Mylor take major scalp in Hills Cricket

12 February 2023, 8:00 AM

Mylor continued their good recent form with an eight-wicket win against perennial powerhouse Meadows during round 15 action at Meadows yesterday. The home side were under early pressure as they slipped to 3/36 with Mylor opening bowler Oliver Barnes bowling an excellent of spell of 2/5 from six overs. Haydn Reid and Brad Louch (14) then combined for the best partnership of the innings as they added 33 runs for the fourth wicket before Reid went for 44 (88 balls). The Bulldogs lost their last 7/35 to be bowled out in the 40th over for 104. All five Mylor bowlers took wickets with Oliver Sendy (3/24), Michael Warburton (2/14) and Ben James (2/29) the other multiple wicket takers. James and Alex Kern got the Pipers off to an excellent start with a 66-run opening stand before James went for 46 (81 balls). Kern made a patient 37 (107 balls) and Shane Maslin chipped in with 21 not out (30 balls) as the winning runs came up in the 37th over. David Bates (1/19) and Callan Blackwell (1/24) were the wicket takers for Meadows. Aldgate moved back inside the top-four with a comfortable six-wicket victory at Kangarilla. The home side batted first and were in all sorts of trouble as they slumped to 5/27. Brodie May joined veteran Steve Featherstone at the crease and this pair set about resurrecting the innings. They put on 68 runs for the sixth wicket before ‘Feathers’ went for 33 (66 balls). May went on to top score with 36 (82 balls) as ‘Kangies’ lost their last 5/19 to be bowled out for 114. Five Aldgate bowlers took wickets with Matt Hansen the pick of them with 3/11 (8.5). Frank Clements (2/16) and Luke Smet (2/25) were the other multiple wicket takers for the ‘Gaters’. Kangarilla had a slight ‘sniff of victory’ as Aldgate were 3/52 at one stage before Clements joined Josh Callaghan at the crease. This pair put the game beyond doubt with a 60-run stand for the fourth wicket before Clements went for 42 (39 balls). Callaghan finished with 49 not out (102 balls) as the winning runs came up in the 35th over. Ryan Grimmond (1/14 off 8 overs) was the pick of the Kangarilla bowlers. Stirling moved up to second spot on the HCA ladder with an excellent six-wicket win in a high scoring encounter at Bridgewater, The home side batted first and were in early strife at 3/21 with left-arm spinner Pete Fryer (3/39) doing most of the damage. Bridgewater settled through Jarrad Tait (26) and Will Fearnhead, with this pair adding 67 runs for the fourth wicket. After Tait departed, Fearnhead and Liam Sutcliffe put on 46 runs for the fifth wicket, until Fearnhead was dismissed for 69 (72 balls). A third good partnership in a row, worth 50 runs, between Thomas Miller (31 off 33) and Sutcliffe (41 not out off 87) lifted the Raiders to a competitive total of 7/213 from their 45 overs. Charlie Fryer (2/28) was the other multiple wicket taker for the Eagles. Harrison Webb and Daniel Gonzalez got Stirling off to a fast start with an opening stand of 88 off just 81 balls before Webb went for 37 (40 balls). Josh Cox (23) and Gonzalez added 71 runs for the third wicket before ‘Speedy’ was dismissed for 86 from 95 balls. His innings included five boundaries and six sixes. Bridgewater had a slight opening after Cox and Gonzalez were dismissed but Pete Fryer (46 not out)  and Jacob Kemp (13 not out) put paid to this with an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 59 runs. The winning runs came up via a six from Fryer with 14 balls remaining. Tait was the standout bowler for Bridgewater with 4/20 from his nine overs.Mount Lofty moved a game clear on top of the ladder with a hard-fought 22-run win against Scott Creek ironbank (SCIB) at Heathfield. It was tough going early for the home side with both openers back in the sheds with the score at 2/6. Redcaps skipper Jordan Neis-Beer was joined by the in-form Adam Carthew in what would be a crucial partnership. This pair added 83 for the third wicket before Neis-Beer went for 35 (88 balls). Carthew continued on to top score with 60 (104 balls) and Connor Milde chimed in with a handy 27 (30 balls), as Mount Lofty finished with 6/162 from their 45 overs. Ben McGowan (2/29) was the sole multiple wicket taker for SCIB. Scott Creek Ironbank battled hard with Adam Shearwood (38), Sam Hill (37) and Andy Adams (30) giving their team a chance before they eventually lost their last 7/18 to be bowled out in the final over for 140. Carthew continued his career-best season with 4/26 (9) and now has 412 runs and 34 wickets for the season! Mount Lofty all-rounder Adam Carthew has led his side to a 29-run win against Meadows, as the Redcaps took over on top of the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ladder following round 14 action at Heathfield on Saturday. Carthew top scored for Mount Lofty with 58 not out from 63 balls as his side posted what appeared a sub-par score of 5/130 from their 45 overs. Ryan Pistola (19), Jordan Neis-Beer (15) and Tim Noble (14 not out) also made handy contributions for the home side. David Bates (2/9) was the only multiple wicket taker for the Bulldogs. Meadows got off to a fair start with Rohan Reid (20) and Haydn Reid (8) adding 33 for the first wicket. A collapse of 7/31 however, saw Meadows in deep trouble at 7/64. The dangerous Chad Dawe gave his side a sniff of victory with a hard-hitting 43 from 42 balls (2 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s), but it wasn’t enough as the visitors were bowled out for 101 in the 29th over. Carthew completed a man-of-the-match performance with 6/19 (7.3), his seventh five-wicket haul in HCA ‘A’ grade ranks. ‘Carty’ is having an excellent season with 30 wickets at an average of 6.87, and has also made 352 runs at 39.11. Peter Giannes chimed in with 2/20 (9), including the big wicket of Rohan Reid.Bridgewater has stormed into the top-four after defeating Kangarilla by 44 runs, their fourth win on the trot. The Raiders batted first on their home deck and were in early trouble at 4/66. Jarrad Tait joined Jackson Hooper at the crease with this pair adding 81 runs for the fifth wicket before Tait departed for 41 from 34 balls (5 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Hooper continued on with Liam Sutcliffe (27 not out) to put on an undefeated seventh wicket stand worth 70 runs, as Bridgewater posted 6/225 from their 45 overs. Hooper finished with 102 not out from 90 balls (12 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). It was Hooper’s second ‘A’ grade ‘ton’. Jack Evans (2/40) was the only multiple wicket taker for Kangarilla. ‘Kangies’ were never really in the run chase as they battled their way to a total of 181 before being bowled out in the 42nd over. Ryan Grimmond (48), Ryan Smallman (45) and Steve Featherstone (22) were the major run scorers for Kangarilla. Veteran Luke Hoyle (3/7), Tait (2/22) and Liam Risson (2/43) led the way with the ball for the red-hot Raiders. Mylor won their third game of 2022/23 with a 23-run win at home against Uraidla. The Pipers batted first and got off to a good start with Ben James (20) and former Redbacks batsman Tom Plant putting on a 41-run opening stand. Plant was then joined by the inform Adrian Gaunt to add 85 runs for the second wicket before Plant went for 58 from 83 balls (7 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Gaunt continued on to top score with 63 from 73 balls (5 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) as Mylor put up a competitive 8/198 from their 45 overs. Renzo Gaetan was the pick of the Demons bowlers with the excellent figures of 3/12 from nine overs. Peter Wilson was the other multiple wicket taker with 2/5 (2). Uraidla appeared in a winning position with Wilson and skipper Michael Parker at the crease and the score on 2/149. The dismissal of Wilson for 80 (121 balls), brought an end to a 104-run third wicket stand with Parker (44 from 48 balls), and led to a dramatic collapse, with the Demons losing 8/26 to be bowled out for 175 in the 44th over. Veteran Matt Steadman was the destroyer with 5/31 (8.2) for an ever-improving Mylor outfit. Aldgate and Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) played out a thrilling tie at Aldgate Oval which sees both teams outside the top-four, but still in the hunt for a finals berth. The ‘Gaters’ batted first with Frank Clements (40), Josh Callaghan (40), Jake Turbull (32) and