09 March 2020, 7:30 PM

Willunga tuned up for the finals with their 11th consecutive victory after a 52-run win over reigning premier Noarlunga during round 12 action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). Willunga had posted a very competitive total of 7/225 on day one and would’ve been confident of defending it but Noarlunga skipper Jason Scarff had other ideas as he notched his sixth century for the Shoes since they moved to the GSCA in 2014/15. Scarff made 101 and at one stage Noarlunga were in a strong position at 4/164 before losing their last 6/9 to be bowled out for 173 in the 64th over. Sean McIvor did the damage for Willunga with his second five-wicket haul for the Demons, taking 6/40 from 19 overs. Willunga will take on Goolwa in the Qualifying Final this weekend with the winner going straight through to the Grand Final. Noarlunga will travel to Rapid Bay to face Port Elliot in the Elimination Final.Port Elliot will enter the finals full of confidence after winning their sixth game from their past seven with a comfortable 120-run win over McLaren Districts. Port Elliot made 7/288 on day one and this proved too much for the Crushers as they were bowled out for 168 in the 62nd over. It looked like it was going to be an early finish as McLaren Districts fell to 5/35 before Stephen Nairn dug in to make 73 to at least make the Bloods work for their victory. Teenager Harrison Grenfell took his best ‘A’ grade figures with 4/25 (12) and he was well supported by Josh Gordge, in his first ‘A’ grade match this season, who took 3/37 (9.3).Goolwa wrapped up second spot after a relatively comfortable five-wicket win over Encounter Bay. Goolwa started day two on 0/29 in pursuit of Encounter Bays’ first innings of just 83. The Magpies stumbled to 5/71 after openers Jesse Le Ray (24) and Luke Giddings (18) had added 45 for the first wicket. Strathalbyn has wrapped up the minor premiership after a thrilling one-wicket win over Woodside at Strathalbyn Oval during round 17 action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). Woodside batted first and struggled throughout their innings before being bowled out in the 41st over for 135. Dave Wescombe was the only shining light for the Warriors as he made 66 (72 balls). Wescombe has had another excellent season with 557 runs at an average of 46.42. Five Strathalbyn bowlers took wickets with Brayden Gaiter the chief destroyer taking 4/23 (7). Gaiter now has 29 wickets for the season to sit alongside teammate Matt Hein at the top of the AEHCA wicket taker list. The Stallions struggled in the run chase with Luke Cousins the only top six batsman to reach double figures as he notched his second half century of the campaign with a fine innings of 56 (69 balls). His dismissal with the score at 5/83 left the home side in danger of a shock loss but Ben Cousins (24 not out) was digging in as he looked to bring the Stallions home. When the ninth wicket fell with scores level, Hein made his way to the crease to hit the winning runs with a ball to spare. The loss put paid to Woodside’s slim finals hopes while Strathalbyn will face Hahndorf in the final round in what is a possible semi-final preview.Lobethal continued their brilliant form with a comprehensive 72-run win over Wistow at Lobethal Oval. The Tigers batted first and were led by skipper Ben Matthews who brought up his fourth ‘A’ grade century with an unbeaten 101 (151 balls). Matthews was involved in an 87-run second wicket partnership with Daniel Norsworthy (40) which set the home side up to post 6/205 from their 45 overs. Wistow were never in the hunt during the run chase as they were bowled out for 133 in the 39th over. Matt Jenkin destroyed the Echidnas batting lineup with career best figures of 6/21 (5.1). Lobethal sit third going into the last round and will need to win and hope Hahndorf lose to Strathalbyn to grab the all important second spot and the double chance.Nairne won their sixth game of the season with a tough 23-run win at Mount Barker. Nairne batted first and it was a solid effort all round with Robert Crook again leading the way with 51 (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6). He was supported by Chad Harrop (29), Mitch Hein (26) and skipper Luke Timmins (26) as the Razorbacks posted a competitive total of 197. Hayden Lane (4/37) and Craig Paech (4/46) led the way with the ball for the Kookaburras. Mount Barker lost both openers and were in early trouble at 2/33 before returning skipper Rhys Paterson (48) and Simon Turk (46) added 89 runs for the third wicket to put the home side in a strong position at 2/122. However once Paterson and Turk were dismissed, there was a steady flow of wickets with the innings finishing on 8/174. Sam Rowe (4/46) took his best figures of the season while Jacob Sadler (2/47) was the other multiple wicket taker.Hahndorf consolidated second spot on the AEHCA ladder with a five-wicket win over Langhorne Creek in the Grand Final rematch at Langhorne Creek Oval. The home side batted first and were always under pressure from a tight Magpies attack. Brodie O’Dea (35), Shannon Jones (33) and Nathan Wundersitz (21) all got starts but no Tigers batsman went on to make the big score required as they were bowled out for 150 in the 44th over. Caleb Blesing continued his good recent form to take 3/24 (9) and skipper Kris Dawe provided great support with 3/33 (8.5). Hahndorf were aggressive in their run chase as veteran Andrew Baker (72) made his third half century of the season. Baker was involved in a 76-run second wicket stand with Graydon Brand (37) which set up the win as the runs were knocked off in the 32nd over. Port Elliot close to ending 5-year finals drought in GSCA

