Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill have started their 2022 campaign in fine style with a huge 190-point win against Hackham during round one action in the Southern Football League Women’s (SFLW) ‘A’ grade competition. ‘Flaggies’ dominated from the outset with an amazing 17 goalkickers in a 28.22 (190) to 0.0 (0) victory. Bethany Bell kicked five goals to lead the way for the Falcons. Best players for Flagstaff Hill were Tamsyn Morriss, Jasmin Partridge, Bell, Chloe Meyers and Ebony Scanlan. Jessica Sherry, Maddison Hay and Rhylee McCall were among the best players for Hackham.Port Noarlunga started their season well with a tough seven-point win over Aldinga at Port Noarlunga. There were only four goals kicked for the day with ‘Porties’ winning 2.8 (20) to 2.1 (13). Bree Chapman, Philippa Worthley, Elisha Scriven, Sheridan Poland and Kirsty Watson were named best players for Port Noarlunga, while best players for the Sharks were Jemma Looyestyn, Ayla Regione, Charlotte Bayford and Amber O’Hanlon.2021 runner-up Reynella defeated Christies Beach by 42 points to start their 2022 season in style. Casie Coombe starred for Reynella with four goals in a best-on-ground performance. Savannah Rayner kicked the only goal for ‘Christies’. Other good players for the Wine Flies were Zannah Loxton, Grace Doran, Caitlin Walter, Anja Bancevic and Tyler Davies. Strathalbyn won their second game of the season after a comprehensive 93-point win against Victor Harbor during round four action of the FPAG ‘A’ Grade Women’s competition in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL). The Roosters led all night to win 15.9 (99) to 1.0 (6). Indi Miller kicked six goals in a best-on-ground performance for Strathalbyn and she was well supported by Megan Rich who kicked five majors. Joining Miller in the best players for ‘Strath’ were Emma Chapman, Morgan Tucker, Katie Ehlers, Rich and Rosie Shaw. Best for ‘Victor’ were Aloura Kirk, Tegan Yeomans, Jasmine Bailey, Liz Hayman and Ayzia Arnold.Willunga continued their undefeated start to the season with an 80-point victory against Mount Compass. The Demons led by 20 points at quarter time, 46 points at halftime and 66 points at the last change, before winning 11.14 (80) to 0.0 (0). Willunga had eight different goalkickers with Lauren Buchanan, Courtney Gum and Courtney Gutschmidt all kicking two. Willunga’s best players were Gutschmidt, Buchanan, Tamara Page, Jodie Hunt and Katrice Turner. ‘Compass’ were best served by Demi Sharp, Kiara Upitis, Georgina Thomas, Caroline Scott and Olivia Bendt.McLaren Eagles moved up to third spot on the ladder after defeating Yankalilla by 89 points at Mount Compass yesterday. Sophia Flanagan-Sjoberg had a ‘day out’ for the Eagles with six goals in a best-on-ground performance, while Jordan Bartolic and Lauren Reynolds chimed in with two goals each. The Southern Breakers U15 girls had a tough day on Sunday, losing 4-1 against Adelaide University. Several key absences and only one counted against the girls who until the weekend had not yet conceded a goal this season. The girls started strongly, showing some of the good passing they’ve been working on so far this season. The Breakers scored the first goal of the match with some great teamwork from Kayte O’Donnell and Abby Ellis who delivered the ball to Estelle Dybala for a perfectly timed shot. Sophia Moore and Hannah Rowlands combined well to stop the University forwards at the other end and the game continued fairly evenly. A drinks break was called during a run of corners for Uni. When the game resumed the Uni stepped up their pressure and quickly evened up the score. Shortly after they surged forward again, drawing goalie Lucy Boundey out of her goal. She raced back to try and beat the forward the ball. Some deft heel work from Uni kept the ball from going out, but Boundey pounced before she could get a shot away. After half-time the warm weather and lack of rest opportunities for the Breakers started to show. Lokke ‘The Blocker’ Rennerts stepped up in defence saving several goals with her desperate efforts, but the girls quickly found themselves 2-1 and then 3-1 down.  