Hills Softball Association Under 14 Mixed (Strathalbyn v Redsox)Strath were up to bat first and were able to gain some walks which helped bring Tallera Spinks and Kodi Goodwin home before Redsox shortstop Sam Hancock took a catch and quickly threw to first to catch the runner short of their ground for a double play and then a play at home was the third out. Redsox came in to bat and again walks were gained with Aiden Storr and Nathan Golder both getting hits which all helped to bring in the full seven runs with no outs made by Strath. The second batting dig for Strath also gained more walks with some good choices of whether to hit or leave and this gained Strath a further four runs with Eva Eglitis and Sam Baker among those to get home with Redsox making two outs at first and a K2 to Golder and catcher Zaxton Sward. Redsox turn at bat gained some walks also through good choices with safe hits to Hancock, Storr and Ashwin Sharma. Josh Jones (2/13) has both wickets for the Magpies. Port Elliot are also in the box seat to go 4-0 to start the season after bowling Victor Harbor out for 114 on day one of their clash on the turf at ‘Victor’. The Bloods were made to battle for the last 90 minutes of the day however, as they went to stumps on 5/73, still 42 runs short of victory. Earlier the Vipers were sent in and were in early strife at 3/20 before skipper Josh Boyko (42) and Lachlan Hywood (29) added 69 for the fourth wicket. This was the only joy for the home team with the bat though, as they lost their last 7/25 to be bowled out in the 46th over for 114. Off-spinner Ben Griffiths was the standout bowler for Port Elliot with the fine figures of 5/18 from 9.1 overs and he was ably supported by skipper Joel Harris (2/12) and Ben Martin (2/13). Kangarilla bounce to second win of the season in Hills Cricket

05 November 2023, 8:30 AM

Kangarilla won their second game of the season yesterday following a thrilling one-wicket victory against Mylor during round four action in the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) at Kangarilla. Mylor won the toss and decided to bat first with the decisive partnership of the innings coming between Tom Plant and Ben James. This pair came together at 2/35 and added 90 runs for the third wicket before James was dismissed for 36 (57 balls). Plant went on to top score with 84 from 134 balls (8 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) as the Pipers finished on 6/174 from their 45 overs. Ryan Grimmond was the leading wicket taker for the home side with 3/41 (9). The run chase was tight throughout with ‘Kangies’ skipper Lachlan Knight (52), Grimmond (36) and Che Martinsen (28) putting their side in a good position at 2/97 with 15 overs remaining. Three quick wickets fell and at 5/117 it was anyone’s game with Ben Ryan coming to the crease. Ryan held his nerve and was still at the crease as the final over commenced with his side requiring six runs for victory. Two run-outs left the scores level with ‘Kangies’ nine wickets down before Ryan hit the last ball of the game to the boundary to see his side over the line. Ryan finished with 37 not out from 27 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Oliver Barnes (2/32) was the leading wicket taker for Mylor, while skipper Michael Warburton bowled a miserly spell of 0/12 from his nine overs. The giant-killing run of Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) has continued after they defeated reigning premier Stirling by 25 runs at Stirling Oval yesterday. The home side won the toss and sent SCIB in and the move paid early dividends with the visitors slumping to 3/23 in the ninth over. Enter the in-form Aaron Thompson who partnered up with Andy Adams in a game-changing 87-run stand for the fourth wicket before Adams departed for 48 (93 balls). Ethan Dinning (22) then added 49 for the seventh wicket as Thompson continued on his