Strathalbyn remain top in the AEHCA

Strathalbyn consolidated top position on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder with a two-wicket victory at Langhorne Creek on Saturday in round 10 action. The home side won the toss and elected to bat first and they were always under pressure as they could only muster a score of 96 before being bowled out in the 35th over. Ben Warren (24) was the only Tigers batsman to pass 20 as they lost their last nine wickets for just 58 runs. Matt Hein continued his excellent season with the ball as he took 5/23 from seven overs. It was Hein’s second five-wicket haul for the Stallions and now sees him sit atop the wicket taking list in the association with 22 wickets at an average of just 9.00. Danny Horan (3/31) was the other multiple wicket taker for the Stallions. Strathalbyn’s run chase got off to the worst possible start with Warren (4/30) taking three wickets in the second over of the innings to leave the Stallions in deep trouble at 3/3. Matt Roberts (19) and Matt Abbott (35) then steadied the ship with a 45-run fourth wicket stand and despite slipping to 7/82 when Abbott was dismissed, Strathalbyn knocked off the runs in the 36th over.Bremer-Callington won their second game for the season with a comprehensive 55-run win at Mount Barker. The Cobras batted first and got off to a good start as Jeff Garrett and Mitchell Crisp added 44 for the first wicket before Garrett was dismissed for 27. Crisp continued on and was joined in an innings defining partnership of 75 for the fourth wicket by Johnny Fitzgerald (44 from 34 balls). Crisp finished with 64 (129 balls), his highest ‘A’ grade score as the Cobras managed 5/185 from their 45 overs. Deklan Porter (2/31) and Simon Turk (2/37) were the multiple wicket takers for Mount Barker. The Kookaburras were never in the run chase as they slumped to 6/82 with only Wayne Buckland (46) and Chris Paterson (38) showing any real resistance. Buckland and Ishan Razik breathed some life into the match with a 48-run seventh wicket stand before the last four ‘Burras wickets fell for no score as they were bowled out in the 33rd over for 130. Arsalan Eubaid (3/4), Johnny Fitzgerald (2/17) and Crisp (2/39) were the chief destroyers for the Cobras.Wistow had the bye while the Lobethal vs Hahndorf and Nairne vs Woodside matches were abandoned due to the Cudlee Creek bushfire on Friday. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible event. The competition now takes a break over the Christmas holiday period with the season recommencing on the 11th of January.

Frank Clements (3/13) and Matty Hansen (3/30) were the pick of the bowlers for Aldgate. The Gaters run chase started in solid fashion with Josh Callaghan and Mitch Thomas putting on 22 for the first wicket before Thomas was dismissed. After that it was all Meadows with only Harry Morbey (30) passing 20 for the reigning premier. Rohan Reid (3/18), Anthony Hughes (3/22) and Brad Dawe (2/1) were the multiple wicket takers for the Bulldogs who continued their stranglehold on top position.Stirling moved into second spot on the HCA ladder with a hard fought four-wicket victory at Kangarilla. The home side batted first and were immediately in big trouble with both openers dismissed and the score sitting precariously at 2/0. Matthew Bertelsmeier (56) and Carlos Venter (29) then set about a rescue mission for Kangies as they added 60 runs for the third wicket before Venter was dismissed. Stirling continued to take regular wickets before Kangarilla eventually finished at 9/147 from their 40 overs. Teenager Myles Collins (4/30) and opening bowler Dan Parfitt (3/23) were the chief destroyers for the Eagles. Stirling struggled in the run chase as they slipped to 5/45 with only Kosta Sinodinos (20) providing any resistance with Kangarilla opening bowler Steve Featherstone bowling an excellent spell of 2/18 from his eight overs. Stirling badly needed a partnership and they got one as Jacob Gonzalez joined veteran Pete Fryer and this pair set about chasing down the required target. Gonzalez made a hard-hitting 46 from just 40 balls as he and Fryer added a crucial 81 runs for the sixth wicket. Once Gonzalez was dismissed, Fryer continued on to make 36 not out and with help from Collins (seven not out), put on 23 runs for the seventh wicket to see the Eagles home with four overs to spare. Mount Lofty won their second consecutive game as they defeated Bridgewater by 29 runs at Heathfield Oval. The Redcaps batted first and it was slow going as they reached 7/137 from their 40 overs. The innings was set up by a 57-run second wicket stand between skipper Jordan Neis-Beer (42) and Josh Healey (42). Neis-Beer then added a further 36 runs for the third wicket with James Kittel-Neill (10). Luke Hoyle (2/20), Rhys Jordan (2/24) and Jamie Drew (2/25) were the multiple wicket takers for the Raiders. Bridgewater started their run chase well as Kieran McCaw (20) and Charles Birnie (16) put on 40 for the first wicket but from then on it was all Mount Lofty as they bowled the Raiders out for 108 after 39 overs. Adam Carthew took 3/11 from eight overs and he was well supported by Max Hawke (2/11) and Brad Hutton (2/23) as Mount Lofty now sit just half a game out of the top four.Round 8 (21/12/19) fixtures are one-day matches (home team named first).....Kangarilla v MeadowsAldgate v BridgewaterFlagstaff Hill v StirlingMount Lofty has the bye