When Boundey was drawn out again during another one-on-one battle the score became 4-1. After Hannah Rowlands jarred her knee, Zara Boundey subbed back on, and coach O’Donnell was left without any opportunity to give the remaining players a break. At the other end of the pitch Alana Anderson and Sophie Andrews showed real tenacity and kept battling to try and create scoring chances. Zoe Warren kept trying hard all game in the midfield but in the end, it wasn’t the girls’ day.    Next week the girls are at home against Adelaide Cobras, a team they’ve never played before. Kick-off at 10.30am at Port Elliot’s Breaker Park.

Reynella continued their unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 80-point win against Christies Beach during round three action in the Southern Football League (SFL) yesterday. Reynella dominated the first half to take an unassailable 57-point lead at the long break. Christies Beach battled hard in the third term to outscore Reynella, but they still trailed by 54 points at the last change. A further five goals to none in the final quarter saw Reynella win 18.9 (117) to 5.7 (37). Brad Potter (5), Marc Borholm (4), Callan Semple (4) and Bailey Marshman (3) were the leading goalkickers for the Wine Flies, while Nathan Stock kicked two goals for the Saints. Sam Whitbread, Marshman, Potter, Robert Irra and Cameron McGree were best for Reynella while for ‘Christies’, Shaun King, Stock, Lee Hoey, Aidan Coakley and Joel Andruszkiewicz were their best players. Aldinga won their first game of the season with a hard-fought 12-point win at Port Noarlunga. ‘Porties’, chasing their first win of 2022, led by three points at the last change before Aldinga kicked an inaccurate 2.9 to 1.0 in the last quarter to win 6.16 (52) to 6.4 (40). Travis Stone kicked three goals for Aldinga, while Sam Roberts kicked two for Port Noarlunga. Tyler Flintham, Angus Stangewitz, James Bailey, Bailey Pilmore and Brady O’Hanlon were best for the Sharks. Alex McKay, Jordan Zeitz and Jesse-Jay Vaughan were among the best players for Port Noarlunga.Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill won their second game of the season with a 46-point win at Morphett Vale. After a tight opening quarter, ‘Flaggies’ kicked six goals to one in the second term to take a handy 35-point lead to halftime. The home side hit back in the third quarter to reduce the margin to 15 points at the last change. The Falcons steadied and eventually pulled away in the last quarter to win 16.13 (109) to 9.9 (63). Flagstaff Hill had nine different goal kickers with Daniel Butcher and Mitchell Johnson each slotting three majors. Dylan Williams also kicked three goals for the Emus. Best for the Falcons were Johnson, Michael Shearer, Kobe Cavouras, Declan Tomkins and Brad Kirk. Anthony Biemans, Liam Corrie and Williams were best for Morphett Vale.Happy Valley won their first game of the season with a convincing 55-point win against Noarlunga at Happy Valley. The Vikings dominated from the start as they took a 46-point lead to three quarter time, kicking an incredible 14 goals straight! A further three goals to one in the final term saw Happy Valley win 17.3 (105) to 6.14 (50). 2021 leading goalkicker Ben Geytenbeek kicked eight goals for the Vikings while Ben Ryan kicked three. The first half was tight with Western Districts leading by just six points at halftime. The Saints took over in the second half as they kicked nine goals to three to win 13.15 (93) to 7.5 (47). New recruit Peter Hoban was best on ground and he was well supported by Tim Larcombe, Brad Crabb, Dylan Lockett and Damon Weatherspoon. Callum Willson, Jack Gurney and Hugo Sharkey were among the best players for Dudley United. McLaren Eagles won their first game of 2022 following their 20-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot during round three action of the FPAG ‘A’ Grade Women’s competition