Goolwa wrap up the minor premiership in Great Southern Cricket

28 February 2023, 6:00 AM

Goolwa defeated Port Elliot by 28 runs on Saturday to claim the minor premiership at the conclusion of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) minor round. Goolwa made 149 on day one, and Port Elliot looked well placed at 2/66 with Tyson Somerfield top scoring with 61 (7 x 4’s). No other Port Elliot batsman stood up though as the Bloods were dismissed for 121 in the 48th over. The Magpies, without skipper Jayden Crees, turned to opening bowler Josh Jones, who snared 5/33 from a marathon 20 overs. Both sides will have week one of the finals series off before they play semi-finals on March 11/12.Willunga finished their season on a high with a four-wicket win against Noarlunga. The Demons had already taken first innings points on day one, and were hoping to push for an outright win on day two. Noarlunga resumed on 1/19 and batted until Tea, finishing on 2/63 before stumps were called early. Jason Scarff (27) and David Scarff (18 not out) were the leading run scorers for the Shoes. Sean McIvor (1/13) and Simon Roberts (1/24) were the wicket takers for Willunga. Noarlunga will take on Myponga/Sellicks in an elimination final this weekend, while for Willunga, who have won four of the last five premierships, it’s the end of their season. Myponga/Sellicks will enter the finals series full of confidence after defeating Yankalilla by 35 runs on Saturday. The Mudlarks posted a competitive 7/176 on day one and would have been confident of defending that total with their bowling attack. ‘Yank’ were in early trouble at 4/43 with the Mudlarks’ Euan Maclachlan (3/33) doing most of the damage. Lachlan Whittlesea (25) and Aaron Smith (53) then came together to add 73 runs for the fifth wicket to put their side right back in the contest. The dismissal of Smith brought about a collapse of 6/25 as Yankalilla were bowled out for 141. Mitchell Farquhar (4/17) was the leading wicket taker for Myponga/Sellicks and he was ably supported by Ben Hutchinson (3/20). Encounter Bay finished the minor round on a good note with a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over McLaren Districts at McLaren Flat. Ironically these two teams will face off this weekend in a cut-throat elimination final at Burgess Oval. Encounter Bay did a great job on day one to restrict the Crushers to just 105 and they had little trouble chasing down the target before Tea on day two. Jason Parry and Chris Butler added 39 runs for the first wicket before Butler went for 26 (46 balls). Parry was then joined by Sam Hoffmann and this pair saw their side to the total in the 34th over after putting on 68 for the second wicket. Hoffmann finished with 41 not out (45 balls), while Parry was unbeaten on 37 (111 balls). Keith Schofield (1/13) was the sole wicket taker for McLaren Districts.Mount Compass defeated Aldinga by eight wickets to claim outright points at Aldinga on Saturday. The Bulls declared on their overnight score of 4/107, an overall lead of two runs. In one of their best batting displays of the summer, Aldinga made 5/153 (42 overs) before declaring and setting Mount Compass a target of 152 from 28 overs. Paul Inglis top scored for the Sharks in their second dig with 65 not out and he received solid support from Wade Sutherland (31) and Ashley Pellatt (21). Aaron Dalitz (2/36) was the multiple wicket taker for ‘Compass’. James Colley (63), Paul Barrett (36 not out), Josh Murfitt (30) and Scott McAvaney (22 not out) led the Bulls to victory for the loss of just two wickets, both taken by Jonathan Piggins (2/45).Ladder - after round 12Goolwa 64, Port Elliot 58, McLaren Districts 49, Myponga-Sellicks 46, Noarlunga 43, Encounter Bay 43, Willunga 36, Yankalilla 27, Mount Compass 22, Aldinga 0.Elimination Finals (4/3/23 & 5/3/23)McLaren Districts v Encounter Bay (Burgess Oval)Myponga/Sellicks v Noarlunga (Encounter Bay)

