Double delight for Stingrays Women

30 October 2019, 7:30 PM

It was another great day for the Southern Districts Women as the SACA Premier Cricket T20 competitions continued on Sunday. The first grade moved into second spot on the ladder with a 32-run victory over Northern Districts at Park 25. Batting first, the Stingrays posted a very competitive total of 5/130 from their 20 overs. Hannah Sampson was the star with an undefeated 49 from just 53 balls. Adelaide Strikers youngster Darcie Brown snared 3/27 from her four overs for the Jets. Northern Districts’ run chase began well with the score sitting at 1/59 at one stage before a batting collapse of 6/25 snuffed out any chance of victory. Mary Waldron was the mainstay of the innings with a fine 39 from 43 balls and she was ably supported by Neisha Iles with 18 not out. Kelly Armstrong continued her excellent season with the ball snaring 3/14 from four overs. Armstrong now has eight wickets from five games and is the leading wicket taker in the competition.Southern Districts second grade won their fourth consecutive game to sit top of the ladder after four rounds with a tight 13-run win over Northern Districts at The Paddocks. The Stingrays were sent into bat and struggled to 3/36 before an excellent 38-run fourth wicket stand between Febi Mansell (27 not out) and Kendall Howell (27) lifted the total to 6/97. The Jets run chase started well to reach 1/54 before the Stingrays turned the screws and restricted the score to 6/84 at the end of the 20 overs. Encounter Bay stay undefeated in the Great Southern Cricket Association

29 October 2019, 7:30 PM

Encounter Bay has remained undefeated and sits on top of the GSCA ‘A’ Grade ladder after grinding out a 32-run home win against Port Elliot on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and sent the home side in and the move paid immediate dividends with Encounter Bay finding itself under immense early pressure at 3/23. Sam Hoffmann was holding the innings together and he was joined by his skipper Cam Lintern as these two started to resurrect the innings. Hoffmann went on to make a fine 69, his second half century of the season, while Lintern finished on 28 as the pair put on a crucial 76-run stand for the fourth wicket. Late runs from Jonah Magor (22 not out) and Mitchell Reilly (15 not out) were crucial as Encounter Bay posted a competitive total of 6/160 from their 40 overs. Ben Martin bowled an excellent spell for the Bloods taking 2/11 from eight overs. Port Elliot got off to a good start with Colby Whitbourne (26) and Brayden Arbon (10) adding 36 for the first wicket. Three quick wickets however left the visitors in trouble at 3/50 before Joel Harris (26) and Hayden Gordge (22) gave the run chase some impetus with a 48-run stand for the fourth wicket. Once these two were dismissed the innings stalled as Port Elliot finished on 7/132. Dillon Burns (2/18) was the only multiple wicket taker for Encounter Bay while Magor was very economical with 1/17 from his eight over spell.Goolwa won their second game in a row and moved into third spot on the ladder with a professional six-wicket away victory against McLaren Districts. The Magpies won the toss and sent McLaren Districts into bat and it was a strange innings for McLaren as six batsmen got into double figures but only skipper Stephen Nairn (23) got past 20 as they posted 8/132. Andrew Evans (2/12) and Jake Ashton-Place (2/39) were the main wicket takers for Goolwa. Coming off a score of 66 last week, opening batsman Luke Giddings was the mainstay of the Magpies response as he expertly guided the run chase all the way to victory with an unbeaten 59. He was well supported by Evans (25) and Shaun Burger (22) as the runs were knocked off with four overs to spare. David Smith was the best of McLaren Districts’ bowlers taking 2/24 from eight overs.Simon Roberts has put on a bowling masterclass as he took the amazing figures of 7/8 (including a hat trick) from four overs to lead his Willunga side to a crushing 116-run win on the turf at Mount Compass. Roberts didn’t need the help of his team mates in the field as all seven victims were bowled or LBW! Earlier, Willunga batted first and posted a solid score of 7/166 with that man Roberts leading the way with a top-scoring 48 from just 40 balls (7 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). He was ably supported by Joel Docking with 44. Cameron Usher bowled an excellent spell for Compass claiming 2/13 from his eight overs while Bryce Garrard took 2/16 (4). In response only skipper Paul Barrett with 15 could make it to double figures as the Bulls were rolled for a paltry 50 off 25 overs.Noarlunga were awarded a win after Myponga unfortunately forfeited.Round 4 (2/11/19 & 9/11/19) fixtures (home team named first)…..Mount Compass v NoarlungaWillunga v GoolwaEncounter Bay v McLaren DistrictsPort Elliot v Myponga

