Meyer Shield - Round 1 review

23 January 2021, 8:00 AM

Round one of the Meyer Shield was played today in hot conditions at Meadows, Kangarilla and Flagstaff Hill. The games were reduced to 40 overs per side with the earlier start time of 9.00am due to the heat.Reigning champion Hills Cricket Association (HCA) took on Murray Towns Cricket Association (MTCA) at Meadows with Murray Towns batting first and posting 8/132 from their allotted overs. MTCA skipper Aaron Zrim, after being dropped before he scored, top scored with 39 while John Zadow chipped in with 24 not out. Five Hills bowlers took wickets with Frank Clements (2/11), Renzo Gaetan (2/14) and Rohan Reid (2/33) the multiple wicket takers. Hills knocked off the runs in the 32nd over for the loss of just four wickets. Opening batsman Haydn Reid (60 not out) top scored for the HCA while Aaron Smith (23), skipper Jake Turnbull (17) and Rohan Reid (16) made handy contributions. Zrim (2/22) was the pick of the MTCA bowlers.Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) overcame a poor start to win comfortably by 70 runs against Torrens Valley Cricket Association (TVCA) at Flagstaff Hill. AEHCA batted first and were in trouble early as they slipped to 4/47 before two good partnerships helped them to a competitive 7/193 from their 40 overs. Skipper Shaun Tait (48 from 48 balls) joined Ben Matthews in a 61-run fifth wicket partnership before Luke Timmins (23 from 24 balls) put on 69 runs for the sixth wicket with Matthews. Matthews played an excellent innings of 74 from 111 balls to hold the AEHCA innings together. Shaun Atkins took 3/41 (8) for Torrens Valley while Cam Sumner was very economical with 1/14 (8). Torrens Valley were never really in the run chase as they were bowled out in the 39th over for 123. Cam Sumner was the mainstay of the TVCA innings as he made 46 from 89 balls before being run out. Unfortunately for Torrens Valley, no other batsmen could reach 20. AEHCA opening bowler Troy Blackwell continued his excellent season to snare 4/18 (7.3) while off-spinner Mitch Weeks took 3/33 (8).Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) defeated Kangaroo Island Cricket Association (KICA) by 38 runs at Kangarilla after Kangaroo Island fell short in pursuit of Great Southern’s total of 7/169. Great Southern were in a bit of trouble as they batted first and slipped to 5/72 in the 23rd over. Luke Goodieson (35) and Colby Whitbourne (25) added 40 for the second wicket before Luke Goldner and Joel Harris (9) came together for an important 41-run stand for the sixth wicket. Goldner went on to top score with 40 from 54 balls while Jesse Consalvo (33 not out) and Sean McIvor (11 not out) lifted the tempo at the end with a 28-run partnership from just 15 balls. Five Kangaroo Island bowlers took wickets with Blair Wickham (2/23) the pick of them. KI were in all sorts of trouble early as they slumped to 2/4 with McIvor taking both wickets on his way to excellent figures of 3/12 (8). Rhys Bullard (34) and Zac Trethewey then added 50 for the third wicket to steady the ship before Bill Willson (16) then put on 41 for the 4th wicket with Trethewey as Kangaroo Island reached 3/95 and they were right back in the game. GSCA struck back hard through excellent spells from Luke Goldner (2/23) and Blake Bailey (3/19) with Bailey claiming the big wicket of Trethewey who top scored with 45 from 64 balls. KI lost their last 7/36 to be bowled out for 131.Round two games are again 40 overs per side with the games to start at 9.00am. Southern District Cricket Club set to merge with Adelaide Cricket Club next season
Southern District Cricket Club set to merge with Adelaide Cricket Club next season

