On a cool night Strathalbyn took on Hahndorf in the ‘A’ grade encounter. Strathalbyn were up to bat first but were put away for no score with a tag out at second, a K2 to pitcher/catcher combo Peyton Daniels to Reggie Fairley and a great catch in the outfield by Mackenzie Bourke.Hahndorf had their lead off batter out at first before some big hits got Nancy Johns home. Strathalbyn worked hard in the field with Emily Eglitis taking a catch in the outfield and another out at first holding Hahndorf to just one run.Strath were looking to make some runs in their second turn at bat and brought in three runs with some great base running and a well timed slide home from Tiahna Mayes before Hahndorf locked the innings down with a K2, an out at home and a catch taken in the outfield by Tracey Luxon. Hahndorf were held without adding to their score in their second turn at bat with the Panthers fielders on fire with Tash Mayes taking a catch in the outfield, an out at first and a catch taken by shortstop Kim Cutting. Strathalbyn wanted to add to their score but were quickly sent from the diamond with Hahndorf’s Tahlia Larosa pitching a K2, an out at first and a catch taken at shortstop by Georgia King. The third batting dig for Hahndorf was also scoreless with another catch to Cutting, an out at first and a tag out at home ending the innings. Britt Jackson brought in the only run for Strathalbyn in the fourth innings before they again were shut down with two outs at first and another K2.Strath needed to stop Hahndorf from scoring and they did with another out at first base and then a great catch in the outfield by Eglitis who then quickly threw to Kerry Wilkinson at first to catch the runner short of the base in a fantastic double play. Hahndorf fought back in the field not allowing the Panthers to gain any more runs in the fifth dig with a catch in the outfield by Mis O’Keefe and two more outs at first base.Hahndorf came out for their fifth turn at bat and didn’t start well with Strath’s pitcher Kelly Roe taking a catch and Cutting again fielding well to make an out at first. Hahndorf gained two runs from good hits and great base running and looked like they could snatch the game from Strath before another great play by Cutting ended the innings and the game with Strathalbyn coming out on top defeating Hahndorf 4-3 for their first win of the season. There was only one slight delay during the game when an Echidna decided to join Strath in the outfield before wandering off into the trees for a more peaceful night. In the other ‘A’ grade game, Torrens Valley Redsox defeated USC Bears 11-2.‘A’ Grade Women LadderHahndorf 4, TVR 4, USC Bears 2, Strathalbyn 2.Strathalbyn ‘C’ grade kicked off round five on a warm Saturday afternoon taking on Macclesfield on Diamond 3. Strathalbyn started strong with Rebecca Sims hitting a single base hit to centrefield, and quickly stealing bases. The Strathalbyn middle order batting then took advantage of gaps in the outfield to consistently push around the diamond and finish the innings with 10 runs. The top of the second innings saw Strathalbyn showcase some strong fielding, with Amy Wouters being tagged out at second by Rebecca Sims from a powerful Bobbie Taylor throw, and Jo Falkland taking a fly catch in leftfield. Macclesfield were unlucky not to make any runs for theinnings. Strong plays in the field from Macclesfield in the bottom of the second saw Bobbie Taylor out at first, and Strathalbyn held to only 3 runs. Macclesfield ended the Strathalbyn innings with a strong short stop tofirst combination to get in to bat again. Macclesfield then dug deep, using gaps in the outfield to push runners around at the top of the third. Their come-back efforts were halted bysome strong fielding at first base by Casey Taylor and Heidi Samuel, seeing Macclesfield close the innings with only 5 runs.Strathalbyn (13) (Best players: Maddison Lippasaar and Jo Falkland) defeated Macclesfield (7) (Best players: Mary Karaitana and Ali Pope)‘C’ Grade Women LadderEchunga 10, Hahndorf White 8, Strathalbyn 6, Hahndorf Black 2, Redsox 2, Macclesfield 2.

Stallions gallop into second spot on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills ladder

