Reigning premier Willunga flexed their muscles with a convincing 70-point win against Myponga/Sellicks in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) Qualifying Final on Saturday at Mount Compass. Willunga started well as they kicked five straight goals in the first quarter to lead by 26 points at the first change. They extended their lead out to a handy 36 points at halftime, and the game appeared over. To their credit, Myponga/Sellicks played an excellent third quarter, kicking 3.6 to 1.1, to reduce the margin to 19 points at the final change. The Mudlarks’ comeback was short lived though, as the Demons stormed home with eight last quarter goals to win 18.8 (116) to 5.16 (46). Willunga had 10 different goalkickers with Liam Nye kicking four goals in a best-on-ground performance. He was well supported by Sam Renney who kicked three goals to be named second best for the Demons. Sam Kennedy and Matthew Flintham kicked two goals each for the Mudlarks. Other good players for the Demons were Danny Juckers, Billy Cook, Cam Hutchens and Cameron McDonald. For Myponga/Sellicks, their best included Luke Whitford, Ben Kennedy and Ryan Kelly.Langhorne Creek continued their great second half of the season as they defeated Encounter Bay by 29 points to advance to the cut-throat first semi-final on Sunday against Myponga/Sellicks. In more good news for the Hawks, the game will be played on their home ground. The Hawks won every quarter in their 12.12 (84) to 8.7 (55) triumph. Caleb Howell (3), Coby Helyar (2) and Malakai Kartinyeri (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Langhorne Creek. Best players for the ‘Creeks’ were Ben Arbon, David Warren, Jack Keynes, Darcy Clifford, Joshua Towk and Matt Tonkin. Noarlunga put a dent in Flagstaff Hill’s chances at a seventh straight ‘A’ grade flag after defeating the Falcons by 12 points in the Qualifying Final at Bice Oval in the Southern Football League (SFL) on Saturday. The first quarter was tight with ‘Flaggies’ leading by a point at quarter time. Noarlunga opened the game up with the breeze in the second term to lead by 27 points late in the quarter, before the Falcons goaled on the halftime siren to reduce the margin to 21 points at the long break. Flagstaff Hill had the wind in the third term and they went on a rampage in the first 20 minutes to kick six unanswered goals to lead by 15 points. The Shoes looked rattled but they kicked two crucial goals into the wind late in the term to go to the last change just two points behind. The last quarter was dominated by Noarlunga as they kicked an inaccurate 2.8 to 1.0 to win 10.16 (76) to 10.4 (64). Tom Anderson kicked four goals for the Shoes in a best-on-ground performance, while teammate Vic Robertson also kicked four goals. Sam Smith (4), Blake Aldridge (3) and Ryan Mountford (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Falcons. Joining Tom Anderson in the best players for Noarlunga were Jake Anderson, Robertson, Tom Mott, Callum Gaspari and Josh Beard. Best for the Falcons included Tynan Carney, Brad Patterson, Smith, Aldridge and Brayden Heyward-Ferors.Morphett Vale put an end to Happy Valley’s season with a comfortable 42-point victory in the elimination final at Aldinga yesterday. Last season Morphett Vale went all the way to the Grand Final from week one of the finals, so their confidence will be high ahead of a rematch with Flagstaff Hill on Sunday. Yesterday, the Emus started well to take a handy 28-point lead at quarter time. They extended their lead to 39 points at halftime, and 56 points at the last change, before winning 17.11 (113) to 10.11 (71). Christies Beach upset Port Noarlunga yesterday at Morphett Vale to progress to the preliminary final in the Southern Football League Women’s ‘A’ grade competition. The knockout semi-final was a tense and low-scoring affair with ‘Porties’ leading by just two points at the last change. In a torrid last quarter, ‘Christies’ kicked three behinds while Port Noarlunga failed to score to see Christies Beach win 1.5 (11) to 1.4 (10). Melanie Koster kicked the Saints’ only goal, while Teegan Mesecke kicked the Cockle Divers’ goal. Isabella Zito, Koster, Naomi Jones, Maddison Wilson-Niessen and Hannah Clarke were named best players for the Saints. Best for the Cockle Divers were Madison Harris, Bree Chapman, Nikki Parker, Jolie Malinowski and Mesecke. Minor premier Reynella are the first team through to the Grand Final after defeating reigning premier Flagstaff Hill by 18 points at Flagstaff Hill. The Wine Flies got off to an excellent start as they kicked four goals to lead by 27 points at quarter time. Flagstaff Hill outscored Reynella over the last three quarters, kicking four goals to two, but the damage had been done as the Wine Flies won 6.8 (44) to 4.2 (26). Georgia Scholes was the leading goalkicker on the field with three goals for Reynella. Caitlin Walter, Zannah Loxton, Anja Bancevic, Grace Doran and Madison Bennett were named best for the Wine Flies. Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill warmed up for their finals campaign with a 35-point win against Port Noarlunga during round 16 action in the Southern Football League Women’s ‘A’ grade competition on Saturday. The Falcons only led by six points at the last change and an upset was a distinct possibility. However, it wasn't to be as ‘Flaggies’ showed their class in the last quarter to kick four goals to none to win 6.11 (47) to 2.0 (12). Carli Morton kicked two goals for the Falcons, while Tyla Pyman and Sheridan Poland kicked ‘Porties’ two goals. Flagstaff Hill skipper Tamsyn Morriss was named best on ground and she was well supported by Shaylee Dayman, Chloe Meyers, Ebony Scanlan, Tiana Lush and Elizabeth Johnson. Best for the Cockle Divers were Ella Slape, Nikki Parker, Elisha Scriven, Danielle Hansen and Bree Chapman.Cove Cobras finished their season on a high note with a nail-biting three-point win against Aldinga. McLaren Eagles finished the minor round undefeated after defeating Encounter Bay by 135 points during round 18 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) yesterday. The Eagles won all 18 matches, by an average of 79 points, and are warm favourites to take out their first ‘A’ grade title since 2003. McLaren dominated all day to win 25.9 (159) to 3.6 (24). The Eagles had 13 different goalkickers including Brett Ellis (5), James Grimley (4) and Jordan Mutton (3). Blake Bailey, James Brown and Nick Marshall kicked the Bays’ three goals. Skipper Ellis was named best for the Eagles and he was well supported by Lachlan Matthews, Codey Ellison, Sam Lawrie and Jamie Smith. Best for the Bays were Andrew Fyfe, Cory Gamble, Patrick McInerney, Lachlan Williams and Tyson Neale. Langhorne Creek stormed into the finals after a huge 137-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot at Goolwa yesterday. Langhorne Creek stormed into the top-five after stunning reigning premier Willunga during round 17 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. The Hawks started the season with just one win in the first six rounds and it looked odds-on that they would miss finals action. Fast forward three months and the Hawks are one win away from playing in the major round. On Saturday, Langhorne Creek led throughout to win 15.14 (104) to 5.12 (42). Caleb Howell and Coby Helyar were the two best players on the ground, with each player kicking five goals. Other good players for the ‘Creeks’ were Josh Towk, Darcy Clifford, Troy Blackwell and Matt Dominish. Daniel Bass kicked two goals for Willunga, while their best players were Cam Hutchens, Brett Miegel, Harrison Mills, Billy Cook and Hugo Hoeck. Encounter Bay confirmed their spot in the GSFL finals following their comfortable 67-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot. The Bays led at every change before winning 16.16 (112) to 7.3 (45). Tyson Neale had a day out with seven goals, while Nick Marshall slotted five majors. Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill handed Reynella their first loss of the season with a thrilling one-point win during round 15 action in the Southern Football League Women’s ‘A’ grade competition yesterday. These two sides played off in the 2021 decider and will do battle again in a fortnight when the finals begin. Reynella started the better of the two sides as they took a 13-point lead at quarter time. Flagstaff Hill fought back in the second term kicking two goals to none to level things up at halftime. Reynella took the lead again in the third term and turned for home with a seven-point lead. The last quarter was a torrid affair with ‘Flaggies’ kicking the only goal of the term to win a thriller 3.5 (23) to 3.4 (22). Melissa Anderson kicked two goals for the Falcons, while Casie Coombe also kicked two goals for the Wine Flies. Best players for Flagstaff Hill were Tamsyn Morriss, Rachel Crockart, Czenya Cavouras, Jasmin Partridge and Jenna Andrews. Willunga have won their second FPAG ‘A’ Grade Women’s Great Southern Football League premiership in a row after defeating McLaren by 65 points in a dominant display at Strathalbyn today. The Demons went through the minor round undefeated and played an excellent finals series with two comfortable wins against the Eagles. Willunga did all the attacking in the first quarter but could only score seven behinds, before kicking two goals in the second quarter to lead by 20 points at halftime. The game completely opened up in the second half with Willunga kicking eight goals to zero to win 10.13 (73) to 1.2 (8). Shae Archbold (3), Courtney Gum (2) and Tessa Kohn (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Willunga, while Jessica Shaw kicked the only goal for McLaren. Caitlin Radbone was named best on ground for the premiers and she was ably supported by Kohn, Lauren Clifton, Katrice Turner, Grace Duffy and Ella Radbone. Best for the Eagles were Sam Pratt, Katie Whish, Tiffany Copley, Layla Rogers, Katrina Munzberg and Ruby Flanagan-Sjoberg. The Willunga under 17 girls also won their second premiership in a row after defeating McLaren by 53 points at Strathalbyn. The Demons completed a stunning undefeated season with a dominant display in the decider.
