Strathalbyn v Hills Heat Masters - ‘A’ Grade WomenIn the late game Strathalbyn came out swinging and produced safe hits to Kim Cutting, Kathy Pash with Peyton Daniels hitting a triple to bring them both home followed by a safe hit to Gab Martin bringing home Daniels before a great catch by Masters left fielder Kylie Barrington, a pick off at second and an out at first ended the innings. Strath started well in the field too with Ashlee Peterson taking a catch at second, a K2 to pitcher/catcher combo of Daniels to Bianca Pash and an out at first by third baser Martin holding them scoreless with the only safe hit to Kel O’Brien. It was three up three down in the second batting dig for Strath with Masters third baser Lauren Christensen and second baser Kerry Wilkinson both making outs at first and the third out being a strange hit the ball a second time on the swing through and out of the box. Masters picked some walks in the second and had runners on base but again Strath had their minds on making good choices with another K2, a pitchers fielders choice pick off at third and a put out at first by Tash Mayes to leave them stranded.Strath started their third turn at bat with a home run to Kathy Pash and Daniels with a double followed by multiple single safe hits which had brought in four runs and loaded the bases when Cutting had a great hit past the Masters right fielder to bring everyone home for a grand slam. Daniels followed up again with another double, Kathryn Milne had another safe hit and B. Pash hitting to right field as well which brought in a further three runs with Masters working hard in the field for a tag out at second, a catch taken by Christensen and a K2 to new pitcher Meg Chaplin. Masters put bat onto ball in the third with safe hits to Barrington, O’Brien, Chaplin and a three baser to Christensen which brought in three runs with Strath’s right fielder Emily Eglitis combining with Cutting for an out at second, Daniels making an out at first and B. Pash throwing across the diamond for a pick off at second.Strath had safe hits to Tess Norris, Eglitis, Cutting and K. Pash but with Masters right fielder Kate Adamson taking a catch, short stop Michelle Davis also taking a catch and catcher Sharon Perkins, Christensen and Davis all being involved in a trap play they held Strath to two runs. Kirsty Hailstone gained herself a walk in the fourth and worked her way around the diamond and was brought home by a hit to the outfield by Davis but Strath were too strong in the field with Cutting combining with Mayes for two outs at first and receiving the ball from Eglitis for an out at second to end the game. Strathalbyn coming out on top 16 runs to Masters 4 and with some confidence going into the first final next week.Strathalbyn v Pirates - ‘C’ Grade Women Pirates started their game off with safe hits to Michelle Stewart, Debbie Taylor and Danielle Hupfield with a two baser to Vanessa Silvy which brought in three runs with Strath’s third baser Monica Spriggs making an out at first, second baser Lavinia Seymour taking a catch and then also making an out first to end the innings. Strath’s first two batters were HPB and with a couple of walks gained and safe hits to Monica Spriggs and Annabel McGregor they were able to bring home four runs with an infield fly, an out at second and short stop Brenae Wieringa making an out at first.Safe hits to Wieringa and Sue Stewart helped Pirates bring home two runs in the second with Strath’s short stop Rebecca Sims combining with Spriggs making two fielders choice outs at third and Seymour making another out at first. Sims, Vanessa Kitto and Amy Bailey all had safe hits for Strath with Seymour hitting a two baser and combined with great base running and a steal home by Bailey they brought in five runs while Pirates made a K2 and a double play by centre fielder Leonie Beattie taking a catch and getting the ball in quickly to second to catch the runner out of their ground. Two walks were gained by Pirates in the third with Beattie having the only safe hit but with some great base running Hupfield got home but runners were left stranded on base with Strath making another two outs at first and a K2 to pitcher/catcher combo of Bailey to Amber Crawford. Strath had safe hits to Bailey, McGregor and Crawford in the third dig and even with some great base stealing Pirates held them to just two runs with a catch taken by Wieringa now at third and Stephanie Zuzolo now at short stop taking two catches to end the innings and the game with Strathalbyn looking to take the momentum into the finals series winning 11 runs to the Pirates 6 runs.