18 November 2020, 7:30 PM

Strathalbyn has moved into second spot on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder following a five-wicket win over Bremer/Callington at Callington Oval (Turf) on Saturday. The home side batted first and were under early pressure at 4/37 with Arsalan Eubaid (20) the only batsman in the top four to reach double figures. Jai McMurtrie joined acting captain Johnny Fitzgerald as this pair attempted to resurrect the innings with a 49-run fifth wicket partnership before Fitzgerald was dismissed for 15 with the score at 5/86. McMurtrie went on to top score with 44 from 73 balls (4 x 4’s) but there wasn’t much resistance from the lower order as the Cobras were bowled out for 135 in the 43rd over. Brayden Gaiter (3/25) continued his good season and he was ably supported by Matthew Harris (3/33) and Matt Abbott (2/22). Despite losing Steve Schofield (2) early, Strathalbyn steadied through a 26-run second wicket partnership between Luke Cousins (22) and skipper Mark Abbott before Harris joined Mark Abbott in a match-defining 59-run stand for the third wicket before Harris was dismissed for 26 (43 balls). Abbott continued on to finish with 50 not out (78 balls), his second half century in a row, as the Stallions won by five wickets in the 39th over. Amit Maina was the standout bowler for the Cobras as he snared 3/19 from his nine over spell while Nathan Fitzgerald bowled well to finish with 1/21 (9).Hahndorf moved back inside the top-four with a comfortable 87-run victory on the hill at Wistow. Hahndorf batted first and despite losing Benny Montgomerie (0) early, compiled a healthy total of 6/263 from their 45 overs. The Magpies' big total was set up by Graydon Brand who top scored with 84, his highest score for the Magpies in his third season with the club. Skipper Ryan Trafford-Walker (41 not out), Shaun Tait (32) and Lachlan Huxtable (22) all made handy contributions as well. Harry Burgess (3/57) and Lachlan Elsworthy (2/66) were the multiple wicket takers for the Echidnas. Wistow were under pressure early in the run chase as they slumped to 4/43 before Matt Chapman was joined by Burgess. This pair added 113 for the fifth wicket in a partnership dominated by Chapman. Burgess finished 17 not out while Chapman made his second ‘A’ grade ton with a punishing knock of 113 from 86 balls. His innings included 15 boundaries and five ‘maximums’. The home side finished on 5/176 from their 45 overs. Michael Shanahan was the pick of the Hahndorf bowlers with 2/18 (9).Langhorne Creek remained undefeated through six rounds following their 57-run victory over Mount Barker. Langhorne Creek batted first and got off to a fast start thanks to a 75-run opening stand between Brodie O’Dea (42 from 40 balls) and Daniel Kropp (31 from 27 balls). Once O’Dea and Kropp were dismissed, Mount Barker took control as they reduced the Tigers to 5/98. Jacob Tonkin (7) joined skipper Daniel Cleggett to add 33 runs for the sixth wicket and then David Mudge (27) combined with Cleggett to put on 51 runs for the eighth wicket as the Tigers recovered to make 9/207 from their 45 overs. Cleggett went on to top score with 45 from 68 balls (3 x 4’s) in a very important innings for his side. Five Kookaburras bowlers took wickets with Deklan Porter snaring 3/31 (9). The Kookaburras got off to a good start with the in-form Chris Paterson making 28 from 24 balls (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6) and adding 35 runs for the first wicket with Jackson Lane (20). Paterson has now made 240 runs at an average of 48 to lead the AEHCA in runs scored for 2020/21. Chris Pulford top scored with 29 and there were handy contributions from Rhys Paterson (14) and Simon Turk (14) but no Mount Barker batsman could go on to a big score as the Kookaburras finished their innings at 9/150 from their 45 overs. Six Tigers bowlers took wickets with Darcy Paech continuing his good season with figures of 4/40 from eight overs. Paech has 11 wickets at 15.45 for the season so far. Woodside won their third game of the season with an 85-run victory over Nairne at Woodside Oval. The Razorbacks sent Woodside in to bat and the Warriors started well through in-form openers Tommy Baldock (38) and Dave Wescombe (42) who put on 62 for the first wicket. Four quick wickets to Nairne saw the home side slip to 4/93 and they were in danger of posting a sub-par score before Sam Pullen (29) joined his skipper Brad Collins in a 42-run fifth wicket partnership. Brad Collins continued on and added a further 51 runs for the seventh wicket with Shane Collins (18 not out) as the Warriors finished on 6/201. Brad Collins ended up with 53 not out from just 56 balls. Chad Harrop (2/16) and Matt Hein (2/30) took the bowling honours for Nairne. Kangarilla move to third spot in the Hills Cricket Association after first win over Meadows
Kangarilla move to third spot in the Hills Cricket Association after first win over Meadows

