Hills Softball Association ‘A’ Grade Women (Strathalbyn v Hills Heat Masters)After a mild night the previous Friday the teams shivered through the final game for the first half of the season with Masters up to bat first. They had a safe hit to Hantie Pretorious and a home run to Meg Chaplin to bring in two runs with Strath’s shortstop Kim Cutting making an out at first and Rebecca Sims taking two catches at left field to end the innings. Strath’s Cutting got on base but could not make it home as they were held scoreless in their first turn at bat with Masters making two outs at first and pitcher/catcher combo Kel O’Brien to Gab Martin getting a K2.Strath held Masters scoreless in the second with Cutting recovering quickly after a misfield to make the out at first, fielding and throwing to Ashlee Peterson at third for the second and Sims again taking a catch at left field to send them from the diamond. Sims made a safe hit to the outfield in Strath’s second turn at bat but could not make it around the diamond with Masters centrefielder Mis Ausman taking a catch, another K2 and a catch taken at first by Julie Briggs to end the innings.Masters added seven runs to their tally with a safe hit to Kerry Wilkinson, two basers to Chaplin and Martin and a three baser to Pretorious with Cutting making another out at first, Peterson also making an out at first and new pitcher Emily Eglitis fielding and making the third out at first base. Strath had safe hits to Eglitis and Chloe Zakelj and a walk to Cutting to bring in two runs in their third batting dig with Masters making another K2 and catches taken at first and third to send Strath from the diamond. The fourth turn at bat for Masters gained a further three runs and included a three base hit to Chaplin who was having a great game with the bat before Strathalbyn’s new pitcher Taminka Wilks fielded and threw to Cutting for an out at second who then quickly threw to Sims now at first for the double play and Cutting making the third out at first base. Rebekah Mayes had a big hit to centrefield to get her on base in Strath’s fourth batting dig but Masters second baser Kendall Langford took a catch, Pretorious now at shortstop threw to Langford to make an out at second and Langford making the third out at first base to hold Strath scoreless again.Strath held Masters to two runs in the fifth with Cutting making another out at first, pitcher/catcher combo of Wilks to Mayes working well gaining Wilks’ first K2 in A grade and Peterson fielding and throwing from third to first to end the innings. Cutting, having a great game, had a two base hit to left field and stole home for the only run of Strath’s fifth innings with Masters making an out at second and two outs at first leaving Zakelj stranded on second base. Final scores for the game were Masters 12 defeated Strathalbyn 3.Hills Softball Association ‘C’ Grade Women (Strathalbyn v Pirates)In the last game before the Christmas break, Pirates came in to bat and had two base hits to Kerry Elliot and Tracey Pearce and safe hits to Krista Elliot, Charlene Klenke, Debbie Taylor and Leonie Beattie which all helped to bring in the full ten runs with Strath’s pitcher Rebecca Sims fielding and throwing to Jackie Marsh at first for the out and then combining with catcher Hannah Jones for a K2. Strath came in to bat and gained a walk to Annabel McGregor, safe hits to Jess Rumble, Jo Falkland and Marsh and a two base hit to Sims but could only bring two runners home with Pirates third baser Klenke taking a catch, making an out at first and then fielding and playing her base to be involved in all three outs to end Strath’s innings.Pirates second turn at bat also produced ten runs with safe hits to Klenke, Kerry Elliot and Sue Stewart with a two baser to Stephanie Zuzolo with Strath’s fielders having to work hard in the field running down the balls but doing a great job especially being a player short with Rumble playing well at second base fielding and throwing to first for an out and then fielding and playing her base for the second. Strath’s second turn at bat was better with safe hits to Heidi Samuel, Jones, Sims and Marsh with Pirates making two outs at first and short stop Zuzolo taking a catch to end the innings and the game. Final scores were Pirates 20 defeated Strathalbyn 7.