merry way, bringing up a brilliant century, before finishing with 100 not out from 93 balls (13 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Thompson has now scored 208 runs this season without being dismissed! SCIB were eventually bowled out in the 45th over for 213. Harrison Webb (2/6), Chris Shaw (2/31) and Charlie Fryer (2/44) were the multiple wicket takers for Stirling. The Eagles' run chase started well with Jack Read (18) and Raph Baker (14) adding 34 runs for the first wicket, before three quick wickets saw the reigning premier in trouble at 3/46. The Eagles needed a partnership and they duly got one as Webb and Jacob Kemp came together to resurrect the innings. This pair added 134 runs for the fourth wicket and with five overs left, Stirling sat at 4/180 and needed 34 runs to win. The 41st over of the innings, bowled by Adams, completely turned the game on its head as four wickets fell with Stirling losing their last 6/8 to be bowled out in the 44th over for 188. Webb top scored with 76 from 80 balls (9 x 4’s, 1 x 6), while Kemp finished with 52 from 71 balls (4 x 4’s). Adams (3/38) completed a fine all-round double, while Suresh Sripada (2/16) and Sam Hill (2/30) chimed in with a couple of wickets each. Aldgate remained undefeated and on top of the ladder after securing a five-wicket win at Bridgewater yesterday. Bridgewater won the toss and elected to bat first with the trusty pair of Justin Summerill (20) and Luke Hoyle (45) adding 44 runs for the first wicket, before Jackson Hooper (24) put on 47 with Hoyle as the Raiders reached 1/91. After Shaun Atkins (2/26) removed Hoyle, Jack Woollard (2/41) made a double strike to have Aldgate on top with the home side at 4/99. Enter Aldgate skipper Jake Turnbull who completely turned the game in his side's favour with a spell of 6/11 from 8.5 overs including a hat trick to end the innings! After a promising start, Bridgewater lost their last 9/46 to be bowled out for 137 in the 39th over. Chris Ashby (21) was the other Bridgewater batsman to pass 20. Aldgate’s run chase didn’t start well with the in-form Josh Callaghan out first ball of the innings. Mitch Thomas (27) and James Anthony (16) steadied the ship, but at 5/66, the ‘Gaters’ were in strife. Playing-coach Atkins joined teenager Max Bilsborow at the crease and proceeded to smash an unbeaten 50 from just 32 balls. His innings included five boundaries and three ‘maximums’. Bilsborow contributed an important 26 not out (2 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as the winning runs came up in the 37th over. Jarrad Tait (2/16) and Summerill (2/31) were the most successful Bridgewater bowlers.Mount Lofty won their second game of the season and at the same time consigned Meadows to a 0-4 start to the season. The Redcaps batted first and posted a competitive total of 5/204 from their 45 overs. Josh Mitchell (37), Nick Justice (32) and Ryan Pistola (31) all made useful contributions, but it was left to skipper Jordan Neis-Beer to play the critical innings for his side. Neis-Beer came in at 1/5 and made a patient 84 from 127 balls (4 x 4’s). Brad Louch (2/35) was the leading wicket taker for Meadows. The Bulldogs acquitted themselves well in the first half of the run chase as they reached 3/89 in the 22nd over. Mitchell (1/19) claimed the big wicket of Rohan Reid for 42 (56 balls) and from then on it was all Mount Lofty as Meadows lost 7/53 to be bowled out for 142. Louch (26) and Chad Dawe (21) also made useful contributions for Meadows. Will Healey (3/26), Peter Giannes (3/50) and Connor Milde (2/15) were the leading wicket takers for Mount Lofty. Ladder (after round 4)Aldgate 24, Scott Creek Ironbank 24, Stirling 12, Bridgewater 12, Kangarilla 12, Mount Lofty 12, Mylor 0, Meadows 0.Round 5 fixtures (home teams named first)Meadows v BridgewaterScott Creek Ironbank v KangarillaStirling v Mount LoftyAldgate v Mylor