17 November 2020, 1:40 AM

Kangarilla defeated Meadows for the first time since joining the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) in season 2014/15 with an excellent 21-run victory during round five action at Kangarilla Oval on Saturday. Kangarilla batted first with Cole Davy (31 from 34 balls) getting Kangies off to a flying start. The innings was anchored by opening batsman Steve Featherstone who continued his excellent season with a patient 67 from 110 balls. ‘Feathers’ has now scored 225 runs at an average of 45.00 this season. Che Martinsen (16) and Matthew Bertelsmeier (11) helped get the total up to a competitive 9/151 after 40 overs. Kris Dawe, in his second game back at Meadows, took the bowling honours with 4/21 from seven overs. Max Buckley was the other multiple wicket taker with 2/32 (7). The Bulldogs got off to a good start in their run chase as Kris Dawe (28) and Haydn Reid (18) added 43 for the first wicket before Dawe was dismissed. Rohan Reid joined brother Haydn and they added 39 runs for the second wicket as Meadows worked their way to 1/82. The introduction of Featherstone after drinks changed the complexion of the game as he removed Rohan Reid for 32 on his way to figures of 4/16 (8). Martinsen chimed in with the big wicket of Haydn Reid as the Kangies skipper snared 3/26 (8). Martinsen now has 12 wickets this season at the ‘scrooge-like’ average of 7.33 to lead the HCA bowling aggregate through five rounds. Meadows lost their last 9/48 to be bowled out for 130 in the 40th over to give Kangarilla back-to-back wins.Aldgate got themselves back on the winners list after the disappointment of losing their first game of the season last week by beating arch-rival Stirling by 39 runs at Stirling Oval. Aldgate batted first with Mitch Thomas and Jake Turnbull setting a good foundation with a 59-run second wicket stand before Thomas was dismissed for 33 (60 balls). Turnbull continued on for his highest score of the season with 49 (76 balls). Frank Clements (26) and Liam Winskill (24) made handy contributions as Aldgate posted a competitive total of 165. Teenage opening bowler Ned Hopgood continued his good season to snare 4/24 (7.4) while spinners Jack Pick (3/18) and Jack Read (2/27) were the other multiple wicket takers for the Eagles. Stirling’s run chase began poorly with Matty Hansen (2/10) taking two early wickets to have the home side struggling at 2/10. Josh Cox (23) joined Jack Read and the two teenagers started to resurrect the Stirling innings with an important third wicket partnership worth 59 runs. Read went on to top score with 40 from 73 balls. Wickets fell at regular intervals as the Eagles slipped to a precarious position at 7/106. The home side were still an outside chance with the experienced duo of Pick and Pete Fryer at the crease with this pair adding 19 runs for the eighth wicket until Jack Woollard (3/10) ended the game with three wickets in four balls as Stirling were bowled out for 126 in the 36th over. Turnbull (2/21) and Perry Edwards (2/26) were the other main wicket takers for the Gaters.Flagstaff Hill continued their excellent start to the season with a comfortable 68-run at Uraidla. The Falcons batted first and got off to an excellent start with Max Renfrey and Matt Emes adding 118 for the first wicket before Emes was dismissed for 39 (68 balls). Angus Heaton (19) then added 29 runs for the second wicket with Renfrey as the visitors reached 1/148. Renfrey dominated the innings before being dismissed agonisingly short of his first ‘A’ grade century when he fell for 99 from 99 balls. His knock included 15 boundaries and three ‘maximums’. Oliver Styles added 23 (33 balls) as Flagstaff Hill knocked up a healthy 6/196 from their 40 overs. Renzo Gaetan was the standout bowler for Uraidla as he snared 3/29 (8), giving him nine wickets for the season so far. The Uraidla run chase never got going as they slumped to 6/62 with only Ryan Hunter (23) and Ben Sheppard (21) in the top order making it to double figures as Renfrey continued his great day to snare 3/14 (4). Gaetan provided a late highlight for Uraidla as he hit a top scoring 42 batting at number nine. Three wins in a row for Flagstaff Hill sees them sitting on top of the HCA ladder after five rounds.Mount Lofty and Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) played out a thrilling tie at Heathfield Oval on Saturday. SCIB came into the game without a victory while Mount Lofty had a 2-2 win-loss record. Mount Lofty batted first and were under immediate pressure with their top three batsmen back in the shed and the score at 3/19. Brad Hutton joined Aaron Smith (11) and this pair added 33 runs for the fourth wicket. Hutton continued on to top score with 41 from 44 balls (2 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). Peter Giannes (11) and Zac ferguson (10) were the only other Redcaps to reach double figures as they were bowled out in the 34th over for 113. In just his fourth ‘A’ grade game, Mark Kipping took 4/46 (8) for SCIB. He was well supported by skipper Beau Thomas (2/9) and veteran Andy Adams (2/13). After losing Darcy Campbell (2) early, Kipping and Adams added 51 runs for the second wicket to have SCIB well on top. Unfortunately Kipping was run out for 22 and shortly afterwards Adams went for 26 to leave Scott Creek Ironbank at 3/65. After the dismissal of Adams, SCIB collapsed to be 9/100 with Thomas and Ben McGowan left as the last pair at the crease looking for the 14 runs to give their team a first win for 2020/21. The pair inched their way towards victory until Brett Pistola bowled Thomas to tie the game as SCIB were bowled out for 113 in 39 overs. Pistola was the hero for Mount Lofty as he claimed 5/17 from eight overs, his second five-wicket haul, while Will Healey chimed in with 2/22 (8). Ladder (after round 5)Flagstaff Hill 24, Aldgate 24, Kangarilla 18, Mount Lofty 15, Meadows 12, Stirling 12, Uraidla 12, Scott Creek Ironbank 3.

Simon Roberts fires Demons to victory in the Great Southern Cricket Association
Simon Roberts fires Demons to victory in the Great Southern Cricket Association