02 March 2020, 10:30 PM

Port Elliot has put themselves in an excellent position to play finals for the first time since 2014/15 after posting an imposing day one total of 7/288 against McLaren Districts at McLaren Vale Sporting Complex. The visitors won the toss and were in early trouble as they slipped to 3/39 as skipper Jesse Consalvo, fresh off a century last round, came in to join Brodie Whitbourne. This pair added 107 runs for the fourth wicket before Consalvo was dismissed for 73 from just 72 balls. Whitbourne went on to score 43 before former Ashbourne player Ben Griffiths made 73 not out from 87 balls (5 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). Griffiths has been a very handy pick up for the Bloods as he has made 318 runs and taken 13 wickets so far this season. Liam Harris added 31 as Port Elliot rounded out a good day with their highest score in 2019/20. Stephen Nairn (3/85) and David Smith (2/63) battled hard all day with the ball for the Crushers. Willunga posted a competitive total of 7/225 in the Grand Final rematch at Noarlunga. Luke Goldner (34), Scott Brown (31) and George Catsiavas (25) all made handy contributions for the visitors. For the Shoes, Sam Trapolino took 4/46 (19), his best figures of the season. It should be an intriguing second day between two of the best sides in the competition.Goolwa are well positioned to secure the all important double chance after a dominant display on day one of their game at Encounter Bay. Encounter Bay has to win and hope other results go their way to play finals but after being sent in by the Magpies, they were rolled for just 83 in 51 overs. No batsman reached 15 with Sam Hoffmann and Cam Lintern each making 14. Teenager Brody Vincent was the star for Goolwa as he registered his best ‘A’ grade figures with 4/7 from seven overs. He was well supported by Jayden Crees with 3/27 (19). In reply Goolwa safely negotiated 19 overs to finish on 0/29 with Jesse Le Ray (15 not out) and Luke Giddings (13 not out) set to resume on day two.Mount Compass are in an excellent position to register their second win of 2019/20 and end their season on a high note after a good bowling performance on day one of their match at Burgess Oval. After posting a moderate total of 128, Mount Compass hit back hard with the ball to leave Myponga reeling on 7/41 at stumps. Aaron Dalitz had a day out for the Bulls as he top scored with 54 and then finished his day with 3/20 from 12 overs. Dalitz was well supported by Robert Martin who claimed 3/17 (11). Earlier, James Patterson put Myponga in a good position as he snared his second five-wicket haul in three games to finish with the excellent figures of 5/22 from 15 overs. Matty Hansen was the chief destroyer for the home side as he snared his second five-wicket haul for the season, finishing with 5/22 (7.3). Hansen now has 25 wickets for the season. Aldgate started their run chase in shaky fashion as they slipped to 2/8 with both openers back in the shed. Reigning premier Langhorne Creek win a thriller in AEHCA

