Hawks swoop into GSFL Grand Final

Second Semi-Final (Willunga v Langhorne Creek)Reigning premier Langhorne Creek defeated minor premier Willunga by nine points in Saturday’s Second Semi-Final at Myponga to advance to the 2019 Great Southern Football League Grand Final. Langhorne Creek has rattled off 10 consecutive wins to take the competition by storm and are now favourites to secure back-to-back flags. It was a tough and tight contest all day with Willunga leading by one point at quarter time, one point at half-time and two points at the final break as the game was set up for a tense finish. Langhorne Creek got on top in the final term kicking four goals to two to win 10.3 (63) to 8.6 (54). Lachie McGregor, in just his sixth game of the season, was the star for the Hawks kicking five of their 10 goals in a best on ground performance. He was well supported by Tom Derham, Jarrod Kellock, Curtis Perrey and Matthew Dominish. Scott Hunt was the only multiple goalkicker for the Demons with two majors. Sam Tregenza, Daniel Lee, James Collier, Sean Beath and Braden Altus were Willunga’s best. Willunga will need to pick themselves up quickly as they take on Mount Compass at Yankalilla in the Preliminary Final on Saturday.First Semi-Final (Mount Compass v Victor Harbor)Mount Compass has kept their premiership chances alive with a come-from-behind 25-point victory over a gallant Victor Harbor side in the First Semi-Final at Strathalbyn on Sunday. After a tight opening term saw Mount Compass lead by three points, Victor kicked the first five goals of the second quarter to open up a handy 26-point lead halfway through the term and things were looking decidedly shaky for the 2016-17 premiers. The Bulldogs could see their season slipping away but they hit back hard, kicking the last three goals of the first half to go to the long break with momentum and only trailing by nine points. Buoyed by their good finish to the second quarter, Compass came out firing in the third term to kick 8.3 to Victor’s 3.0 to completely turn the game on its head and led by 24 points at the last change before and even final quarter saw Mount Compass win 17.7 (109) to 13.6 (84) to advance to a Preliminary Final showdown with Willunga. The ‘Dynamic Duo’ up forward did all the damage for Mount Compass with Tom Pinyon and Ziggy Vitkunas both booting seven goals for the victors. Pinyon and Vitkunas have now kicked a whopping 203 goals between them for season 2019! Sam Basham kicked three and Clint Alleway two goals for Victor Harbor. Skipper Adam Hunter, Ziggy Vitkunas, Pinyon, Dylan Camac, Tom Corbett and Peter Hoban were best for the Bulldogs while Eljay Connors, Rhys Bartram, Ben Williams, Michael Ross and Jack Lang featured in the best players for the Kangaroos.

Hills Football League (Division 2) - Preliminary FinalKersbrook has won its way into the Hills Football League (Division  2) Grand Final with a 22-point victory over reigning premier Ironbank Cherry Gardens in the Preliminary Final at Callington on Saturday. The Brookers suffered a shock loss to Gumeracha in the Second Semi-Final last week and they had to battle hard to get past a gallant Ironbank Cherry Gardens in a rematch of last year’s Grand Final. After a low scoring and tense first half, Kersbrook led 5.5 to 5.2 and the game was set up for a classic finish. After kicking three goals to two in the third term, Kersbrook turned for home with a 12-point lead. Ironbank Cherry Gardens tried hard in the final stanza but  their premiership defence ended as the game opened up as the minor premier Kersbrook kicked five goals to three to run out winners 13.10 (88) to 10.6 (66). Dillon Harding kicked five goals for the Brookers and Paul James kicked four. Jeremy Johncock booted five goals for the Thunderers and Adam Shearwood kicked two. Both Johncock and Shearwood finished on 48 goals for the season. 2019 Mail Medallist Lachlan Peter was best on ground for Kersbrook and he was ably supported by Jack Mozuras, James, Rob Nicholson and Harding. Ironbank Cherry Gardens was best served by Todd Pfeiffer, James Cross, Johncock, Henry Moss and Joel Van Paridon. Kersbrook will take on Gumeracha in the Grand Final and will be looking to atone for their two-point loss in the Second Semi-Final. Gumeracha are in search of their first ‘A’ grade flag since 1984.

