In a high-scoring affair, Cove prevailed 14.11 (95) to 13.11 (89). Scott Grieve kicked four goals for the Cobras, while Ryan Need kicked three. Alistair Fleming and Jack Flett kicked four goals each for Happy Valley. James Farrugia, Grieve, Damian Roach, Aaron Wordsworth, and Need were named best for Cove. Best for the Vikings included Dwayne Ruddock, Matthew Lillis, Fleming, Joel Beeche, and Flett.Flagstaff Hill continued their unbeaten start to 2023 with a comfortable 65-point win at Aldinga. The Falcons led by 23 points at halftime, before kicking a further eight goals to two in the second half to win 14.12 (96) to 4.7 (31). In a low-scoring affair, Morphett Vale prevailed 5.10 (40) to 5.9 (39). Blake Carter kicked three goals for the Emus, while Harrison Butcher also kicked three goals for the Saints. Best players for Morphett Vale included Robert Schindler-Taylor, Connor Lock, Michael Smith, Liam Corrie, and Daniel Bode. Willunga started well to lead by 22 points at halftime. ‘Compass’ kicked three goals to two in the third term, but the margin was still a handy 19 points at the last change in favour of the Demons. With the home crowd behind them, the Bulldogs rattled home, kicking four goals to none, to prevail 11.10 (76) to 10.10 (70). Ziggy Vitkunas kicked three goals for Mount Compass, while Jed Redden and Ryan Sherry also kicked three goals for Willunga. Rosie Shaw kicked five goals in a best-on-ground performance for Goolwa/Port Elliot, while Indiana Quaremba kicked three majors. Joining Shaw in the best players for the Magpies were Amber McKinlay, Tamra Sanders, Bridget Lindsay, and Rachel Wood.McLaren Districts kept pace with the top-two with a 77-point win against Myponga-Sellicks at Strathalbyn on Friday night. Goolwa/Port Elliot started well to lead by two points at quarter time, before Willunga hit back to take a handy 14-point lead at the long break. The Magpies reduced the margin to seven points at the last change, before Willunga settled to win 7.1 (43) to 4.7 (31). Jessica Harris kicked three goals for Willunga, while Rosie Shaw snagged two majors for the Magpies. Best players for Willunga included Cleo Guilfoyle, Jodie Hunt, Katrice Turner, Abby Woodward, and Kiara Upitis. The Southern Football League (SFL) ‘A’ Grade Women’s competition got underway today with several big wins in round one. The closest match was between reigning premier Flagstaff Hill and Christies Beach, with ‘Christies’ winning by 23 points. The win was set up by an excellent first term where they kicked three goals to none. The rest of the game was tight with Christies Beach running out winners 4.5 (29) to 1.0 (6). Cadence Bryowsky kicked two goals for Christies Beach, while Emma Hoppo was the sole goalkicker for Flagstaff Hill. Port Noarlunga started their season with a bang, courtesy of a whopping 202-point victory against Hackham. The Cockle Divers led by 60 points at quarter time, 92 points at halftime, and 145 points at the last change, before winning 30.22 (202) to 0.0 (0). Port Noarlunga had 13 different goalkickers with Jolande Wilson (6), Jessika O’Hanlon (5), and Nikki Parker (5) leading the way. Cove Cobras defeated newcomers Noarlunga by 97 points to open their 2023 season at Old Noarlunga today. The win was set up by a six goal to zero first term which saw the Cobras lead by 40 points at the first change. A further eight goals in the last three quarters saw Cove win 14.13 (97) to 0.0 (0). Makayla Brown kicked four goals for the Cobras. It’s the second win in a row by more than 150 points for the Falcons. Flagstaff Hill led by 86 points at halftime, before kicking a further 16 goals in the second half to win 29.20 (194) to 2.5 (17). The game was close throughout with McLaren Districts holding a slender one-point lead at the final change. In a high-scoring last quarter, where 11 goals were kicked, the Eagles triumphed 14.14 (98) to 13.11 (89). McLaren Districts had 10 different goalkickers with Darcy Brown, Billy Chahla, Daniel Marr, and Codey Ellison all kicking two majors. Jarrod Kellock (4), Darcy Clifford (3), and Matt Tonkin (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Hawks. Daniel Lee, Danny Juckers, Lachlan Scott, Sam Tregenza, and Tom Messenger were named best players for the Demons, while Connor Hills, Mason Middleton, Cohen Pettitt, Jack Crispin, and Callum Tonkin were best for the Bays. Braden Altus, Sam Renney, Ryan Sherry, and Lee kicked two goals each for the Demons, while Crispin kicked two goals for Encounter Bay. Mount Compass also won their second game of the season with a 74-point victory at Yankalilla. The Bulldogs were irrepressible in the first three quarters as they led by 76 points at the final change. ‘Yank’ won the final quarter but ultimately Mount Compass claimed a 16.5 (101) to 3.9 (27) victory. Victor Harbor won their first game of the season with a 58-point win at Encounter Bay during round two action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. ‘Victor’ led at every change before winning 17.9 (111) to 8.5 (53). The ‘Roos had nine different goalkickers with Sam Basham and Michael Ross kicking three each. Kyron Pepper also kicked three goals for Encounter Bay. Best players for Victor Harbor were Michael Ross, Jackson Elmes, Ryan Fletcher, Rhys Mutch, and Sam Overall. The Bays were best served by Connor Hills, Callum Tonkin, Jack Crispin, Marcus Lippett, and Fraser Tonkin. Mount Compass also won their first game of 2023 following a 40-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot. The game was tight in the first half with ‘Compass’ leading by 14 points at halftime. The third term would prove decisive as the Bulldogs kicked six goals to two, before winning 16.8 (104) to 9.10 (64). McLaren Districts caused a major upset after defeating reigning premier Willunga by 11 points at McLaren Vale during round four action of the FPAG ‘A’ Grade Women’s competition in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. The Eagles got off to a fast start as they kicked the first three goals of the match to lead by 16 points at quarter time. Willunga hit back with two goals in the second quarter to cut the margin to just three points at halftime. Neither side kicked a goal in the third term as McLaren Districts turned for home with a slender two-point lead. The Eagles steadied, kicking two goals in the last quarter, as they won 5.1 (31) to 2.8 (20). Kiahni Russell kicked three goals for McLaren Districts, while Jessica Harris and Ada Anninos were the goalkickers for Willunga. Best players for the Eagles were Emma Gryczewski, Layla Rogers, Russell, Jessica Hutton, and Ally Bailey. Best for Willunga included Eden Coleman, Shannen Hiern, Harris, Emma Leask, and Cleo Guilfoyle.Goolwa/Port Elliot are now the only undefeated team in the competition following their 129-point win against Myponga-Sellicks at Myponga last Friday night.