in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL). The Eagles led by just six points at the last change before they kicked two goals to none in the last quarter to win 6.3 (39) to 3.1 (19). The Eagles’ Bianca Coom (2) was the only multiple goalkicker for either side. Best players for McLaren were Emily Rowe, Gwen Humphreys, Donna Boal, Katrina Munzberg and Katie Whish. For Goolwa/Port Elliot, Rachel Searle, Kaya Angus and Lucy Earl were among their best players.Reigning premier Willunga continued on their merry way in 2022 with a convincing 91-point win against Strathalbyn at Willunga on Saturday night. The Demons led by 24 points at quarter time, 56 points at halftime and 77 points at the last change before winning 16.8 (104) to 2.1 (13). Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill won their first game of the season with a hard-fought 14-point win at Christies Beach during round two action in the Southern Football League (SFL) on Saturday.  ‘Flaggies’ opened up a handy 30-point lead at halftime before Christies Beach came roaring back into the contest with five goals to one in the third term to trail by just four points at the last change. The Falcons steadied in the last quarter to eventually win 15.12 (102) to 13.10 (88). Daniel Butcher (6) and Nathan Beenham (4) combined to kick 10 goals for ‘Flaggies’, while Blake Carter kicked four goals for the Saints. Best players for Flagstaff Hill were Michael Shearer, Mitchell Johnson, Brayden Heyward-Ferors, Beenham and Nash Mitchell. Shaun King, Jonty Murphy, Lee Hoey, James Conlon and Korii Gebhardt were best for ‘Christies’. Reynella won their second game for the season with a come-from-behind 11-point win against Happy Valley at Reynella. The visitors started well to lead by 14 points at quarter time, and they extended their lead out to a handy 21 points by halftime. The Wine Flies turned the game around in the third term as they kicked six goals to two to take a slender four-point lead to the last change. A further four goals to three in the final term saw Reynella win 14.14 (98) to 13.9 (87). New recruit Marc Borholm was a star up forward for the home side with six goals in a best-on-ground performance. Myponga/Sellicks won their first game of the season with an upset 12-point win at Mount Compass during round two action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) yesterday. Mount Compass started well to lead by 16 points at halftime, but the game turned in the third term as the Mudlarks slammed on six goals to two to turn for home leading by 13 points. It was a high scoring final quarter, with both sides kicking five goals, before Myponga/Sellicks won 15.12 (102) to 14.6 (90). Hassan Ahmat-Watkins was a star up forward for the Mudlarks with six goals and he was well supported by Connor Sampson with three goals. Jordan Boots also kicked three goals for Mount Compass. Best players for the Mudlarks were Levi Proude, Ahmat-Watkins, Elliot Chalmers, Sampson and Scott Ogilvie. Sam Haniford, Tomas Vitkunas, Tom Pinyon, Corey Grove and Bailey Hann were the best players for the Bulldogs.McLaren Eagles remain undefeated after two rounds following their comprehensive 193-point win at Yankalilla yesterday. The Eagles kicked 10 goals in the first term and another 10 in the last quarter to win 31.15 (201) to 1.2 (8). McLaren had 13 different goalkickers with James Grimley (6), Matthew Merrett (5) and Jordan Mutton (5) leading the way. Sam Basham kicked five goals for ‘Victor’ and he was well supported by Kane Cooper (4) and Jackson Elmes (4). Leo Harrison (3) and Jaid Cooper (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Magpies. Best players for the undefeated Victor Harbor were Jesse McKinnon, Ben Yeomans, Zac Dowling, Elmes and Ryan Jeffries. Logan Payne, Cooper, Charlie Steele, Kaiden Wilton and Jordan Wilson-King were among the best players for Goolwa/Port Elliot. Encounter Bay made it two-from-two with a big 99-point win at home over perennial powerhouse Langhorne Creek. The game was reasonably tight early with