Reigning Premier Cove into SFLW Grand Final
Reigning Premier Cove into SFLW Grand Final

09 September 2019, 4:25 AM

Preliminary Final (Flagstaff Hill v Cove)Reigning premier Cove has booked their spot in the SFLW Grand Final with a commanding 45-point win over Flagstaff Hill in the Preliminary Final at Flagstaff Hill yesterday. The Cobras started their premiership defence slowly winning just one of their first seven games but have played some excellent Football in the back half of the season winning nine of their last 11 matches. Flagstaff Hill finished second at the end of the minor round and needed the double chance after being defeated by minor premier Aldinga in the Second Semi-Final last week. Cove got off to a fast start to lead by 17 points at quarter time and they built on this lead in the second term by adding two more goals to take a very handy 27-point lead into the long break. It was more of the same after the break with Flagstaff Hill struggling to get any momentum and although Cove didn’t add a major in the third term, they still extended their lead out to 30 points at the last change. Two further goals to the Cobras in the final term saw them eventually win 6.11 (47) to 0.2 (2). Felicity Oliver and Samantha Franson each kicked two goals for Cove while Oliver, Lauren Grigg, Dana O’Brien, Franson, Lauren Kenny and Seraphina Moon were named in the best players. For Flagstaff Hill Chloe Meyers, Hannah Griffin and Alana Baker were their best. The Grand Final between Aldinga and Cove will be played at Aldinga Oval on Sunday 15 September at 2.40pm.

Grand Final spot on the line in Southern Football League
Grand Final spot on the line in Southern Football League

Second Semi-Final (2.30pm Saturday 7 September @ Port Noarlunga)Noarlunga puts their undefeated season on the line when they face off against reigning premier Flagstaff Hill for the right to be the first team into the Southern Football League Grand Final. Noarlunga have been untouchable so far this season with an average winning margin of 96 points. This is a rematch of last season’s second semi-final where Flaggies prevailed before Noarlunga suffered a shock loss to Reynella in the Preliminary Final. Flagstaff Hill has only lost two games this season, both to Noarlunga by 52 & 62 points. The Shoes have so many scoring options with six players kicking more than 25 goals with Nick Mott leading the way with 58 goals. The Falcons have been in great recent form winning seven games on the trot and they will rely heavily on their defence which has only conceded 45 points per game. It’s hard to go past the Shoes though. My tip...Noarlunga by 21 points.First Semi-Final (2.30pm Sunday 8 September @ Christies Beach)Christies Beach will look to bounce back from a disappointing 60-point loss in the Qualifying Final to Flagstaff Hill as they take on a confident Port Noarlunga outfit, fresh from a comprehensive 41-point win in the Elimination Final win over Reynella. Christies Beach won both clashes between the two teams in the minor round but they were tight games with margins of 17 and 10 points. Port Noarlunga will need to keep the league leading goalkicker Blake Carter in check as Flagstaff Hill did last week. Carter has kicked 12 goals in the two clashes between the two sides this season. Port Noarlunga has shared their goals around with four players kicking 20 goals or more this season including Jake Veide (23 goals) who has had a great season and will need to play well for the Cockle Divers to get up. It’s a tight one to try and pick a winner in but maybe Christies Beach having the home ground advantage will see them over the line. My tip...Christies Beach by five points.

Willunga and Langhorne Creek battle it out for GSFL Grand Final spot

Second Semi-Final (2.30pm Saturday 7 September @ Myponga)Reigning premier Langhorne Creek face minor premier Willunga at Myponga tomorrow with a place in the Grand Final on the line. The Hawks were on the ropes last week, trailing Mount Compass by 33 points at three quarter time, but came home with a seven-goal last term to get up and book a date with the Demons. The teams met twice during the minor round with Willunga winning by nine points in round six before Langhorne Creek turned the tables with a 17-point victory in round 15. There are classic match-ups all over the ground with the bigman battle between Willunga’s Daniel Bass and Langhorne Creek’s James Sellar a big key to the outcome. Bass won the Mail Medal for 2019 while Sellar was runner-up. Willunga were ranked number one in defence during the minor round, conceding a frugal 63 points per game. Langhorne Creek have many avenues to goal with five players kicking more than 20 majors this season including Jarrod Kellock with 44 goals. An extremely tight one to call. My tip...Langhorne Creek by 10 points.First Semi-Final (2.30pm Sunday 8 September @ Strathalbyn)With a quarter to go in last week’s Qualifying Final, Mount Compass would’ve been eyeing off a spot in the second semi-final against Willunga but instead they face a do-or-die first semi-final clash with a confident Victor Harbor outfit. Victor had a solid 23-point Elimination Final victory over McLaren and would’ve gained great confidence from that win after dropping their final three games during the minor round. Mount Compass did everything right for three quarters last week before giving up a 33-point lead to be overrun by Langhorne Creek in the Qualifying Final. The teams met twice during the minor round with Mount Compass winning both contests including a crushing 69-point victory back in round 11. Depending on weather conditions it could be a high scoring affair with both teams boasting potent forward lines. Mount Compass’ Tom Pinyon and Ziggy Vitkunas have kicked a whopping 189 goals between them while Sam Basham and Luke Davey have contributed 132 goals for Victor Harbor. Another tough one to pick but I expect Mount Compass to bounce back. My tip...Mount Compass by 17 points.