Strathalbyn ended Hahndorf’s undefeated start to the season and took over top spot on the ladder with a 26-run win at Strathalbyn during round nine action of the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). The Stallions batted first and were again led brilliantly by skipper Mark Abbott who scored his third century of the season as he hit a wonderful 111 from just 95 balls (17 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Abbott was involved in a 128-run third wicket stand with Jaspa Tonkin (34) which set the home side up for a very competitive total of 5/219 from their 45 overs. Hahndorf’s run chase began in steady fashion with veteran opener Greg Hassold (42) and skipper Kris Dawe (37) putting the Magpies in a good position at 4/108. Graydon Brand and Ryan Trafford-Walker then got together for a crucial 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket which lifted Hahndorf within 55 runs of victory before Brand was dismissed for 31 followed shortly after by Trafford-Walker for 41 as the Magpies collapsed, losing their last five wickets for just 38 runs with Jarrad Tait unable to bat due to injury. The Cobras were sent in on their home deck and they made a steady start with openers David Westrych (22) and Stewart Leigh (14) adding 39 for the first wicket. That was the end of the good news for Bremer-Callington though as Lobethal’s bowlers got well on top through James Elliott and Dave Huxter who combined for all 10 Cobras wickets. Elliott claimed his first five-wicket haul with the stunning figures of 6/18 (8), while Huxter snared 4/18 (7.3) as the home side was rolled for just 73 in the 26th over. The Tigers made hard work of the run chase as they slipped to 5/61 before knocking the runs off in the 17th over. Mitch Weeks (24) top scored with Daniel Norsworthy adding 19 not out at the end to see Lobethal home. Nathan Fitzgerald tried hard with the ball for the Cobras taking three wickets.Langhorne Creek consolidated its spot inside the top four with a five-wicket victory at Mount Barker on Saturday. He was well supported by Wayne Buckland with 33. Unfortunately for the ‘Burras, no one else made double figures and there were six ‘ducks’. Troy Blackwell bowled an excellent spell for Langhorne Creek taking 4/11 from his nine overs with only four of those runs coming off the bat! The reigning premier began their run chase well with David Mudge (26) and Nathan Wundersitz adding 44 for the first wicket before Mudge was dismissed. Port Elliot knock off reigning premier Noarlunga in the GSCA

17 December 2019, 1:00 AM

Port Elliot has handed reigning premier Noarlunga their first loss of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) season with a thrilling 12-run victory at Port Elliot Oval on Saturday. Port Elliot had posted a very competitive first day score of 6/205 and Noarlunga started their run chase in great fashion as skipper Jason Scarff and Anthony Burgess added 120 for the first wicket before Scarff was dismissed for 51. David Scarff (11), fresh off a century last round, then combined with Burgess (85) as the Shoes reached 1/149 to seemingly be in control of the match. The Bloods needed quick wickets and that’s exactly what they got as Simon Donaldson got on a roll to take 6/35 from 15 overs. It was Donaldson’s seventh five-wicket haul for Port Elliot and with his sixth wicket, he brought up 200 wickets for the club. Noarlunga lost their last nine wickets for just 44 runs to be bowled out for 193 in the 69th over. Riley Paull provided great support to Donaldson with the ball as he snared 2/38 from 16 overs. This left the Demons needing just two runs for outright victory which they achieved off just the second ball of the innings. Goolwa has consolidated their spot in the top four after a comprehensive outright win over Mount Compass by an innings and 77 runs at Burgess Oval. Mount Compass resumed day two at 4/17 in pursuit of Goolwa’s day one total of 7/223 declared and Goolwa wasted no time in rolling the Bulldogs for just 33 with Josh Jones snaring 5/9 from 13 overs. Hahndorf remain undefeated in Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket

10 December 2019, 11:00 PM

Hahndorf remain undefeated after a grinding 23-run victory over Langhorne Creek at Hahndorf Oval in round eight action of the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). Hahndorf batted first in the grand final rematch and it was opening batsman Andrew Baker who once again led from the front with his second half century of the campaign, compiling a fine 62 (7 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Skipper Kris Dawe (22) added 45 for the third wicket with Baker but at 4/74, Langhorne Creek held the advantage. Graydon Brand (31) then put on a 72-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Baker to lift the Magpies to 4/146. Four quick wickets fell thanks to fine bowling from Troy Blackwell (4/37), Brad Clements (4/42) and Brodie O’Dea (2/40) and a score of 200 looked doubtful before a cameo from Benny Montgomerie (33 not out from 25 balls) lifted Hahndorf to exactly 200 at the end of their 45 overs. Langhorne Creek began their run chase in steady fashion with Nathan Wundersitz (48) and O’Dea (11) adding 24 for the first wicket before a collapse of 4/14 left the reigning premier in trouble at 4/38. Ben McLeod (15) and Troy Blackwell (22) joined Wundersitz in trying to resurrect the innings and lower order contributions from Caleb Howell (18 not out), Daniel Kropp (17) and Clements (17) lifted the Tigers to a total of 177 before they were bowled out in the 44th over, 24 runs short of victory. Hahndorf used seven bowlers with six claiming wickets including Jarrad Tait (2/25), Brett Krieg (2/27), Kris Dawe (2/29) and Michael Shanahan (2/33).Lobethal have won their fourth game on the trot to sit just outside the top four after a convincing seven-wicket win over Wistow at Wistow Oval. Wistow batted first and struggled their way to 95 before being bowled out in the 39th over. Matt Martin was the pick of the Lobethal bowlers as he snared 3/27 (9). He was well supported by Ryan McEachern (2/12) and Dave Huxter (2/19) while Mitch Weeks was extremely miserly taking 1/8 from eight overs. Lobethal made light work of the run chase with skipper Ben Matthews (36) and Weeks (20) top scoring as the runs were knocked off in just 22 overs.Strathalbyn consolidated second position on the ladder with a thrilling one-wicket victory over Woodside at Woodside Oval. The home side batted first and it struggled throughout the innings with only Jimmy Kain (28 not out) and Tommy Baldock (25) passing 20 as the Warriors were bowled out in the 41st over for just 133. Matt Hein (4/25) was the star with the ball and he has now taken 14 wickets at an average of 9.14 this season. Brayden Gaiter (2/23) and Matt Abbott (2/24) also chimed in with wickets for the Stallions. Strathalbyn also struggled with the bat and apart from Luke Cousins (38) and Matt Abbott (41), no other Stallion passed 11 runs. At 7/72 it looked all over for Strathalbyn but Abbott was still there as the runs were slowly ticked off, but when Abbott was run-out, the game swung back in Woodside’s favour with the score at 8/108. Danny Horan (11 not out) came in and batted sensibly but when the ninth wicket fell, Strathalbyn were still 10 runs short of victory. Horan and Hein (2 not out) battled hard and got their side over the line with five balls to spare in a thriller. Shane Collins (2/14) and Dave Wescombe (2/17) were the multiple wicket takers for the Warriors who now sit precariously in fourth spot on the ladder, only net run rate ahead of Lobethal.Robert Crook’s maiden century has led Nairne to a crushing 113-run win over local rival Mount Barker at Nairne oval on Saturday. Crook opened the batting and peeled off 118 from 113 balls (11 x 4’s, 5 x 6’s) as the Razorbacks put up a sizeable score of 5/263 from their 45 overs. Handy contributions from skipper Luke Timmins (40), James Graves (28) and Richard Boscence (26) helped lift the home side to their highest score of the season. Jackson Lane (2/33) was the pick of the Kookaburras bowlers. It was always going to be a difficult run chase for Mount Barker and so it proved as they came up 113 runs short at 9/150 from their 45 overs. Chris Paterson (49) made his highest score of the season and he was supported by Deklan Porter (30) and Wayne Buckland (20 not out). The wickets were shared by five Nairne bowlers with Michael Harden (2/24), Sam Rowe (2/28) and Duncan Rogers (2/33) the chief destroyers as Nairne banked their third win of the 2019/20 season.Round 9 (14/12/19) fixtures (home sides named first)…..Strathalbyn v HahndorfMount Barker v Langhorne CreekWistow v NairneBremer-Callington v LobethalWoodside has the bye

