13 February 2023, 8:45 PM

Port Elliot has gone to the top of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) ladder following their 38-run win at Encounter Bay during round 11 action on Saturday. The game was played as a one-day match due to day one being washed out. Port Elliot batted first with Hayden Gordge (26) and Liam Harris (18) adding 31 for the first wicket. After that partnership, regular wickets fell as the Bloods were reduced to 5/59, before David Ling joined skipper Joel Harris at the crease. This pair added a crucial 39-run stand before Ling went for 28 (31 balls). Harris continued on to top score with a patient 41 (82 balls), as his side posted 134 from their 40 overs. This pair added 42 runs for the fifth wicket before Goodieson was dismissed for 60 (126 balls). Natale then put on 27 runs for the sixth wicket with Mark Elphick (16), but when Elphick departed, McLaren Districts were in strife at 6/147, still 63 runs short of victory. Roberts, who is having another outstanding season, made 86 with his innings including eight boundaries and three sixes. Roberts now has 395 runs and 31 wickets for the season. Goolwa skipper Jayden Crees was the main wicket taker for his side with 4/84.Myponga-Sellicks booked their spot in the finals with a comprehensive innings and 25 run victory over bottom side Aldinga. Strathalbyn Softball (Under 14's) review

Hills Softball Association - Strathalbyn v Redsox (Under 14's)Redsox’s Henry Sexton, as starting pitcher, rattled Strathalbyn’s batters with his pitching speed. Few batters were confident enough to have a swing, and while Henry warmed up, the first three batters managed to gain walks to load the bases before the next three batters were struck out. In defence, Charlie Askew pitched to Lindsay Butler and wasn’t far off the mark. Redsox’s batters made it around the diamond, despite Strath’s attempts to chase them. Askew and Butler achieved two strike-outs and a fantastic tag out at home plate after a wild pitch to end the dig with a score line of 5-0. At Strath’s second turn at bat, it looked as though it would be a case of three up three down, but after the second out, Archer Brown took a walk to first and set the tone for the next three batters. Butler held her nerve on a full count to take the fourth walk and score Brown. Strath changed up the field in defence with Tallera Spinks pitching to Bailey Bradshaw. Windy conditions proved a challenge but Spinks persevered to enable a couple of hits by Redsox that, despite good attempts, didn’t result in outs for Strath enabling seven more runs to be scored. Strath got one last shot at batting, with Meg Keenan stepping up and getting a lucky break with a dropped third strike seeing her just make it safe to first. Spinks got on base and showed her consistent diligence as a focussed base-runner. An attempted steal at home resulted in a trap play and Spinks as the first out of the inning. Zoe Williams, Jack Walters and Brown all got walks for Strath resulting in runs scored by Keenan, Williams and Walters for a final tally of 4four runs to the Panthers. This wasn’t enough to send Redsox back to bat as they’d already accrued a convincing eight-run lead. The final score was Hahndorf 12 defeated Strathalbyn 4.