Stallions bolt to third straight win in AEHCA 'A' Grade

28 October 2019, 7:30 PM

Strathalbyn has continued their perfect start to the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association season with a comprehensive home win over Mount Barker on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first and got off to a good start with Chris Pulford (40) and skipper Jackson Lane (24) adding 72 for the first wicket. Unfortunately for the Kookaburras, they lost three wickets with the score still on 72 before Wayne Buckland (31 from 37 balls) got them going again before another collapse ensued where Mount Barker lost six wickets for just seven runs to put the visitors under pressure before eventually finishing their 45 overs at 9/138. Stallions skipper Mark Abbott snared 3/24 and he was ably supported by Matt Abbott (2/19) and Danny Horan (2/23). Strathalbyn wasted no time in knocking off the required target, winning with 10 wickets in hand in the 20th over. Luke Cousins scorched an unbeaten 85 off just 59 balls with his opening partner, Nathan Pelle, scoring 43 not out as the Stallions maintained their top position on the ‘A’ Grade ladder.Hahndorf also kept their perfect record intact after defeating Woodside by eight wickets at Hahndorf Oval. Woodside won the toss and were in immediate trouble, crashing to 6/37 before eventually being bowled out for just 74 in the 37th over. Benny Montgomerie (3/9), Jarrad Tait (3/18) and Caleb Blesing (2/15) did the damage for the Magpies with the ball. Hahndorf were untroubled in reaching the victory target for the loss of just two wickets in the 16th over with Andrew Baker continuing his consistent start to the season top scoring with 41 (6 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Chris Baschiera claimed 2/21 for Woodside.Nairne claimed their first win of 2019/20 with a hard fought 43-run victory over Bremer-Callington at Nairne Oval. The home side won the toss and elected to bat and put up a strong total of 6/232 from their 45 overs. It was a very even performance from the Razorbacks batsmen with five players scoring 27 runs or more including Richard Boscence (51), Sam Rowe (45) and Robert Crook (35). Mitchell Crisp was the only multiple wicket taker for the Cobras with 2/51. Bremer-Callington started their run chase in solid fashion with Stewart Leigh (24) and Arsalan Eubaid putting on 42 for the first wicket. Captain Johnny Fitzgerald came in at the fall of the second wicket and played an excellent attacking innings as he smashed 74 from just 65 balls to get his side to 3/147. Once Fitzgerald was dismissed, the Cobras lost their last 7/47 to be knocked over for 189. Sam Rowe (3/19), Chad Harrop (3/46) and Duncan Rogers (2/18) were the main wicket takers for Nairne.Langhorne Creek hosted Wistow with the reigning premier looking for a second consecutive victory while Wistow were looking for their first win of the 2019/20 campaign. The home side won the toss and decided to bat and after losing Daniel Cleggett early to be 1/17, captain Matt Tonkin and opening batsman Nathan Wundersitz set about putting a sizeable target on the board as the pair put on 81 for the second wicket before Wundersitz was dismissed for 46. Tonkin was joined by Ben Warren (23) and they added 44 for the third wicket before Tonkin departed for 50 from 63 balls. A few quick wickets had the Echidnas back in the game before Brayden Frost made his first ‘A’ grade half century for the Tigers with a hard hitting 52 from just 43 balls (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6) before unfortunately being run out. Langhorne Creek eventually finished on 9/233 from their 45 overs. Teenager Finley Walsh was the standout for Wistow with the ball taking 3/30 (9). Wistow’s run chase never gathered any momentum as the young side battled against a tight Langhorne Creek bowling unit. Only skipper Daniel Jenner (53) and Daniel Hughes (21) showed any real resistance in the top order while Walsh smashed a quick fire 24 from just 12 balls to provide some entertainment towards the end of the innings. Matt Tonkin with 3/14 (7) was the leading wicket taker for the Tigers while Warren was very tight finishing with figures of 1/14 (9).Round 4 (2/11/19) fixtures (home sides named first)…..Hahndorf v WistowWoodside v Bremer-CallingtonStrathalbyn v LobethalLanghorne Creek v NairneMount Barker has the bye

Woodside, Strathalbyn & Hahndorf undefeated in AEHCA
Woodside, Strathalbyn & Hahndorf undefeated in AEHCA

