Mt Compass jumped into the finals after defeating Victor Harbor outright by seven wickets during the final round of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at Burgess Oval on Saturday. ‘Compass’ started day two on 3/108, just nine runs behind the Vipers’ first innings total of 117, and they declared at 3/126 with Jamarley Daley (48) and Matthew East (45 not out) the leading run scorers. Victor Harbor struggled in their second innings as they were bowled out for 87 in the 43rd over. Matthew Hutchinson (22) was the only player to pass 20 for the Vipers, while Aaron Dalitz (3/16) and Bailey Baldock (3/17) were the best of the Bulls bowlers. This left Mt Compass needing just 79 runs for an outright victory and a spot in the finals. Daley (38) and Josh Murfitt (37 not out) made light work of the target as the winning runs came up after 16 overs of the second innings. Encounter Bay claimed the minor premiership with a six-wicket win against Willunga on Saturday. The Bays bowled Willunga out for 86 on the first day and were struggling at 6/60 themselves before getting through to stumps on 6/67. McLaren Districts were searching for their first win since December as they set about chasing down the Bloods’ day one total of 8/231. The Crushers made a good fist of the run chase as they reached 2/145 through an excellent 97-run stand between Jim Ryan and Justin Twartz. Ryan top scored with 69 (139 balls), while Twartz made 58 (77 balls). Once that partnership was broken, Port Elliot took over to claim 8/62 and dismiss the Crushers for 207. Veteran opening bowler Simon Donaldson was the star for Port Elliot with 6/44 from 17.4 overs. It was Donaldson’s second five-wicket haul of the season. Josh Andrewartha (2/75) was the other multiple wicket taker for Port Elliot. Reigning premier Noarlunga had a comfortable eight-wicket win against Goolwa at Old Noarlunga to finish the minor round in fourth spot. The Shoes bowled Goolwa out for 137 on day one and they got off to a good start in the run chase on Saturday with Cam Bullard making 43 (7 x 4’s) in an opening stand worth 55 runs. Two wickets fell at this score as Goolwa pushed hard for more breakthroughs in the first session. Anthony Tucker (29 not out) joined Jason Scarff in an 83-run unbroken third-wicket stand to get the Shoes home with 16 overs to spare. Scarff top scored with 51 not out (7 x 4’s). James Lawrence (1/23) and Josh Jones (1/27) were the wicket takers for the Magpies. Myponga-Sellicks won their third game in a row to end the season after defeating Yankalilla by 28 runs in a low-scoring game at Myponga. Norris gained herself a walk but they were both left out on the diamond with another K2 and an out at first ending the innings.Strath had excellent fielding in Redsox third innings with third baser Gab Martin taking a catch, another K2 and Daniels making the out at first sending them from the diamond with runners on but unable to score. An Adam Shearwood century inspired Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) to a thrilling five-run win against Meadows to maintain top spot on the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ladder at Cherry Gardens yesterday. It was the second match in a row that SCIB had won by the narrow margin of five runs. Shearwood opened the batting with veteran Andy Adams with this pair putting together a 160-run stand before Adams was dismissed for 65 from 89 balls (8 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Shearwood went on to top score with 112 from 125 balls (14 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s), his second ‘ton’ of the season. Aaron Thompson (22) and Sam Hill (19) made useful contributions as SCIB put up an imposing total of 6/240 from their 45 overs. Brad Louch (3/41) and Rohan Reid (2/38) were the leading wicket takers for Meadows. The Bulldogs’ run chase began badly with the inform Dylan Brown dismissed first ball by Suresh Sripada (2/41). Brad Dawe (50), Rohan Reid (49) and Chad Dawe (41) gave their side a great chance of running down the big total, and at the start of the last over, Meadows needed eight runs to win. Beau Thomas (4/52) held his nerve to dismiss Louch (32) with two balls remaining in the match with Meadows bowled out for 235. Hill (2/42) was the other multiple wicket taker for Scott Creek Ironbank. Aldgate won their second game in a row with a five-wicket win at home against Bridgewater. The Raiders batted first and they were in early trouble at 3/43 before Jarrad Tait joined Ty Watson to add 52 runs for the fourth wicket before Watson departed for 39 (78 balls). Tait was looking dangerous as he hit seven boundaries and four sixes on his way to a rapid-fire 60 from 37 balls. James Graves (21) was the only other Bridgewater batsman to pass 20 as their innings wrapped up at 9/187. Shaun Atkins (3/35), James Anthony (2/3) and Matt Hansen (2/31) were the multiple wicket takers for the Gaters. Aldgate were under early pressure at 3/58, but with Tait unable to bowl due to injury, Atkins and Jake Turnbull began to get on top of the Raiders attack. This pair added 97 runs for the fourth wicket with Atkins making 57 from 51 balls (4 x 4’s, 5 x 6’s), while Turnbull finished with 56 from 111 balls (5 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) as the winning runs came up with 20 balls to spare. Watson (2/14) and Peter Atkins (2/48) were the leading