Nairne kept their top-two hopes alive with a thrilling one-run win against Strathalbyn during round 17 action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) at Nairne on Saturday. Nairne batted first and were soon in trouble at 3/16, and this later became 6/49 as Jack May made his way to the crease. May played the most important knock of the innings with a top-scoring 39 (58 balls) as the Razorbacks completed their 45 overs on 9/131. Six Strathalbyn bowlers took wickets with Matt Abbott (3/22) and Brayden Gaiter (2/16) the best of them. Strathalbyn got themselves into a good position at 2/85 with Luke Cousins (37) and Matt Harris (21) putting on 64 runs for the third wicket. The loss of Harris brought about a collapse of 7/40 as ‘Strath’ stumbled to 9/125. The Stallions needed six runs to win off the final over, and got singles off the first four balls, before Lachlan Cutting was run out off the penultimate ball, as the home side were bowled out for 130. Brodie Clarke continued his excellent season with figures of 3/18 from nine overs. Clarke now has 29 wickets at an average of 13.14 for the season. He was well supported by Chad Harrop (2/22) and Nick Williams (2/31).    Langhorne Creek continued their unbeaten season with an 80-run win over Bremer/Callington in a match reduced to 40 overs after overnight rain. The Tigers batted first on their home deck and made 7/197 with Brodie O’Dea top scoring with 43 (47 balls). He was well supported by Ben Warren (40), Matt Tonkin (39) and Jaspa Tonkin (35 not out). Nathan Fitzgerald (3/16) was the pick of the Cobras’ bowlers. Barring a miracle in the final round, Fitzgerald, who currently has 37 wickets for the season, will win the AEHCA bowling trophy. The Cobras were in trouble an hour into their innings as they slipped to 4/43 with Daniel Kropp (2/22) and Jack Humphries (2/27) sharing the wickets for the 'Creeks'. Graydon Brand (41 not out) and Alex Durbidge (27 not out) batted out the rest of the overs as the Cobras finished on 4/117.Woodside won their third game in a row, and at the same time put a dent in Macclesfield’s finals hopes, after defeating the Redbacks by four wickets at Woodside on Saturday. Jeremy Druwitt (3/17) and Harrison Reid (3/37) were the best of the Warriors bowlers as they restricted ‘Maccy’ to 9/157 from their 45 overs. Tom Keough (37), Tom Filsell (35) and Joe Lions (25 not out) were the main run scorers for Macclesfield. Woodside chased the total down with more than 11 overs to spare through handy contributions from Brad Collins (39), Dave Wescombe (38 not out) and Matt Johnston (22). A whopping 38 extras also boosted the Warriors total. Lions (2/10) and Keough (2/34) were the multiple wicket takers for Macclesfield.Lobethal maintained second spot on the ladder with a high-scoring 37-run win against Hahndorf. ‘Lobey’ batted first with a 93-run partnership between Ben Matthews and Daniel Norsworthy (39) setting the base for Lobethal’s total of 6/235. Matthews finished with 100 not out (141 balls), with his innings containing six boundaries and four sixes. It was Matthews’ seventh ‘A’ grade century for Lobethal (including one T20 ‘ton’). Mitch Bannister took 2/37 for the Magpies. Daniel Jenner (75) and Lachlan Huxtable (55) gave Hahndorf a chance with an 82-run stand for the second wicket, but only one other batsman, Michael Shanahan (21), reached double figures as the Magpies were dismissed in the 42nd over for 198. Minor premier Mount Lofty defeated reigning premier Stirling by 21 runs in a low-scoring encounter at Stirling Oval during round 17 action in the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) yesterday. The Redcaps batted first with Adam Carthew (39), Jordan Neis-Beer (28) and Connor MIlde (24) the top scorers, as their side battled their way to a total of 146 before being bowled out in the 45th over. Ned Hopgood was the star with the ball for the Eagles with 5/23 from his eight-over spell. Stirling got themselves into a good position in the run chase at 1/69 with Daniel Gonzalez (36) and Jack Pick (21) adding 54 runs for the second wicket. The dismissal of Gonzalez precipitated a dramatic collapse of 8/20 with the Eagles slipping to 9/89. Josh Healey and Max Hawke were the unlikely destroyers for the Redcaps with figures of 4/12 and 4/18 respectively. Veterans Julian Zytnik (29) and Chris Shaw (5 not out) added some respectability to the scoreboard with a 36-run 10th wicket stand, but the hosts were eventually bowled out in the 39th over for 125. Mylor continued their late season good form with a third win on the trot as they defeated Bridgewater by five wickets with nine balls to spare in their match at Mylor Oval. The Raiders batted first and it was slow going as they posted 8/152 from their 45 overs. Luke Hoyle (38), Peter Atkins (32 not out) and Jackson Hooper (22) were the mainstays of Bridgewater’s innings. Ben James (2/14), Oliver Harms (2/26) and Thomas Jensen (2/27) were the multiple wicket takers for the Pipers. Mylor made a steady start with James and Nic Wilson (11) adding 51 runs for the first wicket before Wilson was dismissed