Tait was the standout bowler for Bridgewater with 4/20 from his nine overs.Mount Lofty moved a game clear on top of the ladder with a hard-fought 22-run win against Scott Creek ironbank (SCIB) at Heathfield. It was tough going early for the home side with both openers back in the sheds with the score at 2/6. Strathalbyn v Hahndorf (Hills Softball Association ‘A’ Grade)In their first game back after the break, the ‘A’ grade Women found themselves playing on a Saturday and were up to bat first. Hahndorf’s fielders were on top of things right from the start with pitcher Tahlia Larosa starting the game with a K2, short stop Megan Williams taking a catch and second baser Breanna Luxon fielding and throwing to first baser Nic Zobel for the third out to hold Strathalbyn scoreless. Hahndorf came in to bat and had hits to Zobel, Larosa and a two-baser to Peyton Daniels which helped bring in three runs with Strath’s left fielder Ashlee Peterson, centre fielder Rebekah Mayes and right fielder Emily Eglitis all taking catches to end the innings.Strath came in for their second turn at bat and had safe hits to Tessa Norris and Ashlee Peterson but they could not get around and get home with Hahndorf’s Larosa pitching well for two K2’s and centre fielder Michelle Davis taking a catch to hold them scoreless again. Hahndorf had safe hits to Rylee Zobel, Chloe Davis, Daniels, M.Davis and Luxon with Williams getting a home run which all brought in a further seven runs. Strath continued to work hard in the field with a catch taken at shortstop by Jarrah Taylor and Norris fielding off of her pitching to make two outs at first.Strath needed runs and even though Jordarna Wilks was patient and gained herself a walk she was left stranded on third base unable to convert with Hahndorf’s third baser Daniels making an out at first and Larosa taking a catch and then making the third out at first base. Strath were tight in the field during Hahndorf’s third turn at bat with a catch taken by Norris, another catch to Taylor and a K2 to end the innings holding them scoreless. The fourth dig for Strath produced a safe hit to Norris and a walk to Peterson before Larosa closed the innings out with three K2’s to once again hold them scoreless. Handorf were up to bat again and had safe hits to Kiera Trevorrow, C.Davis, Williams and a home run for Daniels which helped bring in four runs with Strath’s first baser Kelly Roe taking a catch and Taylor making another out at first before time and game were called with Hahndorf 14 defeating Strathalbyn 0.Strathalbyn v Redsox (Hills Softball Association ‘C’ Grade)In their first game back after the Christmas break, Strathalbyn fielded first and held Redsox scoreless with pitcher Rebecca Sims fielding and throwing to Kelly Roe at first base for two outs and left fielder Annabel McGregor getting the ball in quickly to Jackie Marsh for the third out. Strath came in to bat and gained walks to Jess Rumble, Heidi Samuel and Marsh with safe hits to McGregor and Hannah Jones but they could only bring one runner home with Redsox making an out at third, an infield fly called and third baser Kerri Hardy making the out at first to end the innings. The second batting dig for Redsox produced hits to Emma Thomson, Suvali Sharma, Elisa Heath, Sienna Golder and a three baser to Ash Hermsen to help bring in seven runs before Strath’s shortstop Rumble made the out at first, made a tag at second and Marsh fielded and threw to Roe at first for the third out to send them from the diamond. Strath were held scoreless in their second turn at bat with Redsox pitcher Hermsen fielding and throwing to first for two outs and second baser Mandy Bottroff also throwing to first to end the innings. The third batting innings for Redsox had safe hits to Hardy, Bottroff, Heath, Sienna Golder, Glenys Megson and Alexis Golder with a two baser to Sharma and another three baser to Hermsen which all helped to bring in a further five runs with Strath working hard in the field with a K2, and short stop Dani O’Brien and Nicole Filsell combining for the last two outs at third base. Strath needed to gain some runs but again Redsox fielders were too strong with Hermsen doing a great job fielding and throwing to first for another two outs and second baser Bottroff taking a catch to end the innings and the game with Redsox 12 defeating Strathalbyn 1.