25 February 2020, 9:00 PM

Langhorne Creek has gone a long way towards booking their spot in the finals after a nail-biting four-run win over a brave Woodside outfit at Woodside Oval in round 16 action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). Langhorne Creek batted first and piled on the runs through an excellent second-wicket partnership between Brodie O’Dea and Nathan Wundersitz worth 170 runs. O’Dea, from Northern Areas club Pekina/Carrieton, has proved a very handy recruit and he made every post a winner on Saturday as he scored his maiden ton for the Tigers. O’Dea made 121 not out from 116 balls (13 x 4’s, 4 x 6’s) and Wundersitz chimed in with 79 from 118 balls (9 x 4’s) as the reigning premier put an imposing 2/237 on the board from their 45 overs. The Warriors began their run chase well as Tommy Baldock (28) and Dave Wescombe (75) added 104 for the first wicket. Wescombe was in fine touch as he hit nine boundaries and three maximums. Sam Luck (53) and skipper Brad Collins (20) joined in the fun as they added 74 for the third wicket to put the home side in the box seat at 2/192. Enter O’Dea with the ball as he snared 4/33 (9) as Woodside lost 7/29 before ultimately finishing on 9/233 at the end of their 45 overs to hand the reigning premier a very important victory.Hahndorf kept a grip on second spot on the AEHCA ladder and put paid to Nairne’s slim finals hopes with a solid 68-run victory at Hahndorf Oval. The Magpies batted first and got off to a good start thanks to a 50-run opening stand between Greg Hassold (44) and Andrew Baker (14). Chad Harrop (2/28) and Sam Rowe (2/38) were the multiple wicket takers for the Razorbacks. Robert Crook (34) and Rowe (24) got Nairne off to a good start but after that it was all Hahndorf, apart from Mitch Hein who made 23, with the Razorbacks bowled out in the 37th over for just 122. Huxtable continued his fine match taking the excellent figures of 3/8 (4) and he was well supported by teenager Bradey Judd, in just his fourth ‘A’ grade game, who snared 3/25 from his nine overs.Lobethal continued their amazing run of form as they comprehensively defeated Mount Barker by seven wickets at Lobethal Oval. All three finals were tight affairs with all three sides batting first winning. In the under 21’s at Lenswood Oval, Torrens Valley came ‘back from the dead’ to defeat Hills for the second year in a row, this time by just 18 runs. Hills appeared to be cruising to victory as they made their way to 4/137 in pursuit of TVCA’s innings of 167 until they suffered a dramatic collapse to lose their last 6/12 to be bowled out for 149 in the 37th over. Brayden Coulthard (4/19) and Angus Shapley (3/27) were the stars with the ball for Torrens Valley. Liam Winskill (62 not out) batted beautifully for Hills but was left stranded at the end while Hills skipper Josh Callaghan chimed in with 37 before being run out. TVCA skipper Jack Druwitt top scored with 37 (28 balls) with opening batsmen James Nyvit (36) and Jack Roesler (24) providing excellent support. 167 didn’t seem enough for Torrens Valley to go back-to-back but they never gave up and pulled off an incredible win.Great Southern defeated Murray Towns by 25 runs to win the under 15’s at Burgess Oval in Mount Compass. GSCA batted first and managed to fight their way to a total of 128 before being bowled out in the 40th over. Murray Towns began their run chase shakily as they fell to 3/26 before Max Loller (26), Chad Reschke (21) and Towill (17) got their side back into the game. Fine bowling from Endersby (4/9) and Finn Magor (4/9) proved too much for Murray Towns in the end as they were bowled out in the 43rd over for 103 to give Great Southern a well deserved title.Hills won their second under 13’s title in a row after a hard fought 15-run victory over Alexandra & Eastern Hills at Meadows Oval. Jack Kranz (4/26) and Noah Dunn (3/17) were the chief destroyers for Alexandra & Eastern Hills. The AEHCA run chase started badly as they slumped to 5/36 before Connor Burgess (22) and Levi Llewellyn (15) added 43 for the sixth wicket to get their team right back in the hunt. However once these two were dismissed, the end came quickly with the last five wickets falling for just 15 runs as AEHCA were bowled out in the 39th over for 94. It was another day of mixed results for the Southern Districts women in the SACA Premier Cricket competition on Sunday with a win to the second grade and a loss to the first grade. The first grade were at home taking on Sturt and after winning the toss decided to bat first. Sadly only skipper Jess O’Reilly (14) reached double figures as the home side were bowled out for just 62 in the 29th over with Extras (17) the top score. Brooke Harris, with her second five-wicket haul of the season, did the damage for Sturt with the excellent figures of 6/14 (7.3). She was well supported by Alex Price (4/14). Sturt were relatively untroubled in the run chase as they brought up the winning runs in the 16th over for the loss of just three wickets with Annie O’Neil top scoring with 25. Kelly Armstrong continued her excellent season for the Stingrays as she snared 3/13 (5.1). Armstrong now has 29 wickets in all competitions this season. It was a far different story for the Stingrays second grade as they banked their seventh win of the season to consolidate top spot on the ladder with a 45-run victory over Sturt at Price Memorial Oval. The visitors batted first with the innings set up by a patient innings of 48 (113 balls) from Cara Allen. Solid contributions from Rachael Greenshields (13), Kendall Howell (12) and Jess Modistach (12) lifted Southern Districts to 6/112 from their 40 overs. Melanie Smith (2/10) and Brigitte McGuire (2/26) were the multiple wicket takers for the Blues. Sturt were never in the hunt during their run chase with extras (21) the top score and only Angela Mourtzios (12 not out) reaching double figures. Five Stingrays bowlers took wickets with Howell (4/10) and Keely Stone (3/12) doing most of the damage. Woodside has moved back inside the top four with a comprehensive nine-wicket victory at Mount Barker during round 15 action in the Alexandra & Eastern HIlls Cricket Association (AEHCA). The home side batted first and were in a strong position at 2/78 thanks to good contributions from Chris Paterson (45) and Craig Paech (20). Sadly for the Kookaburras their innings took a turn for the worse as they lost 8/26 to be bowled out for 104 in the 30th over. Sam Luck was the star with the ball for Woodside as he took the last five wickets of the innings to secure career best figures of 5/11 from 4.4 overs. Luck was well supported by teenager Charlie McDonough who took 3/27 (6). The Warriors wasted no time as they set about the small run chase with Tommy Baldock (49 not out) and Will Worthington (43) putting on 84 for the first wicket before the winning runs were knocked off in the 20th over. The win put the Warriors into fourth spot on percentage from Langhorne Creek although the Creeks do have a game in hand.Lobethal has continued their fine form with a professional five-wicket victory at Nairne. The win keeps the Tigers in third spot and just a game behind second placed Hahndorf. The home side won the toss and decided to bat first with James Graves (28), Luke Timmins (24) and Mitch Hein (24) all getting starts but unfortunately for the Razorbacks, no batsman could post a sizeable innings as Nairne were bowled out in the 45th over for just 137. Five Lobethal bowlers took wickets with Will Zadow (3/24), Mitch Weeks (2/18) and Dave Huxter (2/37) leading the way. The Tigers were relatively untroubled in their run chase as the winning runs were knocked off in the 37th over. Port Elliot skipper puts his side in a winning position with undefeated century

