Nick Scanlan was best on ground for Willunga and he was ably supported by Bradley Haskett, Sean Beath, Braden Altus and Danny Irvine. It was a tough day for the home side with no multiple goalkickers. Sam Haniford, Will Zimmermann, Peter Hoban, Brent Creek and Tim Green battled hard for the Bulldogs.Reigning premier Langhorne Creek began their quest for a third successive flag with a tough 24-point win at Encounter Bay. Goal-sneak Lachy McGregor snagged four majors while Coby Helyar kicked three and Caleb Howell two. Tom Neville, Tyson Neale and Nick Marshall kicked two goals each for Encounter Bay. 10 July 2020, 8:30 AM

After a three month wait, round one of the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) is finally on tomorrow (11 July) with all 10 clubs set to compete for the flag. Yankalilla had originally decided not to participate in the 2020 season but thankfully they reversed that decision, enabling the Tigers to now be part of a shortened nine-round season. Reigning premier Langhorne Creek will be looking for a third consecutive premiership this season, now under the guidance of playing-coach James Sellar. Last year’s other finalists in Willunga, Mount Compass, McLaren and Victor Harbor will look to push the Hawks all the way and knock them off their perch. All teams that missed major round action last year have made significant changes with former North Melbourne and Port Adelaide forward Lindsay Thomas to coach Yankalilla, 2010 premiership coach Peter Simmons returns to Strathalbyn while Todd Miles will lead Goolwa/Port Elliot after a successful SANFL career and premiership success at Barossa Districts. Myponga-Sellicks also have a new coach in Rod Mitchell who had plenty of success at Flagstaff Hill while Scott Wendelborn is the new man in charge at Encounter Bay.You can follow the GSFL via live streaming on the Fleurieu App by accessing the Watch GSFL button on the App home page. Meadows has hit the ground running with a hard fought 10-point win over local rival Macclesfield in round one action of the Hills Football League (HFL) Country Division. Playing at home, Macclesfield were favourites and they started well to lead by 15 points at the first break. The visiting Meadows combination fought back in the second term to reduce the margin to just seven points at half time. The Bulldogs came out all fired up in the all-important third quarter as they slammed on 6.5 to 2.4 to take a handy 19-point lead into the final term. Despite keeping Meadows to just a solitary behind in the final stanza, Maccy could only manage one goal themselves as they went down 8.12 (60) to 10.10 (70). Karoonda recruit, Daniel Stock led the way with five goals for the victors while Luke Andruszkiewicz slotted three majors for Macclesfield. Andrew Coombe, Luke Watson, Braeden Bezzina, Luke Smart and Mathew Beinke were named as best players for Meadows while Andruszkiewicz, Riley Daykin, Carey McLeod, Jack Clark and Isaac Lallard were the best performers for Macclesfield.Kangarilla also pulled off an upset victory with a comfortable 34-point win at home against Bridgewater-Callington. The win was set up by an excellent first half as the Double Blues led 10.4 (64) to 6.3 (39) at the long break. The Raiders won the third term to give themselves a sniff at three quarter time as they trailed by a manageable 20 points. Kangarilla steadied to kick three goals to one in the final term to win 16.11 (107) to 11.7 (73). On his return to Kangarilla from Victor Harbor, Michael Ross was best on ground with four goals. Thomas Hall and Jamie Grosser were the other multiple goal kickers for Kangies with three majors each. Alistair Fleming kicked three goals for the Raiders while Zac Hean was named their best player.Ironbank-Cherry Gardens made the long trip to Birdwood where they recorded a solid 31-point victory over the Roosters. Birdwood got off to a good start to hold a 16-point lead at the first change. The visitors did all the attacking in the second quarter as they took the lead at half time by two points but it could have been much more as they were very inaccurate with 3.7 for the term. That dominance continued in the second half with Ironbank-Cherry Gardens kicking seven goals to two to eventually win 10.17 (77) to 6.10 (46). Best players for the Thunderers were Todd Pfeiffer, Joel van Paridon and Daniel Desengo while the goals were shared around with two each to Josh Vandermeer, Jeremy Johncock, Elijah Ware and Matthew Raitt. From that point on it was all Gumeracha as they kicked 12 goals to five for the final three quarters to win 13.11 (89) to 9.6 (60). The returning Scott Mumford provided a good target up forward as he kicked five majors for the Magpies. Mumford last played for Gumeracha in 2017 when he kicked 83 goals. Danny Leith, Charlie Graeber, Mumford, Braeden Hutt, Matthew Redden and Matthew Marsden were good contributors for the reigning premier. Hills Football League - Round 1 preview
Hills Football League - Round 1 preview