23 October 2019, 7:30 PM

Woodside has started their season with consecutive wins after a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Wistow during round two action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). Wistow won the toss and elected to bat first on their home ground but they couldn’t have got a worse start as Liam Willis was knocked over first ball by Dale Robinson. Skipper Daniel Jenner (28) and Lachlan Elsworthy (40) steadied the innings for the home side before a collapse of 5/3 saw the Echidnas bowled out for 106 in the 38th over. Chris Baschiera claimed 6/23, his best figures since the 2013/14 season, and Robinson took 3/26 to continue his excellent start to the season. Wistow needed some early wickets to be any sort of chance and they started well to reduce the Warriors to 3/37 with the danger man, Dave Wescombe, removed without scoring. However new recruit Will Worthington (30 not out) and skipper Brad Collins (36 not out) came together to add 70 runs for the fourth wicket to see Woodside home after just 21 overs. Elsworthy continued his good day by taking 2/34 from his nine overs.Reigning premier Langhorne Creek has bounced back after a disastrous round one loss to win at Lobethal by seven wickets. The visitors welcomed back a number of premiership players including skipper Matt Tonkin and gun all-rounder Ben Warren. Lobethal won the toss and elected to bat first on a slow outfield and things started poorly for the home side as they slipped to 3/25 with Warren claiming the first two wickets to fall on his way to an impressive 3/18 (9). It was slow going as the northern Tigers tried to resurrect their innings through Mitch Weeks (13) and Daniel Norsworthy (35) who added 39 for the fourth wicket. This was followed by a 32-run union between Norsworthy and Matt Martin (9) but when Norsworthy was dismissed, things fell away quickly until Dave Huxter struck an enterprising 17 not out from as many balls to lift Lobethal to a competitive total of 9/137. Brad Clements (3/34) and Troy Blackwell (2/26) were the other multiple wicket takers for Langhorne Creek. The reigning premier were relatively untroubled in their run chase with opener Daniel Cleggett anchoring the innings with 41 not out and with Warren contributing a hard hitting 58 from 47 balls (6 x 4’s, 1 x 6), Langhorne Creek passed Lobethal’s total three wickets down in the 33rd over.Hahndorf has flexed their muscles with a commanding performance at Mount Barker. Both teams were coming off first round victories so confidence was high in both camps. The home side won the toss and elected to bat first but they were soon under pressure as they slipped to 3/35. Fresh off a half century on his Kookaburras debut, Riverland recruit Simon Turk made an excellent 67 (74 balls) to take the score past 100. A late collapse of 4/1 saw Mount Barker dismissed for 152 in the 42nd over. Hahndorf’s Caleb Blesing was the star with the ball with an excellent spell of 3/16 from 9 overs. He was ably supported by Kris Dawe (2/23), Graydon Brand (2/32) and Jarrad Tait (2/34). The Magpies wasted no time getting on with the run chase as veteran opening pair Greg Hassold and Andrew Baker put the Kookaburras bowlers to the sword adding 143 for the first wicket before Baker was dismissed for 48. Hassold continued on to a fine 90 not out (17 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as the visitors knocked off the runs in the 22nd over to notch their second consecutive victory to start the season.Led by another brilliant century from skipper Mark Abbott, Strathalbyn made it two wins from as many games with a comprehensive 121-run win at Bremer-Callington. After opening the season with a score of 117, Abbott crunched 118 from 127 balls. His innings included 11 boundaries and six sixes. Matt Abbott contributed a hard hitting 33 (27 balls) and Jacob Tonkin a patient 29 (68 balls) as the Stallions posted an imposing total of 5/232 from their 45 overs. Nathan Fitzgerald continued his excellent start to the season with figures of 3/18 from his nine overs. The Cobras were never in the hunt in the run chase with only Nathan Fitzgerald showing any real resistance making a hard fought 42 from 58 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as the home side were bowled out in the 39th over for 111. Matt Hein spun a web with 3/22 (9) and he was ably supported by Ben Cousins with 2/17 (9).Round 3 (26/10/19) fixtures…..Hahndorf v WoodsideStrathalbyn v Mount BarkerLanghorne Creek v WistowNairne v Bremer-CallingtonLobethal has the bye