Qualifying Final (Flagstaff Hill v Christies Beach)Three-time reigning premier Flagstaff Hill have booked a date with minor premier Noarlunga in the second semi-final after a comprehensive 60-point win over Christies Beach. The Falcons were inaccurate in the first quarter kicking 3.6 to take a 12-point lead into quarter time. They extended their lead to 25 points at half time and despite kicking 3.9 in the third term further extended their lead out to 45 points at the last change. Five goals to two in the final term saw the final score blowout to 15.20 (110) to 7.8 (50). The Falcons had nine different goalkickers with Ben Rossi leading the way with three goals while Ryan Parry also kicked three for the Saints. Casey Davies, Mark Hollis and Rossi were best for Flagstaff Hill. Parry, Josiah Sheppard and Michael Mazey were named in the best for Christies. Christies Beach will need to bounce back in the knockout first semi-final against Port Noarlunga on Sunday to continue their season.Elimination Final (Port Noarlunga v Reynella)Port Noarlunga has cruised into the second week of the finals with a comprehensive 41-point win over Reynella at Port Noarlunga. After a tight opening term, Port Noarlunga led by five points at the first break. Six goals to two from the Cockle Divers broke the game open in the second quarter as the home side enjoyed a 31-point lead at the long break. The Wine Flies bounced back in the third stanza kicking four goals to one and reducing the margin to just 13 points at the last change. Reynella had given themselves a chance at an upset win but buoyed on by the home crowd, Port Noarlunga stormed away in the last quarter to win 16.10 (106) to 10.5 (65). Dylan Williams kicked six goals and Jake Veide three for the victorious Cockle Divers while Josh Frisby and Callan Semple were the only multiple goalkickers for the Wine Flies with two goals each. Williams, Daniel Trevena and Luke Irving were best for Port Noarlunga. Damon Arnold, Adam Broadbent and Ben Lockett were named best for Reynella.

First Semi-Final (Cove v Reynella)Reigning premier Cove has kept their premiership defence on track with a tough 14-point victory over Reynella yesterday at Morphett Vale. With scoring hard to come by, Cove scored the only goal of the first half to take a handy seven-point lead into the long break. The Cobras were in control after kicking their second goal in the third term to lead by 13 points turning for home. Reynella tried hard to peg back the margin but in the end Cove ran out winners 2.3 (15) to 0.1 (1). Layla Dungey and Felicity Oliver each kicked a goal for Cove while Samantha Franson continued her excellent season being named best for the Cobras along with Lauren Kenny, Dungey, Seraphina Moon, Jaime Norup and Lauren Grigg. Best players for Reynella were Caitlin Williams, Olivia Gallio, Lauren Fisher, Tessa Wesson, Shawna Bradshaw and Anja Bancevic. Cove will face Flagstaff Hill in Sunday’s Preliminary Final.Second Semi-Final (Aldinga v Flagstaff Hill)Aldinga booked their place in the Grand Final with a comprehensive 45-point victory over Flagstaff Hill. The minor premier flew out of the blocks kicking four goals in the first term to lead by 25 points at quarter time. Two further goals in the second quarter saw the lead blow out to 38 points at the long break. The second half was tighter with Aldinga only adding one more goal with Flagstaff Hill finally scoring in the final term with a behind to leave the final score at 7.4 (46) to 0.1 (1). Helen Maidment kicked two goals for the Sharks while their best players were Sophia Flanagan-Sjoberg, Jasmine Smith and Lauren Ferors. Best for the Falcons were Hannah Griffin, Soriah Moon and Alana Baker. Flagstaff Hill will need to bounce back quickly as they face Cove in the Preliminary Final to try and gain another shot at Aldinga in the big one.