16 November 2020, 6:30 AM

An amazing spell from Simon Roberts has led Willunga to their third consecutive win to begin the 2020/21 season during round three action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). Willunga and Noarlunga faced off in a top-of-the table clash played over Saturday and Sunday due to the unavailability of Willunga Oval next Saturday (21/11). Former Bradman medallist Roberts took four wickets in five balls, including a hattrick on his way to figures of 7/31 from 15 overs. Noarlunga were 0/65 around 45 minutes before Tea on day two in pursuit of Willunga’s day one total of 7/188 before Roberts struck and at the tea break he had the barely believable figures of 6/2 (6)! On day one, Willunga were sent in to bat and compiled a competitive score of 7/188 from their 70 overs. Noarlunga did well to fight back after the Demons had reached 1/125 through a patient half century from opener Joel Docking (56 from 190 balls) and solid contributions from skipper Luke Harding (27) and Scott Brown (22). Roberts (22) and Sean McIvor (17 not out) helped guide Willunga to their final total. Matthew Ray (4/45) and Jason Scarff (2/45) were the pick of the bowlers for the Shoes with Scarff bowling 24 overs on the trot. Anthony Burgess (31) and Jason Scarff (32) put on 65 for the opening wicket before Roberts struck. Michael Smith (22) also batted well for Noarlunga as the Shoes were bowled out for 124 in the 54th over to go down by 64 runs. “We set the foundation early but to Noarlunga’s credit, they never gave in and the spell of ‘Junior’ (Jason Scarff) and ‘Lamzy’ (Peter Lamz) after tea on the first day was crucial to their comeback,” said Willunga skipper Luke Harding. “No doubt we left some runs out there but we bat deep so I was always confident of getting 180+ and with wickets in hand, it's a luxury to have the experience of Roberts and Rhys Allard, along with Sean McIvor’s fire power to make sure the hard work of the top order wasn’t undone.” The second day was always going to be hard and all bowlers bowled well early and we knew we just needed to get one wicket to put the pressure on. Simon Roberts is an incredible weapon to turn to and he proved he’s a class above and his amazing spell is one we won’t forget quickly.”Port Elliot are in a strong position to win their first game of the 2020/21 season after posting 6/251 on day one of their clash with McLaren Districts at McLaren Vale. It was a real team effort from the Bloods with seven batsmen reaching double figures and three partnerships worth more than 50 runs. Hayden Gordge made his fourth career ‘A’ grade half century as he top scored with 60. He was ably supported by Ben Griffiths (34), Ethan Spriggs (32), Joel Harris (31 not out) and Andrew Steele (29). Five Crushers bowlers took wickets with Stephen Nairn (2/58) the only multiple wicket taker. The game will conclude next Saturday (21/11) with the Crushers also looking for their first win of the season. The match between Encounter Bay and Goolwa is evenly poised at stumps on day one with the Bays sitting at 1/2 in reply to the Magpies first innings of 162. Goolwa got off to a shaky start on the Encounter Bay turf as they fell to 2/11 early before Goolwa skipper Josh Jones was joined by Shaun Burger with this pair adding a valuable 35 runs for the third wicket before Burger was dismissed for 26. Three more wickets fell and at 6/82, Goolwa were in danger of not reaching 100. Jones continued his long vigil and received great support from Tyron Rigney, playing in just his fifth ‘A’ grade game, to add 51 runs for the seventh wicket. Rigney made 26 while Jones continued on to notch his second career half century before being dismissed for 54. Simon Acheson (4/24) took his best ‘A’ grade figures for the Bays while Chris Butler (4/43) bowled well in his first game of the season. Encounter Bay had a difficult six overs to negotiate before stumps and lost opener Josh Hutchesson (0) with Jones finishing his excellent day with a wicket.

On Sunday the Stingrays travelled to Salisbury Oval to take on Northern Districts and the visitors posted a competitive score of 7/116 from their 20 overs. There were several handy contributors for the Stingrays with Ella Wilson (23), Amy Peterson (21), Kelly Armstrong (13) and Jess O’Reilly (13) leading the way. In the run chase only Katie Rowe got going for Northern Districts as she scored 25. The Stingrays bowled a whopping 37 wides to keep the hosts in the game but ultimately the Jets finished on 9/100 from their 20 overs. Five Stingrays bowlers took wickets with Peterson continuing her fine day taking 3/9 (4) while Ella Wilson snared 2/5 (2).The second grade won their second game in succession following a tight 10-run victory over Adelaide University at Park 12 (No. 1). The Stingrays batted first and struggled their way to a total of 91 before being bowled out in the 19th over. Donna Clark (29 from 29 balls) and Cassidy Perkins (25 from 36 balls) put on the best partnership of the innings which was worth 33 runs for the second wicket. Brienna Medder added a handy 16 not out from 15 balls at the end of the innings. Rachel Banham (4/12) and Merrilyn Pfeiffer (3/9) did the damage with the ball for Uni. Adelaide University started their run chase well to reach 1/68 before a run out to Perkins and two wickets to Clark, on her way to figures of 2/9 from three overs, reduced the hosts to 5/81 at the end of their 20 overs.                                                                                                                Next Sunday there’s a big double header at Bice Oval with the first grade taking on Kensington (10.30am) while the second grade face West Torrens (1.40pm).

Stallions back in the top four in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association