17 February 2020, 7:30 PM

Port Elliot has put themselves in a good position to move back inside the top four after a strong comeback against Encounter Bay as round 11 action got underway in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). In the match of the round, The Bloods won the toss and decided to bat first on their home ground and they got off to a good start with Hayden Gordge (29) and Ethan Spriggs (11) putting on 38 for the first wicket before a collapse of 7/52 left the home side in tatters at 7/90. The home side needed a partnership as skipper Jesse Consalvo was joined by Simon Donaldson and this pair began to resurrect the Port Elliot innings. Donaldson had played a match winning innings two rounds back against Mount Compass while Consalvo had already notched two half centuries this season so the Bloods were in good hands. This pair slowly wrested back the initiative from the visitors as they posted a 135-run partnership for the eighth wicket before Donaldson was dismissed for a crucial 36. Consalvo went on to post a fine century (108 not out) as the Bloods were eventually dismissed in the 70th over for 232. Encounter Bay skipper Cam Lintern was inspirational with the ball taking 5/25 from 13 overs. It was Lintern’s fifth five-wicket haul for Encounter Bay. He was well supported by Adam Moller, in his first ‘A’ grade game of the season, with 4/94 from 20 overs. It was tough going at Myponga as the home side batted out the day against Noarlunga to post 4/119 from their 70 overs. Myponga has improved since Christmas, posting a win against McLaren Districts, pushing Goolwa before losing by one wicket and now batting out the day against the reigning premier. Ryan Haverty (46 not out), Brad Hill (30) and Sean Haverty (27) were the mainstays of the Myponga innings. The Noarlunga bowlers gave very little away with skipper Jason Scarff leading the way with 3/30 from a marathon 21 overs. Scarff has now taken 27 wickets at an average of 10.70 this season. He was well supported by Peter Lamz who took 1/45 (18).McLaren Districts have taken the honours on day one of their clash at Goolwa Oval. The home side won the toss and got off to a good start with Luke Giddings (50) and Andrew Evans (38) putting the Magpies in a strong position. Unfortunately only two other players reached double figures as Goolwa struggled their way to 154 before being bowled out in the 69th over. David Smith continued his excellent season for McLaren Districts as he took 6/42 (23.3). Smith has now taken 27 wickets at an average of 11.26 to sit equal second on the GSCA wicket takers list.Willunga are in a commanding position to register their 10th consecutive victory after posting 6/281 from their 70 overs at Willunga Oval in their clash with Mount Compass. After losing opener Dane McPhail early, Luke Harding (30) and Scott Brown added 80 runs for the second wicket before Joel Docking (22) and Brown put on 46 for the third wicket. Brown went on to make 77 (132 balls), his highest score for Willunga. Tye McIvor (28) and Dylan Kay (25) continued to pile on the runs before Luke Goldner took over. Goldner smashed 60 not out from 52 balls (5 x 4’s, 1 x6) to lift the Demons to their highest score of the season. Ziggy Vitkunas (2/18) was the only multiple wicket taker for Mount Compass.

