With some safe hits to Perkins, Meg Chaplin, Lisa Wilson and Hantie Pretorious Masters brought home their first two runs for the game with an out at second and another two outs by the safe glove of R. Mis Ausman had a safe hit to the outfield also and was pushed around the diamond and brought home from some well placed hits with Strath making another two outs at first and R. Mayes fielding and playing her base for the third out.Strath’s fifth dig produced a home run to Cutting which was the only run for the innings and the tying run with an infield fly, a catch taken at shortstop by Julie Briggs and a final K2 sending Masters in for their final bat and a chance to advance their score. Strath needed to defend the tie and did with Cutting again fielding and throwing to first for the out, another K2 and T. Mayes at third fielding and throwing to R. Mayes to make the third out tag to end the game as a draw three runs each.Hills Softball Association ‘C’ Grade Women (Strathalbyn v Macclesfield)Macclesfield were up to bat first and had safe hits to Beth Lions and Valerie Pederson with both making it home for two runs while the outs were one for batting out of order, an out at home made by first time catcher Annabel McGregor who quickly threw to third to catch the runner off base for a double play. Strath came in to bat and gained some walks which moved players around the diamond with Laura Sneath the only batter to get a safe hit which all brought four runs home with Maccy’s Lisa Lions being a part of all three outs at third. The second dig for Maccy had safe hits to L. Lions, Zarlee Winitara and Annabel Lions bringing home a further two runs with one runner being called out for leaving the base early with short stop Amber Crawford and pitcher Rebecca Sims both taking catches to end the innings. Lions who quickly threw to third to catch the runner off base for a tag and double play. The third dig for Maccy produced hits to several players but they were fielded well and thrown to Nicole Filsell at first base for two outs with new pitcher/catcher combo of Bailey to Crawford working well for a K2 to hold them scoreless. Strath came in to bat again and gained walks with McGregor and Sneath getting hits but again with some great base stealing they brought another four runs home with Maccy making an out at first, a catch at centre field by Winitara and a K2 to end the innings and the game with Strath coming out on top with 12 runs to Maccy’s 4.

Razorbacks & Warriors notch their first wins of the season in Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket

30 October 2023, 8:00 AM

Nairne won their first game of the season after defeating Macclesfield by one run in a thrilling round four encounter in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) on Saturday. The Razorbacks won the toss and decided to bat first on a windy day at the picturesque Nairne Oval, and they were soon in dire straits as they slumped to 5/49. The home side badly needed a partnership as the dangerous Shane Kenney joined opening batsman Richard Boscence, who was playing a lone hand for his side. This pair added 57 runs for the sixth wicket before Boscence went for an important 40 from 65 balls (4 x 4’s). Kenney went on to top score with a typically hard-hitting 44 from 29 balls (5 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) as Nairne recovered to post a total of 153 before being bowled out in the 43rd over. Lachlan Barrett was the pick of the Redbacks bowlers with figures of 4/29 (9) and he was well supported by Luke Jones (2/2) and Josh Lewis Burns (2/13). The Redbacks lost an early wicket before David