11 November 2020, 10:00 PM

Strathalbyn moved back inside the top-four on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder with a six-wicket win over Woodside at Strathalbyn Oval. The Stallions have been inconsistent this season with their form line reading WLWLW through the first five rounds. On Saturday they put in an excellent performance to bowl Woodside out for 137 in the 44th over after the Warriors had got off to an excellent start through opening pair Tommy Baldock and Dave Wescombe. The openers put on 50 runs before the in-form Baldock was dismissed for 29. Wescombe carried on to make 73 from 92 balls (6 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s), his highest score of the season. Sam Pullen (11) was the only other Woodside batsman to reach double figures as the Warriors lost their last six wickets for 27 runs. Brayden Gaiter (3/14), Mark Abbott (3/28) and Zach Reekie (2/28) took the bowling honours for Strathalbyn. The run chase started badly for the Stallions with both openers dismissed and the score sitting at 2/13. Veteran Steve Schofield and skipper Mark Abbott came together to steady the ship with an 88-run third wicket stand before Schofield was dismissed for 40 (93 balls). Abbott continued on to make his highest score of the season with an undefeated 57 (91 balls) to get his side over the line in the 44th over. Four Woodside bowlers took wickets with Steve Ball (1/11 off nine overs) and Shane Collins (1/14 off eight overs) bowling excellent spells.Hahndorf won their second game of the year with a comfortable five-wicket win over Lobethal at Hahndorf Oval. The Tigers batted first and reliable opening pair, Ben Matthews and Mitch Weeks, got them off to a good start with a 72-run opening stand before Weeks was dismissed for 22 (36 balls). Matthews went on to top score with 46 from 85 balls (5 x 4’s), his highest score of 2020/21. Unfortunately the rest of the batsmen didn’t contribute much with only Matt Martin (18) and Matt Jenkin (11) making it to double figures. The Magpies strong bowling attack shared the wickets around with Benny Montgomerie (3/18), skipper Ryan Trafford-Walker (3/30), Shaun Tait (2/23) and Michael Shanahan (2/34) doing all the damage. In the run chase, Montgomerie continued his good day for Hahndorf as he made the third ‘A’ grade half century of his career with a top-scoring 54. Graydon Brand (27) and Greg Hassold (16) made handy contributions as the winning runs were knocked off in the 35th over. Will Zadow (2/17) and Cam Winen (2/33) were the pick of the Lobethal bowlers.Nairne have hit form with three consecutive wins to leapfrog their way into second spot on the AEHCA ladder. On Saturday they hosted Mount Barker and after winning the toss and batting, the Razorbacks were in deep trouble at 5/40. Kookaburras vice-captain Simon Turk took four of those wickets en-route to his best figures for Mount Barker of 4/29 (9). A rescue job was needed and Richard Boscence (22) and Mitch Hein set about just that with a 53-run sixth wicket union. Once Boscence was dismissed, Mitch Hein was joined by brother Matt (14) in another excellent partnership, this time worth 60 runs for the seventh wicket before Mitch was dismissed for a career-best 62. Chad Harrop (26 not out) and Brodie Clarke (11 not out) then put on an undefeated 38-run stand for the ninth wicket to lift the Razorbacks to 8/197 from their 45 overs. A total scarcely believable after the start they had. The Kookaburras were brave in their run chase as Chris Paterson and Turk added 66 runs for the third wicket as Mount Barker got themselves to 2/106. Unfortunately once Turk was dismissed for 24 (25 balls) it was all left up to Paterson as the run chase faltered, ultimately ending 36 runs short at 8/161. Paterson went on to make 95 from 141 balls (5 x 4’s, 5 x 6’s), his second half century in a row after making 89 last week against Bremer/Callington. Matt Hein snared 3/45 (7) with Clarke (2/13) and Harrop (2/31) adding good support.Langhorne Creek continued their unbeaten start to the season with a huge 155-run victory over Wistow at the Creek. Wistow lost the toss and started well in the field as the Tigers were soon in trouble at 2/32 with Lachlan Elsworthy (2/57) claiming both wickets. That was pretty much the end of the good news for the Echidnas as Daniel Kropp and Ben Warren added 128 runs for the third wicket to take the game away. Warren smashed his way to 85 from just 62 balls (12 x 4’s, 1 x 6) while Kropp made his highest ‘A’ grade score with 67 from 64 balls (9 x 4’s, 1 x 6). The Echidnas hit back with four quick wickets before Troy Blackwell (40 not out) and Jacob Tonkin (32) lifted Langhorne Creek to a total of all out 264 (44.4). Josh Fidler (2/44) joined Elsworthy with two wickets for Wistow. The visitors could only muster 109 in reply as they were bowled out in the 36th over. Lachlan Elsworthy top scored for Wistow with 35. Blackwell’s good day continued as he snared 4/25 (8.3) and he was well supported by Brodie O’Dea with 3/23 (9).        Bremer/Callington had the bye.Ladder (after round 5)Langhorne Creek 20, Nairne 12, Lobethal 12, Strathalbyn 12, Woodside 8, Hahndorf 8, Bremer/Callington 4, Mount Barker 4, Wistow 0.Round 6 fixtures (home team named first)Bremer/Callington v StrathalbynWistow v HahndorfMount Barker v Langhorne CreekWoodside v NairneLobethal has the bye

Flagstaff Hill go top of the Hills Cricket Association ladder
Flagstaff Hill go top of the Hills Cricket Association ladder