Reigning premier Kingscote knocked out of title race by Wisanger
Reigning premier Kingscote knocked out of title race by Wisanger

02 September 2019, 1:03 AM

First Semi-Final (Kingscote v Wisanger)Wisanger has ended Kingscote’s season with a comprehensive 55-point win in the first semi-final played yesterday at Wisanger. The two sides met in the final minor round with Kingscote winning a thriller by six points and when scores were locked away at 5.1 (31) apiece at quarter time, it ppeared another classic was on the cards. However from that point on it was all Wisanger as they kicked five goals to one in the second term to take a 25-point lead into the long break. The third quarter was tight but the Panthers still managed to extend their lead out to 31 points with a quarter to play. The last quarter was a procession from the Panthers and with the home crowd behind them, they slammed on a further seven goals to three to win 21.11 (137) to 12.10 (82). Wisanger had 10 different goal kickers with Gavin Mason leading the way with five majors. Best players for the victorious Wisanger team were Paul Bott, Samuel Snowball and Khyal Stead while for the vanquished Kingscote their best were Rory Lovering, Declan Corby and Paul Green. Wisanger march on to the preliminary final against Parndana at Parndana on Saturday while Kingscote are left to rue their missed chance at back-to-back flags.Second Semi-Final (Western Districts v Parndana)Minor premier Western Districts Saints have won their way into the 2019 Grand Final with a thrilling five-point victory over Parndana Roosters. The final scores were 10.6 (66) to 9.7 (61). The Saints had limped into the finals, losing their last two minor round games before having the bye in the final round. They bye obviously did them good along with the knowledge that they had prevailed over the Roosters in their previous two encounters in 2019. Josh Graham kicked three goals for Western Districts while Reece Johnston also slotted three majors for Parndana. Best for the Saints were Damon Weatherspoon, Henry Riggs and Robert Clements while for Parndana Hahns Sullivan, Jaan Kuchel and Nathan Trethewey performed well. Western Districts will play in their third Grand Final in a row with the match to be played at Kingscote on September 14 while Parndana will host Wisanger in the Preliminary Final.

Ironbank Cherry Gardens keep their premiership defence alive
Ironbank Cherry Gardens keep their premiership defence alive

First Semi-Final (Ironbank Cherry Gardens v Macclesfield)Reigning premier Ironbank Cherry Gardens have kept their dreams of back-to-back flags alive with a 36-point win over Macclesfield at Mt Pleasant. Ironbank Cherry Gardens started well kicking towards the scoreboard end kicking the first three goals but they were inaccurate kicking 3.4 to Macclesfield’s 1.1 to only lead by 15 points at the first break. The arm wrestle continued in the second quarter as the Thunderers extended their lead to 17 points at the long break with the Bloods playing coach Denis Iljcesen missing a tough shot on the siren which would’ve reduced the margin to an even two goals. Macclesfield started the third quarter well and had some chances to score but didn’t capitalise which left the door open for the Thunderers and they took the chance to kick four quick goals and take a 30-point lead into the last quarter. A further three goals to two saw the final score 13.8 (86) to 7.8 (50). Maccy were brave and have some very good young talent so watch out for them to improve next year. Ironbank Cherry Gardens were just too talented and experienced. Elijah Ware played a great game for the Thunderers kicking three goals and setting up many forward thrusts from half back with his ‘laser like’ kicking. He was supported by Adam Shearwood with four goals while Todd Pfeiffer and Levi Grigg also played excellent games. For Macclesfield Graydon Brand kicked three goals while Michael Smith, Brad Noske and Brodie Hart were the Bloods’ best.Second Semi-Final (Gumeracha v Kersbrook)Gumeracha have caused a major upset by knocking off the previously undefeated minor premier Kersbrook by two points in a high quality second semi-final at Kangarilla to book their spot in the Grand Final at Macclesfield on September 14. The Magpies last won an ‘A’ grade flag back in 1984. It looked like ‘business as usual’ for the Brookers as they streaked to a 36-point lead at half-time, with one foot already in the Grand Final. Gumeracha had other ideas as they hit back hard in the third term kicking seven goals to three and reducing the margin to just 10 points at the final change. Belief was high in the Magpies camp but Kersbrook weren’t going to lie down but inaccurate kicking (2.6) would haunt them as the Magpies slotted five straight goals to hang on and win 16.9 (105) to 15.13 (103). Gumeracha have scored and amazing 36.15 in their two finals so far. Brendon Moon and Sam Hanna each kicked four goals for Gumeracha while Josh Laube was a star up forward for Kersbrook kicking six majors. Ben Hanna was best on ground for Gumeracha and he was ably supported by Sam Hanna and Moon. Lachlan Peter, Bradley Pearce and Laube were best for the Brookers.