in the 25th over. James continued on to top score with 64 from 114 balls (4 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) and Shane Maslin contributed a quickfire 34 (37 balls), as Mylor got over the line for the loss of five wickets. Atkins (2/30) was the only multiple wicket taker for Bridgewater.Aldgate moved up to third spot on the HCA ladder with a comfortable eight-wicket win against Uraidla. The home side won the toss and decided to bat first, but that was where the good news ended for the Demons as they were reduced to a perilous 6/15 in the 13th over. Pete Wilson was playing a lone hand as he and Jack Purdie (24) put on 48 for the seventh wicket. Daniel McDonough (16 not out) and Wilson then put on 45 runs for the eighth wicket as the Demons finished on 8/118. Wilson top scored with 61 from 109 balls (5 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). Matt Hansen was the destroyer for Aldgate with the excellent figures of 5/9 from nine overs. It was Hansen’s third five-wicket haul in ‘A’ grade ranks for the ‘Gaters’ and he now has 23 wickets for the season. Aldgate changed their batting order up, with Max Bilsborow (33 not out), Shaun Atkins (33), Will Quigley-Smith (20 not out) and Angas Wauchope (18) all getting amongst the runs. Mitch Makings took 2/19 for Uraidla.Kangarilla won their fifth game of the season after defeating Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) by 58 runs at Kangarilla yesterday. ‘Kangies’ batted first and posted a competitive total of 6/197 from their 45 overs. Carlos Venter (39), Lachlan Knight (38) and Che Martinsen (32) all made handy contributions, before Cole Davy gave the innings some impetus with a hard-hitting 51 from just 32 balls. Ben McGowan (2/47) was the multiple wicket taker for SCIB. Scott Creek Ironbank were never really in the hunt during the run chase as they were bowled out for 139 in the final over of their innings. Port Elliot has gone to the top of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) ladder following their 38-run win at Encounter Bay during round 11 action on Saturday. This pair added 42 runs for the fifth wicket before Goodieson was dismissed for 60 (126 balls). Natale then put on 27 runs for the sixth wicket with Mark Elphick (16), but when Elphick departed, McLaren Districts were in strife at 6/147, still 63 runs short of victory. Goolwa skipper Jayden Crees was the main wicket taker for his side with 4/84.Myponga-Sellicks booked their spot in the finals with a comprehensive innings and 25 run victory over bottom side Aldinga. Strathalbyn Softball (Under 14's) review
Strathalbyn Softball (Under 14's) review

Hills Softball Association - Strathalbyn v Redsox (Under 14's)Redsox’s Henry Sexton, as starting pitcher, rattled Strathalbyn’s batters with his pitching speed. Few batters were confident enough to have a swing, and while Henry warmed up, the first three batters managed to gain walks to load the bases before the next three batters were struck out. In defence, Charlie Askew pitched to Lindsay Butler and wasn’t far off the mark. Redsox’s batters made it around the diamond, despite Strath’s attempts to chase them. Askew and Butler achieved two strike-outs and a fantastic tag out at home plate after a wild pitch to end the dig with a score line of 5-0. At Strath’s second turn at bat, it looked as though it would be a case of three up three down, but after the second out, Archer Brown took a walk to first and set the tone for the next three batters. Butler held her nerve on a full count to take the fourth walk and score Brown. Strath changed up the field in defence with Tallera Spinks pitching to Bailey Bradshaw. Windy conditions proved a challenge but Spinks persevered to enable a couple of hits by Redsox that, despite good attempts, didn’t result in outs for Strath enabling seven more runs to be scored. Strath got one last shot at batting, with Meg Keenan stepping up and getting a lucky break with a dropped third strike seeing her just make it safe to first. Spinks got on base and showed her consistent diligence as a focussed base-runner. An attempted steal at home resulted in a trap play and Spinks as the first out of the inning. Zoe Williams, Jack Walters and Brown all got walks for Strath resulting in runs scored by Keenan, Williams and Walters for a final tally of 4four runs to the Panthers. This wasn’t enough to send Redsox back to bat as they’d already accrued a convincing eight-run lead. The final score was Hahndorf 12 defeated Strathalbyn 4.