wicket takers for ‘Bridgey’.Stirling moved back inside the top-four with a convincing six-wicket win at home against Kangarilla. It was the sixth consecutive loss for ‘Kangies’ and put paid to any hopes they had of playing finals this season. Kangarilla batted first and got off to a good start with Ryan Grimmond (37) and Joel Stidston adding 50 runs for the first wicket. From then on it was all Stirling as they took 10/46 to bowl the visitors out for just 96 in the 32nd over. Off-spinner Jack Read was the star with the ball for the Eagles with the fine figures of 4/10 (6). He was well supported by Ezekiel Hemming (2/13) and Connor McFadyen (2/45). McFadyen (30) and Read (25) continued their good day with a 54-run opening stand with the reigning premiers knocking off the total for the loss of four wickets in just the 21st over. Stirling can confirm their finals berth with a win against Bridgewater this Saturday in the final round. Mt Lofty are one win away from securing the all-important double chance after an excellent six-wicket win against Mylor at Heathfield. The Pipers batted first and were in strife at 3/52 before Adrian Gaunt and Ben James came together to put on 93 for the fourth wicket. Gaunt top scored with 77 (92 balls), while James finished on 72 not out (86 balls) as Mylor posted 6/213 from their 45 overs. All to play for with one day left in the Great Southern Cricket minor round
All to play for with one day left in the Great Southern Cricket minor round

19 February 2024, 9:30 AM

The bowlers had a day out at Willunga on Saturday as Willunga and Encounter Bay traded blows on day one of their clash during round 12 action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). 16 wickets fell for just 153 runs as the Bays reached stumps at 6/67 in pursuit of Willunga’s first innings total of 86. Earlier, Encounter Bay sent Willunga into bat and the Demons were soon in strife at 5/22. Chad Franceschini played a lone hand for Willunga, being the only batsman to reach double figures, top scoring with 56 from 78 balls (5 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Encounter Bay skipper Blake Bailey led from the front with 5/41 (11), his second five-wicket haul of the season. Kieran Garrett (3/18) and Luke Crichton (2/15) were the other wicket takers for the Bays. The Encounter Bay run chase started poorly as they slumped to 3/10 before Cam Lintern (21) and Max Longhurst (14) steadied the ship to leave the Bays needing 20 runs to win and claim the minor premiership. Daniel Hockham (2/5), Simon Roberts (2/21) and Sean McIvor (2/28) were the wicket takers for Willunga. Port Elliot have put themselves in a good position to claim a top-two spot after posting 8/231 on day one of their clash with McLaren Districts at McLaren Vale. It was an excellent team batting display by the Bloods with Scott Hannam (28), Ethan Spriggs (34) and Ben Griffiths (40) making good contributions. But it was skipper Joel Harris who was the standout with 79 from 129 balls (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6), his third half century of the season. Harris is having a career-best season with 485 runs at an average of 69.29. The Crushers used nine bowlers with skipper Luke Goodieson (3/23) and Keith Schofield (2/43) the multiple wicket takers. Mt Compass will be pushing hard for an outright victory on day two of their clash with Victor Harbor at Burgess Oval after ending the first day on 3/108 in pursuit of the Vipers’ first innings total of 117. An outright win for the Bulls would be enough to catapult them into the finals. Earlier, Victor Harbor batted first with veteran Tim Watson top scoring with 42 from 71 balls (7 x 4’s). No other Vipers batsman reached 20 as they were bowled out for 117 in the 48th over. Ethan Osmond (3/16), Bailey Baldock (3/17), Ethan Anderson (2/6) and Aaron Dalitz (2/9) were the wicket takers for ‘Compass’. The home side wasted no time setting after the small total as Jamarley Daley (49) and Matthew East (43 not out) helped their side to within 10 runs of first innings points at stumps. Myponga-Sellicks and Yankalilla are locked in a tight tussle after day one of their clash at Myponga was dominated by the bowlers. The Mudlarks batted first but could only manage a total of 99 before being bowled out in the 56th over. Michael Tomlinson top scored with 22 to continue his consistent season. Aaron Smith was the best of the Yankalilla bowlers with the excellent figures of 4/27 from a marathon 23 overs. Leg-spinner Luke Bartlett was the other multiple wicket taker with 2/9 from nine overs. The Tigers had 14 overs to negotiate before stumps and they finished on 2/13. It could be a nervous run chase on Saturday with a win for the Tigers securing their finals berth. However, a loss would leave them at the mercy of other results. Needing a win to keep their finals hopes alive, Goolwa batted first against Noarlunga and posted 137 at Old Noarlunga before being bowled out in the 69th over. It was tough going in the first session with the Magpies 2/36 at the tea break thanks to some tight bowling from the Shoes. Luke Giddings (38) and Jayden Crees (22) put on a handy 33-run seventh wicket stand, while four other batsmen reached double figures without going onto a big score. Travis Bronstein bowled an excellent spell for the Shoes, claiming 5/44 from 20.4 overs, while Cam Bullard took 2/20 (7).