21 January 2021, 10:30 PM

Southern District Cricket Club and Adelaide Cricket Club are set to merge from next season it was announced yesterday (21/1/21). The South Australian Cricket Association made the announcement via a media release below...The announcement of a proposed merger to Life Members, playing, social members and supporters is the culmination of months of discussions between the Adelaide Cricket Club Board and Southern District Cricket Club. The Premier Cricket competition landscape is changing, and sporting clubs are facing challenges which affect the capacity of clubs to remain viable. This is influencing SDCC and ACC’s proactive and independent approach to a merger, as an option to ensure viability and financial sustainability. SDCC and ACC’s proactive approach is aligned to SACA’s desire to reduce the number of clubs in the Premier Cricket competition through voluntary club mergers, which is supported by recommendations included in the Hussey Report prepared for SACA in 2020. The merger provides an unprecedented opportunity for members to drive the destiny of a merged club, create financial sustainability and maximise financial support from SACA, as they become the first movers in Premier Cricket club mergers. A merger, which is being presented to its Members by the Adelaide Cricket Club Board and Southern District Cricket Club Management Committee, provides an unprecedented opportunity for members to drive the destiny of a merged club, create financial sustainability and maximise financial support from SACA, as they become the first movers in Premier Cricket club mergers. Both clubs see the merger as an opportunity to become the strongest Premier Cricket club in South Australia and a club of choice for male and female cricketers in southern Adelaide and the Fleurieu region. The merged club will be called the Adelaide Cricket Club with elements of SDCC incorporated in new branding. SACA will provide financial support in respect of administration, marketing, and cricket development costs over a three year period to assist with the merger of SDCC and ACC. This will include the appointment of a Club Manager and a Cricket Development Officer. A Cricket Academy will develop and grow cricket in the Fleurieu region, including establishing the first female cricket academy in the outer southern suburbs and Fleurieu region, to meet the increasing need to develop skills and enhance local community competitions. This will strengthen the capability of the club to win premierships and produce more first- class cricketers. There is a commitment by the merged club to provide every player with the opportunity to participate, support development of players and provide pathways to play Premier Cricket and at State and National levels. The merged club will field senior teams in the Premier Cricket competition and the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association to maximise senior player participation. A strong Junior Competition is a key factor for the club’s future success and under the proposed merger arrangements, there will be no change to the number of junior teams currently fielded by SDCC and ACC. A shared facilities model will be adopted, utilising Glandore Oval and Bice Oval in the first instance. Development of facilities will be prioritised by the merged club and SACA has committed to work with the merged club to secure funding to redevelop Bice Oval centre turf square and playing surface and develop a Strategic Plan which identifies potential sites for merged club facilities between Christies Beach and Glandore. The ACC Board and the SDCC Management Committee will present a voluntary merger proposal to club members at Special General Meetings to be held on 15 February 2021.

Aldgate win top-of-the-ladder clash with Kangarilla in Hills Cricket action
Aldgate win top-of-the-ladder clash with Kangarilla in Hills Cricket action