Mitch Thomas (25) all making handy contributions as Aldgate finished on 9/195 from their 45 overs. Beau Thomas (3/37), Andy Adams (2/24), Daniel Desengo (2/33) and Tom Watton (2/44) were the wicket takers for SCIB. Adam Shearwood (24) and Watton (18) were the best of the top-four batsmen, but when Shearwood went, SCIB were in strife at 4/54. Aaron Thompson joined Adams and this pair got their team back into the game with an 81-run partnership for the fifth wicket before Adams went for 47 (58 balls). Thompson then added 40 runs for the sixth wicket with Conor Lidstone (11) and at 5/175, SCIB looked home and hosed. Aldgate then claimed three more wickets and scores were tied with six balls remaining, but the visitors still had two wickets in hand and were sitting at 'odds-on' for victory. Enter Luke Smet (3/19) to bowl the last over. He dismissed Ben McGowan (14) with the first ball of the over, before removing Beau Thomas (0) with two balls remaining. The other wicket takers for Aldgate were Frank Clements (3/29), Callum Wauchope (2/50) and Matt Hansen (1/24). Stirling had the bye.Ladder - after round 14Mount Lofty 54, Meadows 51, Stirling 48, Bridgewater 39, Aldgate 36, Kangarilla 33, Scott Creek Ironbank 33, Mylor 24, Uraidla 18.Round 15 fixtures (11/2/23) - home team named firstBridgewater v StirlingMount Lofty v Scott Creek IronbankMeadows v MylorKangarilla v AldgateUraidla has the bye

Strathalbyn v Hahndorf (Hills Softball Association ‘A’ Grade)In their first game back after the break, the ‘A’ grade Women found themselves playing on a Saturday and were up to bat first. Hahndorf’s fielders were on top of things right from the start with pitcher Tahlia Larosa starting the game with a K2, short stop Megan Williams taking a catch and second baser Breanna Luxon fielding and throwing to first baser Nic Zobel for the third out to hold Strathalbyn scoreless. Hahndorf came in to bat and had hits to Zobel, Larosa and a two-baser to Peyton Daniels which helped bring in three runs with Strath’s left fielder Ashlee Peterson, centre fielder Rebekah Mayes and right fielder Emily Eglitis all taking catches to end the innings.Strath came in for their second turn at bat and had safe hits to Tessa Norris and Ashlee Peterson but they could not get around and get home with Hahndorf’s Larosa pitching well for two K2’s and centre fielder Michelle Davis taking a catch to hold them scoreless again. Hahndorf had safe hits to Rylee Zobel, Chloe Davis, Daniels, M.Davis and Luxon with Williams getting a home run which all brought in a further seven runs. Strath continued to work hard in the field with a catch taken at shortstop by Jarrah Taylor and Norris fielding off of her pitching to make two outs at first.Strath needed runs and even though Jordarna Wilks was patient and gained herself a walk she was left stranded on third base unable to convert with Hahndorf’s third baser Daniels making an out at first and Larosa taking a catch and then making the third out at first base. Strath were tight in the field during Hahndorf’s third turn at bat with a catch taken by Norris, another catch to Taylor and a K2 to end the innings holding them scoreless. The fourth dig for Strath produced a safe hit to Norris and a walk to Peterson before Larosa closed the innings out with three K2’s to once again hold them scoreless. Handorf were up to bat again and had safe hits to Kiera Trevorrow, C.Davis, Williams and a home run for Daniels which helped bring in four runs with Strath’s first baser Kelly Roe taking a catch and Taylor making another out at first before time and game were called with Hahndorf 14 defeating Strathalbyn 0.Strathalbyn v Redsox (Hills Softball Association ‘C’ Grade)In their first game back after the Christmas break, Strathalbyn fielded first and held Redsox scoreless with pitcher Rebecca Sims fielding and throwing to Kelly Roe at first base for two outs and left fielder Annabel McGregor getting the ball in quickly to Jackie Marsh for the third out. Strath came in to bat and gained walks to Jess Rumble, Heidi Samuel and Marsh with safe hits to McGregor and Hannah Jones but they could only bring one runner home with Redsox making an out at third, an infield fly called