Strath worked hard in the field with catcher Cutting quickly on to the bunt and throwing to Taminka Wilks at first, Taylor taking a catch at shortstop, and pitcher Tessa Norris getting her first K2 for the game.Strathalbyn came in for the second batting dig and got batters on to base, but Bears Hitchcock was pitching a great game with two K2’s and shortstop Meijer fielding and throwing to second for the out and sending Strath from the diamond with no added score. Bears came in to bat wanting to add to their score and had hits to Broughton and Krystal Sawyer, but they were left stranded with Strath’s Norris pitching a K2, Milne taking a catch at second and Cutting again quickly on to the ball and throwing to first for the third out sending them from the diamond scoreless. The third batting dig for Strathalbyn gained a walk to Norris but she was left on the diamond with Bears making two outs at first and Adamson taking another catch in the outfield to end the innings without adding to the score. Joel Webber took 3/32 (4) for the Bulls. In their second innings, Mount Compass reached 4/43 at stumps, still needing another 64 runs to make Port Elliot bat again. Simon Donaldson capped off a good day with 2/20 (10) in the second innings. Noarlunga took first innings points on day one of their clash with Aldinga at Old Noarlunga, and will push for an outright win on day two. Aldinga batted first and was bowled out in the 34th over for 84. Paul Inglis was the standout for the Sharks with a top score of 43. Dale Parrish (4/39) and Harry Jackson (3/5) were the chief wicket takers for the Shoes. Noarlunga had 36 overs to bat before stumps and ended up on 7/118, an overall lead of 34 runs. The Crushers batted first and got themselves into a reasonable position at 2/47, before losing their last eight wickets for just 43 runs to be bowled out for 90. McLaren Districts skipper Luke Goodieson top scored with a patient 28 from 130 balls. Simon Roberts was the standout bowler for Willunga with figures of 5/30 from 16.5 overs. The Demons got through to stumps on 1/91, with Luke Harding (36 not out) and Roberts (45 not out) at the crease. Encounter Bay are in the box seat in their home game against Yankalilla after posting a very competitive score of 5/230 from their 70 overs. The innings was underpinned by an excellent partnership between veteran Cam Lintern and teenager Finn Magor. Magor made his highest ‘A’ grade score with 68, while Lintern finished the innings with 91 not out. David Marks (23) chimed in with a handy knock as well. Macclesfield produced a stunning run chase yesterday to defeat Hahndorf by 10 wickets during round nine action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). The Redbacks travelled to Hahndorf and were set a stern task after the home side posted 9/198 from their allotted 45 overs. Skipper Ben Montgomerie (45), Greg Hassold (40) and Lachlan Huxtable (27) were the main run scorers for the Magpies. Six ‘Maccy’ bowlers took wickets with left-arm opener Lachie Barrett snaring 2/22 (9). The Redbacks opening pair of Kieran O’Connell and Tom Filsell came out for the run chase and they would not be separated until the 34th over after they had hit the winning runs with the Redbacks finishing on 0/200! Filsell ended up with 88 not out from 103 balls (9 x 4’s, 1 x 6), while O’Connell made 90 not out from 103 balls (14 x 4’s, 1 x 6). The Redbacks’ win, their fourth for the season, keeps them in touch with the top-four with one game to go before the Christmas/New Year break. Langhorne Creek remain undefeated at the halfway mark of the season following their comfortable 92-run win at home against Nairne. The Tigers batted first and started in steady fashion to reach 3/71 when James Dawson (21) was dismissed. At this stage the innings could’ve gone either way, but Ben Warren and Jagga Kotz turned the game in their sides favour with a 94-run stand for the fourth wicket. Kotz made 30 (65 balls), while Warren went soon after for a hard-hitting 75 from 68 balls (8 x 4’s). Brayden Frost finished the innings well for the Tigers with 34 (27 balls) as the ‘Creeks’ finished with 7/231 from their 45 overs. Brodie Clarke was the best of the Nairne bowlers with figures of 3/38 (9). The Razorbacks were never really in the hunt during the run chase with Shane Kenney (31), Clarke (28) and Mitch Hein (27) all getting starts, but no batsmen went on to the big score needed as they were bowled out for 139. Darcy Paech led the Langhorne Creek attack with 4/38 (8) and he received good support from Troy Blackwell (2/23). Bremer/Callington won their second game in a row after defeating Woodside by two wickets in a thriller at Woodside Oval yesterday. The Warriors batted first and posted a competitive score of 8/192. The innings was set up by a 99-run third wicket partnership between skipper Brad Collins and Noah Bell. Bell made 37 