the Bays taking a 20-point lead to halftime before they really put the foot down, to kick 13 goals to one in the second half and win 21.13 (139) to 6.4 (40). Jake Tarca (5), Tyson Neale (4) and Nick Marshall (3) were the leading goalkickers for the Bays. Marcus Lippett, Tarca, Neale, Cohen Pettitt and Hamish Tonkin were named best for Encounter Bay. Reigning premier Willunga have flexed their considerable muscle with a commanding 174-point win against Victor Harbor in round two action of the FPAG ‘A’ Grade Women’s competition in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL). The Demons led by 45 points at quarter time, 91 points at halftime and 139 points at the last change before winning 26.18 (174) to 0.0 (0). Willunga had 10 different goal kickers with Courtney Gum (7), Tamara Page (4), Courtney Gutschmidt (3) and Jodie Hunt (3) leading the way. Ella Quinn, Gutschmidt, Ella Radbone, Patty Parry and Gum were best for Willunga. ‘Victor’ was best served by Jasmine Bailey, Tegan Yeomans, Natasha Fairhurst, Stacie Findlow and Kirrily Jaeger.Strathalbyn got their season underway yesterday with a convincing 98-point win against Yankalilla. ‘Strath’ had the bye in round one but they showed no signs of rust as they dominated from the start of the game to win 14.15 (99) to 0.1 (1). Reynella got their season off to a perfect start with a 35-point win at home against reigning premier Flagstaff Hill during round one action in the Southern Football League (SFL) yesterday. It was a tight first half with just four goals kicked, with Reynella taking a 12-point lead to halftime. The third quarter would prove decisive as the Wine Flies kicked four goals to one to take an unassailable 30-point lead into the final term. A further six goals to five in the last quarter saw Reynella win 13.10 (88) to 7.11 (53). Marc Borholm and Callan Semple kicked four goals each for Reynella, while Bailey Marshman kicked three. Saleh Baltagie and Daniel Nash kicked two goals apiece for the Falcons. Victor Harbor got their season off to the perfect start with an upset 12-point win against Langhorne Creek at Victor Harbor during round one action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) yesterday. The win was set up by a rampaging first quarter from ‘Victor’, as they kicked seven goals to zero to lead by 43 points at the first change. Langhorne Creek outscored the home side in the last three quarters but the damage had been done as the ‘Roos won 12.8 (80) to 10.8 (68). Sam Basham and Jackson Elmes kicked four goals each for Victor Harbor, while Mitch Cleggett and Jake Dominish kicked three goals each for the Hawks. Jesse McKinnon, Elmes, Zac Dowling, Ben Yeomans and Heath Treloar were the best players for Victor Harbor, while best for the Hawks were Darcy Clifford, Matt Dominish and Curtis Perrey. Reigning premier Willunga got their premiership defence off to a good start with a tight 10-point win over Mount Compass. The Demons got off to a fast start to lead by 26 points at the first change and held the home side at bay to eventually win 14.13 (97) to 13.9 (87). James Lawton and Liam Nye each kicked three goals for the Demons. Jordan Boots (4), Ziggy Vitkunas (4) and Tom Pinyon (3) were the leading goal kickers for the Bulldogs. Best for Willunga were Cam Hutchens, Nye, Brett Miegel, Daniel Bass and Lawton. Joining Simounds in the best players for Strathalbyn were Riley Clamp, Adam Clark, Jacob Wright and Tom Redden. Jordan Wilson-King, Kosta Dekoning, Luke Wilson, Myles Krakouer and Logan Payne were best for the Magpies with Wilson kicking three goals. Encounter Bay started 2022 with a bang as they comfortably accounted for Yankalilla to the tune of 77 points at ‘Yank’ yesterday. The Bays led by 39 points at halftime and kicked a further 10 goals to four in the second half to win 19.19 (133) to 8.8 (56). Jake Tarca kicked eight goals for Encounter Bay in a best-on-ground performance and he was well supported by Cohen Pettitt, Ben Davis, James Brown and Nick Marshall. Best for the Tigers were Jack