewater-Callington (bye this round) as they make the short trip down the road to Birdwood. The Magpies are enjoying an excellent season after just eight wins last season and should have too much class for the Roosters. My tip...Gumeracha.Macclesfield confirmed their finals spot last week with a come-from-behind victory against Birdwood and they’ll take plenty of confidence into their game at Kangarilla. The Double Blues should be fresh after the bye last week but I expect Macclesfield to fine tune their game and take the points as they prepare for finals. My tip...Macclesfield.Meadows will make the long trek north to take on Torrens Valley looking for their second win of the season. Meanwhile the home side will fancy their chances of finally singing the song after a winless 2019. Last time they met Meadows got up by 24 points after a bit of a scare. A very hard game to pick! My tip...Torrens Valley.Bridgewater-Callington has the bye.Ladder (after 16 rounds)Kersbrook 28 points, Ironbank Cherry Gardens 26, Bridgewater-Callington 20, Gumeracha 18, Macclesfield 16, Birdwood 10, Kangarilla 8, Meadows 2, Torrens Valley 0
