Willunga has knocked Mount Compass out of the finals race after a thrilling one-point win in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) elimination final at Myponga yesterday. Scores were tied at the end of ‘regular’ time, so extra time was needed, with Willunga coming out on top 11.14 (80) to 12.7 (79). The game was tight throughout with scores level at halftime, while Mount Compass held a one-point lead at the last change. Daniel Lee kicked three goals for the Demons, while Mount Compass star forward Tom Pinyon slotted six majors. Daniel Bass was named best player for Willunga and he was well supported by Jack Redden, Sam Renney, Nick Scanlan and Jake Shirvington. Pinyon was named best for ‘Compass’ with support from Ziggy Vitkunas, Jordan Hooper, Shane Heatley and Rilee Endersby.Myponga-Sellicks defeated Victor Harbor by three points to advance to the second semi-final where they’ll face reigning premier McLaren Districts on Saturday. The Mudlarks are looking for their first ‘A’ grade flag since 1984 and are now just one win away from the decider. On Saturday at McLaren Vale, Myponga-Sellicks trailed by six points at quarter time, before an excellent second term saw them take a handy 17-point lead at halftime. ‘Victor’ kicked six goals to four in the second half, but the Mudlarks hung on to win 11.10 (76) to 11.7 (73). Jake Spinks was dangerous up forward for Myponga-Sellicks with four goals, while Sam Basham also kicked four goals for the ‘Roos. Reigning premier McLaren Districts wrapped up the minor premiership after a convincing 107-point win against Yankalilla during round 18 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. The Eagles led by 40 points at halftime, before kicking 10 unanswered goals in the second half to win 18.13 (121) to 2.2 (14). The Eagles had 10 different goalkickers including Lachlan Camm and Jamie Smith who kicked three goals each. Tim Dellatorre and Mitchell Schwerdt kicked the two goals each for the Tigers. Best players for McLaren Districts included Sam Lawrie, Todd McKay, Max Gill, Tarak Redigolo and Brett Ellis. Yankalilla were best served by Angus Weir, Jack Fitzgerald and Chris Clark. Encounter Bay finished their season on a high after defeating Strathalbyn by 36 points in a high-scoring contest. The Bays trailed by 15 points at halftime, but kicked 15 goals to seven in the second half to win 21.12 (138) to 15.12 (102). The Bays had 10 different goalkickers including Kyron Pepper (5) and skipper Tyson Neale (4). Ben Simounds kicked six goals for the Roosters to take out the GSFL goalkicking with 71 majors for the season. Best players for Encounter Bay included Callum Tonkin, Pepper, Fraser Tonkin, Tyler Baldock and Ben Davis. Best for ‘Strath’ were Lachlan Butler, Simounds, Marc Elliott, Will Stafford and Fletcher Duffield. Willunga will go into Sunday’s elimination final against Mount Compass full of confidence after a huge 203-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot in the final round. The Demons led by 34 points at quarter time, 99 points at halftime, and 157 points at the last change, before winning 36.21 (237) to 5.4 (34). Danny Juckers kicked 11 goals for the Demons in a best-on-ground display, while Jed Redden kicked eight majors. James Fry kicked two goals for the Magpies. Joining Juckers in the best players for Willunga were Sam Renney, Jack Redden, Cam Hutchens and Jed Redden. Best for the Magpies were Jesse Bates, Rory Hausser and Billy Payne. Victor Harbor tuned up for finals action with a comfortable 51-point win at home against Langhorne Creek. Accurate kicking from Langhorne Creek kept them in the contest in the first half as they led 9.0 (54) to 7.9 (51) at the main break. ‘Victor’ came out firing in the third term, kicking 11 goals to one, to take a commanding 59-point lead at the last change, before winning 21.14 (140) to 14.5 (89). Daniel Stock kicked seven goals for the ‘Roos and Sam Basham kicked four. Darcy Clifford also kicked four goals for the Hawks. Harrison Cock and Sam Kennedy kicked two goals each for the Mudlarks, while Tom Pinyon kicked three goals for Mount Compass. Flagstaff Hill completed an undefeated minor round campaign after defeating Noarlunga by 70 points during round 18 action in the Southern Football League (SFL) yesterday. ‘Flaggies’ dominated the minor round, with their average winning margin a whopping 74 points. It was another ominous performance from