ridgewater have won their first game of the season with a seven-wicket victory over Stirling in round two action of the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) at Stirling Oval. Stirling won the toss and decided to bat first and Ben Zampa continued his good early season form with 36 from 49 balls (3 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). He was ably supported by skipper Jack Pick (36) as this pair added 41 for the second wicket as the Eagles got themselves into a good position at 1/78. From there on however, Bridgewater turned the screws and restricted the home side to 8/134 from their 40 overs. Luke Hoyle (3/21), Justin Summerill (2/25) and Rhys Jordan (2/37) were the chief wicket takers for the Raiders. Stirling started well with young seamer Myles Collins (2/11 from 8) removing Charlie Birnie and Jackson Hooper cheaply before the experienced duo of Summerill and Hoyle came together to take Bridgewater in sight of victory. Hoyle made 38 (1 x 4’s , 3 x 6’s) while Summerill batted through the innings to finish on 63 not out (6 x 4’s) as the visitors knocked off the runs with four overs to spare.Kangarilla had a huge 142-run win over reigning premier Aldgate at Aldgate Oval, sending a warning to the competition that ‘Kangies’ will be a team to watch in 2019/20. The visitors won the toss and set about putting a large total on the board. New recruit Cole Davy (67), Steve Featherstone (64), Matthew Bertelsmeier (45) and skipper Che Martinsen (44) were all amongst the runs as Kangarilla posted an imposing total of 5/254. Aldgate skipper Jake Turnbull (2/38) and young off-spinner Henry Brasher (2/43) were the multiple wicket takers for Aldgate. The home sides run chase never got going with opener Josh Callaghan (21) the only batsman to pass 20 as the reigning premier was rolled for just 112 in the 37th over. Jack Evans (3/21), Troy Martinsen (2/17) and Che Martinsen (2/27) were the chief destroyers for a triumphant Kangarilla outfit.Flagstaff Hill hosted Mount Lofty in a match ultimately decided by the weather. Mount Lofty were making their first appearance for the season after a first round bye and after being sent in the Redcaps were in trouble at 3/47. Josh Healey made a swift 21 from 23 balls while James Kittel-Neill was the mainstay of the innings making a fine 44 (55 balls). There wasn’t much resistance after that with the last seven wickets falling for just 23 runs with Mount Lofty bowled out in the 35th over for just 114. Jacob Lemon bowled a fine eight-over spell snaring 4/21 and he was well supported by skipper Kyle Petty (2/10) and Sam Tonkin (2/20). Petty (41), Stephen Wheatland (34) and Matt Emes (21) pushed the Falcons into a winning position at 2/102 before three quick wickets reduced them to 5/106 but only needing nine runs for victory with seven overs remaining before the rain intervened and the match was abandoned with the teams sharing the points.Round 3 (26/10/19 & 2/11/19) fixtures are 70-overs per side two-dayers (home team named first)…..Meadows v BridgewaterFlagstaff Hill v AldgateStirling v Mount LoftyKangarilla has the bye

Strathalbyn crush reigning premier Langhorne Creek in season opener
Strathalbyn crush reigning premier Langhorne Creek in season opener