19 January 2021, 7:30 PM

Aldgate remains top of the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ladder after a thrilling five-wicket win over Kangarilla in a high scoring top-of-the-ladder clash at Aldgate oval during round 11 action. Kangarilla batted first and got off to a fast start through Cole Davy and Steve Featherstone to be 0/70 after 10 overs. The carnage continued up to the drinks break with ‘Kangies’ reaching 0/131 halfway through their innings. The Davy/Featherstone partnership continued on to 162 before ‘Feathers’ was dismissed for 54 (72 balls). Davy brought up his 100 from just 70 balls before eventually being dismissed for 114 from 75 balls. Davy’s innings included 13 boundaries and seven sixes as Kangarilla finished on 6/260 from their 40 overs. Frank Clements (2/46) and Jake Turnbull (2/53) were the multiple wicket takers for the home side. Turnbull changed his batting order around and opened up with Luke Smet and Jack Woollard in an attempt to get off to a quick start. It worked in spectacular fashion with the pair adding 103 in just 15 overs. Smet was first to go for 55 from 48 balls (5 x 4’s, 5 x 6’s) closely followed by Woollard (44 from 51 balls), as Aldgate reached drinks at 2/122 (20). Clements and Turnbull got together and pushed on with a 109-run third wicket stand in just 14 overs to push Aldgate within sight of victory. Clements made 71 from 49 balls (6 x 4’s, 5 x 6’s) while Turnbull brought it home for his side with 53 not out as the winning runs were knocked off in the 38th over. Meadows won their fourth game on the trot as they ominously moved into second spot on the HCA ladder following a six-wicket victory at home over Mount Lofty. The Redcaps batted first and got themselves into a reasonable position at 1/60 with Josh Healey and Jordan Neis-Beer adding 49 runs for the second wicket before Healey was dismissed for a top scoring 41 from 66 balls. Mount Lofty then collapsed to 6/91 before Adam Carthew (25) and Dave Bennett (12) put on 28 runs for the seventh wicket. The Redcaps struggled through their 40 overs to finish with 9/130. Meadows used seven bowlers with five of them taking wickets including veteran Chad Dawe (3/19), Kris Dawe (2/12) and skipper Rohan Reid (2/24). Mount Lofty came out fired up and had Meadows in early trouble as Luke Tonkin (4), Kris Dawe (8) and Oscar Tydeman (5) were all dismissed to see the reigning premier 3/19 in the eighth over. Max Buckley came in to join his captain as they set about getting the innings back on track with Meadows reaching 3/62 at drinks. The partnership continued on after the break to reach 111 runs before Reid was dismissed with the scores level for a patient and important 56 from 119 balls (4 x 4’s). Chad Dawe came in and hit the winning runs with 22 balls to spare as Buckley remained 51 not out from 73 balls (4 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s), his fifth ‘A’ grade half century. James Kittel-Neill (2/25), Carthew (1/15) and Bennett (1/18) were the successful bowlers for Mount Lofty. After falling out of the top four last week, Flagstaff Hill jumped back in with a convincing 84-run win against Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Cherry Gardens Oval. The Falcons batted first with all batsmen contributing to a very competitive score of 3/213 from 40 overs. The standout of the innings for the Falcons was teenager Oliver Styles who registered his first century for ‘Flaggies’ as he finished with 100 not out from 102 balls (8 x 4’s, 2 x6’s). Max Renfrey (37), Matt Emes (26) and Josh Dunlevey (21 not out) made solid contributions in partnership with Styles. It was tough going for the Scott Creek Ironbank bowlers with veteran Andy Adams the best of them with 1/27 (7). SCIB were never really in the run chase as Flagstaff Hill skipper Jacob Lemon bowled a tight spell to snare 3/22 from his eight over spell while five other players took a wicket each. Adams top scored for SCIB with 48 not out while teenager Zane Lewis (25) continues to show signs of a promising future. Scott Creek Ironbank finished their 40 overs on 8/129. Stirling won their third game of the season to keep their finals hopes alive with an eight wicket victory at Uraidla. Uraidla batted first and got off to a solid start but lost regular wickets until veteran Ryan Hunter came to the crease. Hunter top scored with 42 as the home side made their way to 5/114 with the hope of pushing their total past 140. It wasn’t to be as Stirling opening bowler Chris Shaw came back into the attack and dismissed Renzo Gaetan (9), Ben Ratcliffe (0) and Trent Richardson (0) in successive deliveries to take his first hat trick in his long and successful career. It was the ultimate hat trick for Shaw with all three batsmen out bowled! The Demons lost their last 5/11 to be bowled out for 125 in the 38th over. Shaw finished with 3/30 (8) and he was well supported by Myles Collins (3/23) and Jack Read (2/23). Despite losing a couple of early wickets in Collins (14) and Read (0), the Eagles knocked off the required runs in the 31st over thanks to an excellent partnership between skipper Jack Pick (55 not out) and Kosta Sinodinos (40 not out). It was Pick’s first half century of the season and sixth overall for the Eagles in ‘A’ grade competition. The competition takes a break next weekend for the annual Harry Meyer Shield which will be hosted by the Hills Cricket Association at Flagstaff Hill, Kangarilla and Meadows. Ladder (after round 11)Aldgate 39, Meadows 36, Flagstaff Hill 33, Kangarilla 33, Mount Lofty 30, Stirling 21, Uraidla 18, Scott Creek Ironbank 6.Round 12 fixtures (30/1/21) (home team named first)Meadows v KangarillaAldgate v StirlingScott Creek Ironbank v Mount LoftyFlagstaff Hill v Uraidla