the Falcons as they won every quarter on their way to a 15.11 (101) to 4.7 (31) triumph. The Falcons had 11 different goalkickers with Sam Jacobs leading the way with three goals (53 for the season). Best players for Flagstaff Hill included Aiden Grayson, Brendan Hillier, Brad Kirk, Josh Rosman and Nathan Beenham. Best players for Noarlunga were Nathan Schulz, Josh Beard, Jake Anderson, Nick Robertson and Bailey Hann.Christies Beach left it to the last game of the season to register their first win of 2023 after defeating Cove by nine points at Bice Oval. It was the Saints’ first win since the 6th of August, 2022. At halftime it appeared Cove would register their sixth victory of 2023 as they led by 14 points, but Christies Beach came out firing in the third term, kicking five unanswered goals, to lead by 19 points at the last change. The Cobras won the last quarter, but it was to no avail as the Saints ran out winners 11.9 (75) to 9.12 (66). Josh Newnham kicked four goals for ‘Christies’, while Lincoln Holder kicked two goals for the Cobras. Marc Borholm dominated up forward for Reynella with nine goals (45 for the season), while Billy Cook kicked two goals for Port Noarlunga. Mount Compass secured their finals berth for 2023 after defeating fellow finals aspirant Victor Harbor by 24 points at Mount Compass during round 17 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. The win for the Bulldogs was set up by a dominant first quarter that saw the home side kick 4.4 to 0.0 to take a 28-point lead to quarter time. The rest of the game was even with ‘Compass’ eventually winning 9.8 (62) to 5.8 (38). Klaus Simons, Ziggy Vitkunas and Tom Vitkunas were named best for the Bulldogs, while Tom Pinyon (in his 200th game), Nathan Hicks, Lochie Nash and Ziggy Vitkunas all kicked two goals. Best for ‘Victor’ were Jesse McKinnon, Dylan Kleinig, Mitch Brook, Zac Dowling and Heath Treloar.Langhorne Creek kept their slim finals hopes alive with a crushing 199-point win at home against Goolwa/Port Elliot. The Hawks led by 46 points at quarter time, 92 points at halftime and 158 points at the final change, before winning 32.26 (218) to 3.1 (19). Langhorne Creek had nine different goalkickers with Darcy Clifford (6), Coby Helyar (6), Jarrod Kellock (5) and Jackson Dalitz (4) all getting in on the act. Reece Slape kicked two goals for the Magpies. Clifford, Kellock, Helyar, Lachlan Bates and Troy Blackwell were named best for the dominant Hawks. The win wraps up the minor premiership for the Eagles. The Bays got off to a good start to lead by 19 points at quarter time and they were still ahead by 13 points at the last change. With the game slipping away, the reigning premiers swung into action, kicking four goals to one in the final quarter, to win 7.8 (50) to 6.13 (49). Jake Stummer-Harvey was the only multiple goalkicker on the ground with two goals for McLaren Districts. Noarlunga won their 13th game of the season with a 40-point win over reigning premier Reynella during round 17 action in the Southern Football League (SFL) at Old Noarlunga on Saturday. The game was tight at halftime with Reynella holding sway by four points. The Shoes took over in the second half, kicking eight goals to one, to win 11.8 (74) to 5.4 (34). Nick Mott (3), Callum Gaspari (2) and Terry Kathopoulis (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Noarlunga, while their best players included Zac Williams, Jarrad Liebelt, Jake Anderson, Jamison Snelling and Sammual Miller. Best for Reynella were Dylan Roser, Jack Ball, Alex Lawley, Daniel Whitaker and Tyler Davies.Flagstaff Hill continued their undefeated season with a comprehensive 126-point win against Port Noarlunga on Saturday. Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill made a statement to the competition with a hard-fought seven-point win over second placed Port Noarlunga during round 15 action in the Southern Football League (SFL) ‘A’ Grade Women’s competition on Saturday. The Falcons trailed by a point at the last change before kicking the only goal of the final term to win 3.4 (22) to 2.3 (15). Best players for ‘Flaggies’ included Jasmin Partridge, Elizabeth Johnson, Emily Brockhurst, Brooke Watson and Amelia Morriss. Best for ‘Porties’ were Kalahni Howes, Bree Chapman, Jolie Malinowski, Shakira Dolman and Charli Faulkner.Cove kept their finals hopes alive with a comprehensive 168-point win over Hackham last Friday night.