15 October 2019, 9:09 PM

Strathalbyn has started the season with a crushing 250-run victory over reigning premier Langhorne Creek at Strathalbyn Oval on Saturday in the opening round of the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). After winning the toss, Strathalbyn took first use of a lovely day one pitch with Luke Cousins (38) and Nathan Pelle (24) putting on 61 for the first wicket. Skipper Mark Abbott came to the crease and took to the Langhorne Creek bowlers to bring up his fifth ‘A’ grade century for the Stallions, eventually being dismissed for 117 from just 91 balls. Steve Schofield (30) and Matt Abbott (28) made handy contributions in the middle order to take the home side to a whopping 7/288 from their 45 overs. Cameron Cox (2/48), Daniel Kropp (2/61) and Darcy Paech (2/66) were the multiple wicket takers for Langhorne Creek. The reigning premiers run chase never got going as a steady stream of wickets saw them rolled for just 38 with only Extras (16) and Jacob Tonkin (10) reaching double figures. The Stallions only used two bowlers with Matt Abbott (5/9 off 7 overs) and Brayden Gaiter (5/22 off 6.4 overs) destroying the ‘Creeks batting lineup. Admittedly Langhorne Creek were missing some quality players such as Matt Tonkin and Ben Warren but Strathalbyn were clinical on their way to a sensational win.Mount Barker has started their season in style with a comprehensive 68-run home win over Bremer-Callington. The Kookaburras returned to ‘A’ grade ranks last season and managed just one win for the season so it was a great start for the young team. After winning the toss and batting, Mount Barker were in early trouble as they slipped to 2/7. Nathan Fitzgerald with both wickets on the way to figures of 2/23 from his eight overs. Former Renmark North player, Simon Turk, came in and played the key innings of the match, making 73 from just 78 balls. He was supported by skipper Rhys Patterson (16) and Alex Dunbar (18 not out) as the ‘Burras reached a competitive 8/156. Johnny Fitzgerald was the leading wicket taker for the Cobras with 3/23. Bremer-Callington were never in the run chase being bowled out in the 32nd over for just 88 with only three players making it to double figures including Alfie Wenk with 18. Turk continued his superb debut taking 3/9 from four overs.Last year’s runner-up Hahndorf hosted Lobethal under newly appointed skipper Kris Dawe with the visitors winning the toss and electing to bat first. The Tigers were buoyed by the inclusion of East Torrens’ ‘A’ grade batsman Ryan King, a former Lobethal junior who was available as his grade club had a bye. King wasted no time getting acquainted with the Hahndorf bowling smashing his way to 36 off just 14 balls as Lobethal made their way to 2/85 before losing their last 8/46 to be bundled out for just 131. Lachy Bates (23) and Mitchell Weeks (21) were the only other batsman to show much resistance. Dawe (3/24), Benny Montgomerie (2/17), Jarrad Tait (2/26) and Graydon Brand (2/40) were the leading wicket takers for the home side. Veterans Greg Hassold (21) and Andrew Baker (36) got the Magpies off to a great start with an opening partnership of 46 before Nick Mosey (52 not out) took control, hitting 10 boundaries and guiding his team home to a comfortable six-wicket victory with 16 overs remaining. Woodside made the short journey over to Nairne to take on the Razorbacks in a clash between two of the powerhouses of the competition for almost a decade. Nairne decided to bat first but could never get their innings going with only Richard Boscence (44) showing any resistance as the home side were routed for just 102 in the 37th over. Dale Robinson (4/32) and Steve Ball (3/12) were the pick of the bowlers for the Warriors. The returning Tommy Baldock (38 not out) and Keswick recruit, Will Worthington (25), added 57 for the first wicket before veteran Dave Wescombe (32 not out off 22 balls) wrapped up the game early with Woodside winning by nine wickets in just the 16th over. Ryan Williams (1/18) was the sole wicket taker for Nairne.Round 2 (19/10/19) fixtures…..Mount Barker v HahndorfWistow v WoodsideBremer-Callington v StrathalbynLobethal v Langhorne CreekNairne has the bye

Aldgate begin premiership defence with a win at Bridgewater
Aldgate begin premiership defence with a win at Bridgewater