Caddle (17) and Barrett (47) combined for an important 55-run stand for the second wicket. Once this partnership was broken, regular wickets fell with ‘Maccy’ in trouble at 6/104. Tom Keogh (23) got the Redbacks back into the game before a flurry of late wickets saw them come up agonisingly short. Nairne had six wicket takers with William Brooks (2/19), Caleb Walker (2/31) and Nick Williams (2/33) leading the way.Woodside also won their first game of 2023/24 with a tight three-wicket victory against Hahndorf. The Magpies batted first with Lachlan Huxtable (28) and Henry Baker (26) putting on 38 runs for the second wicket as Hahndorf reached 1/60. Steady wickets fell from this point, to see the Magpies teetering at 6/101 as Bradey Judd joined Ben Montgomerie at the crease. They added an all-important 64 runs for the seventh wicket with Montgomerie scoring 57 from 55 balls (11 x 4’s) and Judd 24 from 39 balls (2 x 4’s) as Hahndorf posted a competitive 8/196 from their 45 overs. Harrison Reid (2/24), Chris Baschiera (2/33) and Nick Johns (2/35) were the leading wicket takers for Woodside. The Warriors started their run chase well with Brad Collins (53), Trent Young (41) and Thomas Rooney (31) putting their team in a great position at 2/137. Hahndorf battled away to take five wickets but Dave Wescombe (20) and Shane Druwitt (15 not out) steadied the Warriors as they reached the required target in the 44th over. Liam O’Neil (2/27), Ryan Trafford-Walker (2/28) and Bradey Judd (2/44) were the multiple wicket takers for Hahndorf.Reigning premier Lobethal continued on their merry way this season with a comprehensive 10-wicket victory against Bremer Callington. The Cobras won the toss and decided to bat first, but only Graydon Brand (32) and Alex Ford (16) could reach double figures as they were bundled out for just 75. Five Lobethal bowlers took wickets with Matt Martin leading the way with 3/11 (8). Will Zadow (2/10) and Steve Huxter (2/12) were the other multiple wicket takers. The Tigers wasted no time in knocking off the runs in the 10th over with Sam Graeber whacking 52 not out from just 27 balls (4 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) and Riley Harten making 24 not out from 30 balls (3 x 4’s). Langhorne Creek are also undefeated after a 37-run victory over local rival Strathalbyn in a rare Sunday encounter at Langhorne Creek. The Stallions won the toss and decided to have a bowl first and at 2/30, the move was paying early dividends. Daniel Kropp (46 from 74) continued his good season and he received solid support from skipper Brodie O’Dea (38), Troy Blackwell (32) and Brayden Frost (29) as the Tigers posted a total of 193 before being bowled out in the 44th over. Strathalbyn skipper Brayden Gaiter snared 4/34 (8.4), while Tyson Roberts (2/22) and Matty Roberts (2/39) chimed in with a couple of wickets each. Strathalbyn started well with Luke Cousins (39) and Nathan Pelle (22) putting on 51 runs for the first wicket. Daniel Cleggett was introduced into the attack and he turned the game in Langhorne Creek’s favour, snaring 4/30 from his nine overs of off-spin. Mark Abbott (20) battled hard, while Brayden Gaiter (24 not out) and Lachlan Cutting (15) added 43 for the 10th wicket before the Stallions were bowled out for 156. Trent Frahn also bowled an excellent spell for Langhorne Creek with 3/10 (6).  Ladder (after round 4)Lobethal 16, Langhorne Creek 16, Macclesfield 12, Strathalbyn 8, Woodside 4, Hahndorf 4, Nairne 4, Bremer Callington 0.Round 5 fixtures (home teams named first)  Bremer Callington v WoodsideHahndorf v NairneLobethal v Langhorne Creek Macclesfield v Strathalbyn