18 January 2021, 10:00 PM

Lobethal moved up to second spot on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder with a convincing 159-run victory at Mount Barker on Saturday. The Tigers batted first and got solid contributions from their top order with Matt Martin (48), Ben Matthews (46), Mitch Weeks (45) and Daniel Norsworthy (41) setting Lobethal up for an intimidating total of 6/266 from their 45 overs. Four Kookaburras bowlers took wickets including Rhys Paterson (2/33) and Hayden Lane (2/50). Mount Barker’s run chase started well with Chris Paterson (34) and Jackson Lane (8) adding 47 for the first wicket. From then on it was all Lobethal as the home side lost their last 10/60 to be bowled out for 107 in the 34th over. Winen has taken an impressive 19 wickets at an average of 11.16 so far this season. Sam Graeber (2/7) was the other multiple wicket taker for Lobethal. It was an incredible day at Nairne on Saturday with 14 wickets falling for just 58 runs as the Razorbacks defeated Bremer/Callington by six wickets. The Cobras batted first and were rolled for just 28 (20.1 overs). Seven Bremer/Callington batsmen failed to trouble the scorers with skipper Jai McMurtrie (11) the only batsman to reach double figures. All four Nairne bowlers took wickets with Mitch Hein the standout with 4/8 from nine overs. Matt Hein (2/0), Chad Harrop (2/9) and Brodie Clarke (1/11) were the other wicket takers for Nairne. The Razorbacks lost four wickets on their way to knocking off the target in just 6.5 overs to give them their fifth win of the season. Amit Maina (3/23) and Nathan Fitzgerald (1/7) were the wicket takers for the Cobras. Langhorne Creek made the journey north to Woodside to take on the Warriors in the match of the round and came away with a good six-wicket victory. Woodside batted first and got off to a reasonable start through Dave Wescombe (31) and Jeremy Snoad (27) as they reached drinks at 4/79 (23). After the break the Warriors started to get on top as Brad Collins and Sam Pullen put together a 70-run partnership for the fifth wicket before Pullen was dismissed for a hard hitting 45 from 38 balls (2 x 4’s, 4 x 6’s). Brad Collins continued on to make 35 from 62 balls (3 x 4’s) as Woodside finished on 7/198 from their 45 overs. All five Langhorne Creek bowlers took wickets with Brodie O’Dea (2/48) the only multiple wicket taker. The Creeks got off to a good start in their run chase as David Mudge (35) and Daniel Kropp (22) added 49 for the first wicket from 10 overs. O’Dea went cheaply to bring Ben Warren to the crease at 2/53. Warren hit a quickfire 38 from just 33 balls (2 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) but when he was dismissed at 4/121, the game was still in the balance. Skipper Matt Tonkin joined Daniel Cleggett and this pair batted beautifully to put on an unbroken stand of 79 for the fifth wicket to see the ladder-leader home with 13 balls to spare. Cleggett finished with 51 not out from 61 balls while Tonkin made 39 not out from 54 balls. Nick Johns jnr. snared 2/38 (9) for Woodside. Strathalbyn moved back inside the top four with a comfortable 69-run win at Wistow. The Stallions were in early trouble as they slipped to 3/37 with Zach Reekie (6), Mark Abbott (0) and Steve Schofield (1) all back on the sidelines. Matthew Harris joined opening batsman Luke Cousins and this pair set about resurrecting the innings for the visitors. They put on 137 runs for the fourth wicket before Harris was dismissed for 59 (9 x 4’s). Harris has been in good recent form with 180 runs (average 90.00) from his last three innings. Cousins went on to notch his first century since the 2016/17 season as he finished on 104 (9 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Matthew Roberts added a hard hitting 66 (1 x 4, 4 x 6’s) to lift the Stallions to an imposing total of 7/290 from their 45 overs. Harrison Burgess (2/36) and Lachlan Elsworthy (2/51) were the chief wicket takers for Wistow. The Echidnas started the big run chase poorly with their top four batsmen all dismissed with just 41 runs on the board before Travis Lynn was joined by Sam Smith at the crease. This pair added 75 runs for the fifth wicket before Smith, in his first game for the season, was dismissed for a hard hitting 55 which included four boundaries and five sixes. McLaren Districts break 12-month drought in the Great Southern Cricket Association
McLaren Districts break 12-month drought in the Great Southern Cricket Association

17 January 2021, 10:00 PM

McLaren Districts are on the winners list for the first time in the 2020/21 season following their nine run victory over Goolwa during round seven action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at McLaren Vale on Saturday. The Crushers won the toss and decided to bat first on their home deck and Ben Wilcox (24) and Daniel Bruce (22) opened up well putting on 53 for the first wicket before they were both dismissed by Josh Peach. Peach bowled an excellent spell to finish with the figures of 2/14 (8). Luke Goodieson came in at number three for the Crushers and made a fine 60 from 60 balls (7 x 4’s) and added 99 runs for the third wicket with Lachlan Cooper who made 42 not out from 61 balls (4 x 4’s). McLaren Districts finished with a very competitive total of 3/167 from their 40 overs. Goolwa’s run chase was looking in good shape as they made their way to 2/103 with Fred Nissen (20) and Luke Giddings (57) putting on 64 runs for the third wicket. A collapse of 6/27 saw the home side back on top with the Magpies precariously placed at 8/130. The game took another turn with Andy Evans (21) and Kingsley Vincent (9) adding 26 runs for the ninth wicket before Evans was run out and then Vincent was dismissed with two balls left in the match as the Magpies were bowled out for 158. Bodie Wilson(4/24) and skipper Stephen Nairn (3/25) did the damage for the Crushers as they celebrated their first win since the 4th of January 2020. Encounter Bay consolidated second spot on the GSCA ladder with a 21-run victory at home over Noarlunga. The Bays batted first and were in early strife at 2/31 as Noarlunga opening bowler David Scarff continued his good recent form to snare 2/16 from his eight over spell. Blake Bailey (15 not out) joined veteran Sam Hoffmann to add 77 runs for the third wicket before Hoffmann was dismissed for 85, his second half century of the season. His dismissal brought Bays skipper Cam Lintern to the crease and he continued his fine season to finish with 47 not out with the home side posting 3/165 from their 40 overs. Lintern now has 275 runs at an average of 91.67 this season. The Shoes run chase started poorly as they slipped to 3/21 before skipper Jason Scarff (39) and Michael Smith (48) got their team back on course with a 46-run stand for the fourth wicket. Noarlunga couldn’t get another significant partnership going as they were bowled out for 144 in the 40th over. Left-arm spinner Dillon Burns took 3/28 (6) and he was well supported by Shane Hastings (2/14) and Simon Acheson (2/34). Willunga’s unbeaten season continued as they defeated Port Elliot by 78 runs at Willunga oval. The home side batted first with acting captain Scott Brown and Joel Docking putting on 61 runs for the first wicket before Brown was dismissed for 22. Docking continued on to make 57 from 102 balls, his second half century of the season. Luke Goldner added 41 from 58 balls as the Demons finished their 40 overs with 6/161. Port Elliot off-spinner Ben Griffiths bowled an excellent spell of 3/12 from eight overs. Riley Paull (2/35) was the other multiple wicket taker for the Bloods. Port Elliot were never in the run chase as they were dismissed for just 83 in the 32nd over with Joel Harris (26) and Colby Whitbourne (16) the only batsmen to reach double figures. Five Willunga bowlers took wickets with Matthew Bolton (2/1), Docking (2/11), Simon Roberts (2/12), Goldner (2/22) and Tye McIvor (2/25) all grabbing a couple of scalps each. The competition takes a break next week (23/1) for the annual Harry Meyer Shield which will be hosted by the Hills Cricket Association.Ladder (after round 7)Willunga 42, Encounter Bay 27, Noarlunga 18, Port Elliot 15, Goolwa 15, McLaren Districts 9.Round 8 fixtures (30/1/21 & 6/2/21) (two-day games/home team named first)Goolwa v WillungaPort Elliot v NoarlungaEncounter Bay v McLaren Districts