14 October 2019, 8:59 PM

Reigning premier Aldgate got their premiership defence off to a winning start with a convincing eight-wicket victory over local rival Bridgewater as the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) season got underway on Saturday. Bridgewater batted first and it was tough going as the Raiders slumped to 5/48 with the only top order resistance coming from Justin Summerill who made 28. Rhys Jordan (36 not out) and Anthony Jennings (16 not out) dug in to take the Raiders to 6/130 at the end of their 40 overs. Matty Hansen (3/17) and Jake Turnbull (2/18) were the multiple wicket takers for Aldgate while Frank Clements (0/8 from 8 overs) bowled very economically. Aldgate’s run chase began in solid fashion with Josh Callaghan (16) and Mitch Thomas (39) adding 27 for the first wicket before Callaghan was dismissed. Turnbull (39 not out) joined Thomas in a 51-run stand before Thomas was removed. Both wickets were taken by Adam Eckermann (2/16) in his first game at Bridgewater since the 2011/12 Grand Final. Frank Clements (32 not out) and Turnbull then took the ‘Gaters’ to the winning total with 14 balls to spare.Meadows hosted Kangarilla in the ‘Southern Derby’ with the home side coming out on top by 37 runs. New Meadows captain Brad Dawe won the toss and decided to bat first but the Bulldogs got off to a shaky start with Luke Tonkin dismissed without scoring. Haydn Reid (72) was joined by skipper Dawe (44) and these two set about compiling a match winning partnership of 113 for the second wicket. Rohan Reid with 34 not out in the latter part of the innings set Meadows up to post 6/200 after their 40 overs. Steve Featherstone (2/22) and Southern Districts recruit Cole Davy (2/25) were the multiple wicket takers for Kangarilla. The visitors lost Davy early in the run chase but Jono Makai (25) and Matthew Bertelsmeier (54) added 32 for the second wicket before Makai then Carlos Venter (0) were dismissed with the score now 3/47. All three wickets were snared by Chad Dawe on his way to 3/13 from six overs. Bertelsmeier and Featherstone (25) came together and added 60 for the fourth wicket before Featherstone fell as Kangarilla lost their last seven wickets for just 56 runs. Brad Louch (6/28) was the destroyer taking the last six wickets including four clean bowled! It was Louch’s first five-wicket haul for Meadows.Stirling and Flagstaff Hill played out a tight low-scoring affair at Stirling Oval before the Eagles got the chocolates with a two-wicket victory. Flagstaff Hill won the toss and batted but lost Stephen Wheatland (4) early before skipper Kyle Petty (16) joined Will Goulding (41) and these two set about pushing the Falcons to a competitive score. They added 54 before Petty was run out and when Goulding was dismissed, the visitors were looking shaky. Angus Heaton (26) did a good job with the lower order to get Flaggies to 9/124 at the end of their 40 overs. Stirling shared the wickets around with Sturt recruit Kosta Sinodinos (3/23), Pete Fryer (2/13) and the returning Jacob Gonzalez (2/38) the major wicket takers. Stirling’s run chase began promisingly as they reached 2/56 before a middle order collapse saw them slip to 7/85 and the Eagles were in real danger of losing. Ben Zampa played a cracking innings of 58 from just 68 balls but he needed some help which came in the form of Sinodinos (13 not out) and Jacob Gonzalez who whacked 24 from just 13 balls (2 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) to bring Stirling home in the 35th over. Petty was the star with the ball for the Falcons taking 4/8 (8) and he was supported by Jack Walton with 3/35 (7).Round 2 (19/10/19) fixtures are 40-overs per side one-dayers (home team named first)…..Aldgate v KangarillaFlagstaff Hill v Mount LoftyStirling v BridgewaterMeadows has the bye

Noarlunga start GSCA premiership defence with victory over Goolwa
Noarlunga start GSCA premiership defence with victory over Goolwa

14 October 2019, 4:38 AM

Reigning premier Noarlunga got their premiership defence off to a winning start in a low scoring game against Goolwa as the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) season got underway on Saturday. After winning the toss and sending Goolwa in, Noarlunga were well on top as Goolwa slipped to a disastrous 7/29 before a fine rearguard partnership between Shaun Burger (41) and James Ward (29) lifted the Magpies to a total of 106 at the end of their 40 overs. Jason Scarff (3/8) and the returning Sam Trapolino (3/19) were the best of the bowlers for the Shoes. After removing Jason Scarff and Anthony Burgess and with the score at 3/35, the Magpies had a bit of a sniff but a steadying 38-run patrnership between Paul Hicks (40) and David Scarff (16) brought Noarlunga close to the finish line and despite a couple of tense moments, the reigning premier got home with two wickets and an over to spare. Josh Jones bowled an excellent spell for Goolwa snaring 4/14 off his eight overs.2018/19 runner-up Willunga headed to Encounter Bay and after winning the toss and bowling, looked like they would be chasing a sizeable total after the home team sat at 3/117 with Sam Hoffmann (63) and Cam Lintern (20) in control. A flurry of late wickets saw Encounter Bay finish on 9/140 from their 40 overs. Luke Goldner was excellent taking 3/23 and he was ably supported by Bradley Miller with 2/39. Simon Roberts was economical as always taking 1/15 from his eight overs. Willunga’s response was a disaster from the start as they slipped to 4/23 before eventually being bowled out for just 58 in the 25th over. Only Luke Harding (14) and Jake Austin (10) managed double figures for the visitors. Dillon Burns (4/5) and Chris Butler (3/8) were the chief destroyers on a very good day for the Encounter Bay attack.Myponga’s return to ‘A’ grade ranks unfortunately didn’t go to plan as they were completely outplayed by McLaren Districts at Myponga. After winning the toss and batting, Myponga were dismissed for just 53 with Trent Ormsby top scoring with 16. Bodie Wilson (5/15) did most of the damage for McLaren Districts with Ryan McCurrach the other multiple wicket taker with 2/13. James Patterson picked up three quick wickets for Myponga on his way to figures of 3/17 (5) but Antony Natale steadied the ship with 32 not out to see McLaren home with six wickets in hand.Port Elliot got their 2019/20 season off to a great start with a convincing 83-run victory at home against Mount Compass. Port Elliot won the toss and batted first but got off to a terrible start crashing to a perilous 4/19. Enter former Ashbourne player Ben Griffiths who made a fine 75 (9 x 4’s) and he had a willing ally in Joel Harris (32) as the pair got the home side back into the game with a 79-run fifth wicket partnership. Another handy partnership between Ben Martin (12 not out) and Griffiths of 37 runs for the seventh wicket lifted Port Elliot to a very competitive 8/156 off their 40 overs. For Mount Compass, Mark Nash collected the first four wickets to fall on his way to figures of 4/25 from his eight overs. Mount Compass’ run chase never got going after they slumped to 3/11 before finally being dismissed for just 73 with Nash top scoring with 15. Griffiths continued his fine day with figures of 4/16 to complement his 75 runs in a fantastic debut for the Bloods.Round 2 (19/10/19) fixtures are 40-overs per side one-dayers (home team named first)…..McLaren Districts v NoarlungaGoolwa v MypongaWillunga v Port ElliotMount Compass v Encounter Bay

Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association season preview
Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association season preview

11 October 2019, 3:41 AM

The Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) season gets underway tomorrow with nine teams competing in the ‘A’ grade competition. ‘A’ grade fixtures will be one-day games (45 overs).Langhorne Creek pulled off a miracle premiership win last season, defeating Hahndorf by two wickets off the last ball of the Grand Final. The Tigers had to win their last five matches just to make the finals and they went on to defeat Strathalbyn, Woodside and ultimately the Magpies in a pulsating Grand Final. Matt Tonkin will skipper the Tigers for a seventh season and the club will welcome back Brett Ellis, Ben McLeod and Jed Rothe. They have also recruited former SA Country representative, Brodie O’Dea, from mid-north club Pekina/Carrieton. Hahndorf were a revelation last season coming from bottom in 2017/18 to the minor premiership and a Grand Final appearance. Shaun Tait has departed the Magpies to take up the senior coaching role at Adelaide Cricket Club. Former Meadows premiership skipper, Kris Dawe, will take over as captain and the club has picked up leg-spinner Cameron Harris from country Victoria. The Magpies will look to further develop their young players over the course of the season including Henry Baker who is an elegant left hand bat, and Henry Hassold who is a gritty middle order batsman and promising leg-spinner.Perennial finalist Woodside finished second at the end of the minor round but sadly exited the premiership race in ‘straight sets’ after losses to Hahndorf and Langhorne Creek. The Warriors will look to bounce back strongly with Brad Collins to continue as ‘A’ grade skipper. As usual Woodside will have plenty of depth with four senior teams including the re-introduction of a ‘B’ grade side that will feature a number of father/son combinations. The club has recruited Will Worthington from Keswick Cricket Club while Brayden Coulthard, Tommy Baldock and club legend, Nick Johns return. Noah Bell returns from injury but opening bowler Shane Druwitt has moved to Lenswood to play with his brother. Strathalbyn would also have been disappointed by their end to the season after being knocked out of the finals race by arch rival Langhorne Creek. Gun all-rounder Mark Abbott continues as skipper while former players Ben Cousins and Brayden Gaiter return. The club has a number of exciting under 16 premiership players coming up to senior ranks which will hold the club in good stead going forward. The Stallions will be celebrating their 150th anniversary with a commemorative dinner in the new year where the club will name their ‘best ever XI’.After an amazing run of nine premierships in 10 seasons, Nairne missed the finals last season after losing in the final round to Hahndorf. It’s been a changing of the guard over the past couple of seasons with Shaun & Jarrad Tait leaving and now club legend Kym Heinrich hanging up the boots. The club will look towards developing its young players such as Lachlan May and James Graves as the Razorbacks look ahead to more glory days. Lobethal has reappointed Ben Matthews as skipper and Sam Graeber as vice-captain while Kym Graeber remains as senior coach. The Tigers have lost batsman Matt Hill back to St Peters Old Collegians. The ‘A’ grade squad is young and remains relatively unchanged from last season.Bremer-Callington had a very promising first year back in ‘A’ grade ranks in 2018/19 with seven victories, including a memorable win over powerhouse Woodside in round eight. Shaun & Gage Atkins have returned to Gumeracha but the club will welcome back Jai McMurtrie from Rose Park and David Westrych from Eastern Ranges. Wistow has steadily improved over the past two seasons, winning nine games after going winless in 2016/17. The club will have more than half their ‘A’ grade under the age of 20 at times this season so the focus will be to bring young players through and to keep improving. Bowlers Sam Smith and Finley Walsh will be back from injury but unfortunately promising young batsman, Matt Chapman sustained a knee injury during Football season. Gun all-rounder Daniel Jenner will take over the captaincy, fresh off a fantastic 2018/19 campaign which saw him amass 760 runs and claim 30 wickets. Mount Barker faced a tough return to ‘A’ grade ranks winning just one game last season however the Kookaburras will continue to promote youth to try and set the club up for a bright future. Promising all-rounder Ryhs Patterson will continue as skipper with Jackson Lee his deputy. This week’s ‘A’ grade fixtures (home team named first)…..Hahndorf v LobethalWoodside v NairneStrathalbyn v Langhorne CreekBremer-Callington v Mount BarkerWistow has the bye