Raiders take back-to-back wins in Hills Cricket

29 October 2023, 5:00 AM

Bridgewater made it two wins on the trot after a thrilling nine-run win in a low-scoring contest at Kangarilla yesterday during round three action in the Hills Cricket Association (HCA). The Raiders batted first with Ty Watson (22) and Luke Hoyle (19) getting their side off to a good start with a 40-run opening stand. Regular wickets fell after the opening partnership as the Raiders slumped to 5/70, before Jarrad Tait scored a quickfire 36 from 28 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Ultimately, Bridgewater were bowled out in the 35th over for just 125. Troy Martinsen (3/19), Steve Featherstone (3/34) and Ryan Grimmond (2/26) were the leading wicket takers in a good bowling performance from Kangarilla. The Kangarilla run chase was underpinned by a patient innings from Grimmond, who made 60 from 110 balls (7 x 4’s), but he received very little support with Featherstone (11) and Kyal Walton (11) the only other batsmen to reach double figures. Despite this, ‘Kangies’ looked the likely winner at 7/115, before they lost their last 3/1 to be bowled out in the 42nd over for 116. Watson was the hero at the end for the Raiders with 3/23 (5.5 overs), while Tait completed a fine double with a match-winning 5/17 from his nine overs. Aldgate’s perfect start to the season continued with a comfortable eight-wicket win against Mount Lofty at Aldgate Oval. The ‘Gaters’ now sit on top of the ladder with three wins from as many games. Mount Lofty won the toss and elected to bat first with Josh Healey (20) and Nick Justice (22) adding 35 runs for the first wicket. Redcaps skipper Jordan Neis-Beer (20) and Connor Milde (18) made useful contributions, while Ryan Pistola top scored with a patient 43 from 86 balls (3 x 4’s). The Redcaps were bowled out for 156, which was probably 50+ runs less than they’d hoped for. Five Aldgate bowlers took wickets with Matty Hansen (4/26) the standout. Skipper Jake Turnbull (2/25) and Shaun Atkins (2/26) were the other multiple wicket takers for the home side. The inform pair of Mitch Thomas and Josh Callaghan got Aldgate off to another good start with a partnership of 64 before Callaghan went for 17 (28 balls). Turnbull and Thomas then added 27 for the second wicket as Thomas reached his second half century in a row before being removed for 55 from 47 balls (7 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). ‘Turbo’ continued on to make 54 not out from 58 balls (6 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) with teenager Max Bilsborow chipping in with 16 not out as the winning runs came up in the 29th over. Matt Pistola (1/13) and Milde (1/33) were the wicket takers for Mount Lofty. Reigning premier Stirling registered their second win of the 2023/24 campaign after a three-wicket win over Meadows at Stirling Oval. The home side won the toss and elected to field as Luke Tonkin and Rohan Reid opened the batting for the Bulldogs. This pair wasn’t separated until they’d added 127 runs in the 26th over with Tonkin going for 28 (72 balls). Reid continued on to top score with 87 from 86 balls (12 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s), his first half century of the season, but from 0/127 Meadows were dismissed for 194. Brad Louch (29) and Ryan Clarke (13) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures. Veteran Chris Shaw (4/28), Connor McFadyen (3/32) and Ned Hopgood (2/22) were the chief destroyers for the Eagles, while Pete Fryer bowled a miserly spell of 0/16 from his nine overs. The Eagles’ run chase started in a blaze of glory with 21 runs coming from the first over of the innings bowled by Louch, while the 50-run partnership between Jack Read and Raph Baker came up in just the sixth over! Louch eventually got his man as he dismissed Read for a whirlwind 46 from just 29 balls (6 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). After the fast start, three wickets fell and it was an even contest with the home side at 3/82 as Harrison Webb joined his skipper Jack Pick at the crease. This pair ultimately put on a match-winning stand worth 83 runs for the fourth wicket with Pick making 44 (72 balls) Webb went on to top score with 48 not out (48 balls) with the winning runs coming up in the 37th over. Clarke (3/25) and Louch (2/51) were the leading wicket takers for Meadows. Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) are the other undefeated team after three rounds after a tight 21-run win against Mylor at Cherry Gardens yesterday. SCIB won the toss and decided to bat first and had a number of handy partnerships with Adam Shearwood (39), Sam Hill (23) and Tom Watton (18) all contributing in the top order. For the second time this season, Aaron Thompson played the pivotal knock of the innings with 52 not out from 49 balls (4 x 4’s). It was Thompson’s second half century of the season and it helped lift his side to a healthy total of 8/186 from 45 overs. Jesse Cooper (4/35) and Ben James (2/34) were the multiple wicket takers for Mylor, while Oliver Barnes bowled an economical spell of 0/11 from his nine overs. Mylor got themselves into a winning position in the run chase as they reached 2/113 in the 25th over with contributions from Ben James (24) and Todd Dellatorre (20), but it was the wicket of Shane Maslin that turned the game in Scott Creek Ironbank’s favour. Maslin top scored with 44 from 72 balls (6 x 4’s), but his dismissal precipitated a collapse of 8/52 as Mylor were bowled out in the 40th over for 165. Five SCIB bowlers took wickets with Watton the standout with 4/28 (8), while Beau Thomas snared 2/30 (9). Ladder (after round 3)Aldgate 18, Scott Creek Ironbank 18, Stirling 12, Bridgewater 12, Kangarilla 6, Mount Lofty 6, Mylor 0, Meadows 0.Round 4 fixtures (home teams named first)Bridgewater v AldgateKangarilla v MylorMeadows v Mount LoftyStirling v Scott Creek Ironbank