Fleurieu & Districts are the champions again!
Fleurieu & Districts are the champions again!

15 January 2021, 9:00 PM

The Fleurieu & Districts Junior Boys Cricket team won the under 16’s SACA Representative Carnival yesterday following a 27-run victory in the final against a gallant Barossa & Light combination. The win completes a perfect carnival for the Fleurieu boys with five wins from as many games. Fleurieu & Districts batted first at Duncan Fraser Reserve and were off to a shaky start as they slipped to 3/43 with Tanner King (9), Lochie Nash (8) and Felix Gadomski-Mott (1) all back in the sheds. This brought Thursday’s semi-final heroes Charlie Morbey and Rilee Endersby together and once again their partnership would prove crucial. The pair put on 49 runs for the fourth wicket before Morbey was dismissed for 30 (82 balls). Jack Roberts (8) joined Endersby in adding a further 43 runs as Fleurieu & Districts finished on 6/160 from their 40 overs. Endersby went on to make a fine 54 not out (96 balls) and the total was boosted by a whopping 41 extras. Tom Giles took 2/40 (8) for Barossa & Light.Barossa & Light got off to a good start with the dangerous Ryan Dimasi (13) and the solid Harry Maher (19) putting on 25 for the first wicket before Dimasi was dismissed after a sharp catch by Morbey at square leg from the bowling of Endersby (1/23). King (1/9) came on and claimed the wicket of Maher in his first over and the game was evenly poised at 3/69. Barossa & Light skipper Will O’Brien, who had already made over 200 runs for the week, loomed as the big wicket as he moved to 39 from 40 balls before off-spinner Lochie Nash (2/17) dismissed him via another excellent catch by Morbey, this time from a full blooded pull shot at mid wicket. The Fleurieu boys were up and about as Barossa & Light slipped to 4/97, still 64 runs from victory. Leg-spinner Finn Sullivan-Llewellyn (3/11) came into the attack and along with ‘spin-twin’ Nash, the two of them spun a web the Barossa & Light players couldn’t escape. The last seven wickets fell for just 36 runs as they were bowled out for 133 in the 39th over. Fleurieu used nine bowlers with seven of them taking wickets including Roberts (1/13) who finished off the match by dismissing the final Barossa & Light batsman. Tanner King was the leading run scorer for Fleurieu & Districts with 267 runs at an average of 66.75 while Rilee Endersby led the bowlers with nine wickets at an average of 11.22. It was another great result for Fleurieu & Districts who also won the title last season. Much credit needs to go to coach Kent Llewellyn, team manager Linda Long and all of the parents and volunteers.

