Car parking mistakes prompt rules reminder
Car parking mistakes prompt rules reminder

Results of an RAA road rules quiz show most drivers don’t understand basic rules around car parking and may be leaving themselves open to potential fines, prompting a call for motorists to brush up on their knowledge.Only 44 per cent of respondents to the quiz in RAA’s samove magazine knew that drivers are allowed to stop in a ‘no parking’ zone for up to two minutes to load or unload passengers or goods, with a large portion believing it was illegal to stop in those zones at all.Further, only 37 per cent knew they were required to leave a 3-metre gap when parking opposite another car on a narrow street. When it came to parallel parking, only 22 per cent of respondents knew they were required to leave a minimum gap of one metre in front and behind when parallel parking on a road without marked spaces. The quiz had more than 3,500 respondents.RAA Senior Manager Safety & Infrastructure Charles Mountain says many of the road rules surrounding car parking were complex, and drivers should brush up on them to avoid a fine.“Car parking rules can be complex and technical, but knowing what they are is important,” Mr Mountain says.“It’s concerning that only 37 per cent of respondents knew they were required to leave a 3-metre gap when parking opposite another car on a narrow street.“This is a real problem as more vehicles are parking in our local streets than ever which can restrict access for ambulances, fire appliances and waste collection trucks.“Also, knowing the minimum gap to leave when parallel parking is important to allow drivers to get out of a parking area, and give people access to the rear of their vehicles to load or unload items.“Finding somewhere to park can be difficult, especially in the CBD and metropolitan shopping precincts, so knowing things like minimum distances to leave between other vehicles will ensure you avoid a fine and show common courtesy to other drivers.”Mr Mountain encourages drivers to regularly brush up on their road rules knowledge online.“We encourage all road users to review current road rules online – the State Government’s My Licence website is a great resource where you can do this.“Some new road rules were introduced earlier this year, so drivers should familiarise themselves with them to avoid confusion on the road and ensure they’re obeying the law.“If you have any specific questions, you can also contact RAA’s Road Safety team for advice either on the website or by calling 8202 4517.”

Support Local News: The Fleurieu App Joins the #OurNewsYourVoice CampaignFrom June 3-7, the Fleurieu App will participate in Australia's first nationwide fundraiser for local news, the #OurNewsYourVoice campaign. This initiative, organized by the Local and Independent News Association (LINA), aims to support local publications across the country, including those in the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island regions.Earlier this month, the owner and editor of the Fleurieu App, Susie Williams, attended LINA's annual conference in Port Douglas. Federal Communications Minister Michelle Rowland’s opening address, where she praised the contributions of independent media.Despite the recognition, LINA’s executive director, Claire Stuchbery, pointed out in her May newsletter that the recent Commonwealth Budget did not allocate direct funding for news publishers. This omission is a setback for the many small, independent publications that emerged to fill the gaps left by mainstream media closures during the pandemic."Meeting fellow independent publishers at the conference was both inspiring and invigorating" says Susie. National coastal conference in Onkaparinga
National coastal conference in Onkaparinga

29 May 2024, 2:30 AM

Climate change risks and the impacts of short-term rentals on coastal communities are among the key topics of a national coastal conference that started today, Wednesday 29 May.The 2024 Australian Coastal Councils Conference brings together scientific experts, politicians and coastal local government leaders from across Australia to discuss practical ways to plan for and manage key coastal challenges. The City of Onkaparinga is hosting the 3-day conference at the McLaren Vale Function Centre, where it will also launch the council’s new seven-year Coastal Adaptation Plan. “This evidence-based plan, developed with extensive community engagement, identifies risks and proposes responses aligned with scientific research and community values’” says City of Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were.“But the plan also highlights the urgent need for a joint approach to coastal adaptation from all tiers of government.“Councils alone cannot fund the full ranges of measures that are required now and into the future. The Australian coastline is a crucial social, economic, and environmental asset, and it’s facing increasing threats from extreme weather events, coastal erosion, and sea-level rise.“Coastal councils are at the frontline of managing these risks but lack the necessary resources and national framework to address them effectively.“The establishment of the Disaster Ready Fund by the Australian Government in 2022, providing up to $200 million annually for natural disaster resilience, is a welcome step, but it falls short of meeting the requirements for successful coastal adaptation on a national scale.”In response, coastal councils are calling for the creation of a National Coastal Adaptation Fund and a National Coastal Adaptation Working Group.Key highlights of the 2024 Australian Coastal Councils Conference will include:Short-term Rentals in Urban and Coastal Communities – The release of interim findings of an important new study by the University of Sydney, which examines the impacts and proposed policy responses to the growth in short-term holiday properties in urban and coastal areas. The IPCC AR6 Sea-Level Rise Projections – A presentation on the latest sea-level rise projections by the International Panel on Climate Change.Building a Resilient Australia – on insurance affordability and availability in a changing climate.Coastal Policy Forum – The forum will consider priority coastal policy issues for the management and sustainability of Australia’s coastal communities and coastal environment.See the full conference program at the Australian Coastal Councils Association Inc. website.