Great Southern Cricket Association season preview

11 October 2019, 2:02 AM

The Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) season gets underway tomorrow with eight teams vying for ‘A’ grade premiership glory. There are also eight teams in ‘B’ and ‘C’ grade while nine teams are involved in the one-day competition which commences on October 19. Senior Colts and Junior Colts competitions will commence on 19 October while the Under 12’s and Under 10’s start on 25 October.Reigning premier Noarlunga will be one of the favourites for the flag again and has picked up 2016/17 premiership player Sam Trapolino who has returned from Yankalilla. Cameron Bullard has returned to SACA Premier Cricket and Sam Carlyle is having a break this season. The Shoes have good depth in bowling with skipper Jason Scarff, David Scarff and Matthew Ray combining for 102 wickets last season while Jason Scarff and Anthony Burgess made over 1,300 runs between them. Willunga won the premiership in 2017/18 and were runners-up last year and will be a big threat this season with all-rounder Simon Roberts a key to their success again. Since arriving at Willunga at the start of the 2017/18 season, Roberts has taken 84 wickets at the miserly average of just 8.56 to go with 740 runs at 46.25. He was ably supported by Luke Goldner last season who snared 26 wickets and Luke Harding who was ultra consistent in racking up 532 runs for the campaign.Goolwa finished clear in second spot at the end of the minor round last season but sadly went out of the finals race in ‘straight’ sets as they could only muster scores of 110 and 109 in their two finals. The Magpies will be super keen to put the end of last season behind them and get their campaign off to a winning start as they travel to Noarlunga in round one. Victor Robertson and Andrew Evans combined for over 900 runs last season and will again be the keys with the bat. Perennial grand finalist Encounter Bay were knocked out in the Semi-Final last year by Noarlunga, ending an amazing run of six consecutive appearances in the final game of the season. Cameron Lintern will be the key to their chances of returning to the Grand Final, coming off one of the best seasons of his distinguished career where he scored a whopping 678 runs to go with a handy 23 wickets.McLaren Districts has made steady improvement over the past two seasons winning seven games after just one victory in 2016/17. The Crushers will look to build on that improvement this season and hope for a return to ‘A’ grade finals for the first time since 2015/16. Port Elliot hasn’t played finals since 2014/15 but they’ve been around the mark recently with five wins in each of the past two seasons. Veteran seam bowler Simon Donaldson returns from Bridgewater and Jesse Consalvo will take over as ‘A’ grade captain.Mount Compass have had a busy off-season with a turf wicket being installed at Burgess Oval and they will be buoyed by the return of Michael Tucker from Yankalilla and Aaron Dalitz from Uraidla. Paul Barrett has been reappointed as ‘A’ grade skipper. Myponga return to ‘A’ grade competition for the first time since the 2014/15 season at the expense of Yankalilla who will play in the ‘B’ grade this season. Myponga finished minor premiers in ‘B’ grade last season before losing a nail-biter of a Grand Final by one wicket to McLaren Districts. This week’s ‘A’ grade fixtures are 40-overs per side one-dayers (home team named first)…..Noarlunga v GoolwaMyponga v McLaren DistrictsEncounter Bay v WillungaPort Elliot v Mount Compass