Wistow secures first win of 2019/20 AEHCA season
Wistow secures first win of 2019/20 AEHCA season

11 February 2020, 9:45 PM

There was cause for celebration on the Hill at Wistow as the Echidnas finally banked their first win for 2019/20 during round 14 action in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA). What made it even sweeter was the win came at the expense of fierce rival Mount Barker. The Kookaburras won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a competitive total of 8/168 from their 45 overs. Simon Turk (39), former Palmer and Lobethal premiership player Craig Paech (37), Deklan Porter (26) and Wayne Buckland (22) all got starts for the visitors. Wistow skipper Daniel Jenner was the standout with the ball taking 3/21 (9). It was the ‘Daniel Jenner Show’ as Wistow set about chasing down their target with the Jenner notching his fifth ‘A’ grade century with an outstanding knock of 115 not out from 98 balls (16 x 4, 4 x 6). Jenner got good support from opening partner Daniel Hughes (19), with the pair adding 91 for the first wicket, and then from Lachlan Elsworthy (10 not out) in an unbroken 62-run third wicket stand. Caleb Walker (2/34) took both the wickets for Mount Barker.Lobethal have continued their excellent run of form as they crushed Woodside by 189 runs at Woodside Oval. The Tigers have not tasted defeat since way back on 9 November. Lobethal batted first and posted an imposing total of 6/300 with Lachy Bates (85 not out), Matt Martin (82) and Daniel Norsworthy (81) dominating the innings. It was a tough day for the Woodside bowlers with Dale Robinson (2/55) and Chris Baschiera (2/57) the multiple wicket takers. Woodside were always going to be up against it as they slumped to 6/49 in the run chase. Baschiera (49 from 49 balls) added a bit of respectability to the score before the Warriors were bowled out for 111 in the 27th over. Four Lobethal bowlers took wickets with James Elliott (3/16), Dave Huxter (3/26) and Mitch Weeks (2/27) the main destroyers.Strathalbyn kept their grip on top spot with a hard fought 58-run home win over Nairne. The home side batted first and were in early trouble at 2/21 before Matt Abbott (23) joined his skipper Mark Abbott in a much needed 42-run partnership for the third wicket before Daniel Pegler (16) and Mark Abbott added 59 runs for the fourth wicket. Mark Abbott continued on to finish with 63 from 102 balls. The Stallions skipper now has 507 runs (50.70) for the season. Veteran Steven Schofield (32 from 35 balls) gave some impetus to the end of the innings as his side finished on 7/179 from their 45 overs. Nairne’s Mitch Hein continued his good recent form to snare 2/26 (9). The Razorbacks run chase started well with Sam Rowe (31) and Rob Crook (18) adding 48 runs for the first wicket but from the moment this partnership was broken, it was all Strathalbyn as the Stallions took the last 10 Nairne wickets for just 73 runs as the Razorbacks were bowled out for 121 in the 38th over. Five Strathalbyn bowlers took wickets with Matt Hein (3/17), Brayden Gaiter (3/26) and Matt Abbott (2/8) leading the way.Hahndorf consolidated second spot on the AEHCA ladder after a comprehensive 91-run win over Bremer-Callington at Hahndorf Oval. The Magpies batted first and were in early trouble at 3/25 before Lachlan Huxtable (13) joined Graydon Brand to add 58 runs for the fourth wicket, before another good partnership worth 53 between Ryan Trafford-Walker (23) and Brand lifted the home side to a strong position at 4/136. Brand continued on to post his highest score for Hahndorf with a fine innings of 81 before the Cobras struck back hard through a fine spell of bowling from Nathan Fitzgerald who snared 5/24 (9) to bowl the Magpies out for 174 in the 43rd over. It was Fitzgerald's first five-wicket haul in 'A' grade ranks. Unfortunately the Cobras comeback didn’t flow over into their run chase as they slumped to 4/19 before eventually being bowled out for just 83 in the 27th over. Arsalan Eubaid (22) was the only batsman to pass 20. Caleb Blesing (4/21) and Trafford-Walker (3/12) did most of the damage for the Magpies as they banked their ninth win of the campaign.Round 15 (15/2/20) fixtures (home side named first)…..Mount Barker v WoodsideWistow v StrathalbynBremer-Callington v Langhorne CreekNairne v LobethalHahndorf has the bye