Fitzgerald, Angus Weir and Will Hogben. McLaren Eagles made the trip down to Myponga and came away with a comfortable 39-point win over the Mudlarks. The game was still in the balance at the last change as the Eagles led by 18 points, but four goals to one in the last quarter saw McLaren win 12.7 (79) to 6.4 (40). Jordan Mutton (3), Jackson Daniels (2) and James Grimley (2) were the multiple goal kickers for McLaren. Hassan Ahmat-Wilkins kicked two goals for Myponga/Sellicks. The FPAG ‘A’ Grade Women’s season in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) began on Saturday with Goolwa/Port Elliot Magpies taking on the Yankalilla Tigers at Penneshaw Oval on Kangaroo Island. It was an entertaining first quarter as Yankalilla kicked three goals to two to take a six-point lead to quarter time. The lead was cut to four points at halftime before the Magpies kicked three goals to one in the second half to win 6.5 (41) to 5.3 (33). Kaya Angus kicked two goals for Goolwa/Port Elliot while Erin Smith also kicked two majors for Yankalilla. Best players for the Magpies were Angus, Amber McKinlay, Megan Hoad, Lacey Cuthbert and Tayla Hoad. Teagan Stewart, Chloe Howlett and Kelesha Rewiti-Edwards were among the Tigers’ best.Reigning premier Willunga got their premiership defence off to a good start with a 28-point win against McLaren at Victor Harbor. After a tight first half saw Willunga lead by just five points at halftime, the Demons powered away in the second half with seven goals to four to win 12.8 (80) to 8.4 (52). Emily Steele (4), Stellar Remphrey-Pese (3) and Bella Rigby (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Demons, while Lauren Buchanan, Remphrey-Pese, Patty Barry, Courtney Gum and Ruby Thomas were their best players. Best for the Eagles were Ally Bailey, Ruby Flanagan-Sjoberg, Jessica Veasey, Sheena Peters and Meg Bentley. Peters (4) and Sally Fuller (2) were the leading goal kickers for McLaren.Mount Compass started their 2022 campaign with a comfortable 28-point win against Victor Harbor yesterday. The Bulldogs led all day before winning 6.10 (46) to 3.0 (18). Demi Sharp was a star with five goals in a best-on-ground performance for ‘Compass’ and she was well supported by Linda Shute, Kiara Upitis, Emma Zimmermann and Kelly Haverty. In the Preliminary Final, Strathalbyn batted first against Hahndorf and although hits to Sasha Penglase and Kathryn “Buttsy” Milne got them on base, they could not get home with Hahndorf’s pitcher/catcher combo of Peyton Daniels to Georgia King making two K2’s and an out at second ending the innings. Hahndorf had safe hits to Zoe Young, Tahlia Larosa and King, a two baser to Michelle Davis and a three baser to Daniels to bring in six runs.Strath’s second turn at bat had safe hits to Kim Cutting and Tessa Norris but again they could not bring runners home with Hahndorf making an out at first, a K2 and an out at second to send them from the diamond. Hahndorf had hits to Nicola Zobel, Larosa, King and Chloe Davis with a two baser to Daniels and a three baser to Amanda “Reggie” Fairley which brought in a further five runs before Strath made an out at home, pitcher Norris took a catch and Norris and Cutting combined for a K2 to end the innings.The third innings for Strathalbyn had a three base hit to Penglase who made it home from a hit to the outfield by Crystal Karayiannis while Hahndorf made two outs at home and a catch at centre field by Fairley to prevent any added runs. Even though Hahndorf had multiple safe hits Strath held them to three runs by Tiahna Mayes taking a catch at right field, Emily Eglitis taking a catch at centre field and another K2 to end the innings.Strathalbyn needed to gain some runs in the fourth innings and they produced one with safe hits to Mayes, Norris and Penglase with Hahndorf making a K2, an out at second and a reflex catch taken by first baser Zobel to end the innings and the game as Hahndorf were enough runs ahead for the game to be called. The final scores were Hahndorf 14 defeated Strathalbyn 2.