Willunga roll on in the Great Southern Cricket Association
Willunga roll on in the Great Southern Cricket Association

13 January 2021, 7:30 PM

Willunga staged a stunning comeback on Saturday to defeat Noarlunga at Myponga Oval and remain undefeated after round six in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). The Demons were in all sorts of trouble as Noarlunga made their way to 0/63 at drinks before a dramatic collapse saw the Shoes lose 10/40 to be bowled out in the 38th over for 103, 24 runs short of Willunga’s total of 7/127 (40 overs). Anthony Burgess (51) and Jason Scarff (31) were the only Noarlunga batsmen to reach double figures. Simon Roberts (3/23), Joel Docking (2/10) and Luke Goldner (2/17) were the chief destroyers for the reigning premiers. Earlier Willunga batted first and struggled to 3/32 at drinks on a very slow outfield. David Scarff bowled a fantastic spell for the Shoes to claim a miserly 2/5 from his eight overs with Peter Lamz (3/41) the other multiple wicket taker. The Demons key partnership came from Roberts (49 from 57 balls) and Docking (30 from 93 balls) who added 59 runs for the fourth wicket which gave the Demons’ innings some impetus to reach what turned out to be a winning score. Willunga skipper Luke Harding was ecstatic with the victory. “Noarlunga started the match really strongly thanks largely to David Scarff who bowled an impressive opening spell, used the conditions well, and gave us nothing to hit,” said Harding. “At drinks we weren’t where we wanted to be but the next 20 overs set up the match for us thanks to the batting of Docking, Roberts and Sean McIvor. We knew 127 was going to be hard to chase on such a slow outfield. ‘Junior’ (Jason Scarff) & AJ (Anthony Burgess) started well in reply but we always knew that one wicket would change the game and it did. Goldner was great for us to get the initial breakthrough and then he finished the job well with Roberts. With Noarlunga well on top at 0/63, and then for us to bowl them out for 103, gives us a lot of confidence that no matter what the situation of the game is, we will back ourselves.”Encounter Bay jumped up to second spot on the GSCA ladder following a crucial 26-run victory over Goolwa at Goolwa Oval. Batting first, the visitors posted what appeared a moderate total of 5/108 from their 40 overs. Skipper Cam Lintern (38 not out) and Blake Bailey (35) were the mainstays of the innings for the Bays. Josh Jones snared 2/21 (8) for the Magpies while Andy Evans was very economical returning figures of 1/7 (8). Goolwa made a poor start to their run chase as they slipped to 2/5 before Fred Nissen (23) joined Luke Giddings (14) in a 34-run third wicket stand. It was all Encounter Bay from then on as they captured the last eight Goolwa wickets for just 43 runs as the Magpies were bowled out in the 36th over for 82. Riley Puckridge (3/10) and Simon Acheson (3/11) were the chief destroyers for the Bays as they secured their third victory of the season. Port Elliot won their second game in a row and moved inside the top four for the first time in 2020/21 after defeating McLaren Districts by 56 runs at Port Elliot. The Bloods batted first and through handy contributions from Ethan Spriggs (24), Brodie Whitbourne (16) and Joel Harris (16), reached 4/79 at drinks. Ben Griffiths joined Hayden Gordge in what would become a crucial partnership for Port Elliot as the pair added 86 runs for the fifth wicket before Griffiths was dismissed for 66 from 55 balls (7 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Gordge was dismissed shortly after for 28 as the home side racked up 8/187 from their 40 overs. Stephen Nairn (3/41) and Josh van den Broeke (2/41) were the multiple wicket takers for the Crushers while leg-spinner David Smith bowled a very economical eight-over spell to finish with figures of 1/13. Ben Wilcox (20) and Luke Goodieson (16) made solid contributions at the top of the order for McLaren Districts but when Goodieson was dismissed the visitors fell to 4/61. Nairn (39) joined Dylan Howie to add 54 runs for the fifth wicket before Howie was dismissed for 40 (4 x 4’s). The end came quickly as the Crushers were dismissed for 131 in the 38th over. Veteran Simon Donaldson (3/31), Josh Andrewartha (2/27) and Ben Martin (2/11) were the best of the bowlers for Port Elliot. Ladder (after round 6)Willunga 36, Encounter Bay 21, Noarlunga 18, Port Elliot 15, Goolwa 15, McLaren Districts 3.Round 7 fixtures (16/1/21) (one-day games/home teams named first)Willunga v Port ElliotMcLaren Districts v GoolwaEncounter Bay v Noarlunga

