Suresh Sripada took the bowling honours with 3/26 from eight overs and he got great support from Beau Thomas (2/26) and veteran left-armer Andy Adams, who bowled a miserly spell of 2/5 from nine overs with six maidens.Mount Lofty remained undefeated and on top of the HCA ladder following their 40-run victory over Aldgate at Heathfield Oval. The Redcaps batted first with Josh Healey (41 from 49 balls) and Jordan Neis-Beer (49 from 93 balls) continuing their good early-season form. Adam Carthew made his fourth ‘A’ grade half century to top score with 56 from 63 balls as Mount Lofty posted a competitive 9/188 from their 45 overs. Young Aldgate seamer Charles Quigley-Smith took the bowling honours with 4/18 (8), while Matty Hansen took 4/43 (9). Aldgate started the run chase well with Josh Callaghan (19) and Shaun Atkins (44) opening up. Reigning premier Stirling get their Hills Cricket Association season underway with a win

24 October 2022, 6:00 AM

Hills Cricket Association (HCA) reigning premier Stirling finally got their 2022/23 premiership defence underway with a comfortable five-wicket victory at home against Uraidla during round three action. It’s been a frustrating start to the season for the Eagles with their first two games abandoned due to the inclement weather. Uraidla have started the season well with two victories and they batted first on Saturday, posting 8/166 from their 45 overs. The innings was anchored by opener Pete Wilson who made 82 not out from 132 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Vice-Captain Israel Symington gave the innings some much needed impetus with 44 from 57 balls (2 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Four Stirling bowlers took wickets with skipper Jack Pick the most economical with 1/21 (9). The Eagles lost a couple of early wickets but opener Jack Read, as he had done in the 2021/22 grand final win, took the attack to the opposition to smash 63 from just 47 balls (4 x 4’s, 4 x 6’s). He found a willing ally in Jacob Kemp who batted patiently for 47 not out from 116 balls, and along with Charlie Fryer (14 not out), got the home side over the line in the 39th over. Alex Heptinstall was a surprise packet with the ball for the Demons with 3/19 (9), while Simon Parker snared 2/29 (9). Kangarilla won their first game of the season after a tight 20-run win in a low-scoring contest against Mylor at Kangarilla Oval. ‘Kangies’ batted first with Lachlan Knight (43), Jono Makai (22) and Ryan Grimmond (22) the mainstays as the home side struggled their way to 9/123 from their allotted 45 overs. Six Mylor bowlers took wickets including skipper Michael Warburton (2/16), Matt Steadman (2/29) and Ben James (2/33). Mylor struggled in the run chase with James the only batsman to get going with 38 from 67 balls as the Pipers were bowled out for just 103 in the 43rd over. Troy Martinsen was the destroyer for ‘Kangies’ with 5/28 (9), his second five-wicket haul in ‘A’ grade ranks. He was supported behind the stumps by ‘keeper Carlos Venter who effected three stumpings. It was a ‘family affair’ for Kangarilla with skipper Che Martinsen bowling a miserly spell to claim 3/9 from nine overs.Like Stirling, Aldgate finally made it onto the ground as they headed to Meadows to take on the Bulldogs. Meadows batted first and got themselves into a good position with skipper Rohan Reid (52), Marko Kovac (40) and Oscar Tydeman (29) leading the way, but no other Bulldogs batsman could reach double figures as they were bowled out in the 45th over for 170. All six Aldgate bowlers took wickets with Matt Hansen (3/25), Jake Turnbull (2/21) and Matt Lennon (2/37) the multiple wicket takers. New recruit Shaun Atkins and vice-captain Josh Callaghan opened brilliantly for the ‘Gaters’ with Atkins smashing 75 from 67 balls (5 x 4’s, 6 x 6’s). He was well supported by Callaghan with 55 from 71 balls (8 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as the winning runs were brought up in the 27th over.Mount Lofty remained undefeated after three rounds following their 90-run win against Bridgewater. The Redcaps batted first with Josh Healey continuing his good start to the season with 69 from 61 balls (9 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). Healey was well supported by his skipper Jordan Neis-Beer who anchored the innings with 52 from 112 balls. Handy contributions from new recruit Connor Milde (23) and Adam Carthew (23) lifted Mount Lofty to 8/211 from their 45 overs. Liam Risson (2/22), Finn Sullivan-Llewellyn (2/23) and Anthony Jennings (2/67) were the chief wicket takers for the Raiders. Bridgewater were never in the run chase as they were bowled out for 129. Strathalbyn senior Softballers return to the diamond
Strathalbyn senior Softballers return to the diamond