Razorbacks & Warriors notch their first wins of the season in Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket

30 October 2023, 8:00 AM

Nairne won their first game of the season after defeating Macclesfield by one run in a thrilling round four encounter in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) on Saturday. The Razorbacks won the toss and decided to bat first on a windy day at the picturesque Nairne Oval, and they were soon in dire straits as they slumped to 5/49. The home side badly needed a partnership as the dangerous Shane Kenney joined opening batsman Richard Boscence, who was playing a lone hand for his side. This pair added 57 runs for the sixth wicket before Boscence went for an important 40 from 65 balls (4 x 4’s). Kenney went on to top score with a typically hard-hitting 44 from 29 balls (5 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) as Nairne recovered to post a total of 153 before being bowled out in the 43rd over. Lachlan Barrett was the pick of the Redbacks bowlers with figures of 4/29 (9) and he was well supported by Luke Jones (2/2) and Josh Lewis Burns (2/13). The Redbacks lost an early wicket before David Caddle (17) and Barrett (47) combined for an important 55-run stand for the second wicket. Once this partnership was broken, regular wickets fell with ‘Maccy’ in trouble at 6/104. Tom Keogh (23) got the Redbacks back into the game before a flurry of late wickets saw them come up agonisingly short. Nairne had six wicket takers with William Brooks (2/19), Caleb Walker (2/31) and Nick Williams (2/33) leading the way.Woodside also won their first game of 2023/24 with a tight three-wicket victory against Hahndorf. Bridgewater made it two wins on the trot after a thrilling nine-run win in a low-scoring contest at Kangarilla yesterday during round three action in the Hills Cricket Association (HCA). The Raiders batted first with Ty Watson (22) and Luke Hoyle (19) getting their side off to a good start with a 40-run opening stand. Regular wickets fell after the opening partnership as the Raiders slumped to 5/70, before Jarrad Tait scored a quickfire 36 from 28 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Ultimately, Bridgewater were bowled out in the 35th over for just 125. Troy Martinsen (3/19), Steve Featherstone (3/34) and Ryan Grimmond (2/26) were the leading wicket takers in a good bowling performance from Kangarilla. The Kangarilla run chase was underpinned by a patient innings from Grimmond, who made 60 from 110 balls (7 x 4’s), but he received very little support with Featherstone (11) and Kyal Walton (11) the only other batsmen to reach double figures. Despite this, ‘Kangies’ looked the likely winner at 7/115, before they lost their last 3/1 to be bowled out in the 42nd over for 116. Watson was the hero at the end for the Raiders with 3/23 (5.5 overs), while Tait completed a fine double with a match-winning 5/17 from his nine overs. Aldgate’s perfect start to the season continued with a comfortable eight-wicket win against Mount Lofty at Aldgate Oval. The ‘Gaters’ now sit on top of the ladder with three wins from as many games. Mount Lofty won the toss and elected to bat first with Josh Healey (20) and Nick Justice (22) adding 35 runs for the first wicket. Redcaps skipper Jordan Neis-Beer (20) and Connor Milde (18) made useful contributions, while Ryan Pistola top scored with a patient 43 from 86 balls (3 x 4’s). The Redcaps were bowled out for 156, which was probably 50+ runs less than they’d hoped for. Five Aldgate bowlers took wickets with Matty Hansen (4/26) the standout. Skipper Jake Turnbull (2/25) and Shaun Atkins (2/26) were the other multiple wicket takers for the home side. The inform pair of Mitch Thomas and Josh Callaghan got Aldgate off to another good start with a partnership of 64 before Callaghan went for 17 (28 balls). Turnbull and Thomas then added 27 for the second wicket as Thomas reached his second half century in a row before being removed for 55 from 47 balls (7 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). ‘Turbo’ continued on to make 54 not out from 58 balls (6 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) with teenager Max Bilsborow chipping in with 16 not out as the winning runs came up in the 29th over. Matt Pistola (1/13) and Milde (1/33) were the wicket takers for Mount Lofty. Reigning premier Stirling registered their second win of the 2023/24 campaign after a three-wicket win over Meadows at Stirling Oval. The home side won the toss and elected to field as Luke Tonkin and Rohan Reid opened the batting for the Bulldogs. This pair wasn’t separated until they’d added 127 runs in the 26th over with Tonkin going for 28 (72 balls). Reid continued on to top score with 87 from 86 balls (12 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s), his first half century of the season, but from 0/127 Meadows were dismissed for 194. Brad Louch (29) and Ryan Clarke (13) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures. Veteran Chris Shaw (4/28), Connor McFadyen (3/32) and Ned Hopgood (2/22) were the chief destroyers for the Eagles, while Pete Fryer bowled a miserly spell of 0/16 from his nine overs. The Eagles’ run chase started in a blaze of glory with 21 runs coming from the first over of the innings bowled by Louch, while the 50-run partnership between Jack Read and Raph Baker came up in just the sixth over! Louch eventually got his man as he dismissed Read for a whirlwind 46 from just 29 balls (6 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). After the fast start, three wickets fell and it was an even contest with the home side at 3/82 as Harrison Webb joined his skipper Jack Pick at the crease. This pair ultimately put on a match-winning stand worth 83 runs for the fourth wicket with Pick making 44 (72 balls) Webb went on to top score with 48 not out (48 balls) with the winning runs coming up in the 37th over. Clarke (3/25) and Louch (2/51) were the leading wicket takers for Meadows. Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) are the other undefeated team after three rounds after a tight 21-run win against Mylor at Cherry Gardens yesterday. SCIB won the toss and decided to bat first and had a number of handy partnerships with Adam Shearwood (39), Sam Hill (23) and Tom Watton (18) all contributing in the top order. For the second time this season, Aaron Thompson played the pivotal knock of the innings with 52 not out from 49 balls (4 x 4’s). It was Thompson’s second half century of the season and it helped lift his side to a healthy total of 8/186 from 45 overs. Jesse Cooper (4/35) and Ben James (2/34) were the multiple wicket takers for Mylor, while Oliver Barnes bowled an economical spell of 0/11 from his nine overs. Mylor got themselves into a winning position in the run chase as they reached 2/113 in the 25th over with contributions from Ben James (24) and Todd Dellatorre (20), but it was the wicket of Shane Maslin that turned the game in Scott Creek Ironbank’s favour. Maslin top scored with 44 from 72 balls (6 x 4’s), but his dismissal precipitated a collapse of 8/52 as Mylor were bowled out in the 40th over for 165. Five SCIB bowlers took wickets with Watton the standout with 4/28 (8), while Beau Thomas snared 2/30 (9). Ladder (after round 3)Aldgate 18, Scott Creek Ironbank 18, Stirling 12, Bridgewater 12, Kangarilla 6, Mount Lofty 6, Mylor 0, Meadows 0.Round 4 fixtures (home teams named first)Bridgewater v AldgateKangarilla v MylorMeadows v Mount LoftyStirling v Scott Creek Ironbank