Veteran Chad Dawe came on late in the innings and snared his first ever hat-trick, finishing with 4/33 (4). Callan Blackwell (2/30) was the other wicket taker for the Bulldogs. Meadows were never really in the run chase with Haydn Reid the only batsman to reach 20 as he made 52 from 83 balls (8 x 4’s) with the home side being bowled out for 157 in the 43rd over. Six Mylor bowlers took wickets with Michael Warburton (3/13) and Thomas Jensen (3/39) the leading wicket takers. Mylor will now face off with Stirling in the Elimination Final at Stirling this Saturday. Mt Lofty claimed the minor premiership with a comfortable eight-wicket win against Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) at Heathfield Oval yesterday. The two teams will meet in the Qualifying Final at the same venue this Saturday. On Saturday, SCIB batted first with Aaron Thompson continuing his excellent season as he top scored with 51 (77 balls). He was ably supported by Adam Shearwood (36) and Daniel Desengo (24) as SCIB posted a competitive 9/176 from their 45 overs. Josh Healey (2/19) and Peter Giannes (2/41) were the multiple wicket takers for the Redcaps and there were four run-outs. Mt Lofty made light work of the run chase with Healey top scoring with 87 not out from 114 balls (10 x 4’s, 1 x 6), while Josh Mitchell made a hard-hitting 58 from just 28 balls. Mitchell’s innings included four boundaries and six ‘maximums’ as the winning runs came up in the 36th over. Reigning premier Stirling confirmed their spot in the finals after a high-scoring 39-run win at Bridgewater. The Eagles batted first and got off to a great start through an opening stand worth 126 runs between Jack Read and Connor McFadyen. Both players were very aggressive with McFadyen top scoring with 90 (71 balls), while Read made 60 (49 balls). Daniel Gonzalez (56) and Harrison Webb (38) continued the carnage as the Eagles finished all out for 300 in the 45th over. Bridgewater’s innings was underpinned by a fine century from Ty Watson who top scored with 101 not out from 124 balls (9 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). He added 101 runs for the sixth wicket with Caleb Risson (57 from 51) but ultimately ‘Bridgey’ came up short at 7/261. Ezekiel Hemming (2/16), Jack Pick (2/34) and McFadyen (2/55) were the leading wicket takers for the Eagles. An undefeated century to Kangarilla skipper Lachlan Knight has led his team to a thrilling one-wicket victory against Aldgate. It was ‘Kangies’ first win in three months and knocked Aldgate out of finals calculations in the process. The Gaters batted first with Shaun Atkins (34), Josh Callaghan (34) and Luke Smet (27 not out) helping Aldgate to 7/173 from their 45 overs. Ben Evans was the best of the Kangarilla bowlers with 3/27 from his nine-over spell. Aldgate looked to have the game well in their keeping as Kangarilla slipped to 5/41. Knight was carrying the team on his back, but at 9/120 it appeared the game was over. Number 11 batsman Troy Martinsen joined Knight in the 34th over with 54 runs remaining for victory and this pair defied all the odds to see their team over the line in the 44th over. Knight finished with 115 not out from 146 balls with his innings containing 10 boundaries and seven sixes, while Martinsen ended up with an invaluable 1 not out (21 balls). Jack Woollard (2/22) was the pick of the Aldgate bowlers. McFadyen (30) and Read (25) continued their good day with a 54-run opening stand with the reigning premiers knocking off the total for the loss of four wickets in just the 21st over. Stirling can confirm their finals berth with a win against Bridgewater this Saturday in the final round. Mt Lofty are one win away from securing the all-important double chance after an excellent six-wicket win against Mylor at Heathfield. The Pipers batted first and were in strife at 3/52 before Adrian Gaunt and Ben James came together to put on 93 for the fourth wicket. Gaunt top scored with 77 (92 balls), while James finished on 72 not out (86 balls) as Mylor posted 6/213 from their 45 overs. Adam Carthew was the pick of the Redcaps bowlers with 2/26 (9), while Connor Milde took 2/50 (9). Mt Lofty put in a real team effort in the run chase with Nick Justice (52), Josh Mitchell (46), Jordan Neis-Beer (39), Carthew (38 not out) and Peter Giannes (29 not out) all playing significant roles in getting their side over the line with three overs to spare. All to play for with one day left in the Great Southern Cricket minor round

19 February 2024, 9:30 AM