11 November 2020, 1:30 AM

Flagstaff Hill has taken over on top of the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ladder with their third win of the season, this time by seven wickets over Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Flagstaff Hill. SCIB won the toss and batted first and that was pretty much where the good news ended for the visitors as they were rolled for just 43 in the 28th over. Veteran Andy Adams (13) was the only batsman to make double figures. Playing his first ‘A’ grade game for the Falcons after moving from Kangarilla this season, Lenny Berkefeld was the chief destroyer with the amazing figures of 5/4 from six overs! James Patterson (2/7) and Jack Walton (2/14) were the other multiple wicket takers. Patterson has taken nine wickets at an average of 7.89 so far in 2020/21 to be equal top of the HCA wicket takers list this season. Flagstaff Hill made the runs in just 11 overs as they finished on 3/44. Ollie Styles top scored with 19 while Matt Emes made 15 not out. Danny Coleman held his head high for Scott Creek Ironbank with 3/4 from three overs. Meadows moved back inside the top-four on the HCA ladder following a tight three-wicket win over Mount Lofty at Heathfield Oval. Mount Lofty batted first and got off to a good start with the returning Josh Healey (27) and James Kittel-Neill (39) adding 41 runs for the first wicket. Once Healey and Kittel-Neill were dismissed, the Redcaps fell to 4/82 before Aaron Smith and Adam Carthew came together to put on 77 for the fifth wicket. Smith went on to top score with 48 (65 balls) while Carthew continued his good recent form to make 38 (64 balls). The home side ended up with a competitive total of 7/171 from their 40 overs. Four Meadows bowlers got wickets with Cal Blackwell (3/30) the standout. After losing Luke Tonkin (9) early, Rohan Reid joined brother Haydn and the experienced duo added 42 runs for the second wicket before Haydn was dismissed for 21. Wickets fell at regular intervals after that and at 7/151, it was anyone’s game as teenager Oscar Tydeman (10 not out) joined his skipper Rohan Reid. It was a cricketing case of ‘the master and the apprentice’ as the pair pushed the Bulldogs to victory with 11 balls to spare after an undefeated 22-run stand for the eighth wicket. Reid finished with a match-winning 86 not out from 96 balls (8 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). “It was a great game of Cricket,” said Meadows skipper Rohan Reid. “The game ebbed and flowed and Mount Lofty took advantage of us dropping a number of catches. We managed to peg them back in the end through some tight bowling from Cal, Max, Chad & Kris to keep them to 171. With the bat we continue to give away some cheap wickets but we managed to get the win in the end and we also had some luck with a few dropped catches.”Kangarilla pulled off a sensational five-run win over previously undefeated Aldgate at Kangarilla Oval to move up to third spot on the ladder. Aldgate appeared to be cruising to victory at 2/70 chasing Kangarilla’s total of 8/121 before a collapse of 8/46 saw the Gaters bowled out for 116 in the 40th over. Earlier Kangarilla were also in a strong position at 3/98 before their innings stalled in the latter overs as Aldgate restricted their run scoring. The key partnership for Kangies was between Matthew Bertelsmeier (48 from 91 balls) and teenager Lachlan Knight (32 from 69 balls). This pair came together at 3/37 and put on 61 for the fourth wicket. Jack Woollard (3/24) and Matty Hansen (2/22) were the multiple wicket takers for Aldgate while skipper Jake Turnbull was very economical with 1/8 from his eight overs. Mitch Thomas (25) continued his good early season form and with Liam Winskill (18) and the returning Frank Clements (17) adding 34 for the third wicket, all seemed rosy for Aldgate. The game was turned on its head as Kangarilla skipper Che Martinsen bowled an inspired spell to snare 3/7 from his eight overs while Jack Evans took 3/34 (7.4). Steve Featherstone proved very hard to get away through the middle of the innings as he took 1/8 (8). Turnbull tried to lift his side over the line with 27 not out from 32 balls but it was to no avail as the home side won their second game of the season. “I was very excited to see both Bertelsmeier and Knight get some runs, especially Knight who at 17 years of age batted beyond his years,” said Martinsen. “We started off our bowling innings a little inconsistently but we managed to take a few wickets. After drinks we knew that the next five to 10 overs would be key. ‘Feathers’ bowled eight straight overs and I bowled six straight and we took some key wickets and didn’t go for many runs. We needed that win to keep us in touch with the top teams.”Stirling won their second game in a row after defeating Uraidla by five wickets at Stirling Oval. Uraidla batted first and really struggled against a disciplined Eagles attack. Teenager Mason Pitt (10) was the only Demons batsman to make double figures as the visitors were rolled for just 63 in the 40th over. Five Stirling bowlers took wickets with Kosta Sinodinos returning the amazing figures of 3/3 from his eight overs! He was ably supported by Pete Fryer (2/6) and the returning Chris Shaw (2/8). It appeared to be an easy proposition for the home sided but at 5/32, Uraidla had the scent of an incredible victory in their nostrils. The experienced Fryer was the key to the Eagles and along with Jacob Kemp (7 not out), they got their side over the line to win by five wickets in the 22nd over. Fryer went on to make 24 not out from 47 balls (2 x 4’s). Fryer has batted on four occasions this season and is yet to be dismissed while making 70 runs. For Uraidla, Simon Parker (3/20) and teenager George Bond (2/18) took all five wickets to fall.Ladder (after round 4)Flagstaff Hill 18, Aldgate 18, Kangarilla 12, Meadows 12, Mount Lofty 12, Stirling 12, Uraidla 12, Scott Creek Ironbank 0.Round 5 fixtures (home team named first)Kangarilla v MeadowsStirling v AldgateMount Lofty v Scott Creek IronbankUraidla v Flagstaff Hill