and third baser Kerri Hardy making the out at first to end the innings. The second batting dig for Redsox produced hits to Emma Thomson, Suvali Sharma, Elisa Heath, Sienna Golder and a three baser to Ash Hermsen to help bring in seven runs before Strath’s shortstop Rumble made the out at first, made a tag at second and Marsh fielded and threw to Roe at first for the third out to send them from the diamond. Strath were held scoreless in their second turn at bat with Redsox pitcher Hermsen fielding and throwing to first for two outs and second baser Mandy Bottroff also throwing to first to end the innings. The third batting innings for Redsox had safe hits to Hardy, Bottroff, Heath, Sienna Golder, Glenys Megson and Alexis Golder with a two baser to Sharma and another three baser to Hermsen which all helped to bring in a further five runs with Strath working hard in the field with a K2, and short stop Dani O’Brien and Nicole Filsell combining for the last two outs at third base. Strath needed to gain some runs but again Redsox fielders were too strong with Hermsen doing a great job fielding and throwing to first for another two outs and second baser Bottroff taking a catch to end the innings and the game with Redsox 12 defeating Strathalbyn 1.

Nairne leapfrogged Lobethal into second spot on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder after a low-scoring two-wicket win over the Tigers at Nairne Oval during round 14 action in the AEHCA on Saturday. Lobethal batted first and were in early trouble at 3/7, before Sam Graeber (38) and Tanner King (52) added 80 runs for the fourth wicket before Graeber was dismissed. From the relatively strong position at 3/87, the Tigers collapsed, losing their last 7/27 to be bowled out for 114. Left-arm spinner Matt Hein was the chief destroyer for Nairne with figures of 5/33 from his nine overs. He was well supported by brother Mitch (2/16) and Brodie Clarke (2/20). Nairne appeared to be cruising to victory with Shane Kenney (48) and Mitch Hein (13) taking the score to 2/70, before a collapse of 6/37 left the Razorbacks in a precarious position at 8/107. Thankfully for the home side, Zac Llewellyn (8 not out) and Matt Hein (5 not out) held their nerve to bring up the winning runs with 19 balls to spare. Mitch Weeks (2/12), Cameron Winen (2/23) and Dave Huxter (2/36) were the main wicket takers for Lobethal.Macclesfield kept their finals hopes alive with a comfortable 75-run win against Bremer/Callington at ‘Maccy’. Macclesfield batted first and posted a competitive 6/172 from their 45 overs. All-rounder Lachlan Barrett top scored with 54 not out, and he was ably supported by Kieran O’Connell (38) and Josh Lewis-Burns (33). Bremer/Callington were never in the run chase as they were bowled out for just 97 in the 25th over. Jai McMurtrie, with 48, was the only shining light with the bat for the Cobras. Six Redbacks bowlers took wickets with Joseph Lions (3/15), O’Connell (2/1) and Barrett (2/20) leading the way.Strathalbyn consolidated their spot in the top-four with a low-scoring 45-run win at Woodside. The Stallions batted first with vice-captain Matthew Harris making a crucial 51 from 94 balls (5 x 4’s). Mark Abbott (19) and Steve Schofield (18) made handy contributions as Strathalbyn struggled to 137 before being bowled out in the 44th over. Jeremy Druwitt (2/21), Shane Druwitt (2/29) and Nick Johns (2/38) were the leading wicket takers for the Warriors. Woodside were in all sorts of trouble in their run chase as they slumped to 5/47 before Will Dunstall (24) and Chris Baschiera (18) added 37 runs for the sixth wicket to get their team back in the game. The dismissal of Baschiera however, precipitated a collapse of 5/8 as the home side were bowled out for just 92 in the 33rd over. Lachlan Cutting (3/6) and Blake Beelitz (2/1) did the damage at the end of the innings for ‘Strath’, while skipper Brayden Gaiter dominated at the start with 3/15 from seven overs. The game between Hahndorf and Langhorne Creek was unable to be played at Mount Barker Summit due to the wet weather in the lead up to the weekend. Ladder - after round 14Langhorne Creek 50, Nairne 40, Lobethal 38, Strathalbyn 32, Macclesfield 26, Bremer/Callington 18, Woodside 16, Hahndorf 4. Round 15 fixtures (11/2/23) - home team named firstHahndorf v Bremer/CallingtonWoodside v Nairne Strathalbyn v Macclesfield Lobethal v Langhorne Creek