Strathalbyn handed Langhorne Creek their first defeat of the 2020/21 Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) season on Saturday with a 46-run victory at Strathalbyn Oval. The Stallions batted first with Luke Cousins (24) and Zach Reekie (23) opening up with a 45-run partnership.Skipper Mark Abbott and Ashbourne recruit Matthew Harris then set up the home side's big total with a punishing fourth wicket stand worth 142 runs. Abbott finished with 76 not out from 77 balls (9 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) while Harris made his highest score for Strathalbyn with a hard hitting 77 from just 55 balls which included 12 boundaries and a ‘maximum’ as the Stallions posted 5/230 from their 45 overs. Brodie O’Dea (2/45) and Troy Blackwell (2/46) were the multiple wicket takers for the Tigers. Langhorne Creek started well in their run chase with Daniel Kropp (34) and Chris Russo (32) putting on 63 runs for the first wicket. Once Russo was dismissed, the visitors lost 7/37 to be 7/100 and basically out of the game. Danny Horan (4/23) took his best figures of the season and he was ably supported by Reekie who claimed 3/30 from his nine overs. James Shea (31), Blackwell (28 not out) and David Mudge (25) put up late resistance for the Tigers but eventually they were bowled out for 184 in the 43rd over.Woodside defeated Wistow by 116 runs and in the process won their second game on the trot to move into third spot on the AEHCA ladder. Woodside were happy to bat first on their home deck as Tommy Baldock and Dave Wescombe continued their good form as opening partners to add 52 runs before Wescombe was dismissed for 29 from 35 balls. It was the sixth time the pair had put on 50 or more runs for an opening stand this season. Baldock went on to make 44 from 68 balls to give him 330 runs so far in 2020/21. Sam Luck chipped in with a run-a-ball 32 but the real star of the innings for the Warriors was their skipper, Brad Collins, who smashed 65 from just 53 balls. Collins’ innings contained six boundaries and three sixes as his side finished on 9/230 from their 45 overs. Harry Burgess (3/55) and Matt Chapman (2/40) were the multiple wicket takers for Wistow. The Echidnas were never really in the run chase with only Lachlan Elsworthy (32), Chapman (30) and Travis Lynn (26) reaching double figures as Wistow were bowled out for 114. Six Woodside bowlers claimed wickets with Shane Collins (3/8) and Luck (2/11) the chief destroyers.Reigning premiers Hahndorf stayed in second spot on the ladder with a convincing 95-run victory at Mount Barker. After losing three early wickets, the Magpies consolidated through good contributions from the middle and lower order. Michael Shanahan (42) made his highest ‘A’ grade score and with help from Nick Mosey (33), skipper Ryan Trafford-Walker and Shaun Tait (20), helped get his side to 9/203 from their allotted 45 overs. The Kookaburras bowled well and shared the wickets around with Rhys Paterson (2/30), Deklan Porter (2/32), Simon Turk (2/34) and Hayden Lane (2/53) among the wicket takers. Chris Paterson got the Kookaburras off to a flying start with 30 from just 24 balls before his side lost 3/0 to slip to 3/37. Porter added 25 but the home side never recovered as they were bowled out in the 35th over for just 108. Trafford-Walker (3/7) and Shanahan (3/30) continued their excellent day while teenager Bradey Judd snared 2/6 to give the Magpies their fifth victory of the season. Lobethal won their second game in a row as they defeated Bremer/Callington by four wickets at Lobethal oval. The visitors battled hard to bat out their 45 overs and score 8/156 with skipper Jai McMurtrie (54 not out) and Chris Schilling (27) leading the way. Lobethal’s strong bowling lineup shared the wickets around with Mitch Weeks snaring 3/19 from nine economical overs while Cam Winen (2/20) and Matt Martin (2/34) gave good support to Weeks. Ben Matthews got Lobethal off to a flyer in the run chase with 72 from 74 balls (8 x 4’s). Matthews is having an excellent season with 320 runs at an average of 64.00 so far. He was well supported by Sam Graeber (30) and Lachlan Bates (21) as the winning runs were knocked off in the 31st over. Sandeep Huda (2/29) was the pick of the Cobras bowlers. Nairne had the bye. Ladder (after round 11)Langhorne Creek 34, Hahndorf 26, Woodside 24, Lobethal 24, Strathalbyn 24, Nairne 20, Bremer/Callington 8, Mount Barker 8, Wistow 8.Round 12 fixtures (16/1/21) (home team named first)Wistow v StrathalbynWoodside v Langhorne CreekNairne v Bremer/CallingtonMount Barker v LobethalHahndorf has the bye

Kangarilla hop into second spot in the Hills Cricket Association
Kangarilla hop into second spot in the Hills Cricket Association