23 October 2022, 10:00 PM

In their first game for this season, Strathalbyn’s ‘C’ grade side took on Echunga on a warm and muggy day. Strath were up to bat first and with walks and great base running brought home three runs before Echunga’s fielders took advantage of Strath’s runners lack of knowledge for the game when instead of holding on a fly ball they ran to the next base. Echunga’s shortstop Karen Boswell took the catch and quickly threw to Jasmine Hartmamm at second who in turn threw to Jodie Karayiannis at first for all three outs in a triple play. Echunga came in to bat and had safe hits to multiple players including two basers to Hayley Brown and Bree Elliott which helped bring in six runs. Strath’s pitcher Bec Sims did a great job in the conditions and first time catcher Heidi Samuel did well to support her. Strath worked hard in the field while playing one short with third baser Stacey Jamieson fielding cleanly and throwing to Jackie Marsh on first, a catch taken at centrefield by Jo Falkland and shortstop Jess Rumble fielding and throwing to Annabel McGregor for the out at second.Strath’s second turn at bat included some hits but they were unable to convert any runs with Echunga making two outs at first and Taylor Hogan taking a catch at centrefield. Echunga were also held scoreless in their second batting dig with Strath also making two outs at first and a catch taken by Rumble at shortstop.Strath really wanted to hit the ball in the third and had a couple of hits including one to Hannah Jones but had two K2’s and an out at first sending them from the diamond without adding to the score. Echunga added the full ten runs allowed with multiple safe hits and a two and three baser from Hogan helping get runners home. Sims did a great job in following through after a pitch taking two catches for the innings.Strath came in for their fourth turn at bat and had safe hits to Jamieson, Rumble, Falkland and Marsh and a two baser to McGregor which helped bring in three runs to add to the tally. Echunga was fielding well with an out at home, an out at first and a put out at second base to end the innings and the game. Echunga came out on top with 16 runs to Strathalbyn 6.

McLaren Districts on fire in Great Southern Cricket
McLaren Districts on fire in Great Southern Cricket

23 October 2022, 6:15 AM

McLaren Districts’ impressive start to the season continued yesterday as they claimed an outright win on day one against Aldinga during their round three clash in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). The Crushers are now a perfect three-from-three and sit on top of the ladder after earning themselves a day off next Saturday. Aldinga batted first and were bowled out for just 24 in the 20th over. Wade Sutherland (11 not out) was the top scorer for Aldinga. McLaren Districts only used two bowlers with Jim Ryan claiming 5/10 (10), while Jett Holberton snared 5/12 (9.1). The Crushers wasted no time passing the total before declaring at 1/144, with Lachlan Cooper top scoring with 75 not out (64 balls). Cooper was well supported by his opening partner Justin Twartz who made 63 from 55 balls. Aldinga fared a bit better in their second innings with Seamus O’Flaherty (26 not out) and Steve Flaherty (21) leading the way, but it was to no avail as they were bowled out for 81 to give McLaren Districts the win by an innings and 39 runs. Ryan completed an excellent day out with 4/9 (9), while Jacob Banks took 2/20.Encounter Bay are in a good position at stumps on day one of their clash with Willunga on the turf at Encounter Bay. Willunga batted first and struggled their way to a total of 81 before being bowled out in the 55th over. Charles Papworth, with 18 from 81 balls, was the top scorer for the Demons. Bays skipper Blake Bailey was the destroyer with the ball with the fine figures of 5/30 (18.5). It was Bailey’s second five-wicket haul in ‘A’ grade ranks. Zane Garrett chimed in with 2/6 (3). The Bays had 15 overs to face before stumps and finished on 1/20 with Simon Roberts (1/8) the wicket taker for Willunga. Bailey continued his good day and will resume next week on 14 not out. It was an interesting day at Goolwa as the home side took on Noarlunga. Goolwa won the toss and decided to bat first and after being in deep trouble at 7/38, recovered to post a total of 120 before being bowled out in the 68th over. Teenager Harry Jackson (3/17), Cam Bullard (3/19 off 27 overs), and Jamie Keers (3/31) were the chief wicket takers for the Shoes. Coming to the crease at 7/38, Goolwa skipper Jayden Crees played an excellent innings of 41, and he was well assisted by Tyron Rigney who made 20, to lift the Magpies to a total which looked unlikely earlier in the day.Port Elliot traveled to Yankalilla and posted a good total of 9/204 on day one of their round three clash. The innings was anchored by a patient knock of 74 (183 balls) from opening batsman Hayden Gordge. It was a career-best score for Gordge and set his side up for a good total. He was well supported by opening partner Liam Harris (26) and all-rounder Ben Griffiths (36). Yankalilla opening bowler Ryan Borlace took 3/33 (12), while off-spinner Aaron Smith snared 3/34 from a marathon 23 overs. It was an even first day at Myponga as Myponga-Sellicks posted a total of 209 against Mount Compass. The Mudlarks total was set up by an excellent partnership between Sean Haverty (58) and Liam Hutchinson (49), while Vinnie Nizzola (29) added important runs down the order before his side were bowled out in the 61st over. Mount Compass skipper Aaron Dalitz took 4/12, including a hat-trick (!), while Ethan Anderson snared 4/29 from an entertaining 4.1 over spell. Mount Compass had nine overs to bat before stumps which they safely negotiated to finish day one on 0/12.