The bowlers had a day out at Willunga on Saturday as Willunga and Encounter Bay traded blows on day one of their clash during round 12 action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA). 16 wickets fell for just 153 runs as the Bays reached stumps at 6/67 in pursuit of Willunga’s first innings total of 86. Earlier, Encounter Bay sent Willunga into bat and the Demons were soon in strife at 5/22. Chad Franceschini played a lone hand for Willunga, being the only batsman to reach double figures, top scoring with 56 from 78 balls (5 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Encounter Bay skipper Blake Bailey led from the front with 5/41 (11), his second five-wicket haul of the season. Kieran Garrett (3/18) and Luke Crichton (2/15) were the other wicket takers for the Bays. The Encounter Bay run chase started poorly as they slumped to 3/10 before Cam Lintern (21) and Max Longhurst (14) steadied the ship to leave the Bays needing 20 runs to win and claim the minor premiership. Daniel Hockham (2/5), Simon Roberts (2/21) and Sean McIvor (2/28) were the wicket takers for Willunga. Port Elliot have put themselves in a good position to claim a top-two spot after posting 8/231 on day one of their clash with McLaren Districts at McLaren Vale. It was an excellent team batting display by the Bloods with Scott Hannam (28), Ethan Spriggs (34) and Ben Griffiths (40) making good contributions. But it was skipper Joel Harris who was the standout with 79 from 129 balls (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6), his third half century of the season. Harris is having a career-best season with 485 runs at an average of 69.29. The Crushers used nine bowlers with skipper Luke Goodieson (3/23) and Keith Schofield (2/43) the multiple wicket takers. Mt Compass will be pushing hard for an outright victory on day two of their clash with Victor Harbor at Burgess Oval after ending the first day on 3/108 in pursuit of the Vipers’ first innings total of 117. An outright win for the Bulls would be enough to catapult them into the finals. Earlier, Victor Harbor batted first with veteran Tim Watson top scoring with 42 from 71 balls (7 x 4’s). No other Vipers batsman reached 20 as they were bowled out for 117 in the 48th over. Ethan Osmond (3/16), Bailey Baldock (3/17), Ethan Anderson (2/6) and Aaron Dalitz (2/9) were the wicket takers for ‘Compass’. The home side wasted no time setting after the small total as Jamarley Daley (49) and Matthew East (43 not out) helped their side to within 10 runs of first innings points at stumps. Myponga-Sellicks and Yankalilla are locked in a tight tussle after day one of their clash at Myponga was dominated by the bowlers. The Mudlarks batted first but could only manage a total of 99 before being bowled out in the 56th over. Michael Tomlinson top scored with 22 to continue his consistent season. Aaron Smith was the best of the Yankalilla bowlers with the excellent figures of 4/27 from a marathon 23 overs. Leg-spinner Luke Bartlett was the other multiple wicket taker with 2/9 from nine overs. The Tigers had 14 overs to negotiate before stumps and they finished on 2/13. It could be a nervous run chase on Saturday with a win for the Tigers securing their finals berth. However, a loss would leave them at the mercy of other results. Needing a win to keep their finals hopes alive, Goolwa batted first against Noarlunga and posted 137 at Old Noarlunga before being bowled out in the 69th over. It was tough going in the first session with the Magpies 2/36 at the tea break thanks to some tight bowling from the Shoes. Luke Giddings (38) and Jayden Crees (22) put on a handy 33-run seventh wicket stand, while four other batsmen reached double figures without going onto a big score. Travis Bronstein bowled an excellent spell for the Shoes, claiming 5/44 from 20.4 overs, while Cam Bullard took 2/20 (7).

Bradey Judd was the standout bowler for the Magpies with 4/20 from nine overs. He was well supported by Dean Gore (2/18) and Ryan Trafford-Walker (2/37). The Razorbacks batted first with Shane Kenney getting them off to a flier with a quickfire 32 from 19 balls (2 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). Once Kenney was dismissed, Nairne stumbled to 7/95 before Chad Harrop made his first half century of the season with an important knock of 77 from 73 balls (5 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s). Off-spinner Matt Harris snared 3/25 (8.5) for the Stallions, while Tyson Roberts took 2/17. Strathalbyn’s run chase was set up by a fine 78-run stand between veterans Luke Cousins and Mark Abbott. Cousins top scored with 75 (90 balls), while Abbott finished on 68 not out (79 balls) as the Stallions brought up an impressive victory with 35 balls to spare. Duncan Rogers was the best of the Razorbacks bowlers with 2/25 (8).Macclesfield won their sixth game of the season with a low-scoring 48-run win against Bremer Callington at ‘Maccy’ on Saturday. The Redbacks batted first with skipper Tom Filsell making a handy 22 (3 x 4’s) at the top of the order. Lachie Barrett was the standout batsman for Macclesfield with 63 (5 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s), his fifth half-century of the campaign. No other Redbacks player reached double figures as the home side were bowled out for 131 in the 41st over. Johnny Fitzgerald (3/22), Shannon Howie (2/18) and Nathan Fitzgerald (2/31) were the leading wicket takers