Stingrays Women undefeated after three rounds of SACA T-20 competition

10 November 2020, 7:30 PM

Southern District Women’s first grade had a 15-run win over West Torrens to stay undefeated after three rounds of the SACA Women’s T20 competition. On Sunday the Stingrays hosted West Torrens at Bice Oval and posted a competitive score of 6/123 from their 20 overs. The innings was set up by a 38-run third wicket partnership between Ella Wilson and Sheridan Howell (17). Wilson continued on to top score with 32 from 32 balls. A handy undefeated 30-run seventh-wicket partnership between Hannah Armstrong (16 not out) and Amy Peterson (9 not out) lifted the Stingrays to their final total. West Torrens got off to a good start to reach 1/50 as Angela Treloar (39) was on fire for the Eagles. The home side fought back to take the next seven wickets for 55 runs with the West Torrens innings finishing at 8/108, 15 runs short. Five Stingrays bowlers took wickets with Gemma Kennedy snaring 3/23 (3) to put the reigning premier on top of the ladder. The second grade were also at Bice Oval in the second game of the double header taking on Sturt. It was a game dominated by the bowlers with the home side coming out on top by 10 runs. Southern District batted first and were bowled out in just the 15th over for 56. Caitlin Seccafien did well to carry her bat for 18 not out (48 balls) while Annabelle Yelland added some support at the end of the innings with 11 (17 balls). The Stingrays needed quick wickets and that’s just what they got with Caitlin Perkins (2/2) getting the first two wickets to leave Sturt reeling at 2/1. The Blues could never get into the run chase as they finished on 7/46 from their 20 overs. Four Stingrays bowlers took wickets with Donna Clark (2/10) joining Perkins as a multiple wicket taker.                                                                                                                 Next Sunday the first grade take on Northern Districts (10.30am) at Salisbury Oval while the second grade face Adelaide University at Park 12 (No. 1) from 1.00pm.

Goolwa win their first game of the season with a fighting win over Port Elliot in the GSCA
Goolwa win their first game of the season with a fighting win over Port Elliot in the GSCA

10 November 2020, 6:00 AM

Goolwa pulled off an excellent come-from-behind victory over local rival Port Elliot during the second round of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at Goolwa Oval on Saturday. The Magpies were in deep trouble at 4/59 as they chased down Port Elliot’s competitive total of 6/159 from their 40 overs. Former Port Elliot skipper Jesse Consalvo, who returned to Goolwa this season, then played a match-winning hand of 73 not out to get the Magpies over the line by two wickets in the 38th over. Earlier in the day, Port Elliot won the toss and batted first with young all-rounder Colby Whitbourne playing a standout innings of 85 from 96 balls (6 x 4’s & 6 x 6’s). Whitbourne has started 2020/21 well with 117 runs from two innings. Whitbourne was well supported by Hayden Gordge who struck 24 not out from 29 balls. Jayden Crees was the pick of the bowlers for Goolwa taking 2/16 (8). Jake Ashton-Place also snared a couple of wickets to finish with 2/33 (8). Goolwa’s reply got off to a bad start as they slumped to 3/38 with Ben Maier, back from a stint with Western Youth Centre in the Adelaide & Suburban Cricket Association, the chief destroyer taking 3/21 from six overs. When Magpies all-rounder Andy Evans (10), in his 200th game, was dismissed by Liam Harris (2/38), the home side were in deep trouble needing 100 runs from just 16 overs. Enter Consalvo as he combined with Jake Kuss (24) to put on 44 runs for the fifth wicket. Four more wickets fell to leave Goolwa needing 18 runs to win with just two wickets in hand. Crees (7 not out) joined Consalvo to see the Magpies to victory with two overs to spare in an excellent game of Cricket. Noarlunga has started their 2020/21 campaign with consecutive victories following a 39-run triumph over a visiting McLaren Districts outfit. The home side batted first and posted a very competitive total of 5/182 from their 40 overs. Shoes skipper Jason Scarff made his second half century for the season as he compiled a fine innings of 85 from 95 balls before being run out. He added 52 runs for the second wicket with brother David Scarff (25) while Michael Smith (34 not out) and Jeff Colo (8 not out) added an invaluable 45 runs in an undefeated sixth wicket stand. Four Crushers bowlers took wickets with Andrew Fechner (1/23 off 8) the most economical. The visitors were never really in the hunt during their run chase as they slumped to 7/98 in reply. Luke Goodieson played a lone hand in the top order for McLaren with a top-scoring 40 (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6’s). Bodie Wilson (34 not out) and David Smith (20 not out) put some respectability on the scoreboard with a 45-run partnership to see McLaren Districts finish on 7/143 after their 40 overs. Ethan Alderman took the bowling honours again for the Shoes with figures of 3/23 from eight overs. Alderman has taken seven wickets in the opening two games at an average of 6.71 to lead the GSCA wicket tally. David Scarff (2/28) and Matty Ray (2/32) were the other wicket takers for Noarlunga.Willunga has also started the season with back-to-back victories, this time by seven wickets at Encounter Bay. The Demons sent the home side in and it was a real struggle for the Bays as they slipped to a precarious 5/26 before skipper Cam Lintern and Ambrose Willoughby added 36 runs for the sixth wicket. Lintern was ultimately dismissed for a top-scoring 31 as the Bays lurched to 8/77 from their 40 overs. Tye McIvor (2/3 off 8) & Simon Roberts (2/18 off 7) were the multiple wicket takers for the Demons while special mention needs to be made of Luke Goldner’s miserly spell of 1/0 from six overs! Encounter Bay needed a miracle and they were off to a good start as Willunga fell to 3/39 with Riley Williams (2/15) and Shane Hastings (1/16) doing the early damage. Roberts (29 not out) and Braden Altus (9 not out) steadied the ship to see the Demons home by seven wickets in the 28th over. Ladder (after round 2)Noarlunga 12, Willunga 12, Goolwa 6, Encounter Bay 6, Port Elliot 0, McLaren Districts 0.Round 3 fixtures (two-day games/home team named first)Willunga v Noarlunga*McLaren Districts v Port ElliotEncounter Bay v Goolwa*Game to be played on Saturday 14/11 & Sunday 15/11. In only their second game for the season due to weather interruptions in previous rounds, Strathalbyn took on Torrens Valley at Anembo Park in Mount Barker. Strathalbyn batted first but were sent from the diamond with two catches and an out at first base ending the innings. Torrens Valley were also out quickly in their batting dig with an out at first and catches taken by Emily Eglitis in the outfield and Kelly Roe at first base holding them scoreless. The second batting dig for Strath was also quick with no runs gained with Torrens Valley fielding well with two outs at first base and a catch in the outfield by Mackenzie Ween. This brought Torrens Valley back in to bat and Strathalbyn were on fire in the field with a catch in the outfield by Tash Mayes and two K2’s to pitcher/catcher combo Tessa Norris to Kim Cutting for a three up/three down innings with no score. Strathalbyn needed to get on the scoreboard and the innings started with Tiahna Mayes getting safely on to base and forcing an error to get her to second before she stole third base. Norris had a hit to the outfield which brought Mayes home but the next three batters got out which left Norris stranded but with one run finally on the board. Some big hitting and great running from Torrens Valley brought in six runs before Strath could make the three outs with a catch to Cutting at home, a runner out for interference and another catch to Eglitis in the outfield. Strathalbyn’s fourth turn at bat was again quick with three up/ three down, two outs at first base and a K2 to pitcher/catcher combination Courtney May to Georgia Ballard. Strath needed to hold Torrens Valley as much as they could and started well with an out at first base but again great hitting and base running brought in another three runs. A tag out at first and some good fielding from shortstop Crystal Karayiannis, who threw to first for the last out to end the innings. The final score was Torrens Valley 9 to Strathalbyn 1.In the other ‘A’ grade game, Hahndorf had a big 19-1 win over USC Bears to remain undefeated and on top of the ladder.‘A’ Grade Women LadderHahndorf 4, USC Bears 2, TVR 2, Strathalbyn 0.‘A’ Grade Women Fixtures (Anembo Park Diamond 1)Strathalbyn v Hahndorf (Friday 6.30pm)USC Bears v TVR (Friday 8.15pm)