Jones continued his good day collecting all four wickets on his way to the amazing figures of 4/4 from seven overs.Port Elliot has posted a competitive day one total of 6/205 against reigning premier Noarlunga on day one of their contest at Port Elliot. The total was set up by an excellent 87-run second wicket partnership between Brodie Whitbourne (50) and Hayden Gordge (33). Teenager Joel Harris continued the good work of that pair by making his highest ‘A’ grade score with a fine 65 not out. Skipper Jason Scarff was the best of the Shoes bowlers finishing with 3/65 (21 overs). Noarlunga never let the run rate get away from them and they’ll be confident of chasing the target down next week to keep their undefeated start to the season going.Willunga has already taken the first innings points over McLaren Districts and will push for their second outright of the season next week as the game concludes at Willunga. McLaren won the toss and decided to bat first and got off to a solid start reaching 23 before losing Daniel Bruce for 14. After three quick wickets, skipper Stephen Nairn (34) and opening batsman Ben Worrall (20) steadied the ship to see the Crushers to 3/66 before Worrall was unfortunately run out. That led to a collapse of 7/21 which saw the Crushers rolled for just 87 in the 43rd over. Luke Goldner led the way for the Demons with the ball taking the fine figures of 5/27 (14.5 overs). It was Goldner’s seventh five-wicket haul for Willunga. Mount Lofty finally taste victory in the Hills Cricket Association

10 December 2019, 1:30 AM

Mount Lofty won their first game of the season on Saturday after a thrilling two-wicket victory over Kangarilla in round six action of the Hills Cricket Association (HCA). Kangarilla won the toss and decided to bat first and Jono Makai (38) and Cam Venter (41) put the home side in a strong position after a 65-run partnership for the second wicket, before a string of wickets saw Kangarilla fall to 6/121. Brodie May (29) helped lift the total to a competitive 9/163 after 40 overs. Mount Lofty shared the wickets around with all seven bowlers getting in on the act. Will Healey was the only multiple wicket taker with 2/40 (8). The Redcaps run chase didn’t start well with none of the top four batsmen getting past 12. Kangarilla opening bowler Steve Featherstone was on fire claiming 3/27 (7). Enter Jason Matulick and along with Brad Hutton, this pair got Mount Lofty back on track with an excellent partnership before Hutton was run-out for 42 (39 balls). Matulick carried on to make 52 not out (56 balls) and he was helped out by Adam Carthew (29) to get his side close to the target. There was a mini collapse to send a bit of a fright through the Redcaps as Cole Davy took 4/13 from seven overs but they eventually passed the target in the 38th over.Meadows continued its undefeated start to 2019/20 with a convincing seven-wicket victory at home over Stirling. Meadows were without some key personnel including skipper Brad Dawe and opening bowler Chad Dawe, but it didn’t matter as they chased down Stirling’s score of 6/171 in the 35th over. Earlier, Stirling won the toss and decided to bat and they had plenty of contributors without anyone going on to a big score. Jack Pick (39), Kosta Sinodinos (30 not out), Pete Fryer (30), Daniel Gonzalez (25) and Fergus Southon (22) all got starts for the Eagles. Brad Louch was the pick of the Bulldogs’ bowlers finishing with 2/26 from his eight overs. Flagstaff Hill were missing skipper Kyle Petty and after winning the toss and deciding to bat first, the Falcons were in desperate trouble at 6/40. Veteran Luke Hoyle was the chief destroyer for the Raiders with the fine figures of 4/20 from 6.2 overs. Bridgewater took their time at the start of the run chase with Charlie Birnie (28) and Kieran McCaw (32 not out) adding 60 for the first wicket before Justin Summerill smashed 35 not out (5 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) to reach the target in the 28th over.Round 7 (14/12/19) fixtures are one-day matches (home team named first).....Meadows v AldgateKangarilla v StirlingMt Lofty v BridgewaterFlagstaff Hill has the bye

Tough day for Southern Districts 'A' grade
Tough day for Southern Districts 'A' grade