03 July 2020, 1:30 AM

After what seemed like an eternity...Footy is finally back! The Hills Football League (HFL) kicks off tomorrow with four games in both Division 1 and Country Division (Division 2). I will bring you news from the Country Division throughout season 2020 where Kangarilla, Meadows and Macclesfield ‘represent’ the Fleurieu. There are nine teams competing in a location-diverse Country Division in 2020. They are Gumeracha, Kersbrook, Birdwood, Torrens Valley, Ironbank-Cherry Gardens, Bridgewater-Callington, Macclesfield, Meadows and Kangarilla. It will be more important than ever to post some early wins in 2020 with just eight games being played in the minor round. Round one throws up some very interesting games with a Grand Final rematch between Gumeracha and Kersbrook being played at Gumeracha Oval. The Magpies were the surprise packet of the competition in 2019 as they stormed to a first ‘A’ grade title since 1984. Kersbrook are always around the mark and I expect they will be again under the expert tutelage of long-time coach Brett James. Macclesfield host Meadows in the ‘Southern Derby’ where the home side will start as favourites after a promising 2019 campaign saw them make it to the second week of finals. Meadows has been very busy in the off-season landing 17 new recruits which will hopefully help the Bulldogs back to finals action. Kangarilla will look to improve on their five-win 2019 effort as they host Bridgewater-Callington. The Raiders were slightly disappointing last season after being bundled out in the Elimination Final by Macclesfield and will hope to progress much further this season. Birdwood face off against Ironbank-Cherry Gardens and the Roosters will have a vastly different lineup from last season with more than 10 players moving on. Ironbank-Cherry Gardens made it to the Preliminary Final last season before falling to Kersbrook The 2018 premier will hope to get back to the last game of the season in 2020. Bring on the Footy!!!Round 1 (home team named first)Gumeracha v KersbrookMacclesfield v MeadowsKangarilla v Bridgewater-CallingtonBirdwood v Ironbank-Cherry GardensTorrens Valley has the bye

Coach appointments at Southern Districts Cricket Club
Coach appointments at Southern Districts Cricket Club

16 June 2020, 10:30 PM

Despite the wet and cold weather, Cricket decisions are already being made for next season. In good news for the game in the southern area, the Southern Districts Cricket Club have re-appointed Carl Hooper and Hannah Sampson as head coaches of the Men’s and Women’s programs respectively. Last season the Stingrays Women did the ‘double’ in the SACA Twenty20 competitions with both the first and second grade winning premierships. In the longer form of the game the second grade finished as minor premier but were unable to play finals due to the COVID-19 restrictions. However, as they had finished on top of the ladder at the end of the minor round, they were awarded the premiership. The first grade struggled at the start of their 50-over campaign before finishing the season well to just miss out on a finals berth. The Stingrays Women have many good juniors with Ella Wilson, Callie Wilson, Gemma Kennedy and Amy Peterson all good chances to be included in the under age state programs again as they were last season. Other players to watch include Annabelle Yelland, Keely Stone and Kelly Armstrong.  Yelland joined the Stingrays late last season and is relatively new to the game. Coach Hannah Sampson expects her skills to go “through the roof” with regular games. It will be Stone’s third season of cricket and Sampson says, “she’s improved out of sight and will be pushing for a consistent first grade spot. She’s a great kid and very coachable.” According to Sampson, Armstrong was “unlucky not to be considered for a state contract after taking 35 wickets last season. She has one of the best ‘wrong-uns’ in the state and she will be looking to put in another big season for us.” The Stingrays have also gained the services of young all-rounder Shania McKinnon from Kensington who Sampson is looking forward to working with. “We have a lot of players pushing for first grade positions so it should make for good competition for spots,” said Sampson. Pre-season starts in August so anyone interested in playing for us is welcome to contact me or the club. We are the premier cricket club for the south!”Former West Indies international Carl Hooper made an immediate impact on the Men’s program as the first grade rose from 11th position in 2018/19 to fifth in 2019/20. The other three senior grades all won more games and finished higher on the ladder than in the 2018/19 season as well with hopefully more depth and improvement to come. The Stingrays recruited well with the returning Lewis Hatchett taking 32 wickets in first grade competition to finish equal second on the SACA wicket-taking list. Sunam Gautam was also a key recruit and he made an excellent contribution with 305 runs and 19 wickets to be one of the leading all-rounders in the competition. Skipper Josh Barrett led the way with the bat making 581 runs at an average of 52.82 including a match-winning knock of 182 not out against Port Adelaide. He was well supported by veteran Brendan McCormack who made 520 runs at 40.The Stingrays are always on the lookout for new players so if you’re interested in playing in season 2020/21, please get in touch with the club. Their website is http://southern_stingrays.sa.cricket.com.au/ and their Facebook page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/Southern-District-Stingrays-168794203135228/