Fleurieu Surf Life Saving Club to undergo major redevelopment
Fleurieu Surf Life Saving Club to undergo major redevelopment

06 November 2020, 9:00 PM

After more than a decade of planning, Surf Life Saving SA is proud to reveal the plans of the redevelopment of the Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club. It is currently the biggest Surf Lifesaving Club re-development in the state. Boasting a new patrol and first aid area, training and change rooms, as well as a jet-ski storage area, the complete rebuild will give patrolling members state-of-the-art facilities to help save lives along one of the most beautiful beaches in South Australia. The build is expected to be completed by the end of May 2021 and Surf Life Saving SA CEO, Damien Marangon hopes South Australian’s will be proud of their latest hub that will help and honour the efforts of the dedicated volunteers in the important region. “The PESLSC and the precinct at Horseshoe Bay represents an important part of our strategy of looking after South Australians. The rebuild means we can continue efforts to service the community and the south coast. We know what the PESLSC means to the local communities and how it is a high visitation place,” Mr Marangon explained. The local community will also benefit, with the plans including a function room and café deck for outdoor dining. PESLSC president Peter Francis and his team have worked tirelessly on the project to make sure the local community were consulted and the design reflects what locals and tourists were asking for. “The development will not only help save lives but be a boost for the family culture at the club and will definitely sustain the club's future well into the future. The building will be a jewel in the crown of our town and it's likely the site will become a rescue hub for the Encounter Coast so we've planned ahead for this in the scale of the build," PESLSC president Peter Francis explained. South Australian builder, Partek Construction and Interiors won the tender to deliver the build and will be led by local architect Terry Boxall from Intro Architecture. Fundraising efforts by the Club, as well as significant contributions from The State Government, Surf Life Saving SA and the Alexandrina Council support the project. “It is promising to see this build inch closer to reality. It will create 20 trade jobs during construction and mean a further 10 staff will be employed in the function space when complete, providing a boost for the local economy and community,” Emergency Services Minister Vincent Tarzia said. During the build, and throughout summer, lifesaving will continue at Horseshoe Bay, with patrols on the beach weekends and public holidays from Saturday, October 10th, through to Easter Monday on April 5th 2021. Lifesavers will be based out of containers on the lawns in front of the caravan park, giving them fast access to holidaymakers and locals on the beach. As the Port Elliot community enters this exciting new stage of its club and town’s history, South Australians can take part by joining as a volunteer or supporting the club. You don't have to get up every morning and train. You don't even have to get your toes wet. Find out how at https://www.surflifesavingsa.com.au/become-a-surf-life-saver