09 December 2019, 7:30 PM

It was a tough day at the office for Southern Districts’ Men’s ‘A’ grade on Saturday as round seven action in the SACA Premier Cricket competition got underway. The Stingrays came into the game in seventh spot on the ladder and travelled to Glandore Oval to face the third placed Adelaide. Southern Districts won the toss and elected to bat first but that’s where the good news ended as the Stingrays were routed for just 52 in the 19th over. Only Shaun Tanner (15 not out) and Josh Barrett (15) reached double figures. For Adelaide Cam Valente was magnificent as he took 7/24 from 9.5 overs. He was well supported by Ben Pengelley (3/27). Adelaide went on the attack with the bat with Ben Pengelley (65), Patrick Page Jnr (47) and Valente (40) all getting starts as the home side was bowled out for 209 in just 39.3 overs. Lewis Hatchett bowled a heroic spell for the Stingrays to finish with 7/80 from 15 overs. Adelaide held a very handy 157-run lead as Southern Districts came out to bat for the second time on day one with 33 overs remaining until stumps. It was another poor start for the Stingrays as both openers were dismissed and the score sat at 2/14. Adelaide could sense an improbable day one outright win but Ben Cox (51 not out) and Brendan McCormack (49 not out) dug in and saw the Stingrays through to 2/119 at stumps, still trailing by 38 runs. With some good batting in the first half of next Saturday’s second days play, Southern Districts will be hoping to get a lead of 150+ and maybe have an outside chance of an outright victory themselves. Adelaide will be looking for quick wickets and take the maximum points on offer leading into the Christmas break.

With the test match bye out of the way, Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) competition resumes tomorrow when round eight gets underway. The match of the round sees a re-match of last seasons grand final between Hahndorf and Langhorne Creek at Hahndorf Oval. Hahndorf are currently undefeated and sit on top of the ladder while the reigning premier Langhorne Creek are in third spot with a 5-1 win-loss record. Hahndorf has very strong bowling stocks with Jarrad Tait (15 wickets), Benny Montgomerie (14) and Caleb Blesing (9) sitting inside the top 10 on the AEHCA wicket takers list this season. Veteran opening batsman Andrew Baker has been ultra consistent with the bat and has scored 239 runs at an average of 39.50. Langhorne Creek has struggled to get a settled lineup so to be sitting in third spot has been an excellent effort. Nathan Wundersitz leads the way with the bat having scored 137 runs at 27.40 while despite only playing three matches, Ben Warren has taken eight wickets at the miserly average of just 8.50.There’s the prospect of another cracking top four match when Woodside (fourth) take on Strathalbyn (second) at Woodside Oval. Strathalbyn has been in great form with their only loss coming back in round five to Nairne. Skipper Mark Abbott has led from the front with 277 runs at an average of 69.25, including two centuries. He’s been well supported by Luke Cousins who has scored 184 runs at 36.80. Strathalbyn have a very good and varied bowling attack led by Matt Abbott (12 wickets), Brayden Gaiter (12) and Matt Hein (10), who all sit inside the top 10 on the AEHCA wicket takers list. Woodside has been a little bit inconsistent as their 4-3 record would suggest but their best is definitely good enough to threaten the top sides. Veteran Dave Wescombe has led the way for the Warriors with the bat, scoring 235 runs at 39.17 while recruit Will Worthington has been very consistent with 168 runs at an average of 42.00. Dale Robinson leads the association bowling with 15 wickets at 11.13 and he’s been well supported by Chris Baschiera with 10 wickets.Local rivals Nairne and Mount Barker clash at Nairne Oval with the winner keeping their finals chances alive while the loser will struggle to make the major round. Both sides have a 2-4 win-loss record and sit two games outside the top four. New Nairne skipper Luke Timmins (202 runs) and veteran Richard Boscence (162 runs) have led the way with the bat to sit inside the top 10 run scorers in the association. Teenager Duncan Rogers, in his first season of ‘A’ grade, leads the Razorbacks bowling with seven wickets. Simon Turk has been an excellent recruit for the Kookaburras and leads the way with both bat (194 runs) and ball (seven wickets). Turk joined Mount Barker from Riverland club Renmark North this season. Wistow will host an improving Lobethal outfit on the hill at Wistow. The Echidnas are yet to taste victory in season 2019/20 while the Tigers have hit their straps lately winning three games on the trot. Lobethal has been best served by Mitchell Weeks (140 runs) and skipper Ben Matthews (137 runs) in the batting stakes while Matt Martin has been excellent with the ball snaring 10 wickets at an average of just 13.90. It’s been tough going for a young Wistow side but they are well led by skipper Daniel Jenner who sits inside the top five run scorers in the AEHCA with 220 runs at an average of 36.67 while youngster Lachlan Elsworthy continues to improve with the ball and has taken nine wickets so far this season.Bremer-Callington has the bye tomorrow and currently sit in eighth position with a 1-6 win-loss record. They have suffered through injury and player unavailability so far in 2019/20 but they hope to be more settled from now on. The Cobras have been well led by skipper Johnny Fitzgerald (159 runs) and Arsalan Eubaid (140 runs) while Mitchell Crisp leads the way with the ball with nine wickets.