Heed heater safety ahead of winter
Heed heater safety ahead of winter

28 May 2024, 8:36 PM

With the Fleurieu's golden autumn almost over and the winter chill about to set in RAA Insurance is urging South Australians to check if their heater needs servicing.New data shows heaters and air-conditioners contributed to more than 2,400 insurance claims in the last five years, with an annual average of 483 home and contents insurance claims between 2019-2023 – including causing more than 100 house fires. It’s recommended homeowners service any reverse cycle air conditioning units once per year, and any gas heating units every 1-2 years – to ensure all components are working safely and effectively. RAA Insurance Head of Claims Jess Lyons says the lead-up to winter is a great time to check heaters are working as they should. “Almost all air conditioner or heater issues are preventable, and they can be disastrous, resulting in minor damage or much more costly repairs,” Ms Lyons says. “Each year we have hundreds of home and contents claims because of heaters and air conditioners – with some of those resulting in considerable damage to both home and contents.“Keeping on top of your heater’s maintenance will not only ensure it’s working effectively and prolong it’s lifespan, but it also helps identify and address any potential issues before they escalate – such as electrical faults or, in the case of gas units, carbon monoxide leaks.”Ms Lyons also reminds people to follow the manufacturer’s directions for use, like ensuring no clothing, toys or other items are touching heating units or blocking their airflow.RAA Insurance recommends the following tips for preparing heaters for winter:Schedule a professional service if it’s been more than 1-2 years.Replace or clean filters regularly to maintain optimal airflow.Check for any signs of wear and tear, such as strange noises or unusual odours.Ensure proper ventilation around the unit.Consider upgrading to a more energy-efficient model if your heater is outdated.South Australians looking to book a service for their heater or air conditioner can do so via RAA Trade Assist.

CFS Issues Urgent Warning Ahead of High Fire Danger Day
CFS Issues Urgent Warning Ahead of High Fire Danger Day

28 May 2024, 10:25 AM

The South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) is urging residents to exercise extreme caution when conducting burn offs on their properties, as the state braces for a high fire danger day tomorrow. With temperatures set to rise and strong northerly winds expected, the fire risk will be significantly heightened across many parts of South Australia. In anticipation of potential fires, the CFS has placed five aircraft on standby. This fleet includes three Single Engine Airtankers (SEATs) and two observational aircraft, ready to assist firefighters should any fires escalate.Over the past two days, more than 20 fires have been ignited by uncontrolled private burn offs—11 on Monday alone and nine more as of 2pm on Tuesday. This follows an extremely busy April and May for CFS volunteers, who have responded to numerous out-of-control burn offs where property owners were either unprepared or caught off guard.State Duty Officer Ben Pettman emphasized the need for vigilance given the forecasted conditions, which include strong winds, warmer temperatures, and dry fuel loads."We know bushfires can start as late as May," Mr. Pettman says. "While CFS aircraft and volunteer firefighters are prepared to respond if a fire starts, it's crucial for the community to do their part in reducing the risk of rural fires."Mr. Pettman advised residents to delay any planned burn offs until after the cool, wet change expected on Thursday. He also urged those who have recently conducted burn offs to ensure they are fully extinguished. "For large piles, we suggest pulling apart the pile with a rake or similar equipment to ensure there are no hot pockets and to extinguish the pile using water," he added.South Australian communities are encouraged to stay informed tomorrow through multiple sources and to have a plan in place in case a bushfire starts. For more information, visit the CFS website at www.cfs.sa.gov.au.

Precinct under pressure
Precinct under pressure

27 May 2024, 8:37 PM

The City of Victor Harbor is concerned that a misinformation campaign is undermining its plans for a Regional Community Sport and Recreation Precinct. It is urging the community to talk to someone at council in person, over the phone or via email if they have concerns or questions about the project. The council is planning to partner with a private consortium to develop The Precinct. It is conducting community consultation on two aspects of the proposal: removing the community land classification for a portion of Lot 202 Armstrong Road and the council’s proposed financial contribution. In its draft annual budget the council has proposed a 1.2 per cent increase to rates, on top of the CPI rise of 4.8 percent to help cover the costs of The Precinct.Further extra rates rises are projected over the next few years to pay for the project.Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins says the Council wants to make sure the community is informed about the current proposal. “Like many major projects we’ve had in the past, there is some misinformation circulating in the community.”She wants residents, ratepayers and organisations to get their information from the council directly, from the Your Say web page or by attending one of the upcoming budget listening posts. “We’re certainly not shying away and we’re more than happy to share any information we can. “In particular, some residents are raising questions about the cost of The Precinct project. Under the current proposal, Council’s contribution towards the project will be $11.7 million – that’s $4 million in 2024/25 and $7.7 million in 2025/26. “The contribution will be attributed to the operating budget and funding through borrowings to spread the cost over generations and minimise the impact on ratepayers.“It’s important to reiterate that the upfront and ongoing costs required of Council under the private partnership are significantly lower than what was estimated for Council to construct and operate the facility itself. There are also grant funding opportunities that Council is pursuing to further reduce the upfront contribution.” The council estimates The Precinct to be worth around $40 million a multi-purpose hub, which includes a sport and recreation facility, childcare, allied health and entertainment offerings. It says for this to be commercially viable for the private partner, the council needs to enter into a long-term lease agreement for a portion of Lot 202 Armstrong Road. This means revoking the community land status for a portion of the site, with the remainder staying community open-space and the council retaining ownership of the whole site. More information about The Precinct is available at on the Your Say web page. www.yoursay.victor.sa.gov.au.The council can be contacted by phone 8551 0500 or email   Listening Posts will be held at various locations over the next week:Thursday 30 May at Victor Central Shopping Centre from 10am to 3pm.Saturday 1 June at Victor Harbor Farmers' Market, in Grosvenor Gardens, from 8am to 11am.Tuesday 4 June at Victor Central Shopping Centre from 10am to 3pmThursday 6 June at a public meeting at the Civic Centre from 6.30pm.The deadline for feedback is 5pm on Tuesday 11 June.