Nairne leapfrogged Lobethal into second spot on the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association (AEHCA) ladder after a low-scoring two-wicket win over the Tigers at Nairne Oval during round 14 action in the AEHCA on Saturday. Lobethal batted first and were in early trouble at 3/7, before Sam Graeber (38) and Tanner King (52) added 80 runs for the fourth wicket before Graeber was dismissed. From the relatively strong position at 3/87, the Tigers collapsed, losing their last 7/27 to be bowled out for 114. Left-arm spinner Matt Hein was the chief destroyer for Nairne with figures of 5/33 from his nine overs. He was well supported by brother Mitch (2/16) and Brodie Clarke (2/20). Nairne appeared to be cruising to victory with Shane Kenney (48) and Mitch Hein (13) taking the score to 2/70, before a collapse of 6/37 left the Razorbacks in a precarious position at 8/107. Thankfully for the home side, Zac Llewellyn (8 not out) and Matt Hein (5 not out) held their nerve to bring up the winning runs with 19 balls to spare. Mitch Weeks (2/12), Cameron Winen (2/23) and Dave Huxter (2/36) were the main wicket takers for Lobethal.Macclesfield kept their finals hopes alive with a comfortable 75-run win against Bremer/Callington at ‘Maccy’. Macclesfield batted first and posted a competitive 6/172 from their 45 overs. All-rounder Lachlan Barrett top scored with 54 not out, and he was ably supported by Kieran O’Connell (38) and Josh Lewis-Burns (33). Bremer/Callington were never in the run chase as they were bowled out for just 97 in the 25th over. Jai McMurtrie, with 48, was the only shining light with the bat for the Cobras. Six Redbacks bowlers took wickets with Joseph Lions (3/15), O’Connell (2/1) and Barrett (2/20) leading the way.Strathalbyn consolidated their spot in the top-four with a low-scoring 45-run win at Woodside. The Stallions batted first with vice-captain Matthew Harris making a crucial 51 from 94 balls (5 x 4’s). Mark Abbott (19) and Steve Schofield (18) made handy contributions as Strathalbyn struggled to 137 before being bowled out in the 44th over. Jeremy Druwitt (2/21), Shane Druwitt (2/29) and Nick Johns (2/38) were the leading wicket takers for the Warriors. Woodside were in all sorts of trouble in their run chase as they slumped to 5/47 before Will Dunstall (24) and Chris Baschiera (18) added 37 runs for the sixth wicket to get their team back in the game. The dismissal of Baschiera however, precipitated a collapse of 5/8 as the home side were bowled out for just 92 in the 33rd over. Lachlan Cutting (3/6) and Blake Beelitz (2/1) did the damage at the end of the innings for ‘Strath’, while skipper Brayden Gaiter dominated at the start with 3/15 from seven overs. The game between Hahndorf and Langhorne Creek was unable to be played at Mount Barker Summit due to the wet weather in the lead up to the weekend. Ladder - after round 14Langhorne Creek 50, Nairne 40, Lobethal 38, Strathalbyn 32, Macclesfield 26, Bremer/Callington 18, Woodside 16, Hahndorf 4. Round 15 fixtures (11/2/23) - home team named firstHahndorf v Bremer/CallingtonWoodside v Nairne Strathalbyn v Macclesfield Lobethal v Langhorne Creek

Hills Softball Association - Strathalbyn v Hahndorf (Under 14's)Hahndorf started strongly at bat, with discipline and successfully swinging at strikes to get a mixture of hits and walks. The inning started well for Strathalbyn’s defence with two early outs (a K2 and a put out to first). Charlie Askew pitched strongly to Lindsay Butler, and showed good ball control with the balls very close to the strike zone. But the morning showers proved a challenge and the rest of the batters walked. Hahndorf’s batting dig ended when their seventh run crossed home plate. At bat, Strath was hesitant to swing, which meant the first two batters walked to first, but the next three were out, with two strikeouts and a put out to first. As is often the case, Strath rallied in defence behind new pitcher Eva Eglitis pitching to Bailey Bradshaw. A flyball landing behind the pitcher was picked up by Meg Keenan to make a terrific tag out by Tellera Spinks at third base. Hahndorf made one safe hit and two more runs before Askew, now at first, lunged out from first base for a great catch before playing the base for a terrific double play. Strath were once again reluctant to swing the bat, which had the exact same result as the previous dig, a handful of walks, a put out and two strikeouts. In the final batting dig, Hahndorf continued their winning formula at bat (discipline at not swinging at balls, and connecting well when a strike was available) saw them bring in another seven runs. Highlights for Strath included great fielding in right field by Zoe Williams, almost making a put out to first. There were also some close attempts to defend stolen bases by Strath. The final score was Hahndorf 16 defeating Strathalbyn 5.

Extras (34) also aided Goolwa in posting a competitive total. Sean Goodes (2/26), Luke Harding (2/39) and Joe Last (2/40) were the leading wicket takers for the Demons. Special mention should be made of Sean McIvor who bowled a marathon 21 overs (11 maidens) to finish with 0/26.The matches at Encounter Bay (Encounter Bay v Port Elliot) and Mount Compass (Mount Compass v Yankalilla) were unable to commence due to inclement weather on Thursday and Friday.