for the Cobras. Bremer Callington were under early pressure in the run chase as they stumbled to 5/39, before eventually getting bowled out for 83. Graydon Brand was the best of the Cobras batsmen once again with 37 not out (4 x 4’s, 1 x 6). Brand has played almost a lone hand with the bat this season with 380 runs with two games remaining. Barrett confirmed his ‘man of the match’ status snaring 3/8 and he was well supported by Joe Lions (3/9) and Kieran O’Connell (2/27)Ladder (after round 16)Langhorne Creek 52, Lobethal 50, Strathalbyn 42, Nairne 42, Macclesfield 26, Woodside 20, Hahndorf 18, Bremer Callington 6.Round 17 fixtures (home team named first)  Bremer Callington v HahndorfNairne v Langhorne Creek Lobethal v StrathalbynMacclesfield v Woodside

Strathalbyn v Hahndorf - ‘A’ Grade WomenThe first time this season that an A women game was played on a Saturday the weather turned out to be quite warm. Strathalbyn came up to bat first and had hits to Buttsy Milne and Gab Martin with the only safe hit to Tash Mayes but with Hahndorf’s third baser Chloe Davis taking a catch, short stop Abby Bastian picking off the runner at second and a K2 to pitcher/catcher combo of Rylee Zobel to Georgia King, Martin and Mayes were left stranded on base unable to score. Hahndorf’s turn at bat was also scoreless with Strath’s pitcher Tess Norris fielding and throwing to the safe glove of Milne at first, combining with catcher Martin for a K2 and a line drive catch to third baser Mayes sending them from the diamond. The second dig for Strath was also scoreless even with Norris getting on to base due to Hahndorf making another two K2’s and picking the runner off at second base. Hahndorf had hits to Mia Oats-Willis, Charlotte Fairley and Bastian in the second bringing home three runs with Strath’s left fielder Rebecca Sims taking a catch, Mayes now at short stop picking off the runner at second and Norris again making an out at first to end the innings.Strath were looking to get a score on the board but even with a walk to Ashlee Peterson and hits to Kim Cutting, Milne and Mayes they were unable to bring anyone home with Hahndorf making an out at first, a K2 and a great running catch in foul territory by Davis. Strath were again able to hold Hahndorf scoreless in the third with another line drive catch by Mayes and new catcher Cutting taking two high ball catches to send them back to the dugout. The intention for Strath to make runs in the fourth was there with some great swinging but apart from Emily Eglitis they were unable to connect and get on with Hahndorf making another two K2’s and an out at first to again hold them scoreless. Hahndorf came out swinging in their turn at bat and with multiple safe hits, great base running and Oats-Willis gaining a home run it brought in seven runs which was enough to call the game with the only out being made by Milne fielding and playing her base. Hahndorf came out on top on a hot day 10 runs to Strathalbyn 0.Strathalbyn v Macclesfield - ‘C’ Grade Women On a warm day Macclesfield were up to bat first and produced hits to Claudia Lions and Karlyn McLeod which helped push Amabel Lions around the bases for the only run of the innings with Strathalbyn’s third baser Rebecca Sims making an out at first, working well with short stop Annabel McGregor for an out at third and McGregor fielding and throwing to the safe glove of Lavinia Seymour at first. Strath came in to bat and through some good choices they gained some walks, had a safe bunt to Sims and a single to Laura Sneath and with some great base stealing they were able to bring in seven runs with Maccy’s short stop C. Lions making an out at first and left fielder A. Lions taking a catch and quickly throwing to third to catch the runner out of their ground for a double play. The second innings for Maccy was three up three down with Seymour involved in all three outs first taking a catch, then fielding and playing her own base and then receiving the ball from pitcher Amy Bailey to send them from the diamond scoreless. Strath had safe hits to Sims, Amber Crawford and Sneath but they could only add one run with Maccy making another two outs at first and C. Lions fielding and making the tag on the runner to end the innings. The third batting dig for Maccy was facing first time pitcher Sneath and C. Lions had a safe hit and with some choosy batting again they got runners on and with some great base running they were able to bring home three runs with Strath’s Sims now at short stop making an out at first, taking a catch and then fielding and getting the runner out on second base. Strath’s third turn at bat produced a safe hit to Vanessa Kitto but they were only able to add one run to the tally with Maccy picking off a runner at second, making another out at first and catcher Zarlee Winitana fielding and getting the ball to first base for the third and final out of the innings and the game. Strathalbyn were the winners with 9 runs to Macclesfield 4.