Strathalbyn Panthers under 14's Softball review
Strathalbyn Panthers under 14's Softball review

23 October 2022, 4:30 AM

This week Strathalbyn faced a stronger and more experienced Redsox side in the under 14's competition. The speed of Redsox pitcher Sienna Golder presented a challenge for the younger 'Strath' batters. With a couple of strikeouts in the line-up, and a few walks, Poppy Groop scored the only run for Strathalbyn in the first dig. In the field for the Panthers, the damp morning conditions made ball control difficult, in fact it was difficult for both pitchers. In response, Redsox also got a few walks to first base, and brought in seven runs. In the second inning, Meg Keenan took the walk to first and stole around the bases. Redsox made some great defensive attempts to stop her, but a slight fumble of the throw to third allowed Meg to turn for home and safely cross the plate for the first run of the inning. She was soon followed by Jack Walters, who had Strath’s only safe hit to centrefield, and Zoe Williams who also did some good base-running. At bat, Redsox loaded up the bases and a home run hit by Henry Sexton brought them all home to add another seven runs to the total.Strathalbyn had one more chance to bat and persisted to score another three runs. Jack and Poppy both scored a second run each, and Eva Eglitis stole her way around the diamond after her walk to first base. Time and game was called without Redsox needing to bat again, with the final scoreline standing at Redsox 14 to Strathalbyn 7. It was exciting to see the young 'Strath' batters up there in the batting box, being aggressive and  having a good swing at pitches that are a lot faster than many of them had faced before.

23 October 2022, 12:55 AM

Macclesfield have moved into the top-four on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder after notching their second win in a row yesterday at Woodside. The home side batted first and never got any flow going in their innings with Noah Bell (21) the only Warriors batsman to pass 20. Fresh off a five-wicket haul last week, Lachlan Barrett was on fire yesterday with career-best figures of 6/11 from his nine-over spell. Barrett now has taken 11 wickets this season in just three games. He was well supported by Connor Moore with 3/28 (9), as Woodside were dismissed in the 32nd over for just 87. The Redbacks lost six wickets in the run chase before knocking off the target in the 32nd over. Barrett (20) and Kieran O’Connell (15) were the leading run scorers for ‘Maccy’.  Langhorne Creek made it three wins from as many games after a convincing 147-run victory at home against Bremer/Callington. Langhorne Creek batted first with Tigers’ skipper Brodie O’Dea and Daniel Kropp putting on 149 runs for the first wicket before Kropp went for 58 (82 balls). It was Kropp’s second half century in a row. O’Dea continued on to make a fine 145 from 119 balls. His innings featured 19 boundaries and a six, and was his third ‘ton’ for Langhorne Creek. His side posted an imposing total of 4/271 from their 45 overs. Graydon Brand (2/52) was the multiple wicket taker for the Cobras. It was tough going early on for the visitors as the returning Troy Blackwell claimed three early wickets on his way to figures of 3/10 (9). Brand (45 off 122 balls), Jamesson Kelly (21 not out) and skipper Shannon Howie (21) battled hard as the Cobras batted out their 45 overs, finishing on 6/124.