Strathalbyn v Hahndorf - ‘A’ Grade WomenThe first time this season that an A women game was played on a Saturday the weather turned out to be quite warm. Strathalbyn came up to bat first and had hits to Buttsy Milne and Gab Martin with the only safe hit to Tash Mayes but with Hahndorf’s third baser Chloe Davis taking a catch, short stop Abby Bastian picking off the runner at second and a K2 to pitcher/catcher combo of Rylee Zobel to Georgia King, Martin and Mayes were left stranded on base unable to score. Hahndorf’s turn at bat was also scoreless with Strath’s pitcher Tess Norris fielding and throwing to the safe glove of Milne at first, combining with catcher Martin for a K2 and a line drive catch to third baser Mayes sending them from the diamond. The second dig for Strath was also scoreless even with Norris getting on to base due to Hahndorf making another two K2’s and picking the runner off at second base. Hahndorf had hits to Mia Oats-Willis, Charlotte Fairley and Bastian in the second bringing home three runs with Strath’s left fielder Rebecca Sims taking a catch, Mayes now at short stop picking off the runner at second and Norris again making an out at first to end the innings.Strath were looking to get a score on the board but even with a walk to Ashlee Peterson and hits to Kim Cutting, Milne and Mayes they were unable to bring anyone home with Hahndorf making an out at first, a K2 and a great running catch in foul territory by Davis. Strath were again able to hold Hahndorf scoreless in the third with another line drive catch by Mayes and new catcher Cutting taking two high ball catches to send them back to the dugout. The intention for Strath to make runs in the fourth was there with some great swinging but apart from Emily Eglitis they were unable to connect and get on with Hahndorf making another two K2’s and an out at first to again hold them scoreless. Hahndorf came out swinging in their turn at bat and with multiple safe hits, great base running and Oats-Willis gaining a home run it brought in seven runs which was enough to call the game with the only out being made by Milne fielding and playing her base. Hahndorf came out on top on a hot day 10 runs to Strathalbyn 0.Strathalbyn v Macclesfield - ‘C’ Grade Women On a warm day Macclesfield were up to bat first and produced hits to Claudia Lions and Karlyn McLeod which helped push Amabel Lions around the bases for the only run of the innings with Strathalbyn’s third baser Rebecca Sims making an out at first, working well with short stop Annabel McGregor for an out at third and McGregor fielding and throwing to the safe glove of Lavinia Seymour at first. Strath came in to bat and through some good choices they gained some walks, had a safe bunt to Sims and a single to Laura Sneath and with some great base stealing they were able to bring in seven runs with Maccy’s short stop C. Lions making an out at first and left fielder A. Lions taking a catch and quickly throwing to third to catch the runner out of their ground for a double play. The second innings for Maccy was three up three down with Seymour involved in all three outs first taking a catch, then fielding and playing her own base and then receiving the ball from pitcher Amy Bailey to send them from the diamond scoreless. Strath had safe hits to Sims, Amber Crawford and Sneath but they could only add one run with Maccy making another two outs at first and C. Lions fielding and making the tag on the runner to end the innings. The third batting dig for Maccy was facing first time pitcher Sneath and C. Lions had a safe hit and with some choosy batting again they got runners on and with some great base running they were able to bring home three runs with Strath’s Sims now at short stop making an out at first, taking a catch and then fielding and getting the runner out on second base. Strath’s third turn at bat produced a safe hit to Vanessa Kitto but they were only able to add one run to the tally with Maccy picking off a runner at second, making another out at first and catcher Zarlee Winitana fielding and getting the ball to first base for the third and final out of the innings and the game. Strath’s turn at bat produced singles to Cutting and Gab Martin with Rebekah Mayes hitting a double and with some great base stealing they brought home three runs with Masters making an out at first, pitcher Kel O’Brien taking a catch and finishing the innings off with a K2.The second dig for Masters got O’Brien onto base with a hit to the outfield but she was left stranded there with Cutting taking another catch and two K2’s to hold them scoreless again.