Reigning premier Aldgate has moved into third spot on the Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ladder after a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Mount Lofty at Heathfield Oval. Aldgate resumed day two at 1/13 in pursuit of Mount Lofty’s meagre first innings total of 72. Mitch Thomas (42) and skipper Jake Turnbull (15) added 55 for the second wicket to take the Gaters within sight of victory then Frank Clements (38 from 42 balls) made short work of the rest of the chase as Aldgate declared at the tea break on 4/130, an overall lead of 58 runs. There was still 38 overs left in the day and Aldgate were keen to push for an outright win. Mount Lofty held firm through Brett Hill (14 not out) and Nick Justice (4 not out) as the Redcaps finished at 0/18 from 24 overs when Stumps were called early. Aldgate has the bye in round seven while winless Mount Lofty head south to take on the second-placed Kangarilla outfit.Meadows continued their undefeated start to the season with a comfortable 127-run win at Flagstaff Hill on Saturday. Meadows were defending their day one total of 318 and they were made to work hard at the start as Matt Emes (28) and Will Goulding (63) added 69 for the first wicket. Skipper Kyle Petty made 16 to lift the home side to 1/95 before a string of wickets saw the Falcons collapse to 6/137. Stephen Wheatland (41) and Ross Mummery (18) then added 44 runs for the seventh wicket before the last four wickets fell for just  10 runs as they were bowled out for 191 in 52 overs. Anthony Hughes bowled a marathon spell of 20 overs to take 4/77 while Callan Blackwell cleaned up the tail with the average enhancing figures of 3/2. Meadows will host Stirling in the next round while Flagstaff Hill travel to Bridgewater to take on the Raiders.Kangarilla moved into second spot on the ladder after a five-wicket win over Bridgewater at Bridgewater Oval. Resuming day two at 1/53 in pursuit of Bridgewater’s day one total of 106, Kangarilla wasted no time in knocking off the target with Jono Makai (34) and skipper Che Martinsen (19 not out) top scoring for the visitors. Makai hit four sixes and a boundary in his quickfire innings. Adam Eckermann with 4/35 (12) was the leading bowler for Bridgewater. Kangarilla have won three of their four matches this season with their only loss being to the undefeated Meadows. Bridgewater sit in fifth spot with just the one win for the season so far.