11 January 2021, 7:00 AM

The Hills Cricket Association (HCA) season resumed on Saturday and the competition has really evened up after some pivotal games during round 10 action. Kangarilla have moved up to second place on the HCA ladder following a nail-biting one wicket victory over Stirling at Kangarilla Oval. In a game dominated by the bowlers, Kangarilla got home with three balls to spare with number 11 batsman Jack Evans hitting the winning runs. Earlier Stirling batted first and posted 138 before they were bowled out in the 40th over. The Eagles were in all sorts of strife as they slumped to 4/11 with Ryan Grimmond (4/17) and Ben Evans (3/22) doing the early damage before Myles Collins (24) and Peter Fryer (30) added an invaluable 49 runs for the fifth wicket. Coming in at number eight, Jacob Gonzalez gave the innings some much needed impetus with a hard hitting 43 from just 27 balls (4 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Stirling started well with the ball to reduce the home side to 5/68 at the drinks break with Fryer (3/14) and Chris Shaw (2/34) sharing the wickets. Brodie May (18) joined 17 year-old Lachlan Knight to add 31 runs for the sixth wicket as the game tightened up. Grimmond came in and made a handy 19 from 15 balls before being dismissed in the 39th over. Three runs were needed off the final over and scores were level when Knight was run out for an important 35 from 79 balls. This left the equation of one run needed from four balls for Kangarilla to bank the win and Jack Evans duly delivered. “I’m very happy to get the win,” said Kangarilla skipper Che Martinsen. “We started very well with the ball with Ryan Grimmond and Ben Evans bowling excellently. They consolidated but we were able to take regular wickets and we were confident that we could get the runs but we had to bat well. We struggled in the first 20 overs but managed to hang in there and we had a really important partnership between Brodie May and Lachlan Knight. Lachlan really held us together and he was able to get us over the line in the end for a really important win with some tough matches coming up in the next month.”Meadows moved up to third spot on the HCA ladder following their 52-run victory over Flagstaff Hill at Meadows Oval, their third win in a row. The home side batted first and posted a very competitive score of 8/183 from their 40 overs. The total was set up by a 67-run third wicket stand between Haydn Reid (59 from 94 balls) and Kris Dawe (34 from 39 balls). Luke Tonkin (19) and Anthony Hughes (18 not out) also made handy contributions. Jack Walton (3/51), James Patterson (2/20) and Max Renfrey (2/42) were the multiple wicket takers for the Falcons. Flagstaff Hill got themselves into a strong position with Matthew Adams (42), in just his third 'A' grade game, and Oliver Styles (35) putting on 73 runs for the third wicket as the score reached 2/96. From that moment on however it was the Kris ‘George’ Dawe show as the experienced spinner took career-best figures of 6/17 (6). It was Dawe’s sixth five-wicket haul for the Bulldogs. Skipper Rohan Reid chipped in with 2/19 as ‘Flaggies’ lost their last eight wickets for just 35 runs to be bowled out for 131 in the 36th over.Uraidla won their third game of the season after defeating Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) by five wickets to keep their slight finals chances alive in 2020/21. The Demons chased down SCIB’s total of 8/144 with 9.2 overs to spare. Alex Heptinstall was the hero for Uraidla as he made his highest score for the season with a hard hitting 72 from just 69 balls (11 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Skipper Michael Parker (26) and Ryan Hunter (17 not out) also made solid contributions while Daniel Desengo, in his first game for the season, snared 3/13 from his eight over spell for SCIB. Earlier Scott Creek Ironbank won the toss and decided to bat at the picturesque Uraidla Oval and were soon in strife at 2/4 with Thomas Bassett (2/26) taking both wickets. A 54-run stand between teenager Zane Lewis (31) and Darcy Campbell (30) put SCIB back in the game before the visitors slipped to 7/101 due to some fine bowling from Simon Parker who finished with 4/31 (7). Desengo (30 not out) and Ben McGowan (19) added some late runs but it wasn’t enough to secure their side a maiden win for the season. Mount Lofty moved inside the top four with a gritty two wicket win over ladder leader Aldgate at Heathfield oval. Aldgate batted first and their innings never really got going with Jack Woollard (24 from 40 balls) the only batsman to pass 20. Adam Carthew (2/13) and Aaron Smith (2/33) were the multiple wicket takers for the Redcaps while veteran Dave Bennett bowled a miserly spell to finish with 1/12 (8). Three run outs didn’t help Aldgate’s cause as they were bowled out in the 39th over for 111. Mount Lofty started well with Josh Healey (19) and James Kittel-Neill (11) adding 31 for the first wicket before veteran Perry Edwards entered the attack. Edwards (3/19) dismissed the two openers and then Brad Hutton (4) as the Redcaps were all of a sudden under pressure at 3/39. Two more quick wickets and it was 'game on' with the home side at 5/52. The Redcaps needed a partnership as Dylan Dunbar joined Carthew at the crease. This pair added 50 runs for the sixth wicket to get their side within sight of victory before Dunbar fell for 14. Woollard (4/27) grabbed three quick wickets to keep the Gaters in the hunt for a miraculous victory but it was Carthew who was there at the end with a match winning 40 not out from 65 balls (3 x 4’s) to see his side over the line with an over to spare.