Hills Softball Association - Strathalbyn v Hahndorf (Under 14's)Hahndorf started strongly at bat, with discipline and successfully swinging at strikes to get a mixture of hits and walks. The inning started well for Strathalbyn’s defence with two early outs (a K2 and a put out to first). Charlie Askew pitched strongly to Lindsay Butler, and showed good ball control with the balls very close to the strike zone. But the morning showers proved a challenge and the rest of the batters walked. Hahndorf’s batting dig ended when their seventh run crossed home plate. At bat, Strath was hesitant to swing, which meant the first two batters walked to first, but the next three were out, with two strikeouts and a put out to first. As is often the case, Strath rallied in defence behind new pitcher Eva Eglitis pitching to Bailey Bradshaw. A flyball landing behind the pitcher was picked up by Meg Keenan to make a terrific tag out by Tellera Spinks at third base. Hahndorf made one safe hit and two more runs before Askew, now at first, lunged out from first base for a great catch before playing the base for a terrific double play. Strath were once again reluctant to swing the bat, which had the exact same result as the previous dig, a handful of walks, a put out and two strikeouts. In the final batting dig, Hahndorf continued their winning formula at bat (discipline at not swinging at balls, and connecting well when a strike was available) saw them bring in another seven runs. Highlights for Strath included great fielding in right field by Zoe Williams, almost making a put out to first. There were also some close attempts to defend stolen bases by Strath. The final score was Hahndorf 16 defeating Strathalbyn 5.

Chris Baschiera (1/12) was the sole wicket taker for the Warriors.Nairne all but confirmed their finals spot with a 79-run against Bremer/Callington at Callington on Saturday. Shoes end Goolwa's undefeated run in Great Southern Cricket

30 January 2023, 9:00 AM

Noarlunga consolidated their spot in the top-six with an 88-run win against the previously undefeated Goolwa during round 10 action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at Old Noarlunga on Saturday. The Shoes batted first and were in early trouble at 3/20 before Matthew Spaan joined Jason Scarff at the crease. This pair steadied the ship with a fourth wicket stand worth 43 runs before Spaan went for a patient 18 (43 balls). Sam Hehir then joined his skipper as Noarlunga slowly got on top, with Scarff continuing on to top score with a match-defining 80 not out from 118 balls (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Hehir was run out off the last ball of the innings for 33 (39 balls) as the home side reached 5/146 from their 40 overs. The partnership between Scarff and Hehir was worth 83 runs. Goolwa never got going in their run chase as they slumped to 6/26 at the 20-over drinks break. Cam Bullard bowled an impressive spell of 4/5 from his eight overs and he was backed up by Scarff who completed a fine all-round double, with the miserly figures of 2/2 from eight overs. Ben Stewart-Tonkin (2/17) also chimed in with a couple of scalps. Goolwa skipper Jayden Crees top scored for his side with 23 from 53 balls.Reigning premier Willunga kept their finals hopes alive with a thrilling four-run win against Encounter Bay on Saturday. The Demons batted first on their home deck and were under immense pressure as they struggled their way to 8/69 with Simon Roberts (33) and Matthew Impey (13) the only players to reach double figures. Willunga skipper Dan Hockham was joined by Matthew Bolton (6 not out) in what would turn out to be a match winning partnership worth 43 runs as the Demons finished with 8/112 from their 40 overs. Hockham went on to top score with 35 not out (1 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Sam Hoffmann bowled an excellent spell for Encounter Bay as he finished with 4/12 from his eight overs. Bays skipper Blake Bailey was also excellent with 3/3 from eight