from 72 balls (2 x 4’s, 1 x 6), while Collins went on to top score with 72 from 107 balls (10 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Ryder Dolman (4/44), Jai McMurtrie (2/18) and Nathan Fitzgerald (2/36) were the multiple wicket takers for the Cobras. Bremer/Callington were in early trouble at 3/27 before Graydon Brand (25) and Alex Durbidge (29) ‘righted the ship’ with a 43-run fourth-wicket stand. However, once Brand and Durbidge were dismissed, the Cobras were on the back foot at 5/88. Enter Nathan Fitzgerald (18) who batted sensibly to add 57 runs with skipper Shannon Howie, who was hitting the ball well. However, three more quick wickets saw the Cobras eight-down with 23 runs still needed for victory. Howie stood up to get his side over the line with an excellent 86 not out from 68 balls. His innings included seven boundaries and five sixes. Chris Baschiera (3/42) and Nick Johns (2/32) were the best of the Warriors bowlers.Lobethal are up to second place on the AEHCA ladder after a high-scoring 10-run win at Strathalbyn yesterday. The Tigers batted first and got off to a fantastic start with a 156-run opening stand between skipper Mitch Weeks and Ben Matthews. Weeks top scored with 86 (108 balls), while Matthews finished with 57 (99 balls), as Lobethal posted 8/225 from their 40 overs. Brayden Gaiter and Matt Abbott each claimed three wickets for the Stallions. Strathalbyn started the run chase in good fashion as they reached the drinks break at 1/103 (23) with veterans Luke Cousins and Mark Abbott at the crease. With eight overs left, ‘Strath’ were still a big chance needing 53 runs with seven wickets in hand, but some late wickets saw Lobethal hold their nerve as the home side finished on 8/215. Cousins top scored with 76 and Mark Abbott made 58. Tanner King snared 4/36 (7) and Matt Martin took 3/34 (9) to lead the wicket takers for Lobethal.Ladder - after round 9Langhorne Creek 32, Lobethal 22, Strathalbyn 20, Nairne 20, Macclesfield 18, Bremer/Callington 18, Woodside 12, Hahndorf 2. Round 10 fixtures (17/12/22) - home team named firstBremer/Callington v Langhorne CreekLobethal v HahndorfMacclesfield v WoodsideNairne v Strathalbyn

Tough night on the diamond for Strathalbyn in their clash with the Magpies
Tough night on the diamond for Strathalbyn in their clash with the Magpies

Hills Softball Association ‘A’ Grade Women (Strathalbyn v Hahndorf)Finally getting a mild and dry game Hahndorf were up to bat first and had several safe hits and two basers to Georgia King, Megan Williams and Zoe Young which helped bring in seven runs with Strath’s third baser Rebekah Mayes fielding and throwing to Tessa Norris at first for the first out, a catch taken at left field by Rebecca Sims and a catch taken at centrefield by Emily Eglitis ending the innings. Strathalbyn came up to bat and even though they had hits to Norris, Taminka Wilks, Britt Jackson, Eglitis and Jordarna Wilks, they were unable to bring anyone home with Hahndorf’s left fielder Young taking a catch, third baser Mia Oats-Willis also taking a catch, and shortstop Peyton Daniels combining with Oats-Willis for the out at third to send Strath back to the dugout.Hahndorf’s second batting dig produced more safe hits and with great base running they brought in a further four runs while Strath’s Mayes took a catch, a K2 to the pitcher/catcher combo of the Wilks twins and another running catch taken by Sims sent them from the diamond. Strathalbyn knew they had to make good choices of which pitches to hit and they did with Mayes and Sims gaining walks and Mayes getting home but Hahndorf’s Williams was having a great game at second base, fielding and making a tag on the runner and then throwing to Nichola Zobel at first for the double play and then taking a catch to end the innings before Strath could get anyone else home.Strath changed their pitcher/catcher combo to Norris to Jackson for Hahndorf’s third batting dig and brought results only allowing one safe hit with Chloe Zakelj taking a catch at second, a K2 and another catch by Sims at left-field to hold them scoreless. The third dig for Strath produced one run to Jackson after some great base stealing, the only other batter to get on base was Mayes gaining a walk after some good pitch choices with Hahndorf making all three outs at first with the safe glove of Zobel. The fourth batting dig for Hahndorf saw them add four runs to the board before Strath’s Zakelj took a great catch having to run back and to the side, Eglitis took another catch at centrefield and Sims took a great running catch at left-field to end the innings. Strath came in to bat and needed to add runs to the tally but were unable to, with Hahndorf just too good in the field with a K2, a catch at right-field by Charlotte Fairley and the final out at first base. Final scores for the game were Hahndorf 15 defeating Strathalbyn 2.