Port Elliot are in a great position to continue their early season undefeated run after posting 9/266 on day one of their clash with Goolwa during round three action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) on Saturday. Port Elliot batted first and after losing Ethan Spriggs (0) early, Luke Collett and Ben Griffiths added 59 runs for the second wicket before Collett went for 23. Another significant partnership was needed as Tyson Levy joined skipper Joel Harris at the crease. This pair added 91 for the sixth wicket with Harris making 26 from 78 balls. Levy continued on to top score with a critical 91 from just 78 balls (13 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as the Bloods finished their 70 overs in a strong position. Goolwa tried eight bowlers with skipper Sam Carlyle (3/49) and Andy Evans (2/38) the chief wicket takers. McLaren Districts are in a good position to register their first win of the season after compiling 5/256 on day one of their clash with Myponga-Sellicks at Myponga. The Crushers had a number of good partnerships starting with a 54-run opening stand between Daniel Bruce (24) and Zac Hodges. Noarlunga skipper Chad Parrish (4/46) and Cam Bullard (4/57) were the main wicket takers for the Shoes.Victor Harbor and Yankalilla battled it out on Saturday as ‘Victor’ made 8/157 on day one of their clash at Yankalilla. Hahndorf won their first game of the season after defeating Bremer/Callington by 67 runs during round three action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) at Hahndorf on Saturday. The Magpies batted first and posted a competitive 7/223 from their 45 overs. Their score was set up by two key partnerships. The first was between skipper Dan Jenner (48) and Henry Baker (44) who added 100 for the first wicket. Then Henry Hassold (43) and Ben Montgomerie (30) combined in a 74-run stand for the fourth wicket, while Michael Shanahan chimed in with a useful 21 not out. Johnny Fitzgerald (3/31) and Luke Bush (2/35) were the leading wicket takers for the Cobras. Bremer/Callington didn’t have enough contributors to chase down the sizeable total with only Alfie Wenk (58) and Alex Durbidge (30) passing 20 as they finished at 9/156. Will Pearce (2/16), Lachie Huxtable (2/17) and Shanahan (2/40) were the multiple wicket takers for the Magpies. Reigning premier Lobethal continued their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable 86-run home win against Strathalbyn. ‘Strath’ won the toss and sent Lobethal in and the move paid early dividends with the Tigers slipping to 3/26 in the eighth over. The home side desperately needed a partnership and they got a great one through Daniel Norsworthy and boom recruit Jeremy Hackett. This pair added 152 runs for the fourth wicket before Hackett was dismissed for 74 from 78 balls (8 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Norsworthy went on to top score with 80 from 114 balls (6 x 4’s, 1 x 6). To underline the importance of their partnership, no other Tigers batsman reached double figures as ‘Lobey’ was bowled out in the 40th over for 219. Brayden Gaiter (4/40) and Lachlan Cutting (4/49) were the chief wicket takers for the Stallions. Strathalbyn were also in early trouble as they slumped to 3/36 before Mark Abbott, in his first game of the season, and Riley Tonkin came together to add 45 for the fourth wicket. Tonkin made 32 (39 balls), while Abbott top scored with 52 (84 balls). Unfortunately for the Stallions, only two other batsmen reached double figures as the visitors were rolled for 133 in the 37th over. Lobethal used an amazing 10 bowlers with Ben Matthews (3/16), Sam Graeber (2/1) and Matt Martin (2/26) the multiple wicket takers. Langhorne Creek are also undefeated after recording a five-wicket victory over Nairne on Saturday as the Razorbacks find themselves in the unusual position with no wins after three rounds. The Razorbacks won the toss and decided to bat first and struggled their way to a total of 140 before being bowled out in the 45th over. Chris Farrell with 44 from 55 balls (5 x 4’s) was the standout batsman for Nairne, while Will Brooks (18) and Caleb Walker (14 not out) added 32 valuable runs for the last wicket. Five Langhorne Creek bowlers took wickets including Ben Warren (2/12), Brodie O’Dea (2/22) and Trent Frahn (2/23). Nairne battled hard in the field, reducing Langhorne Creek to 5/97, and an upset win was a still a possibility. Skipper O’Dea (32 not out) and Troy Blackwell (26 not out) put paid to this with an unbroken sixth-wicket stand worth 44 runs to see their side across the line in the 32nd over. Opener Jaspa Tonkin scored a valuable 25 (37 balls), while Walker was the best of the Nairne bowlers with figures of 3/25 from nine overs. Macclesfield are the third undefeated side in the AEHCA competition following their five-wicket win against Woodside. The Warriors batted first with veteran Dave Wescombe the mainstay of the innings with a top score of 66. All six Macclesfield bowlers took wickets with Josh Lewis Burns (3/30), Kieran O’Connell (2/19) and Lachie Barrett (2/19) leading the way. The Redbacks got off to a good start in the run chase with Tom Filsell (30) and Connor Moore (22) adding 40 for the first wicket. Wickets then fell regularly and at 4/78, Woodside were back in the game. O’Connell was joined by Lewis-Burns and this pair put paid to any faint hopes the Warriors had of victory with an excellent 79-run stand for the fifth wicket before O’Connell departed for 33 (6 x 4’s). Lewis-Burns completed a fine all-round day with 39 not out (6 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as the winning runs came up in the 32nd over. Shane Druwitt was the standout with the ball for Woodside with the fine figures of 4/19 (7.4). Ladder (after round 3)Lobethal 12, Langhorne Creek 12, Macclesfield 12, Strathalbyn 8, Hahndorf 4, Woodside 0, Nairne 0, Bremer/Callington 0.Round 4 fixtures (home teams named first)  Lobethal v Bremer/Callington Hahndorf v WoodsideNairne v MacclesfieldLanghorne Creek v Strathalbyn (11.00am Sunday)

Strathalbyn Softball juniors review
Strathalbyn Softball juniors review

22 October 2023, 9:00 PM

Hills Softball Association Under 14 Mixed (Strathalbyn v Pirates)With a team of nearly all new players and only seven of them, Strathalbyn went up to bat and made great choices at which balls to swing at with nearly every player gaining a walk which pushed them all around the diamond to bring in runs to Tallera Spinks, Sam Baker, Lincoln Strange, Kodi Goodwin, Scarlett Finn and T. Spinks again for a total of six. Pirates pitcher/catcher combo of Charlie Askew to Jet Donoghue made two K2’s and also combined for an out at home to end the innings. Pirates first turn at bat also gained them some walks but safe hits to Hugo Owen and Elsie Bloffwitch, one of which was fielded well in the outfield by Strath’s Tayah Thornton helped to get runners around to bring home the full seven runs allowed with Strath’s pitcher/catcher combo of T.