overs. Willunga had all the momentum as opening bowler Sean McIvor (2/10) got two early wickets before Cam Lintern and Bailey (27 not out) came together to add 45 runs for the fourth wicket, and the Bays seemed well on track for a win at 3/93. Mount Lofty has all but booked their ticket to finals action this season after defeating Aldgate by 16 runs during round 13 action in the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) at Aldgate yesterday. The Redcaps batted first and were in a bit of trouble early as they slipped to 3/55 before Ryan Pistola joined Adam Carthew at the crease. This pair added 100 runs for the fourth wicket before Pistola went for 67 from 68 balls (9 x 4’s, 4 x 6’s). Carthew went on to register his third half century of the season, with 52 from 59 balls (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Tim Noble (26 not out) and Peter Giannes (13 not out) made handy contributions at the end as Mount Lofty finished on 8/225 from their 45 overs. Felix Farmer (2/32) and Shaun Atkins (2/37) were the multiple wicket takers for the ‘Gaters’. The Aldgate run chase started in similar fashion with the home side in strife at 3/41 as Frank Clements joined Atkins. This would be the key partnership of the game, but when Atkins went for 47 off 32 balls (5 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s), Mount Lofty were well on top. Clements went on to make 48 off 43 balls (4 x 4’s, 4 x 6’s) before being dismissed with the score at 7/128. Teenager Farmer battled hard and eventually top scored with his maiden ‘A’ grade half century (51 not out from 62 balls) as Aldgate were bowled out in the 44th over for 209. Carthew completed a fine all-round game with 3/34 (9), while Connor Milde (2/34) and Giannes (2/43) were the other multiple wicket takers for the Redcaps.Bridgewater won their third game in a row to rocket into finals calculations following their dominant eight-wicket win against Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Cherry Gardens. Bridgewater won the toss and sent the home side in and the move paid immediate dividends as SCIB slumped to 3/5. Brad Smith (23) and Darcy Campbell (18) tried to add some respectability to the scorecard before their side were bowled out for just 68. Five Bridgewater bowlers took wickets with Liam Risson the standout with 4/11 (6.3). Jarrad Tait bowled a miserly spell to finish with 2/8 (9), while Luke Hoyle snared 2/13 (5). The Raiders wasted no time in the run chase with Hoyle (34 not out) and Justin Summerill (18 not out) bringing up the winning runs in the 17th over. Daniel Desengo (1/18) and Ben McGowan (1/19) were the wicket takers for Scott Creek Ironbank.Stirling has also just about wrapped up their spot in the finals after they won a thrilling contest against Mylor at Stirling Oval yesterday by one wicket. Mylor batted first and struggled from the start as they were 5/62 in the 21st over. Shane Maslin, batting down the order, joined Adrian Gaunt in an excellent partnership worth 90 runs for the sixth wicket which took their side to 5/152 from a rain-shortened innings of 40 overs. Gaunt top scored with 86 not out (121 balls) and Maslin made 39 not out (59 balls). Charlie Fryer with 2/23 from six overs was the only multiple wicket taker for the Eagles. Stirling looked well on track to win comfortably as Jack Pick (46) and Josh Cox (17) added 43 runs for the third wicket, before Pick combined with Pete Fryer (39) for a 39-run fourth wicket stand as Stirling reached 3/126. The wicket of Pick precipitated a collapse of 6/26 as the Eagles reached 9/152 with last man Ethan Penck joining veteran Julian Zytnik with scores tied. Penck held his nerve, scoring a boundary off the first ball he faced to get his side over the line. Tom Jensen (3/20) and Jesse Cooper (3/33) were the chief wicket takers for Mylor. The ‘Rohan Reid Roadshow’ continued yesterday with the Meadows skipper making his fifth century of the season, with the Bulldogs defeating Uraidla by 60 runs. Kovac finished with 47 from 64 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6), while Reid batted throughout the innings to make 101 not out from 128 balls (9 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s).