Double delight for Stingrays Women
Double delight for Stingrays Women

Southern Districts’ Women cricketers had a day to remember on Saturday winning both the first and second grade SACA Twenty20 premierships. The first grade proved too strong for Kensington winning by 22 runs on the back of a player of the match performance from playing-coach Hannah Sampson who made 52 from 51 balls and then backed it up with the incredible figures of 3/5 from her four overs. It was a great turnaround for Southern Districts as they had lost both minor round games to Kensington earlier in the season. The second grade completed an undefeated season as they comprehensively defeated Glenelg by seven wickets after an amazing bowling display from player of the match Febi Mansell who took the scarcely believable figures of 6/5 from her four overs! In the first grade, The Stingrays batted first and got off to a flyer taking 23 from the first two overs before four quick wickets fell to leave them in trouble at 4/47 in the ninth over. Sampson was going strong and she was joined by Rachel Andrew (25 from 26 balls) in a crucial 48-run fifth wicket stand before Andrew was dismissed. Sampson continued on to bring up her half century and Kylie Rattray made a very important 23 not out (15 balls) to lift the total to 6/128 from the 20 overs. Eliza Doddridge was the pick of the Browns bowlers snaring 3/6 (4). The Stingrays came out fired up in the field as Sampson removed the first three Kensington batters and when Shae Daly was dismissed without scoring by Kelly Armstrong (1/26), the reigning champs were on the ropes at 4/38 in the 10th over. Katelyn Pope (33 not out) and Sarah Lowe (32) added 58 for the fifth wicket to get the equation down to 34 required from 24 balls. Two run-outs and a wicket to skipper Jess O’Reilly snuffed out any chance Kensington may have had as they finished on 7/106. It was a particularly memorable day for O’Reilly and Narelle Maiolo who were both foundation players for the Stingrays as under 13’s back in 2005/06. It was Southern Districts’ first ‘A’ grade flag since 2012/13. The second grade dominated Glenelg from the start reducing the Seahorses to 9/14 after nine overs. Febi Mansell (6/5) was the star with the ball removing former Stingrays Nicole Adams and Kate Weger within three balls (both LBW). Mansell then took a further four wickets in her next over as the procession of Glenelg wickets continued with Keely Stone (3/8 from 4 overs) getting in on the act. Akshaya Anandan (13 not out) and Kate Andrews (4 from 41 balls) hung tough for nine overs to get Glenelg to a score of 36 as they were bowled out in the 19th over. Southern Districts started their innings needing just 37 to win but in the back of their mind lurked the thought of the previous week’s game when Glenelg had bowled them out for just 33! However despite losing three wickets, the runs were knocked off in the 11th over with Mansell continuing her great day with 13 not out. It was the Stingrays second grade’s second consecutive premiership after winning the 40-over competition in 2018/19. So an amazing Twenty20 campaign comes to an end for the Stingrays in the best possible way. Back to ‘reality’ this Sunday for the second grade as they host Adelaide University at Bice Oval from 1.00pm. The first grade can keep celebrating as they have the bye!

Stingrays Women looking for Twenty20 glory
Stingrays Women looking for Twenty20 glory

28 November 2019, 7:30 PM

Women’s Cricket takes centre stage tomorrow at Karen Rolton Oval and Park 25 as the Southern Districts Stingrays chase Twenty20 premiership glory with both the first and second grade sides in grand final action. The first grade will take on Kensington at Karen Rolton Oval while the second grade will face Glenelg at Park 25 (Oval 2). Both games start at 10.30am.The Stingrays first grade will be in for a tough encounter against perennial powerhouse Kensington who have won four of the past five Twenty20 premierships. During the minor round Kensington won both encounters, by 72 runs in round two and then by just 16 runs in round seven. The Stingrays will look to the competition’s leading wicket taker, leg-spinner Kelly Armstrong, to restrict a powerful Kensington batting line-up. Armstrong has taken the most wickets in the competition with 15 and has gone at just 4.04 runs per over. Playing-coach, Hannah Sampson, has also been very miserly with the ball taking seven wickets this season with an economy rate of just 3.69 runs per over. Kensington has great depth in their bowling stocks with Shae Daly, Eliza Doddridge, Sarah Lowe and Katelyn Pope combining for 37 wickets in the minor round. The Stingrays have some real firepower with the bat with 16 year old Ella Wilson and Kylie Rattray. Wilson has a strike rate of 112.9 and Rattray 109.4, two of the highest strike rates in the competition. Kensington also have some damaging batters including Doddridge (198 runs) and Lowe (145 runs) who both sit inside the top five run scorers for 2019/20. It should be a cracking contest between two very even teams.Southern Districts’ second grade have had a fantastic Twenty20 campaign, completing the minor round undefeated. They will face off against Glenelg who they defeated by five wickets back in mid-October. Both sides have strong bowling with two bowlers each inside the top five wicket takers in the competition. Lucy Bowering (nine wickets) and Mikayla Mark (seven) lead the way for Glenelg while Keely Stone and Alecia Holt both have eight wickets for Southern Districts. Holt’s eight wickets have come at the incredible average of just 4.25 while conceding a miserly 1.70 runs per over! Glenelg may have a slight edge in batting with Nicole Adams leading the competition with 168 runs at a strike rate of over 100. It shapes as a very close contest.“Our strength is in our squad depth and the group has worked hard in the pre-season and played some good, consistent cricket throughout both Twenty20 competitions,” said Stingrays playing-coach Hannah Sampson. “Both teams deserve the opportunity to compete for the first and second grade Twenty20 titles. Whatever happens tomorrow, I’m extremely proud of the playing group.”It’s a great opportunity to watch some quality Cricket so get along to Karen Rolton Oval and Park 25 tomorrow from 10.30am!