Qualifying Final (Mount Compass v Langhorne Creek)Reigning premier Langhorne Creek have produced an amazing come-from-behind nine point victory over Mount Compass at Victor Harbor to progress to next Saturday’s second semi-final against minor premier Willunga. Kicking to the Netball Courts end at Victor with the aid of a strong breeze, Mount Compass got off to a brilliant start to lead 5.5 (35) to 0.0 (0) at quarter time. Langhorne Creek had use of the breeze in the second term and managed to kick three goals to one and reduce the margin to 20 points at the long break. After a tight third quarter Mount Compass turned for home with a very handy lead of 33 points but Langhorne Creek had use of the breeze in the final stanza and came roaring home kicking 7.6 to 1.0 to take the victory 11.10 (76) to 10.7 (67). Jarrod Kellock and James Sellar kicked two goals each for the Hawks while Tom Pinyon kicked three and Ziggy Vitkunas two for Mount Compass. Best for the victors were Sellar, Curtis Perrey, Coby Helyar, Kellock and Tom Derham while for the Bulldogs Peter Hoban, Tom Corbett, Steven Copestick, Dwayne Ruddock and Nick Brokenshire were named in their best players.Elimination Final (McLaren v Victor Harbor)Victor Harbor have eliminated McLaren after a 23-point victory at Langhorne Creek. Victor got off to a flying start kicking six goals to two in the first quarter to lead by 25 points at the first change. Over the next two quarters Victor kicked an incredible 4.20 while McLaren managed 9.3 to only trail by 12 points at the last change. Thankfully for the ‘Roos they found their range in the final stanza to kick 5.3 to McLaren’s 3.4 to move through to next Sunday’s first semi-final against Mount Compass with the final score being 15.26 (116) to 14.9 (93). Luke Davey kicked four and Eljay Connors three goals for Victor Harbor while James Grimley kicked four and Max Wakefield three goals for McLaren. Best for the Kangaroos were Billy Wade, Zac Dowling and Jack McKay while for the Eagles their best were Brett Ellis, Codey Ellison and Kiefver Zohar.

Qualifying Final (2.30pm Saturday 31 August @ Victor Harbor)Reigning premier Langhorne Creek start their quest for back-to-back flags when they clash with Mount Compass in the Qualifying Final tomorrow at Victor Harbor. Mount Compass have been waiting nearly 12 months for a chance to bounce back from going out in ‘straight sets’ in the 2018 finals series after finishing minor premier, while Langhorne Creek have come home with a rush this season winning their past eight matches after looking decidedly shaky at 5-5 after 10 rounds. There are star players everywhere for both sides with Mount Compass having a very potent forward line featuring Tom Pinyon (112 goals) and Ziggy Vitkunas (72 goals) providing great targets for the Bulldogs midfield. Langhorne Creek are well led by former Glenelg, Adelaide and Melbourne player James Sellar who finished tied for second in the Mail Medal. He is ably supported by Caleb Howell and Jarrad Kellock who have both booted 42 goals this season. It promises to be a fantastic game in fine conditions. Toss of the coin to pick a winner. My tip...Langhorne Creek by one point.Elimination Final (2.30pm Sunday 1 September @ Langhorne Creek)McLaren Eagles face off against the Victor Harbor Kangaroos in the cut-throat Elimination Final at Langhorne Creek on Sunday. The Eagles had a great run during the 2018 finals series going all the way to the Grand Final before going down to Langhorne Creek. They’ll have to do it the hard way this year but that experience could stand them in good stead. It will be Victor Harbor’s first trip to the major round since 2015, a bit of a drought for the 24-time premiers. The Kangaroos had the chance to win the minor premiership with three rounds remaining but amazingly slipped to fifth spot after losing their last three matches of the minor round including a 29-point loss in round 16 to McLaren. McLaren will need to control Sam Basham (70 goals) and Luke Davey (57 goals) who have been very dangerous along with playing coach Clint Alleway. Max Wakefield has had a very good first season for the Eagles with 47 goals and Brett Ellis capped off an excellent minor round campaign by finishing tied for second in the Mail Medal with James Sellar. Another excellent match-up which could easily go either way. My tip...McLaren by 10 points.
